On television, yes. 1950s? More like 1950s-1980s.

Okay, this person played Moriarty in the show:

(Caution, this show is very difficult to find by Googling!)

Front-Ranger:
Maybe this is pointing to the fact that until recently all leading men looked very similar to each other.
