Free Fall - Freier Fall

morrobay:
Speaking of subtitles, I just read a critic's review, he complained about something I also wondered.

Max Riemelt's character is shown as "Kay" in the subtitles, but it's pronounced Kai by the actors, which sounds much better to me.  So why is it subtitled incorrectly?  Seems odd to have a proper noun misspelled.

fritzkep:
Kai is the normal spelling for this Scandinavian/north German name, but Kay is a less commonly seen variant. Both would be pronounced "kye".

morrobay:
I didn't know that, thank you.

fritzkep:
For some reason I couldn't reply yesterday.

Just a note, Kai is in Germany and most of Scandinavia an exclusively male name.

Although in Sweden it can be female.

morrobay:
Yes, somehow the thread got locked but southendmd unlocked it for us.

That's very interesting about the names.

I noticed this: VARIANTS: Kay (Frisian),

and it made me think of a breed of horse, the Friesian, and I wondered if it was German (I am appallingly, embarrassingly bad at geography, but I have other qualities   :) ).  I looked up both spellings and found this:

The Friesian is a horse breed originating in Friesland, in the Netherlands.
The Frisians are a Germanic ethnic group native to the coastal parts of the Netherlands and Germany.

One can certainly learn a lot here  :)
