Title: Protests in Iran
Post by: David In Indy on June 21, 2009, 01:30:43 am
I've been pinned to my TV. I've also been tweeting quite a bit over at Twitter.

The current news from Iran (as best as I can tell) is that the Basiji are mostly foreigners (most are speaking Arabic), the Basiji have been marking the homes of the protesters so they can return later to beat and arrest them, Neda was only 16 years old and she was shot in front of her father by the Basiji and has since become the face of the opposition, raids have been conducted at night in Iranian homes (CNN aired an appalling video of one of these raids... you could hear the women and children screaming) and the protesters plan to return to the streets tomorrow.

Have you been monitoring the protests via the Internet and the news channels?

I have had a working experience with a foreign company in Iran almost 20 years ago. I am thinking of some of the people I worked with, in particular of a young family I used to know.
We always detected a lot of unhappiness. On one occasion I got stopped in the street by the Pasdarans (not sure about spelling), the guards of the 1979 revolution,  because of my hair coming out from under the scarf. Having got stopped for so little I can well imagine the suppression now.

Actually I have not been following it closely at all. I guess it is one of those things where I really don't know of anyone from Iran so it seems a long way awat for me. I know that what is going on there is terrible, but beyond that I don't know much about the details.

The father in the young family I mentioned in my previous post once showed us his back with  numerous  permanent scars from lashing. I suppose he was lucky he had been lashed and not killed.
Just read on the BBC website 10 people killed.

He said he had been lashed because he opposed the current regime. He might have given us more details but many years have gone by and I can' t remember.
Friendships outside work were discouraged. It had to be done discreetely ...

Writing in haste as I am in an Internet Cafe' miles away from home, (London). It seems that the UK has evacuated, or thinking of evacuating, their embassy.
