I agree with you about the first third of the film.  Now that I have the DVD I find myself watching to the fireside scene after the Motel Siesta reunion, and then I stop.  Not always, but often enough because I want to keep the tender happy moments for myself and let the rest go, at least a lot of the time.  I was also disappointed that there were not more tender intimate moments as Jack and Ennis aged.  The 'Never enough time' feeling of the last tent scene before the lake confrontation speaks volumes to me.  Six months have passed since I saw this movie the first time and it is still a major influence in my life.  That's powerful, I think.

I agree!  That is powerful.  To me, it also feels a little like a forewarning about Jack's own life is coming close to an end.
