Title: Let's share beauty tips
Post by: opinionista on July 09, 2007, 11:04:21 am
I know the idea of beauty tips might seem shallow to some, but the truth is that we follow some or have a few tricks of our own. Don't we?  I was thinking it'll be fun to share some. Guys too!

Here's mine. Vitamin E. I put on vitamin E oil on my face every night before going to bed. I put on both a night cream and vitamin E oil.  It's said to protect the skin against oxidative stress including sun damage.

Any one has tips to share?

Well, i I don't think it's as shallow as it seems, the body is a temple, right? I don't care a lot about what someone looks like, but I do care about health!

My advice is: don't put on creames which consist of paraffinum liquidum. This makes your skin 'addicted' to it!

Drink lots of water, eat lots of fruit and vegetables. Easy to say, hard to do sometimes...  ::)

Have a propper night sleep, i.e. spend less time in front of the screen  . Not hard, but impossible for me.

Be sure to remove all make up before retiring, and clean your skin well.  Mild soap and water.  I dont think fancy stuff is all necessary, just clean and moisturize.  Plain vaseline is good I think..

Don't spend a lot of money for department store makeup and treatments.  Ignore the fancy made up names of the ingredients in the skin creams.  The drugstore products have the exact same substances in them, the expensive stuff just has fancier packages and names.

Cool idea for a thread, btw.

Lately, I am in love with Boots' Vitamin Recovery mask. I apply it almost every nite and I leave it on all nite, I don't rinse it off. It blends into the skin, it is not like a mask. The next day my skin feels so great! I love almost anything by Boots, The Body Shop, or Lush.

Lee, that sounds interesting, I never heard of Boots or I never noticed it.  Where do you buy it?

It's a British line of products. I get 'em at Target. They are fantastic!! That vitamin recovery mask undoes a whole nite of carousing too!!

Olive oil.. (of the extra virgin variety with all the fatty acids in tact) - excellent not only for cooking  and as a health remedy, but for the skin as well (as in moisturizer).  :)

Yes it is, partly because it got lots of vitamin E. That's the only oil I use for cooking but it is best if you use the extra virgin.

Thanks, Lee.  I haven't been to Target in a long time, I don't like the big stores, but I will go and try some for sure. :)

I hate to haveta send you to Target but it's the only place I know in the U.S. where you can get it. 'Nother product by Boots I like is their body butter. It's as light as a souffle but intensely fragrant and smoothing. I love to smear it all over me before bed, rub it in and then slip into the sheets...

I looooove Burt's Bees, I have their hand cream and lipstick!  :D

I can highly recommend everything by Dr. Hauschka! It's completely natural and it smells great! It's a German brand that is becoming highly popular on Hollywood movie sets right now.

Also, I love the Bodyshop's body butters, especially the passion fruit version.

Everything by Biotherm is wonderful!

Sunscreen sunscreen sunscreen sunscreen.

The higher SPF the better and use it daily, every time you go outside during the day.

I started using a heavy-duty sunscreen and stopped going to the beach/pool/outside during the height of the sunlight when I was in my mid- 20s and people to this day underestimate my age.

Thats becoimng increasingly one that I'm becoming more aware of. I should really start wearing it at home too in the summer - as I guess my scottish skin can get burnt anywhere!

I have tubes of hand creme, just about everywhere. In my nighstand, in the bathroom, in the kitchen, in my handbag, at work...

I love using it. (with a sunscreen of course)

Does anybody here ever have those tiny blood vessels on your cheeks? I have a lot of freckles (that I have no problem with), but also some of the miniscule visible blood vessels, what can you do about it? We call it couperose...

 ???

You can get them lasered, I guess. I haven't had it done, but I've heard of it.

Yes it is, partly because it got lots of vitamin E. That's the only oil I use for cooking but it is best if you use the extra virgin.

There was a piece in the New Yorker recently about how a lot of the olive oil that gets sold as extra-virgin is actually not even olive oil, it's other kinds of oil mixed with a little olive. It's illegal to sell this, but apparently it happens a lot. I've always been kind of suspicious of those cheaper EVOOs ...

Back to cosmetics brands, my most trusted one is Paula's Choice, http://www.cosmeticscop.com/ (http://www.cosmeticscop.com/). It's made by Paula Begoun, the author of Don't Go to the Cosmetics Counter Without Me and other books that investigate cosmetics ingredients and reveal, as Cameron said, that there often is little if any difference between the ingredients in expensive department store brands and cheap drugstore brands. The main difference is in how they're packaged and marketed.

Anyway, Paula's Choice stuff is fragrance-free (which I love), reasonably priced, simply packaged, and as effective as those products ever are. I really trust them because I trust her. You'll almost never see her interviewed in a magazine, because she reveals how much of cosmetic companies' claims are just marketing schemes (and magazines depend on cosmetics industry advertising).

I'm in Spain so I suppose here we are more likely to get actual olive oil since it is a local product. However, there have been problems with it too.  You have to be careful. I have a friend whose family grows olives and exchange them for freshly pressed oil. She often gives me some, and it tastes very different to the ones sold in supermarkets.

When they came out with Pam -- cooking oil in an aerosol can, which you spray on pans so the food won't stick -- in an extra-virgin olive oil variety, I got pretty suspicious.  >:(

For my birthday a few days ago, my family gave me three Lush products: WICCA Mighty Muscle is a massage bar, Baby Face is for the face and neck, and Ring of Roses is a soap. I am in heaven! I recommend them all!
