Sad streams by the river
He'd decided to make the trip one last time.
He wasn't sure he could handle being up there alone ..
Especially at this time -
The memories cutting through him like a razor
The nightmares infecting the remnants of his sanity.
Yet ..
He'd decided to make one more trip..
He sat on a rock by the river, his head in his hands..
They'd camped here for years, at least once a year.
He recalled the days of their youth -
How they'd sat around by the fire on this very spot
How they'd overindulged on the whiskey
How he'd watch Jack bathing in the river,
His body glistening in the sun, breathtaking, beautiful..
How they'd made love till they were worn
Giddy and exhausted from their passion ..
He wiped the streams of tears leaking from his swollen eyes,
A sob escaped his throat, his shoulders trembled.
Darkness descended upon the mountain,
The sound of crickets chirping and
The soothing music of the flowing river filled the air.
He sat still on that rock by the river,
A single candle burning by his side
His head still in his hands, shivering from the cold ..
He reached into the old canvas bag beside his feet
And pulled out the stained blue denim shirt.
He held it to his lips, then he managed to speak..
"Lil' darlin, I'm sorry I couldn't bring ya up here like ya wanted..
What did ya go and do that for? Leaving me like this?
I know you were angry with me, I know I let you down..
If yer trying to punish me .. well, yer succeedin'..
You know yer all I got ..
What did ya go and do that for, Jack? Huh? "
His lips trembled, fresh streams flowed ..

Jack was in the kitchen, pushing down the lever on the toaster, when Ennis came it. Whatre ya doin? he asked.
Makin myself a late night snack of toast and peanut butter, said Jack. He peered into the toaster, waiting for it to pop, and when it did, no toast came out.
