Front-Ranger:
I had a female Japanese exchange student for one summer. I enjoyed getting to know her but she was quite a bit older than my kids so it was not a perfect fit. Also, communication was a big problem. She knew English but was so shy and submissive that I had to go to great lengths to get her to volunteer a word or thought.

That's a little bit of the problem we're having. Our two students are very sweet but they are very shy and drawing them out is difficult. Some of the other host families are reporting that their students are volunteering to cook Japanese meals, they do dishes--become very much a part of the household. Not ours...they retreat to their rooms and it is all I can do to drag them out!
