What a great question!! Here's how I would explain it...

Brokeback Mountain is a movie about two boys in Wyoming who apply for the same sheepherder's job. They both get hired and they take a big herd of sheep up on Brokeback Mountain for the summer. They have fun camping, riding horses, and taking care of the sheep and the sheepdogs and during the summer, they fall in love. But when they leave the mountain at the end of the summer, Ennis is engaged to Alma, so they get married even though Ennis loves Jack. Jack moves to Texas and marries Lureen and they have a child. After four years, Jack comes through that part of Wyoming on his way home to visit his parents and sees Ennis again, and they realize they are still in love. So, they get together several times a year to fish, hunt, and ride in the mountains. Twenty years goes by, and Ennis gets divorced, but Jack and Ennis still don't get back together. Then, Jack dies mysteriously, and Ennis realizes that he should have been more courageous and accepted his love and Jack.

I think 9 years of age would be a great time to tell a child this story!!

Lee.......as you say, a great story to tell a nine year old boy.

Maybe it should be written in a suitable for children way like that, and used as a story at schools.

Im sure a lot of little boys would grow up with a lot more understanding.

Good point.

Interestingly, back in May when I was away for the weekend with members of my forum/the charity we started, Brokeback was on TV on the Sunday evening after we'd got rid of all the members and the committee was just winding down and chilling out. Of course I was determined I was watching it, but as we were staying at a holiday park in a static caravan (trailer), with only one portable TV, that meant all of the committee staying in the "HQ van" watching it. In the end we ended up phoning out for pizza (I had a 'Mexicana' in honour of Jack ) with the whole committee and all of us watching BBM together, but Lisa, who went with me to the Film 4 open-air screening on BBM in London in August, had her 10 year old daughter there as well, and there was a bit of concern over quite how we'd deal with that.

Fortunately they'd got some Disney DVDs for her portable DVD player for the car, and one of the other committee members had got a laptop, so we sat her at the table in the lounge area, out of direct sight of the TV, and gave her some headphones so she could watch/listen to the Disney DVD while we watched BBM.

There were just a couple of points where she got bored of her DVD and got up to see what we were watching (unfortunately one of them was TS1!  :o) and then her DVD finished before the end of BBM (but by then then was nothing else in BBM not suitable really). Fortunately, when she decided to investigate part way through TS1 one of the committee had the quick-thinking to say "They're fighting" and she just accepted that and pronounced "Well it looks boring to me!" and went back to her DVD! We probably wouldn't have got away with it if she'd been a bit older, but as it was, we got away with it just.

I've told 'em next year we're watching 'Shelter' for our 'chill out' movie, but I doubt we'd get away with the same explanation for Katie again!
