Title: Music Music Music
Post by: CellarDweller on February 17, 2008, 04:54:09 pm
Hey y'all!

Decided to neaten up my blog a bit, so I'm copying the posts I've done with music videos  and polls here.  As of this date, any and all polls and discussions of music will happen here..

Looking forward to responses and feedback, so don't hold back!   Let me know what ones you like, and what ones you don't.

I'm not moving anyones comments from the original blog, so as to not interrupt any convos that took place, so if you've already commented on them there, don't feel pressured to move them here, they are fine where they are.

Today's video (I won't be doing a vid every day, only when the feeling strikes me) is dedicated to Truman (ShakesTheGround).

Before anyone goes reading too much into this.....     it's not because what the lyrics are saying.  When I was in SF, after the rodeo, there was a dance we all went to.  Tru and I were talking that we couldn't line dance, and not really good at two stepping.

The DJ started to play some fast country music, and we went out and tried our best to "boogie" to it (busted up knee and all  ) and it made me think of my "clubbing days" and the music I used to break out some moves to.

And in my mind, I can see Truman dancin' to this one, and having a blast, so Tru, this one's for you!  Hope ya like it.

Chuck, I finally checked your website out a few weeks ago.  I had no idea you're a freestyle fan!  Sweet!  I was a huge Trinere fan back in the day.  Saw her in concert & everything.

One of my favorite songs was/is "I Know You Love Me".  I think there's something about the beat of it or something that really gets to young womens' brains, because whenever it came on I & the other girls in my dorm would just flip out.  Such a sexy groove!

Hiya Laura!

I LOVE freestyle.  I've been going to concerts/shows for years, and have had the good fortune to get autographes and meet a lot of the acts backstage.

I've met:

Debbie Deb, Noel, George LaMond, Cover Girls, Sweet Sensation, Nyasia, Exposé, Clear Touch, 'Lil Suzy, Cynthia, Johnny O, Alisha, Lisette Melendez, and so many others.

Never met or have seen Trinere, but I have her double CD "Antholgy", and it's got "They're Playing Our Song", "How Can We Be Wrong", "I'll Be All You Ever Need", "All Night", and "I Know You Love Me" on it.

I'm thinking that every once and a while, I'll do a "original vs. remake" poll, and see which more people like.

here is the first one, and this will be funny, seeing that this a brokeback site, with many country song fans.  The first "battle" I've set up, is a very popular country song.

Just remember, this is not a "which video is better" or "which song is better" contest.  This is which version do you like more.

The first contestant:

Rascall Flatts - What Hurts The Most

This version of the song got to #1 on the country charts, and #46 on the Billboard Hot 100.

The second contestant:

Cascada - What Hurts The Most

European dance act Cascada scored a top 10 hit with "Everytime We Touch" and scored a big dance hit with "Miracle".  Her version of "What Hurts The Most" was released just weeks ago, and NYC radio is already starting to play it.

This next session is the battle of the girl groups!

The Supremes

Though Smokey Robinson & the Miracles had dealt with the subject of children born out of wedlock on an early, non-charting single titled "Bad Girl," the theme wouldn't prove to be successful until years later when Diana Ross & the Supremes would address the subject on "Love Child." Not only did it set some kind of precedent through its subject matter, it also was the group's first number one hit not written by the songwriting/production trio of Holland-Dozier-Holland.

The writers decided to forego any romantic themes in favor of a socially conscious story line.  "Love Child" settled at number two R&B for three weeks and number one pop for two weeks in the fall of 1968.

Sweet Sensation

From the years of 1985 to 1995, dance music was dominated by a genre called "freestyle".  Freestyle was a form of dance music that melded disco with latin sounds like merangue and salsa.  Numerous girl groups like The Cover Girls, Exposé, Company B. all put hit singles in the charts.  One of those girl groups was Sweet Sensation, who managed to get 6 hits on the charts, 4 of them in the Top 20.

With the amount of teen pregnancies on the rise in the late 80s and early 90s, Sweet Sensation expressed an interest of doing a remake of The Supreme's classic hit, "Love Child" in 1990.  It got to #6 on the dance single sales chart, and #14 on the Hot 100 chart.

And now, how about a new "remake" poll?  Here is our first contestant.

