"Desperado"
whiteoutofthemoon:
Strange, but I'm driving home late tonite, and one of my favorite Eagles songs comes on the radio...... call me crazy, but this song just reminded me of Ennis.
Especially the last line: "you better let somebody love you, before it's too late".
Struck me as what Ennis was left with at the end....couldn't love, couldn't be loved, by Jack, or Cassie. Condemned to that lonely trailer, on that lonely plain, all alone.
"Your prison is walking through this world all alone".
(Damn...when is this movie gonna stop haunting me?)

"Desperado"
Desperado, why don't you come to your senses?
You been out ridin' fences for so long now
Oh, you're a hard one
I know that you got your reasons
These things that are pleasin' you
Can hurt you somehow
Don't you draw the queen of diamonds, boy
She'll beat you if she's able
You know the queen of hearts is always your best bet
Now it seems to me, some fine things
Have been laid upon your table
But you only want the ones that you can't get
Desperado, oh, you ain't gettin' no younger
Your pain and your hunger, they're drivin' you home
And freedom, oh freedom well, that's just some people talkin'
Your prison is walking through this world all alone
Don't your feet get cold in the winter time?
The sky won't snow and the sun won't shine
It's hard to tell the night time from the day
You're losin' all your highs and lows
Ain't it funny how the feeling goes away?
Desperado, why don't you come to your senses?
Come down from your fences, open the gate
It may be rainin', but there's a rainbow above you
You better let somebody love you, before it's too late
Penthesilea:
Which Brokie would not think of Ennis by listening to those lyrics?
Many lines just fit. And the mood of the song fits, too.
Desperado, why don't you come to your senses?
I could yell this line at Ennis at the scene of their first parting after Brokeback summer, at the post divorce scene and at the lake scene (it's the last time, Ennis, your very last chance!)
You been out ridin' fences for so long now
20 years of shying away again and again is too long
Oh, you're a hard one
That's what he tries to be so desperately
I know that you got your reasons
Think of Ennis' father
These things that are pleasin' you
The love between them
Can hurt you somehow
Can - but by shying away they do more than ever
Now it seems to me, some fine things
Have been laid upon your table
Jack's love for Ennis
But you only want the ones that you can't get
Linving straight because he is too scared to try it with Jack.
Desperado, oh, you ain't gettin' no younger
They were no longer young men...
Your pain and your hunger, they're drivin' you home
Ennis is always drawn back to Jack, where his home should have been
Your prison is walking through this world all alone
Ennis after Jack's death
Don't your feet get cold in the winter time?
The sky won't snow and the sun won't shine
It's hard to tell the night time from the day
In one word: lonley
You're losin' all your highs and lows
Reminds me of Heath' answer to a journalist's question what will happen in Ennis's life after the movie ends: "Not much."
Desperado, why don't you come to your senses?
Come down from your fences, open the gate
Again: Ennis, you damn stubborn mule, wake up before it's too late. But this damn movie won't change, no matter how often I see it, no matter how desperately I wish for Ennis to come to his senses earlier.
It may be rainin', but there's a rainbow above you
The sweet life may have been difficult to accomplish - but Jack would have been there to try it together
You better let somebody love you, before it's too late
No words for this. Just tears :'(

Absolutely "Desperado" calls Ennis to mind.
Some time ago I posted this over at Chez Treblay on the thread "A Some that Reminds me of Brokeback Mountain."
Glad to see others think of Ennis when they hear it, too. :)
Bucky:
Desperado is exactly the song that fits Ennis. The problem was that Ennis waited until it was too late. I know one of the saddest things that could happen is being left with nothing but yourself. I know it brings tears to my eyes every time when Alma Jr. is at Ennis' trailor and she said "Daddy you need more furniture" and Ennis said "when you ain't got nothin' you don't need nothin'." I knew when he said that he was thinking of not having Jack in his life anymore. So when he didn't have Jack anymore he had nothin' therefore he didn't need nothin'. He still has Alma Jr. and Jenny but they can only do so much. :(

Amen. This song, flitting by on Mix 106.5, gave me solace in the first few days after seeing the movie.
