Title: Heath Ledger Film Festival - Saturday Events
Post by: louisev on February 02, 2008, 01:43:34 pm
Leslie (MaineWriter) and I live at opposite ends of the country, but we like to watch movies together, so we began to do what we call 'simulcasting', which is to watch a DVD at the same time, while we are on our computers and then discuss it afterwards.  We would like to open this entertaining alternative to the rest of Bettermost as a way of honoring the memory of Heath  Ledger by scheduling Simulcast DVD viewings for the entire forum.

We will announce a Heath Ledger film in advance, to give other members a chance to rent it, Netflix it or purchase it, and on successive Saturdays at 2 p.m. Eastern time, we will be viewing it, opening a thread for discussion of that movie.  If you like, view 'with us'!  Otherwise, if you get to view the movie at any time during that weekend, we will have an open discussion of the film.  I know I have only seen a total of 3 Heath Ledger movies and would like to branch out.

So starting February 16 we will start our Heath Ledger Film Festival with the early Australian film:  'Two Hands'  This should give people plenty of opportunity to buy or find it in Netflix.  11 a.m. Pacific time, 2 p.m. Eastern time, 8 p.m. Central European Time.  Please let us know what you think of the idea and please join us for the discussion each week starting February 16!!

Please let us know what you think of the Film Festival, whether you plan to join us and any other suggestions. This will also be announced in the Social Events Roundup.

I love this idea, and the choice of movie is great as well, Two hands was the fist movie i ever seen him in.

seeing as your starting with Two hands why not move on to the next one made 10 things i hate about you (or maybe they were the other way round)and from there watch them in order of release date. that way you can watch him grow as an actor and person and see how he changes over time.
I REALLY didn't describe that they way i wanted lacking in sleep and brain function at the moment  :) but i'm sure you kind of get what i'm saying. Hopefully ???

I think this is a good idea.  But regrettably I can't participate due to time difference, in fact, I'm not sure if I could watch a Heath film yet.  Anyway, it's great to celebrate Heath in this way.

What a nice idea   :) . I work that evening but, since I own that movie it's no problem. In fact i own all movies up to I'm not here which isn't released on DVD yet.....I know, I'm addicted.....

We tried to pick a time that would work for about half the world, and we knew it would be hard for folks in Asia and Australia, unless they are insomniacs (sorry, yb!). But the idea is that not all viewing has to be synchronous. If you want to participate, sometime during the weekend of Feb 16, watch "Two Hands," and then post comments here in this thread.

Bec, I think your recommendation to watch "10 Things I Hate About You" on Feb 23rd is a fine idea.

I love the idea, but Saturdays at 11am are my husband's guitar rehearsals, so I'm on child duty.  I guess I could try to make those Saturday play dates into reality.  I do know that that first Saturday is an ixnay for me, due to a precious friend's third birthday party.

I do intend to attempt asynchronous participation by ordering Two Hands from Blockbuster and watching it, maybe the night before or sumpn.

It looks like a lot of people may have the same idea.  I just put TWO HANDS in my Netflix queue and it's got a note that says there's a 'Short Wait.'  I'm glad that people are discovering or rediscovering Heath's movies.  I may not be able to participate in the simulcasting on a regular basis, but I'll try to make the discussions.

I put it in my queue a few days ago and it has gone from "short wait" to "long wait." Oh well, I still have more than a week. We'll see how it goes.

I can't find Two Hands online here.  :-\

I love the idea of a movie festival though. I'll keep checking this thread to see when I'll be able to join in.

I already have:
- BBM  ::)
- Casanova
- Candy
- Ned Kelly

I think this is a really cool Idea Leslie and Louise.  I'd love to be in the club.  I haven't tried to rent any Heath Ledger films from Blockbuster because I just assumed they'd all be hard to get.  I do have A Knights Tale, Ten Things I hate about you, and Brokeback Mountain.  I have also seen Casanova in the theater when it came out..   I never even heard of Two Hands, but I would love to watch it.   The others will all be good to watch too.  Monster Ball, The Patriot and any other one of Heath's film..  I must admit I am a little leery about watching Candy, and was at the time it came out.  But I will try to keep up with this thread for sure..