Canadian Gordon Lightfoot first began to gain recognition in the mid-'60s as a songwriter when his compositions "For Lovin' Me" and "Early Morning Rain" became hits for Peter, Paul & Mary, and Marty Robbins topped the country charts with "Ribbon of Darkness." Lightfoot's own style was understated, his tasteful folk arrangements topped by a gentle burr of a voice. His albums began to appear in 1966, but it was not until the start of the '70s that he became a big success as a performer, scoring in 1970 with Sit Down Young Stranger, which contained his hit "If You Could Read My Mind," a song with a typically flowing melodic line and gently poetic lyrics.

In 1971, "If You Could Read My Mind" got to #5 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Stars on 54 is a one shot group made up of dance stars Ultra Naté, Amber, and Jocelyn Enriquez. They were hired to perform a song on the soundtrack of the movie "54", all about the famous "Studio 54" disco that was the hangout/haunt of a number of celebrities during the days of disco.  The song opens with Ultra Naté, followed by Amber, finished up with Jocelyn Enriquez.

In 1998, their version of "If You Could Read My Mind" got to #3 on the dance singles charts, and #52 on the Billboard Hot 100.

So, which version do you like?

Well, it's time for another "Which Do You Like" comparison.

This time, it's two different versions, but the same style of music.

Wish ft. Fonda Rae - "Touch Me (All Night Long)"

In 1984, studio group Wish released the dance single "Touch Me (All Night Long)".  It was also selected to be on the soundtrack of and in the movie "Nightmare On Elm Street 2".  The song got major play in the clubs, and while it didn't cross over to the pop charts, it got to #5 on the Billboard Dance Music chart.  No video was ever made, but I did find a slideshow of images of the featured vocalist, Fonda Rae, set to the music.

Cathy Dennis - "Touch Me (All Night Long)"

Cathy Dennis also started her career as a featured vocalist, in the studio group "D-Mob".  Together they scored the hits "C'mon & Get My Love" and "That's The Way Of The World".  She went solo soon after, and recorded her debut cd, "Move To This".  The second single was Cathy's version of the Wish song.  However, there was some confusion with the title.  On the single, the song is called "Touch Me (All Night Long)", but on the CD it's called "All Night Long (Touch Me)".  Cathy also rewrote the lyrics to the song, but kept the chorus the same.  Her single crossed over to the Billboard Hot 100, where it reached #2.

So which do you like better, Wish ft. Fonda Rae, or Cathy Dennis?

I did want toget back to my routine somewhat, so i'm restarting the "Which version is better?" poll today.

With our last poll, for the first time, the remake beat the original, with Cathy Denis beating the Wish ft Fonda Rae version by 1 vote.

Although, I know which versioin will win this poll......

In 1955, Elvis began is never ending reign as the King of Rock & Roll.  He sold millions of singles and albums, sold out concerts and movie theaters, and performed until the time of his death.

In 1962, Elvis got to #2 on the Billboad Hot 100 with his song "Can't Help Fallin' In Love".

For a ten year stretch (1983 - 1993)  English reggae band UB40 collected a string of hits in the US, mainly reggae versions of popular songs.  In 1990, UB40 remade the Elvis tune in their own style, and it not only appeared on their own CD, but on the soundtrack for the movie "Sliver", staring Sharon Stone.

Their version charted better than Elvis' original, getting to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1993.

Now, on to the new poll.  Our last one ended in a tie, the first time ever, between UB40 & Elvis Presley.

This vote will be different today.  The song is recorded by two different acts, in the same year.   They are the same style, essentially, but they are slightly different musically, and the vocals are definitely different.

It was in 1983 that 14-year old Kensit became lead singer of brother Jamie Kensit's fledgling band, Spice. Rounding out the original lineup were guitarist Geoff Beauchamp, bassist Lawrence Lewis, drummer Jake Walters, and a friend named Nigel providing additional percussion. By late 1984, Kensit was contributing more to the band's music and they had changed their name to Eighth Wonder.  Signing to CBS in early 1986, they worked on a debut album, Fearless.  Fearless had been completed and released in July of 1987, Eighth Wonder had issued a string of singles that had found success across Europe. Fearless sold well in the U.K. and the group (now a quartet) even notched minor chart singles ("Cross My Heart" and "Baby Baby") in the U.S.

