Thanks for the prompts, Chrissi. :) Here's what popped into my head:
Don't Punch the Messenger
It happened more and more lately. A feeling that he couldn't name would rise up in an instant, traveling like a live wire through his body and curling his hand into a fist; the short, dirty fights leaving him bruised and bloodied, but, most of all, bereft.
His dad had taught him that pain sent a good message, and it sure seemed to work with K.E. when he was six. But as bad as things were back then, at least he was Something and Somewhere. He doubted that Nothing could send a message from Nowhere – let alone get one back.

I liked it. What a sad part the "nothing&nowhere" comment by Ennis is.
Your drabble makes me think of the mailbox Ennis puts the numbers on - but we know that the message he longs for will never arrive. :(