I have different favorite Heath films whether I'm in the mood for lighthearted or serious etc...I think you might really like CANDY, Dev.  It's a difficult subject for sure, but Heath is amazingly talented in it.  Of his 'serious' films, CANDY is second in my book.   MONSTER'S BALL comes in third only because he has such limited screen time - the time he's on film, though, is of course, phenomenal.

Here's an idea, if we want to switch movies...

A Knight's Tale will be shown on TBS this Sunday, at 1 pm and 11:45 pm. People could record it to watch next weekend.

Just a thought...

Okay, well it looks like 'Two Hands' is not very available at the moment, so we are offering up a more available (i.e. you can get it at Blockbuster) alternative:

A Knight's Tale, or Ten Things I Hate About You

I think Knight's Tale might be easier to source.

Shall we see how it goes?  I will check my Blockbuster for both and we can decide based upon majority rule.

Two Hands seems to be IS available in its entirety on YouTube in ten minute sections.  I didn't watch them to see if it's complete, but it looks like it is.  I just watched it.

Here's the link to the first one, you can use it to find the subsequent ones.  It was very watchable in this format, it's a good quality video, eight 10 minute sections, and then a ninth section that lasts 3 minutes.  I'm glad I saw it.

Should we stick with Two Hands after all?

He's not one of the leads so it would appear to be a secondary role.  If anyone's seen it, please let us know how much screen time he has.  In any event, it looks, like a pretty good movie.  I don't think I'll be buying PAWS though.  :D

I just finished it --- that was one strange little crime drama!

And it sure looks like Heath grew quite a bit height wise from 1999 onward. If they filmed it the previous year then he must have been 18 or 19 during filming.

I think it's an interesting little movie.  a little bit o' this, a little bit o' that.

Heath is very young, very earnest...  as usual, you just want to hug him, tell him everything will be okay, and of course, laugh with him a little bit, too.

Spoiler...

So what do you think the scene on the bus (?), after he escapes in the rain, is all about?  Realizing that his brother is dead?  That Panda's gang killed him?  Or, do you think he's more upset about his own life?

Well I just finished it.  I was about a half hour late starting. Couldn't log into the live chat for some reason.  Anyway, I forgot how good this movie is!  Funny and violent, tight script, topless Heath. He is just adorable in it and I liked the chemistry he had with Rose Byrne.  Oh and  her skinny brother is so damn sexy!  I wonder what became of him., the actor I mean, lol!

more random thoughts...

I was thinking during the movie that somehow maybe there was some foreshadowing for his role as the Joker?  bank robberies, violence, wielding guns...  etc.  The boxer scenes were also interesting - I don't tend to think of Heath as an athlete, but he was actually quite athletic... (jousting in Casanova, horse riding in many films, I imagine we will also see him doing quite athletic stunts in the Joker)

Ghost was 1990, so 9 years before this.

My DVD, unfortunately, had a lot of skips and scratches, so I felt like it was a disjointed viewing. I need to be totally focused on a movie and if I get distracted (for any reason), I have a hard time getting my attention back... (hm, this gives me more insight into my daughter's ADHD! Never thought of it that way).

That said, Heath was great but really seemed like a carbon copy (or dress rehearsal) of his acting in 10 Things I Hate About You, right down to the hairdo.

Black comedy is also not my best genre, either. Overall, I am glad I saw this but I would need to see it again to figure it all out...but I didn't like it enough to see it again. Oh well...

I think Jimmy as a character is a lot more fleshed out than Heath's character in 10 Things.  In 10 Things, it's all about getting the girl...  I think there is more to Jimmy than 'getting the girl'...

