Rufus Wainwright

(1/3) > >>

chowhound:
I first became acquainted with Rufus Wainwright through the moving song - The Maker Makes - that he composed for Brokeback. I have been interested in his career since then.

I knew he had been working on an opera called Prima Donna which is set in the Paris of the 1970s and is about an aging opera singer who is trying to become a top-flight singer once again. That it's in French should be of no surprise as it's set in Paris and Rufus Wainwright grew up in Montreal.

I hadn't heard much more about it until today when the Globe and Mail (Toronto) announced that it's to have its North American premiere here in Toronto next summer at the annual Luminato Festival. Luminato is an international arts festival that was started here about two or three years ago. It runs for a couple of weeks and usually takes place in June.

Kelda:
Ooooh - interesting! Thanks Chowhound!

Sheriff Roland:
Great news for (us) Torontonians.  :)

Et ça va être en français? Encore mieux!!  ;D

CellarDweller:
Well, I've never been a fan of Rufus, to be honest, his one song on the soundtrack (Maker Makes) is the one song I can't stand.

I do wish him success....hope that "Prima Donna" is a smash.

Well in defense of his  music.  I never knew of him before his work on BBM.  But I tend to like a music man that can cover all venues
of style and time.  I went to one of his concerts here in Portland.  Myself and my two grandaughters went together.  It was a great show.
He has lots of different types of music to choose from.  He is funny, and not one of those types of stars that thinks he is all that.  He is
self effacing and silly at times, and puts on a good for your money show.  Its not timed to the minute, and then over.  He really is inspired
by the amount of reaction he gets from his audience.  Then takes more time.  It was nearly two hours by the time it was over.  Not at
all draggy or "ok how much more of this is there going to be?"   \
I would do it again in a minute.  I loved it.  But an opera,,?,I don't understand french.  I would have to have Kelsey along for an interpreter.
So thats probably never going to happen....  But I have bought three of his albums.
