What a good idea, David! I'm gonna try that! :) :)
But I'm sure I can do it better than 95% of the world population (though sure not 95% of THIS population).
I have done this - but it's done in individual scenes:
* When I'm walking around the desert terrain in the morning.
* Just as I turn the lights out and I am waiting for sleep - I play out scenes
* f there's a visual trigger during my day (a man wearing a Stetson standing in front of a mailbox, for instance)
The soundtrack plays constantly in my head.
Oh , the desert would be the PERFECT place to think about Brokeback Mountain! I sure wish I lived near to one. My neighbor's sandbox is the closest thing to a desert around here!
When I'm still awake when it's time for Ennis to get married, I skip that part, and pretty much any other part that doesn't involve Ennis and Jack being together.
I always skip the Alma scenes - except for her little star turn at the reunion. I love the stark contrast between her 'mysery face' and the boys' soaring, devastating, euphoria. Lureen I leave in :).
Must time the wife-less version of the movie and see if it is indeed, 45 mins!
W
LOL. I often "fast forward" through the wife scenes when I watch it in my mind too! This may help explain why I can watch it all in 45 minutes.... or something like that! :)
Hey David,
I often inject aspects of the movie into my own life , and i do sometimes go to bed , up on Brokeback. I picture you stroking the dog tenderly , like Heath did , when Jake removed a thorn from the sheeps foot , it`s so easy to let your mind carry you away, and as i`ve always said the strength and power of this movie finishes within your own mind. I feel that is why it has `Got` us so bad , it`s what happens in your heart and head that makes you want to keep going up that Mountain , and staying there no matter what . xxx Kaz
Part of me always wants to exclude the wives from the story. I mean, I think they were portrayed wonderfully and they are very well-written characters (and I honestly do sympathize with them). I suppose that's cause, usually, their presence means one of the boys is longing for the other and it makes me feel their despair. (Which is freakin' BRILLIANT.)
I haven't tried rewatching the entire movie in my head but many a times, I've gone and rewatched certain scenes in my head. Last night, for example, I triggered the very first shot and it's parallel shot in the ending (that sounds random but I just thought of them -- and felt so empty) and then after that, jumped to the Lureen telephone call and I was totally haunted by the "He always said it was his place" line. Many times, I'll recite Jack's "You have no idea how bad it gets" monologue in my head.
David, it's official. I'm going to do a wife-less screening and time it ;D.
can't do it in my head though, owing to a couple of children demanding parental participation in their own 'life of the mind' ;D. Will do it tonight with DVD - right after LOST 8).
guess I'll cut at the end of Ennis' alley breakdown, back on for Jack's visit to Aguirre the next summer, and cut again til reunion. Oops, forgot Jimbo and Ennis on the road gang :-\. Jimbo I can live without, but I'll include him in the interests of scientific accuracy! A shame I'll have to miss Randall though - I just love everything about that scene, and everyone in it!
back with full report tomorrow - hopefully!
You guys have much more mental discipline than I do. I'll think, OK, now I'm going to replay [whatever scene] in my mind. But as it goes along, I'll get distracted. Something will make me think of a different scene. Or remind me of something I've read here. Or give me an idea I'd like to post.
Tell you what, though -- you know how they say that people who are prisoners of war or kept in solitary confinement are able to stay sane by going over some book or plan or whatever in their minds, detail by detail? Well, if that ever happens to me, I will emerge knowing every single frame, every blade of grass or drop of water or gust of wind, in Brokeback Mountain.
Well, now I'm curious, David. How many times have you watched it? For me, it's "only" 14 -- about five times as often as I've ever watched any other movie, but in this crowd, it's practically newbie.
Am I obsessed? :)
Yes -- but in a good way! The same way we all are! :D
Sorry David, didn't quite get around to the Wife-free version last night :-\.
LOST was very :o making and I think it ruined me for anything sensible! Planning to try again tonight tho ;).
incidentally, 50 viewings is impressive :P
W
Suddenly I began thinking about "Brokeback Mountain". And you know what? I "watched" Brokeback Mountain from beginning to end in my mind. (It is too late now, but tomorrow I am going to go check and see if I missed anything). I actually saw the whole movie in my mind! I watched it. All of it, I think.
Wow David, you're good! I never thought about replaying the entire movie in my head, even at the midnight hour! I'll have to try it. I think I can do it, too!
I usually just let the visions unfold as they will, and I never quite know which scene will play out and when. I can't help it, but the send night in the tent usually takes hold every night and if it does not keep me awake, will comfort me enough to allow me to sleep. That image of Jack cuddling Ennis, kissing his hair and...oh well, you know... it is so sweet, so sexy, so right! Watching Brokeback from beginning to end in my mind? I can't think of anything more pleasant to fill the ocassional empty hours!
My favorite scene in the movie (and you probably already know because I have said it so many times on IMDb) is when Jack and Ennis are riding side by side on their horses and Ennis looks over to Jack and flashes that beautiful smile. I don't think Jack saw this because he continued to look forward the whole time. But I like to think he caught this smile out of the corner of his eye. I don't know why I love this scene so much. But I do! :)
Hi David925:
I think you have mentioned that scene twice now, in the past couple of days, and I'm still not sure which one you mean... Not the one about playing the harmonica and scarin' off the sheep, no?