Let's just say, 'Rocket' caught my attention in the scene with Alex when he's only wearing a towel around his waist.  I almost fainted!   I guess I have a thing for wiry little psychos...

Considering that he's an actor, it was really hard finding a pic of him on the web:

Mathew Wilkinson was apparently in MI2 and GHOST RIDER.  He's also a rapper and writes and performs his own songs. His stage name is Montage  :-\

In my wanderings, I came upon these two stills from the movie:

Gil, I found them here:

Like Clarissa, I also liked Two Hands more than I thought I would.  I was just going to watch one of the YouTube videos Phillip posted just to see what Heath looked like but got engrossed in the story.  I did have a little trouble understanding the Australian accents in the beginning -- some of the slang went right over my head -- but it got easier as the story went on.

As for Jimmy's brother, I liked his monologue where he talked about good and bad.  That's one of the scenes I plan to watch again.

Did Heath only have a small role in this one?

Just finished watching BLACKROCK.  Not a bad film at all, sort of an Australian RIVER'S EDGE. --MILD SPOILERS AHEAD--  Jared, a surfer dude, witnesses his mates doing something horrible at a beachside rave and doesn't tell the police and is then haunted by it.  Things get more complicated for him when his best friend, the charismatic  Ricko, asks for his help.

Heath's role really is quite small, although he does have a few lines, ("You gulls wanna lift to the patty?") he plays Toby the brother of Jared's girlfriend, basically one of the mates (!).  He kind of turns out to be not such a nice guy.  He gets the sh!t kicked out of him at one point so you get to see him emote a little, he's pretty good.   The character of Jared's mother is well rounded, and her relationship with her son is refreshingly believable.  The Cranberries' Zombie is on the soundtrack, which was nice, I hadn't heard that in some time.

So much for the 2:00PM start time.  This idea is turning into a dud isn't it.
Anyway, loved the movie. I love that Ms Perky!  "Now scoot!"

well I don't think it is a dud, nobody is expected to watch the movie at exactly the same moment, but to share their experiences on each movie in turn.  We had never expected everyone would have the time to see it simultaneously, but to try to view it at some point during the weekend.

What do you mean, give up? I watched it at 2:00 as planned. (Someone should change the time on the banner btw). I had even spread the word to people on another forum, I hope they didn't show either because it would be embarrassing.  Last week I couldn't get in on the live chat because I guess there is limit to how many java things can be open.  Oh well, it's just not meant to be.

I just got finished.  What a cute film!  And to think I might not have watched it if Heath wasn't in it!

Did anyone else notice all the 'Ennisisms' in his interactions with Julia?  The narrowing eyes and turning away, and his facial expressions when they were arguing?  Holy mackerel, they made my heart jump!  It just goes to show that Heath was able to carry the intimacy and chemistry that he had with attractive female leads into his interaction with Jake on the screen, making the performance even more remarkable.

The idea always was that those who were able to...and wanted to watch in real time (using a baseline time of 2 pm EST) could, but that the designated movie could be watched throughout the weekend. Since I was getting on a plane at 2 pm today, I, unfortunately, had to defer my viewing to this evening.

But, I am still glad I watched this again! I liked it much better than the first time I saw it, which I think was a few months after seeing BBM. Then it seemed fun but sort of silly. This time, I just focused on Heath and saw all his little mannerisms and things I know (now) that would grow and mature.

And his smile...oh how I love his smile! And the way he kisses! Swooning here....

Okay folks, up next, Heath's breakout role in 'The Patriot' next Saturday.  If you folks would like to have an online chat session during or after the film, we can do that on our computers!  I wasn't sure people wanted to go for that but I would be glad to join chat for the film time.

In the car when he drove her home especially!  The way he said one line in that scene was pure Ennis.  Watching the movie again was very bittersweet.  I do seem to enjoy it more with each viewing though, such a cute and very witty film.  Apart from the mediocre soundtrack, it's aging quite well.  A few other thoughts:

1-  The scene with Kat & Patrick in the hay at the end of the paint-ball scene totally reminded me of Ennis & Alma at the end of the tobogganing scene in BbM.

