Rescuers Free Dog Trapped On Icy Lake

Nearby Resident Hears Dog's Distressed Howling


BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Rescuers who saved a dog trapped for more than 10 hours in the icy waters of Lake Lemon found the lucky dog's owner Friday morning.

Animal Management Officer Rebecca Brown said she was contacted by the boyfriend of the dog's owner. She was told the 10-year-old chow and German shepherd mix ran away about two weeks ago after returning from a trip to the veterinarian. Brown said the owner, an elementary school teacher, feared that the dog had died.

The dog was rescued Tuesday from ice and mud about 200 feet from shore at the lake near Bloomington. The dog was taken to a veterinarian for treatment of hypothermia.

A nearby resident heard the dog's distressed howling about 2 a.m. Tuesday but did not notify the Monroe County Sheriff's Department until 10 hours later.

Brown arrived to find the dog stuck in ice and mud about 200 feet from the shoreline. The dog was partially submerged in the water and not moving.

But when the dog began to move and yelp, Brown and several other rescuers, including volunteer firefighters, began their rescue effort.

They borrowed a neighbor's boat and used it to reach the dog, which was marooned in about two feet of water covered by ice, with the dog apparently stuck in a layer of thick mud.

Using the boat to make their way across the water, the crew took turns using an ax to break the ice as they moved toward the dog, which perked up and moved toward his approaching rescuers.

Once rescuers got close, Brown pulled the dog into the boat and wrapped the shivering animal with a blanket.

Dog Rescued From Ice Reunited With Owner

Owner's Partner Recognized Picture In Paper

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Days after being pulled from an ice-covered lake, a 10-year-old dog missing for two weeks is back in the warmth of her owner's home.

Bella the wayward chow-German shepherd mix was reunited Friday with her family, three days after her rescue from Lake Lemon.

Bella was rescued Tuesday from ice and mud about 200 feet from shore on Lake Lemon near Bloomington. Monroe County animal control officials used a boat to pull her to safety after the dog spent about 10 hours in the lake's icy waters. The canine was taken to a veterinarian for treatment of hypothermia.

When her photograph appeared on the front page of Friday's editions of The Herald-Times, Hannah Shuler's partner, Boyd McGinnis, spotted Bella's familiar brown muzzle.

While Shuler had given up on seeing Bella again, her daughter, Ramona, had remained optimistic.

"She believed that people might have found her and that she was saved," Shuler said. "And as it turns out, Ramona was right."

When Shuler and her daughter arrived home Friday, Bella was waiting inside by the door.

Shuler said Bella had vanished two weeks ago after being let outside following a trip to the vet for breathing problems. She feared Bella might have gone off to die because the Bella didn't seem much better after receiving some medicine.
