How do you consecrate a new home?

In one of Kerry's threads, where he's describing his collection of gods, he mentions that it is traditional to have a Ganesh facing the front door.

Ganesh, the elephant-headed Indian god, is, among other things, the Lord of Beginnings.

David In Indy:
Mom always placed a broom out on the front porch. She hung it on a clip next to the front door.It was one of those small straw brooms with a wooden handle - about 3 feet in length.

She used to place acorns on the windowsills too. She said they would protect the house from lightening strikes. I think it's an old Native American superstition and I'm not really sure how acorns would ward away lightening strikes, but she swore by it and to my knowledge lightening never struck our house. :-\

And yes, sage is used for house blessings. Mom always kept a few smudge sticks in a drawer and she would burn some on New Years Day. We also smudged the Nativity scene on Chistmas Eve with the sage.

I like the idea of placing a jar near the front door Lynne. That's a good idea. I'm not OVERLY superstitious, but I figure why not... it's better to be safe than sorry.

Smudge the place first.  White sage is good, sweet grass as well, while walking around the inside from front door all the way around and back to the front door while - chanting/praying/doing whatever you feel will help you accomplish your goal .  Then asperse the house with water and I like to use a sprig of fresh rosemary to do it, chanting/praying, etc following the same path.  Then finally sprinkle salt around the home and sweep it out.

Then of course, bring in symbolic food for the home, wine and bread.

This always works for me.