Here is Eighth Wonder's version of "Cross My Heart".

Martika appeared after teen girls like Tiffany and Debbie Gibson returned adolescent bubblegum to the pop charts. Martika was born as Marta Marrero in Whittier, CA, on May 18, 1969. Her parents were originally from Cuba; however, they left the country during a revolution. Raised in California, Martika started acting before launching a recording career, appearing in the film version of Annie in 1982 and on the TV series Kids Incorporated from 1984 to 1986. In 1988, her first single, "More Than You Know," landed on the American charts; a year later, its follow-up, "Toy Soldiers," was number one in the U.S. for two weeks. Martika's self-titled debut album was also released in 1989.

Here is Martika's version of "Cross My Heart".  No vid was made, this is a fan vid of the record on the turntable.

So, which do you prefer?  Martika's more "mature" sounding vocals and production, or Eighth Wonder's "sugary" bubble gum production?

Here is the latest version of "Which Do You Like Better"?

One of the most gifted, visionary, and enduring talents ever launched into orbit by the Motown hit machine, Marvin Gaye blazed the trail for the continued evolution of popular black music.  After graduating from high school, Gaye enlisted in the U.S. Air Force; upon his discharge, he returned to Washington and began singing in a number of street-corner doo wop groups.  While first working at Motown as a session drummer and playing on early hits by Smokey Robinson & the Miracles, he met Gordy's sister Anna, and married her in late 1961. Upon mounting a solo career, Gaye struggled to find his voice, and early singles failed. Finally, his fourth effort, "Stubborn Kind of Fellow," became a minor hit in 1962, and his next two singles — the 1963 dance efforts "Hitch Hike" and "Can I Get a Witness" — both reached the Top 30.   In 1976, his song "I Want You" got to #1 on the R&B chart, and #15 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Madonna moved from her native Michigan to New York in 1977, with dreams of becoming a ballet dancer. She studied with choreographer Alvin Ailey and modeled. In 1979, she became part of the Patrick Hernandez Revue, a disco outfit that had the hit "Born to Be Alive." She traveled to Paris with Hernandez; it was there that she met Dan Gilroy, who would soon become her boyfriend. Upon returning to New York, the pair formed the Breakfast Club, a pop/dance group.  A demo tape worked its way to Mark Kamins, a New York-based DJ/producer. Kamins directed the tape to Sire Records, which signed the singer in 1982.

Kamins produced Madonna's first single, "Everybody," which became a club and dance hit at the end of 1982; her second single, 1983's "Physical Attraction," was another club hit. In June of 1983, she had her third club hit with the bubbly "Holiday," which was written by Jellybean Benitez. Madonna's self-titled debut album was released in September of 1983; "Holiday" became her first Top 40 hit the following month. "Borderline" became her first Top Ten hit in March of 1984, beginning a remarkable string of 17 consecutive Top Ten hits.

After the scandal of Madonna's book (Sex) and matching album (Erotica), Madonna released an album of ballads/love songs.  Although never released as a single, a video was made for Madonna's version of the Marvin Gaye classic "I Want You".

I'm not reading anybody else's comments until I vote!   ;D

This was a tough one.  They're both good.  But after listening to Marvin Gaye again, I prefer that version because of the rhythm.  The background accompaniment is better matched to the voice.  Whereas Madonna has a very soft voice with a loud bass accompaniment.

I know, I probably lost the vote.  Don't be too mad, Chuck -- I liked Madonna's singing, too.   :)

Yes, among Marvin Gaye songs, this was not my favorite (or maybe it was the video).  Heard it thru the Grapevine is much catchier.

I voted for Madonna's version although I was not highly impressed by either one. The song sounds rather boring by both acts and what is strange is that neither Madonna or Marvin Gaye typically recorded songs which I would find boring. The vocals, in my opinion, are also much weaker than typical Madonna or Marvin Gaye.

Well, I was quite surprised to see that Madonna beat Marvin Gaye with her version of "I Want You".

Here is the next poll to vote on, and it's quite a difference!

First up is the song "Enter Sandman" by heavy metal band Metallica.

Next up, is "Enter Sandman" by Iron Horse, a bluegrass band.

There is no video to this song, so it's the "Iron Horse" logo that shows while the song plays.

