In this context I've always taken "boneless" to mean "cloudless," though I can't exactly say where I picked up that notion and it may predate my reading of Annie Proulx.

I know, for example, that a ship moving fast enough to create a white wave at the bow is said to have "a bone in her teeth," so I may be projecting from "bone" = "white wave" to "boneless blue (sky)" = cloudless, clear blue sky.

If I remember correctly, Annie's use occurs in her narration of the last horsepacking trip in May 1983.

Well, darn. I should have remembered that. Are you going to take away my BBM membership card?  ;)

Who knows, maybe they'll make their way to the western shop in Brussels.

Now that would be fun! And one of these days, I'll get there too!

Morning everyone!

it's supposed to get up to 40 today, that's an improvement after the beginning of the week!  By the weekend, almost 60, but rainy.

According to our local NBC affiliate it was 20 F when I left home this morning. The cold felt damp and penetrating right to the bones as I waited for the bus.  :(

But at least it's another boneless-blue late-winter morning!  :)

Of course not! Silly!  :-*

Just write, "I will remember Annie Proulx's prose" on the blackboard 300 times.  ;D
