Solution:  I piled them in a decorative bowl!  ;D

Good thinking there. :)
For my part, I continue to hang back two or three ornaments a day. Thankfully, my cat is content with the lower branches of the tree. All the ornaments which are special to me hang in the upper branches. So far not one ornament is broken, thanks to the carpet under the tree.

All my decorations are now down.. it feels very very bare..