Remember, this is not "which video is better", as there  is no video for the Iron Horse version.  It's which version of the song do you like, the heavy metal one, or the bluegrass one.
Title: Re: Music Music Music
Post by: dejavu on March 17, 2008, 09:26:43 pm
Definitely Iron Horse.  I don't listen to bluegrass that often, but that was really good.   :D

I don't normally listen to heavy metal and didn't expect to like Metallica, but actually, it reminded me of a lot of hard rock we used to listen to from the 1970s.   ;D  It wasn't bad.  But I still liked Iron Horse much better.

I voted for Metallica's version of "Enter Sandman." I am not a big Metallica fan, but I found their version to be MUCH better. This was one of a few Metallica songs I liked anyway. I found Iron Horse's version to be horrible. I find them to be a horrible bluegrass band in general if this is representative of their music. They just don't play bluegrass music the way I have heard it before and I live in bluegrass country. There are other bands who are playing bluegrass music the way Iron Horse does, but to me that is not true bluegrass music. If you want to hear true bluegrass music listen to Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs or The Dillards. That is the real thing.

Jack, my friend who liked the Iron Horse version does come originally from western Pennsylvania countryside (near West Virginia), but that may not be as much "bluegrass" territory as where you live.

It could be that I am being a little difficult on the song. I think it actually is called alternative bluegrass. I work with someone whose husband plays in a band like this, but Iron Horse is better. The only thing I seem to hear from the band I am mentioning is moaning with some really lousy music behind the moaning. Here is what I call true bluegrass which I like ok now, but when I was growing up I hated it. I even had relatives that used to come up to my grandmother's from Punkintown, South Carolina and play this kind of bluegrass when I was real little.

That was pretty good, Jack, and I understand the difference you are talking about with "alternative bluegrass."

I think I would have hated the true bluegrass style, too, when I was younger, but I can appreciate it now.  Good musicians.

Oh, I just got through listening to Part 1, "Touch My Body."  That was a good song.

I thought you were going to do a poll here.  You're just dethroning Elvis!   ;D

Well, it appears that the last contest ended in a tie between metal band Metallica, and bluegrass band Iron Horse.

So, on to our next poll.

In the past, the songs have been a successful original, with a successful remake.  This time, it's a little different, as the original version really was not well known, but the remake was a huge hit.

Cherelle - "I Didn't Mean To Turn You On"

Born Cheryl Week Norton in 1958 in Los Angeles, CA, her cousin is singer Pebbles. When her family moved to Detroit, MI, she met bassist/singer Michael Henderson.  In 1977, Henderson was recording his gold album In the Night-Time and invited Cheryl to the studio. She come there in the evenings after she'd finished working at the bank. She became Cherrelle because her boss would be stressed because she was always late for work. She'd yell, "Cher—-relle, you're late!"

Cherrelle went on tour with Michael Henderson and Luther Vandross. Later, she recorded a demo that came to the attention of Tabu Records owner Clarence Avant. Her attorney father negotiated the recording contract with Avant's label that was distributed by A&M Records. Teamed with producers/songwriters Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, who had hits with Tabu recording act the S.O.S. Band, Cherrelle began to have a steady stream of hits.  Her debut song, "I Didn't Mean to Turn You On", got to #6 on the dance charts, and Cherelle went on to score a number of R&B hits, as well as cross over to the pop charts with the single "Saturday Love," a duet with labelmate Alexander O' Neal.

Robert Palmer- "I Didn't Mean To Turn You On"

The career of blue-eyed soul singer Robert Palmer was a study in style versus substance. While the performer's earliest work won praise for its skillful assimilation of rock, R&B, and reggae sounds, his records typically sold poorly, and he achieved his greatest notoriety as an impeccably dressed lounge lizard. By the mid-'80s, however, Palmer became a star, although his popularity owed less to the strength of his material than to his infamous music videos: taking their cue from the singer's suave presence, Palmer's clips established him as a dapper, suit-and-tie lady's man who performed his songs backed by a band comprised of leggy models, much to the delight of viewers who made him one of MTV's biggest success stories.

Palmer recorded the 1985 solo album Riptide, a sleek collection of guitar rock which scored a number one hit with "Addicted to Love," the first in a string of videos which offered him in front of a bevy of beautiful women.

