Title: Erich Segal and Robert Parker have died
Post by: Jeff Wrangler on January 20, 2010, 05:52:21 pm
As usual from me, no links  :-\ but I heard on the NBC news on Tuesday that both Erich Segal, author of Love Story, and Robert Parker, author of the "Spencer" detective novels, have died.

It seemed to me that NBC spent more air time on Segal than on Parker. They showed a clip from the movie of Love Story of Ali McGraw uttering to Ryan O'Neal the famous line, "Love means never having to say you're sorry."  (Oy, they both looked so young. ...  :-\ ). The story also claimed that Oliver, the character played by O'Neal, was inspired by those two famous college roommates Al Gore and Tommy Lee Jones.

Robert Parker got more press here in Boston, of course.  He was a larger-than-life character.

I recall when "Spenser for Hire" was filming in the alleys in my neighborhood, more than twenty years ago, and everyone had Robert Urich sightings.

"Hey, Spen-suh!"  :)

I remember now that they said on NBC that Parker died of a heart attack at his desk, working. Now, that's the way for a writer to go.

Love Story took place in Boston too.

Love Story took place in Boston too.

Sure enough, but that's way before my time!

Robert Urich was one of my earliest crushes - Vega$ then Spenser for Hire.  I never missed a Robert B. Parker novel...I loved looking for the familiar Boston landmarks he wove into his stories.

RIP Robert Parker

Not mine.  I saw the movie when it came out and read the book then too!   :o
