A song that makes me think of Brokeback Mountain

<< < (13/71) > >>

Front-Ranger:
Your Neil Young post drove me to my phonograph, Toast, where I discovered that my partner and I have collected a huge number of Neil Young albums over the years! I listened to Neil Young from 1969, where the first song is "Emperor of Wyoming" but it's an instrumental. I listened to it, thinking of the Pope of Wyoming. Then there is The Loner and several other songs that remind me of BBM. But here's one from another 1969 album of his:

"Only Love Can Break Your Heart"

When you were young
and on your own
How did it feel
to be alone?
I was always thinking
of games that I was playing.
Trying to make
the best of my time.

But only love
can break your heart
Try to be sure
right from the start
Yes only love
can break your heart
What if your world
should fall apart?

I have a friend
I've never seen
He hides his head
inside a dream
Someone should call him
and see if he can come out.
Try to lose
the down that he's found.

But only love
can break your heart
Try to be sure
right from the start
Yes only love
can break your heart
What if your world
should fall apart?

I have a friend
I've never seen
He hides his head
inside a dream
Yes, only love
can break your heart
Yes, only love
can break your heart

Hi everyone, theres been a song thats allways be close to my heart. It was only ever made as a demo by a famous pop group and i only had bad copys of it. i loved the song so much i leanred to play it myself. after watching the film everytime i play it it makes me think of parts in the film.

Just Like That

Until that day
My life had been a river
Following the same, pre-destinated course,
Suddenly detouring so unexpectedly
With uncompromising force.
My strongholds broke down all too easily;
I remember well,
How it did embarrass me;
I hung on to his every smile
Marveled at his style

Just like that...
He walked into my house
As smug as a cat
He was handsome and smart
Walked away with my heart
Just like that...
He found a temporary home in my flat
Telling innocent lies
Throwing dust in my eyes
But I led him on,
Knowing that someday soon he'd be gone
Just like that...
As though he only stopped awhile for a chat;
But my secrets he learned
Leaving no stone unturned

And once again, the river's flowing slowly,
Following it's safe and uneventful course.
Now the tears have dried,
it's become a pleasant break,
I recall without remorse.
But now and then
I wonder where he is
And I will admit,
he had something that I miss.
I guess he was a rolling stone;
The only one I've known.

Just like that...
He walked into my house
As smug as a cat
He was handsome and smart
Walked away with my heart
Just like that...
He found a temporary home in my flat
Telling innocent lies
Throwing dust in my eyes
But I led him on,
Knowing that someday soon he'd be gone
Just like that...
As though he only stopped awhile for a chat;
But my secrets he learned
Leaving no stone unturned

Listening to Neil Young since 1969? Very impressive, Lee. Neil Young was the first concert I ever attended, in junior high. And After the Goldrush was one of the first albums I ever owned.

River

Its coming on christmas
Theyre cutting down trees
Theyre putting up reindeer
And singing songs of joy and peace
Oh I wish I had a river
I could skate away on....

--- End quote ---

I'm a Mitchell fan too and yeah, "River" is a very beautiful, but sad song, kinda like the feeling of BBM.  I love the way Mitchell uses some of the notes from "Jingle Bells" in it...   It's a wonderful song.

Mikaela:
I found myself often humming this one, and then all of a sudden I realized why: The rodeo announcer's "Send in the clowns!" in the scene where Jack nearly gets trampled had stuck in my mind.

Now I wonder whether that line in the movie was in fact deliberately chosen as a reminder of "Send in the Clowns" from "A little Night Music". Because the lyrics are surprisingly apt, especially seen from Jack's perspective. (They even take on the "queer" issue  ;) )

Isn't it rich?
Aren't we a pair?
Me here at last on the ground,
You in mid-air.
Send in the clowns.

Isn't it bliss?
Don't you approve?
One who keeps tearing around,
One who can't move.
Where are the clowns?
Send in the clowns.

Just when I'd stopped opening doors,
Finally knowing the one that I wanted was yours,
Making my entrance again with my usual flair,
Sure of my lines,
No one is there.

Don't you love farce?
My fault I fear.
I thought that you'd want what I want.
Sorry, my dear.
But where are the clowns?
Quick, send in the clowns.
Don't bother, they're here.

Isn't it rich?
Isn't it queer,
Losing my timing this late
In my career?
And where are the clowns?
There ought to be clowns.
Well, maybe next year.
