It's some sort of template thing, you can draw circles, ovals, and parts of both and
straight lines too.

Of course I am just wildly guessing here.

Just realized there were choices.  Then I have to go with the architects tool.  Thats exactly the sort of thing I was thinking, (guessing?) anyway.

Hmmm, it looks like some sorta key to me, but that's not on the list. So, instead, I'll go with Early Architect's Tool, mainly 'cause it seems to have been patented in 1917 (biiiig guess!).

The answer is:




This cool looking item of brass, was made in the USA and patented in 1917. It was used by Soldiers to polish their brass uniform buttons. The device was slipped underneath the button, which made polishing easier and kept the uniform free of smudges from the brass polish.  The curves and grooves around the edges made it flexible with all size and shape of button and combined with little holes on the top also facilitated the polishing of brass and silver insignative sometimes glued to cloth buttons at the time.

This is an example of the British military equivalent from the same period....I love the little "eagle" shaped hole on the top.
