"Let's Do It (Let's Fall in Love)" Cole Porter's masterpiece--and others
southendmd:
Here's an early version, from 1929. Tom Barrett, directed by Nat Star. Totally different lyrics in London then.

This is my (not very good) transcript, based on what I can make out. Fun tempo!
The nightingales in the dark do it,
Larks crazy for a lark do it,
Let's do it, let's fall in love.
(_____) in the house do it,
When they're out of season grouse do it,
Let's do it, let's fall in love.
The most sedate barnyard fowls do it,
When a chanticleer cries,
High-browed old owls do it,
They're supposed to be wise.
(_______) flocks on the rocks do it,
Even little cuckoos in their clocks do it,
Let's do it, let's fall in love.

This is wonderful: Leslie "Hutch" Hutchinson's version from the 1930s. Very similar to the long lyrics above, but with some British changes. For instance, instead of rhyming "clerk" with "work", in British "clerk" rhymes with "park".

Also, I fear shad roe isn't well known in the British Isles, so that bit is changed to:
The most refined school of cod do it,
Though it shocks them, I fear,
Sturgeon, thank God, do it,
Have some caviar, dear.

This is from "Can-Can" with Frank Sinatra and Shirley McLaine. They kept some of the racist lyrics at the beginning.
Who came up with this bastardization?
The royal set sans regret, did it,
And they considered it fun,
Marie Antoinette did it,
With or without Napoleon.

From the "Aeolian Company", here is a piano roll from 1928.

Another nasty version includes these lyrics:
I've heard that lizards and frogs do it,
Layin' on a rock
They say that roosters do it,
With a doodle and cock.
:o
I'm still partial to the insect verse:
The most refined ladybugs do it,
When a gentleman calls,
Moths in your rugs do it,
What's the use of moth balls?
