Randy Quaid dropped his lawsuit against Focus Features. Although speculation is that there might have been a confidential payment made, both parties are simply reporting that he dropped the suit. Either way, I am personally glad to see this distasteful blemish on the Brokeback landscape over and done with.

Maybe he realized that he didn't have a chance in hell!

He's going to get hired again real soon.....NOT!
-
Good news, but I wish to goodness this had never come up in the first place. Anything that sheds a negative light on this beautiful, life-enhancing movie pains me greatly. And yes, I think many producers will think twice before hiring Mr. Quaid on another movie.

Too funny! He drops the suit saying they settled with Focus. He says Focus will pay him an "unspecified amount" in bonus pay. Then Focus responds by saying they never negotiated and are surprised at his comment...but obviously pleased with his decision to drop.

I really hope they didn't give him an unspecified amount! There are other, less greedy people that deserved it more, I'm sure!
(By the way, someone else started this thread a little bit ago and for some reason it was moved. :( )

NO reason not to have it in two places LOL, we still have a few tremblians who are too shy to venture out yet..LOL

Because starting May 1 threads are going to be moved to the places they belong....so Phillip moved it to the Movie Resources board...so its now over there....

QUAID BROKEBACK LAWSUIT TAKES CURIOUS TURN
LATEST: Actor RANDY QUAID has dropped his $10 million (GBP5.8 million) lawsuit against the producers of BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN, insisting they have reached an agreement to pay him a bonus. The star filed the suit in Los Angeles Superior Court in March (06), claiming he was underpaid for his supporting role in the film as rancher JOE AGUIRRE. Quaid alleged Focus Features duped him into deferring his normal payment for the film by touting the production as an independent art-house film that couldn't afford to pay actors their normal rate. However, a Focus Features spokesperson is adamant no settlement has been agreed with the actor. According to Quaid's representatives, the agreement was unofficial and the actor has requested the bonus be split among the cast members. The Focus Features spokesperson says, "The circumstances of him dropping the suit are as mysterious as the circumstances under which he filed his claim. "Focus Features never negotiated, offered or agreed to any settlement agreement with Mr Quaid or his attorneys, but we're happy to put this behind us, and do wish Mr Quaid the best." The Oscar-nominated film, starring HEATH LEDGER and JAKE GYLLENHAAL, has grossed nearly $160 million (GBP91 million) worldwide.

:)
Quaid case takes queer turn.
interesting choice of words, Becky :D
I still do not know what really transpired - especially since Focus said there would be no payout - so is Quaid lying ???

NO reason not to have it in two places LOL, we still have a few tremblians who are too shy to venture out yet..LOL
Well they better get over it because May 1st is here and I am going to start moving posts that are especially relevant to Movie Resources over there.
The rest of the system will not bite, I promise... ;D

Don't like it at all. :-\
I'm sorry, but with more than 20,000 posts on here and new people arriving all the time, I consider it a very high priority to maintain a comprehensive Movie Resources section with news about the film and issues related to it in that specific forum so people can find it. We're more than just a discussion site....
I am not insistent on too many things, but this one is important to me and the overall mission of the site. You can still discuss the issues surrounding it wherever, but I want to make sure the news is in the Movie Resources section.
-
If he's lying...I'm sure he did to "save face"!
-
Um, either Quaid is lying to save face or Focus is doing a spin on what they are offering him. They didn't give him a 'payout' which they can deny with impunity, but what else might they have given him? Stock options/additional contracts/percentage points on a future project, etc?

Cute Phil ;D real cute. Actually we CT moderators DO keep encouraging others to venture out more but there are still a few who seem to be terminally shy LOL! But I do agree that all threads do need to be kept current and whenever possible appropriate messages need to be posted in appropriate forums.
Thanks... :-*

Oh, ok, Phillip! I was worried that if I posted something personal on here, you might move it to Our Daily Thoughts or something like that. I'm glad to know it's just the movie resources. Sorry for being fussy.

Ha ha, fantastic - this *is* too funny:
'In the interest of respecting the spirit of the film, we are happy to refrain from coughing "bullshit" into a balled fist, and instead look away as Quaid and Focus doff their shirts atop an idyllic hill, embrace in seeming anger, then tumble down its grassy slope in a tangle of giggles and stolen kisses."
I'm still chuckling... :D

I am mostly concerned with stuff for Movie Resources. That is about 95% of it. I want to make sure there is a permanent archive of such things there for people just seeing the movie for the first time. I won't be moving personal posts around.

This was a bit more revealing. I liked the bit at the end that has a go at the studios execs. It rattles my anti-corporate-greed nerves. :-\

Maybe FOCUS promised they will make him a major character in another film and he will get lots of money. It will be an Oscar worthy film and he'll get the lead. ;D
Quaid is an odd duck... Yes Becky, it's rather queer how he dropped the whole thing. That why I thought of the a.m. scenario.

Randy Quaid drops "Brokeback Mountain" lawsuit
By Arthur Spiegelman
Thu May 4, 9:09 PM ET
Actor Randy Quaid has dropped his $10 million lawsuit against the makers of Brokeback Mountain, saying they agreed to pay him more money, but the studio said on Thursday it knew of no deal.
Quaid's lawsuit had alleged that Focus Features, a unit of General Electric-owned Universal Pictures, deliberately underpaid him and others who agreed to appear in the low-budget film about two cowboys who fall in love.
The lawsuit had been closely monitored by many actors who forgo their usual fees on major Hollywood studio films to make low-budget movies they believe have artistic merit.
Quaid, who played a homophobic rancher in "Brokeback," said he was dropping the suit because Focus informed him indirectly it intended to resolve the matter amicably. He also offered to share his bonus with other underpaid actors in the film.
But Focus on Thursday said it had no deal with the actor and added in a statement, "The circumstances of him dropping the suit are as mysterious as the circumstances under which he filed his claim."
The statement said Focus never negotiated, offered or agreed to any settlement with Quaid or his attorneys. Quaid's lawyer insisted that Focus did so through what he called a "back-door" communication.
"Brokeback" cost about $14 million to make and grossed more than $160 million worldwide after triggering a debate on whether the topic of homosexual love should be given mainstream respectability and earning an Oscar for its director, Ang Lee.
In his suit filed on March 24 in Los Angeles Superior Court, Quaid said the producers tricked him into appearing in the movie for what was "effectively a donation of his time" by "falsely representing it as a low-budget, art-house film, with no prospect of making any money."
The suit also claimed that "from day one, defendants fully intended the film would not be made on a low budget, would be given a worldwide release and would be supported as the studio picture it always was secretly intended to be."

Yay! Randy Quaid dropped his lawsuit!

This just tickled my funnybone.

"The star dropped his suit against Focus Features, which claimed he was bamboozled into accepting a low fee for an art-house film, only to see Brokeback Mountain backed by Universal and grossing 160 million. "Randy Quaid is an instantly recognizable household name and much-admired actor on the world's stage with a worldwide box office total of nearly $2 billion. His likeness, talent and name are worth millions of dollars and are solely his property," the lawsuit stated. Yes, I think everyone can agree that we all rushed out of the house when we heard about a tragic gay cowboy movie starring Randy Quaid. In the back of our minds, we were hoping it'd be as good as National Lampoon's Backwoods Vacation."