The follow-up,  a remake of Cherelles' "I Didn't Mean to Turn You On," continued to play with the sex symbol image and climbed up the dance charts, and had a bigger success than Cherelle's original by hitting number two on the Bilboard Hot 100 pop chart.

So, which version of the song do you like better?   Cherelle's dance/R&B original, or Robert Palmer's remake?
Title: Re: Music Music Music

I voted for Cherelle.  She just seemed happier singing her version, and the song seemed more upbeat.

I had a hard time making out the lyrics in Robert Palmer's version, although that could be this particular recording.

I truly thought I would be voting for Cherelle and it was close, but I ended up voting for Robert Palmer. I was never a huge fan of Robert Palmer, but this song if I'm not mistaken was being played during the early part through a good part of the summer of 1986. That song, though I had pretty much forgotten about it, was part of a group of songs that I think I recorded on I don't know how many tapes. That was one of those years that was life changing for me and it brings back many, many pleasant memories. The year didn't end good although I wasn't aware of it at the time. I actually did like his other big song "Addicted to Love" a lot until I heard it for the one millionth time.

Today, I'm givng you all an 80s music lesson.

Why?  The reason will be posted on the last post of this series, which will have two videos per post.

The subject?  The 80's answer to The Supremes,  girl group Exposé.

In the mid 80s, freestyle was just beginning to gain popularity, and producer Lewis A. Martinée had two songs written in this style, and had put together three ladies in a group, originally called "X-Posed".

The name was later changed to Exposé, and the three ladies, Alé  (pronounced Al ay), Laurie, and Sandée (pronounced San day) went to the recording studio

The demo was given to Arista records, who signed the group to an album deal.  The first single "Point Of No Return" was released to clubs and dance radio stations, and became a huge hit in dance clubs, and on dance radio stations.

Exposé recorded the follow up single "Exposed to Love" to equal success.

Lewis Martinée had the material for the full length CD ready to go, when the group split apart.  Finding himself with a recording contract, and no group, he decided to reform Exposé with three new members.

After some auditions, Lewis Martiné found Jeanette Jurado, Ann Curless, and Gioia Bruno to be the "new" Exposé.  They went into the studio, and finished recording the CD, as well as re-recording the single "Point Of No Return".  The debut disc was called "Exposure".

The group's next single was "Come Go With Me", lead vocal by Jeanette, and like the prior singles, a freestyle/dance driven song.  However, this time, pop radio picked up on the single, and it shot up the Billboard Hot 100.  Arista Records quickly shot a video for the song, and it ended up being a Top 5 hit.

Wanting to strike while the iron was hot, Arista Records, instead of releasing a new single, re-released "Point Of No Return", which now had the vocals of the new members.  A video was shot, and Exposé got a 2nd Top 10 hit.

The record company was not ready to slow the succes of Exposé, but they did slow down the pace of the next two singles.  Wanting to show Exposé was more than just freestyle, they released the group's 3rd single, "Let Me Be The One", this time, lead vocals by Gioia.  This mid tempo jam got to #7 on the charts, becoming their 3rd Top 10 Hit.

Continuing to slow the pace a bit, Exposé released their love ballad, "Seasons Change", with Jeanette back on lead.  It became their first #1 single.  By now, the "Exposure" CD sold 2 million copies.

In 1989, Exposé released their follow up CD, "What You Don't Know".

Wanting to avoid the "sophmore slump", they stuck to the formula that made the "Exposure" CD a success, dance songs, and some love ballads.  The first single was the title track, "What You Don't Know" with Gioia on lead, and it was another Top 10 Hit.

The next single to be released was "When I Looked At Him", with Jeanette on lead, it became their 6th Top 10 hit.

Bringing the tempo back up, Exposé released "Tell Me Why" (lead vocal by Gioia), with a message against violence.

The last single to be released from "What You Don't Know" was "Your Baby Never Looked Good In Blue".  With Jeanette on lead, this single got to #17 on the Hot 100, and was the first Exposé single not to hit the Top 10.

Final sales figures for "What You Don't Know" were between 1 and 2 million.  Before Exposé could start their 3rd CD, Gioia's doctor found a cyst on her vocal cords.  She was unble to sing, and surgery to remove it would affect her voice.  Gioia left Exposé, and was replaced with Kelly Moneymaker.  At this point in time, the ladies also decided to break away from Lewis Martinée, in an effort to work with other producers, as the "freestyle" sound was losing popularity.