2-  For such a serious & politically aware feminist, Kat's taste in music was rather shallow and top 40-ish wasn't it?  Cruel to be kind...?!

3-  Cameron's friend Michael looked strangely middle-aged for a highschool student I thought. (The way Jonah Hill did in Superbad.)    The actor actually looks younger (and way better) today, lol!

4-  This is total nitpicking but in the pedal boat scene Kat & Patrick are pedalling at different speeds and that's not possible with a single axle pedal boat. ;-)

5-  I just love Allison Janney!  "Now scoot!"

I'm certainly not giving up watching the designated films.  Just the 2:00PM thing.  It's an awkward time anyway, right in the middle of the afternoon, plus the last two Saturdays have been beautifully sunny which made it a shame to stay indoors.  I'll watch The Patriot next week for sure, even though it's my least favourite Heath performance in my second least favourite Heath film, the first being The Order/Sin Eater.  I'm not looking forward to watching that again, lol!

I have never seen The Patriot so I am looking forward to watching it for the first time. I have to say honestly, though, when Monster's Ball comes up on the schedule, I may skip watching that again. That one, for me, was definitely a "once is enough" movie and knowing what happens to Heath's character--I can't watch that right now.

I thought all the male characters were sort of uneven in the way they looked for their ages. Heath looked (and acted) a bit mature for a high school student...which was fine with me, since I thought he was as sexy as the day is long but if we are critiquing on the basis of realism...The female characters came off better, overall, age-wise, imho.

Well there has been a Heath film programmed here on tv once a week it seems. I don't know if it's deliberate or not. It's not always on the same channel.

Last week it was The Order, or The Sin Eater as it was called apparently. Because I didn't recognise the name, i completely missed it. My husband came across it while flipping channels. 'There's Ennis' he said!  ::)

I only watched a couple of minutes of it and i have to say it was pretty awful!

But next Saturday it's The Brothers Grimm. I've already seen that one and i quite liked it. I'll definitely record this one.

I'll try to get ahold of The Patriot. That one wasn't bad either. Heath was good in it.

I am planning to watch The Patriot sometime before Sunday morning (I have to go out of town Sun. and Mon.)... but I'm not exactly sure when.  I just wanted to share some thoughts on the movie before I watch it again.  I hope no one minds if I start discussing 'early.'

Mild spoilers....

I first saw this movie way before I was Heathen.  Overall, I thought it was a very good movie.  But I remember being shocked at how incredibly violent and horrific it was in parts.  Did anyone else feel this way?  Does anyone know if there is historical accuracy regarding what happened to the people in the church?

Benjamin Martin is loosely based on Francis "Swamp Fox" Marion -- SC militia leader who engaged in guerilla warfare. He and his men knew the terrain so well that it was hard to find them after their initial attack/ambush -- they'd disappear into the swamps or forests, etc.

The colonial militia knowing their own "lay of the land" is one reason given for the colonial victory over a much more well equipped British military. The French helped a lot too.  ;)

ok, I get it I think.  I don't really know what "dvr" stands for, but it is my hard drive that came with my DISH set up, so that is what I record to, and it saves to the hard drive.  I don't know what I will do when I move though.  Dont' know if there is a way to save what I have recorded on the dvr... or if I get to the keep the dvr as long as I stay with DISH network...  (Candy, the Patriot, Knight's Tale, Monster's Ball, Two Hands, Casanova, Lords of Dogtown are all on my dvr; I only have Brokeback and Four Feathers on dvd)

Thanks all of you who participated in the film and in the double-feature viewing of Brokeback afterward, as well as the simultaneous chat!

