I think it's some combination of putting blind trust in everything Donald Trump says and/or hating all those people (trans people, immigrants, public-school teachers) and wanting an excuse to get rid of them.

It's ironic in so many ways. One being that, using the very gadget they're using to post on Quora or X or Facebook, etc., they can access huge amounts of correct information they could look up in five minutes. Of course, it's also full of incorrect garbage and they're not good at discerning reliable sources.

100%! It's worrying that so many people lack critical thinking skills nowadays. They've always been around, but now Trump legitimises, and even encourages, their "right" to remain ignorant.

One person I saw spreading this hoax was a medical doctor in suburban Minneapolis who ran for governor last time and is now running for state auditor. Republican, of course. But I had talked to him a year or two earlier and he'd seemed fairly sane.

He also claimed doctors were falsely reporting deaths as due to COVID, even if they actually were heart attacks or car accidents, so they could get government handouts under COVID stimulus policies. He later walked it back and said that he had no evidence that anyone was actually doing that, but that they could do it under current law.

He did not walk the litter-box thing back.