1992 saw the release of the 3rd Exposé Cd, simply called "Exposé.

Changing sounds from the freestyle that gave them success turned out to be a bad idea.  The R&B lead single "I Wish The Phone Would Ring" (lead vocals by Jeanette), managed to only get to #28 on the Hot 100 chart, a disappoinment compared to past single success.

Hoping to get a hit, Arista released "I'll Never Get Over You" a love ballad which featured Jeanette on lead.  This single managed to get to #8 on the Hot 100, giving Exposé their 8th Top 10 single.

Hoping to follow up the success of their last Top 10 hit, Arista records released a second love ballad from the "Exposé" Cd, a song called "As Long As I Can Dream", which featured Ann on lead vocals this time.  However, after hearing a love ballad from them previously, pop radio overlooked this sweet song, and it only got to #56 on the charts.

Realizing that their hit streak had basically come to an end, Ann, Jeanette, and Kelly decided to go their seperate ways.  In 1995, Arista Records released a "Greatest Hits" Cd, which featured all their Top 10 hits, as well as two final new songs.  A remake of the disco song "I Specialize In Love" (which wasn't released as a single) and the love ballad "I'll Say Goodbye For The Two Of Us".  However, this single failed to chart at all, and Exposé dropped off from the music scene.

In early 2001, Gioia found that the cyst on her vocal cords disolved without surgery.  She recorded a solo CD called "Expose This", but didn't find success.

Fast forward to recent years.  Ann, Jeanette, and Gioia have reconnected, pooled their money together, and purchased the rights to the name Exposé.  Riding the "80s revival" that's going on, they've hit the road, and have been doing live shows again, including a number of gay pride events.  Here is a recent publicity pic.

Why am I posting all this?  Well, a friend of mine is one of their road managers, and their next date is tomorrow, in Long Island.  If all goes well, I'll be at the concert, and hopefully, backstage to meet and get pics with Exposé!

Ok, after a long absence from my blog, the "Which One Is Better" poll has returned.

This week, we'll be comparing the song "Sweet Heart".

"Sweet Heart" was originally recorded by Rainy Davis in 1987.  The song got into the Top 10 on the dance charts, and crossed over to the Top 50 on the Hot 100.

Rainy's debut CD (also called Sweet Heart) was released in '87 as well, and also included the R & B hit "Lowdown So & So".

Here is Rainy Davis' version of "Sweet Heart".

*note, an official video was never made, this is just the record sleeve and pics of Rainy while the song plays*

In 1998, Mariah Carey released the hits package "#1s", a collection of her number one hits.  It also included three new songs.  One of them was a remake of the Rainy Davis song, "Sweet Heart", which she said was a favorite 80s jam of hers.

It wasn't released as a single, however, the video got a lot of airplay on MTV and VH-1.

Here is Mariah's version of "Sweet Heart".

Kim Sozzi is a NYC native who's been recording dance music for years.

She's finally been given an album deal, and the full length debut CD (titled Just One Day) was released two weeks ago.

Her record company just released the video of the single "Feel Your Love".

Do you think it's hot, or not?

I've decided to use this space to give a quick history lesson on Madonna's music.

She's just released her double Greatest Hits CD, "Celebration", and since I listed her as one of the 5 people I'd invite to a dinner party, why not?  I'll add a new post each day, until I reach her recent CD.

;D

Madonna (born Madonna Louise Ciccone on August 16, 1958) is an American recording artist, actress and entrepreneur.  She was born in Bay City, Michigan, and raised in Rochester Hills.  She became a rebel as a child, after her mother (also named Madonna) died of breast cancer when Madonna was six.  As a young adult, she moved to New York City in 1977, for a career in modern dance. After performing as a member of the pop musical groups Breakfast Club and Emmy, she landed a recording deal with Sire Records, and released her debut single, "Everybody" in early 1983.

While not a pop success, "Everybody" became a huge dance/club hit, and was followed by "Physical Attraction" and "Burning Up".  After 3 dance hits, Sire released Madonna's debut album, simply called "Madonna".