Are you speaking of a much later camping trip, when they are riding together and their horses are ever so close, almost touching? Is that the scene?
'Cause in that scene, I love how the horses are justsoclose together, makes me think that they just want to get as close as they can to each other, (Ennis and Jack, not LSP and Cigar Butt ;D) even while out riding. I sure wish Ang Lee hadn't scrimped so much on the tender moments of the later years. That's why I find fanfic such a comfort these days, especially since I am suffering through a viewing embargo of the DVD and of Youtube.
Please let me know will ya, 'cause I don't specifically remember Ennis smiling, and that's just not right.
Jane
My favorite one though is when Ennis tells Jack he is going to scare the sheep away (Jack is playing the harmonica in that scene). If you look real close, just after Ennis finishes talking, he looks back over to Jack and gives him a beautiful smile. It is a cute, sexy, beautiful, sincere smile. I can watch that scene over and over again. I don't know why I love it so much. But I do! :)
Please let me know will ya, 'cause I don't specifically remember Ennis smiling, and that's just not right.

Jane... if you have the DVD, you can see the "Ennis smile" if you jump to the time 37:00:00 on your DVD player.
I can't think of anything more pleasant to fill the ocassional empty hours!
When I first saw the title of this message I thought .... hmmm ... what do you think I can do when the lights go out? (Let me give you a clue ... my boyfriend is in SC, I am in IN ... by myself. I won't explain any further).
Anyway .... yes, I can see the whole film in my mind. I am as obsessed as you ... I have lost count of the times I have watched this and it never gets old. I wish I could slow down, but I just can't give up my "fix" .... my "drug of choice". It doesn't hurt that these two guys are incredibly sexy!
Jane... if you have the DVD, you can see the "Ennis smile" if you jump to the time 37:00:00 on your DVD player. You have to look closely, and to get a better look at the smile, pause it and then zoom in on Ennis. (I do it all the time!). If you do, you will se what I am talking about. I would love to find a screen cap of Ennis in that scene. I'm still scouring the internet for one, and I haven't foundit yet! I'm going to keep looking though! :D
I love that scene (as I love so many). Ennis definitely smiles. I think it shows his unadulterated love for Jack. He is more open to his feelings because he is in the freedom of BBM. It is always in the mountains where Ennis can show his unfettered passion (for Jack). The tragedy is that he cannot allow himself to transfer that love, that passion off of the mountain. With Jack, Ennis can be his authentic self. Jack is the only one who truly knows and understands Ennis. Ohhhhhh!! This just makes me so sad! :(
Diane - I think you hit the nail on the head. That smile does show Ennis' unadulterated love for Jack. I always thought it was so sexy and sweet looking, but I always knew there was something more to it than simply being a "cute smile".
I can really see Ennis' love for Jack in that smile. I sure wish I could find a screen shot (cap) of that scene somewhere on the Internet. I would turn it into wallpaper for my computer. :D
I think I've seen it. Let me do some investigation and I will attach if I find anything.
You know what really annoys me? All of the pictures with Heath and Michelle since they are a couple in real life. Drives me nuts! This story is about Ennis and Jack. Get the women out of it! (am I not terrible!? ::))
You're not terrible at all! It is funny that you should say this, because I feel the same way - keep the women out. I hate to admit it sometimes, but I get angry when I see scenes of the boys with their wives, especially Jack and Lureen, for some reason. Yes, keep the girls out of it!
Well, I am a gay man, so both of you probably know I definately feel that way! I wonder why they seem to feel it necessary to put the women in the pictures so often?
Good! I am not the only one who gets annoyed!! This film is about these two sexy men (whoops ... I mean, about these two men, who happen to be sexy). Their lives with the women are a lie .... so, why advertise it? Show the good stuff! ;D
Show the good stuff! ;D
Diane - Here is the good stuff (in my opinion anyway!)...
Sorry about the quality of the pics. I took the pictures from my television screen...There is that beautiful smile I keep talking about....(http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j43/Davidindy/ennis1.jpg)Zooming in just a little bit...(http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j43/Davidindy/8cf47511.jpg)Zooming in a little bit more.... ah, THERE we go!(http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j43/Davidindy/ennis3.jpg)
If anyone knows where I can find these screen shots on the Internet, "I sure would be obliged to ye", as Ennis would say! :)
This is amazing! Oh, look how lovingly Ennis looks at Jack. I think about those loving looks in the middle of the night when I can't sleep. Ennis liked to look at Jack ::) and I think it is so endearing. Okay, I won't get started! Getting up right now and walking it off of me!! ;)
I'd have to agree, I love the look Ennis is giving Jack in this shot. Thanks for the zooming in!! I will be thinking about that shot all night now!!
Haha! Oh great, see I'm even thinking about it now, and that was after I posted on here the first time!! Awww...but the smile is so great and meaningful!! I love it! ;D You're welcome!!
To David925 and to Midnight24:
Are you two Heathens (you are Heathens, are you not?) acquainted with Ennis and Ellery (fanfic)?