I found 'The Patriot' to be full of luscious shots of Heath at his adorable, long-haired best, and his performance reminds me a lot of 'Four Feathers', though I think 'Four Feathers' demanded a great deal more from him as the lead, in a much longer film.  But the film itself was a little too bloody for my taste, even though the cinematography was amazing.  Eminently watchable, but be prepared for some gore!

Well, well, there are no coincidences I guess. Right now, The Patriot is on a french tv channel. I've never heard Heath in French before.  :o He sounds terrible. He has such a great voice. I think voice overs are so weird. You can see the actor and you hear someone else's voice. Especially for a movie like BBM, the way Ennis sounds is such a big part of who he is.

I was hanging around after the Smarten Up Chat and intended to watch the Knight's Tale, but unfortunately my forum developed a glitch and I had to dash off and try and fix that, and spent most of the evening up to my neck in code  >:( When I eventually managed to sort it out though I ended up putting BBM on - probably a bit of a mistake before bedtime from the effect it had on me (bad dreams), but I will try and make it for the next film festival (and make sure I have my forum's co-admin on standby for any glitches!  :D )

Well, I didn't have time to watch yesterday either, but as I've said before, I like Four Feathers quite a bit - the epic style, the African sky, Heath's varied looks.  In fact it is probably the first movie where I really "fell" for Heath...  (I saw it long before I saw Brokeback Mountain.)
Title: Re: Heath Ledger Film Festival - Saturday Events

I read that the original cut of The Four Feathers was 3 hours long. It was due to come out shortly after 9/11 and there was speculation that it would be received poorly (terrorists in the desert and that sort of thing) so the director went back to the editing room and cut an hour out. I would like to see the extended cut because it seemed choppy in places and things were missing. For example, we never see Ethne give Heath/her fiance her white feather and I am sure that was filmed.

Title: Re: Heath Ledger Film Festival - Saturday Events

Next on the list is 'The Order' unless we want to go 'out of order' and see a more acclaimed film.  The one following that is 'Lords of Dogtown', if anyone has a preference.

I have to say I am somewhat astonished watching Ned Kelly - I always love watching Heath, and I think his performance in the film was good, but that has to be one of the most unrelentingly grim story plots I have seen, bar none!  So I will take suggestions on whether we want to see a very poorly ranked film, 'The ORder' (Rotten Tomatoes has it at an astonishing 7% compared ot 55% for Ned Kelly), or go on to 'Lords of Dogtown.'

I've been having my own mini film festival of late.  Watching some of Heath's previous movies in chronological order, to work up to the Dark Knight.

It is so interesting to see him so young in movies like Four Feathers...  The Order is next on my list (which I realize hardly anyone liked)... Then Brokeback (which I am excited to watch again, as I haven't watched it in since shortly after Heath's death)... I am also sort of doing this to work up to Candy.  Which I have had on my DVR for ages but haven't been able to bring myself to watch yet.  I really want it watched prior to the Dark Knight, however...

Just thought I'd share...

I have been doing the very same thing. Candy is a really harrowing film. There are some lighter moments but they are few. Heath's performance is incredible, IMO. He does not go OTT as a heroin addict,it is a slow inexorable slide.
It is also lovely to hear his own accent. It is nt however for the faint of heart.I had a couple of drinks to get me through it.Than very quickly watched AKT completely out of order, but just to introduce some levity.

Thanks for the advice...

I watched The Order today.  It was such an .......  odd (?) film.....  Really, I didn't think it was too bad until towards the end, and then I was sort of like "you've got to be kidding me" in terms of the plot...  I would have predicted a stronger response from Alex...

It was definitely an adult-Heath movie, not a young-Heath film.  And it was of course great seeing him and hearing his voice/narration briefly... So, in a sense, I really actually liked the movie.  And because of that, well, I did spend some time thinking about the film/plot, etc.  I am pretty sure, however, I would've hated it if it had been anyone other than Heath as Alex.  It is interesting to me that it had three actors from A Knight's Tale in it (Heath, Mark Addy, and Shannyn Sossamon) - not sure if by design or coincidence.