2 more singles were released, "Holiday" and "Borderline", which got to #16 and #10 on the pop charts.  At this time, Madonna was ready to release her 2nd album.  However, a video for the song "Lucky Star" was leaked to MTV, and the station put it on heavy rotation.  This caused the release date for the next album to be pushed back, and "Lucky Star" pushed Madonna to stardom, helping create her image, and becoming Madonna's highest charting single from the album, getting to #5 on the pop charts.

*Trivia note*   The young man dancing in the video is Madonna's younger brother, Christopher.

With the success of "Lucky Star", Madonna's debut album (Madonna) went on to sell 3 million copies, and hit the Top 10 on the album chart.

As the single "Lucky Star" started to drop down the chart, Madonna released her follow up album, titled "Like A Virgin".

The lead off single was the title track.  The song "Like A Virgin" went on to spend 6 weeks at #1 on the Hot 100 Singles chart.  The album of the same name spent 3 weeks at #1, and sold 10 million copies in the US.  Images of Madonna and her "Boy Toy" belt buckle were all over TV and in magazines.

Three more singles went on to become Top 10 hits from the "Virgin" album.  "Material Girl", "Angel" and "Dress You Up".

At this time, Madonna started her first tour, called "The Virgin Tour" and her performance of "Dress You Up" became the video for the single.

After her successful "Virgin Tour", Madonna went back into the studio to record her 3rd CD, "True Blue".

It revealed a "new" Madonna, lighter hair, slimmer, and she lost the bows, belt buckle, and jewelery.

The first look at this Madonna was the CDs lead off single, "Live To Tell".

5 singles were released, and all of them hit the Top 5 of the Billboard Hot 100, three of them getting to the #1 position.  The album went on to hit #1 on the Top 200 Album charts, and sold 7 million copies in the US.

The most controversial video from the album was the second single, "Papa Don't Preach", which was about pregnant teenaged girl, telling her father she wanted to keep her baby.

1987 saw the release of the Madonna film "Who's That Girl?".  The movie was a flop.  However, the soundtrack was a hit.

The soundtrack was not a full length Madonna CD, however, it did include 4 new Madonna songs.  The title song "Who's That Girl" got to #1 on the Hot 100, and the follow up, "Causing A Commotion" got to #2.  The soundtrack sold 2 million copies, and also helped launch the "Who's That Girl" wolrd tour, which was a huge success.

The video for "Causin' A Commotion" was filmed at her Italian stop of the Who's That Girl" Tour.

After 3 successful albums, and a hit soundtrack, it was time for new product.

However, Madonna was out on tour, and not in the studio making new music.  What to do?  Release a compilation.

Released in late 1987, "You Can Dance" was a remix album....featuring newer remixes of classic Madonna hits, mostly from her first album.  However, the album included "Into The Groove", which was available before only on the "Desperately Seeking Susan" soundtrack, and an older song that was never included on any Madonna album, "Spotlight".

Although not officially released as a single, "Spotlight" got major airplay on radio stations, and pushed "You Can Dance" up into the Top 10 of the Billboard Top 200.

After her "Who's That Girl" tour, Madonna went back into the studio to record music that was very reflective on what she was going through.  She was divorcing Sean Penn, and it was coming out in her music.

1989 saw the release of her album, "Like a Prayer".

The first single from the album was the title track, and it was surrounded by controversy.  Including religous imagery (including Madonna kissing a statue of a  black saint come to life, showing the stigmata, and burning crosses) the video was a big attention getter, and became Madonna's next #1 single.  The album went on to hit #1 as well.

Express Yourself, Keep It Together, Cherrish, and Oh Father all became hit singles, the first three getting into the Top 10, and "Oh Father" getting to the top 20.

1990 saw Madonna in the theaters and on the charts with "Dick Tracy".  She played the character Breathless Mahoney and named her next CD "I'm Breathless".  Along the bottom of the CD it says "Music From and Inspired By the Moive 'Dick Tracy".

The CD got to #2 on the Billboard Top 200, and two singles were released.  "Hanky Panky" got to #10, and "Vogue" to #1 on the Hot 100 chart.  Trivia note, Madonna was not fond of the song "Vogue" and planned it as a B-side of another song.  Her record company convinced her otherwise.

At the end of 1990, Madonna released her first greatest hits collection, titled "The Immaculate Collection".

