I had read pieces of Slaugherhouse Five during both college. It was a bit cultish back then, and powerful. It had a big academic and popular following for a couple years. But, since about the mid 70s, few read it and no one bought it and no one talked about it.

In 1987 on the day I was leaving to tour Dresden Germany, I'm on a crammed bus in downtown San Francisco and the man sitting on the seat next to me was reading the book.