It contained 15 greatest hits, as well as two new tracks.  One of the hit singles (Crazy For You) had not ever appeared on a Madonna CD, as it was on the soundtrack to the movie "VisionQuest".

The two new songs were "Justify My Love" and "Rescue Me".   Both spoken words with music, the singles were released not long after the CD.  Justify My Love had a very (for the time) racy and explict video that was banned by MTV, only airing late at night.

The Immaculate Collection got to #2 on the Billboard Top 200 album chart.  "Justify My Love" got to #1 on the Hot 100, and "Rescue Me" got to #10.

I was unable to find a version of the official music video that I can embed here.  There is one on YouTube that won't embed, and here's the link.  Just remember that it contains "mature" themes and would not be considered work safe.

In 1992 Madonna released her next CD.  After the video "Justify My Love", she decided to delve more into sexual exploration and released the coffee table book "Sex".  She went on tour "Girlie Show" and released the CD "Erotica".

Many felt that the explict songs and videos were now overshadowing Madonna's talent.  Once again, Madonna's video (this time Erotica) was banned from MTV, only getting late night airings.

Erotica (the CD) got to #2 on the Billboard Top 200 charts.  Three songs were released as singles.  "Erotica" got to #3, "Deeper & Deeper" got to # 7 and "Rain" got to #14 on the Hot 100 chart.

*please note - i've embeded the official video for "Erotica" here.  It is not safe for work.*

After the success (and backlash) of "Erotica", Madonna elected to release a CD that showcased a bit of a softer side.

Her next CD, "Bedtime Stories" used blues samples and scored two big hits.  The CD got to #3 on the Billboard Top 200.  The first single, "Secret" hit #7, and "Take A Bow" got Madonna back to #1.

Perhaps still feeling a bit of backlash from her "Erotica" opus, Madonna continued to work on softening her image.  She decided to release a second greatest hits cd, but with a different angle this time.

In 1995, Madonna released a collection called "Something To Rembember".  This CD contained no dance hits.  It was a collection of all of Madonna's ballads/love songs.  This collection had new songs, as well as 2 previously released hits from movies, "I'll Remember" from 'With Honors', and "This Used To Be My Playground" from 'A League Of Their Own'.   The new single was "You'll See", and the video was done as a sequal to "Take A Bow".

"Something To Remember" got to #6 on the Billboard Topp 200.  The new single "You'll See" got to #6 on the Top 100.  Previously released track "Playground" got to #1 when previously released, and "I'll Remember" got to #2 when previously released.

In 1998, Madonna had just had a hit with "Don't Cry For Me Argentina", and the Evita movie.  She was also expecting her first baby, abut to turn 40, and Madonna wanted to go into a different musical direction.

Madonna worked with new producers, and came up with "Ray Of Light".  The CD was a critical and commerical success.  No only did it get back to the (near) top of the Billboard charts (her prior CD got to #6), but it earned Madonna a handful of Grammy awards (Best Music Video, Best Dance Recording, and Best Pop Vocal Album).

The CD "Ray Of Light" got to #2 on the Top 200 chart.  "Frozen" got to #2.  The single "Ray Of Light" got to #5, and the last single "Power Of Good-bye" hit #10.

The year 2000 came, and gave us a new Madonna CD.

After the success of "Ray Of Light", Madonna was ready to continue the hit streak.  She released "Music" to more commercial and critical acclaim.  The CD "Music" hit #1 on the Billboard Top 200, and the single of the same name also hit #1.  It was the first time that Madonna had managed that feat since 1989, when she did it with the "Like A Prayer" single and CD.  "Don't Tell Me" was also released as a single, and it hit #4 on the Billboard Hot 100.

After the success of "Music" in 2000, Madonna decided to release another greatest hits collection, focusing on her 90s hits (The Immaculate Collection was her 80s hits).

So in 2001 Madonna released GHV2  (Greatest Hits Volume 2).

Unlike Madonna's prior hits collections, this CD had no new songs on it.  However, it did have to previously released tracks, that were on soundtracks and ever on any Madonna CD before.

Those two tracks were "Don't Cry For Me Argentina" (from Evita) which had hit #8 on the Hot 100, and "Beautiful Stranger" (From Austin Powers) which got to #19 on the Hot 100.

GHV2 got to #7 on the Billboard Top 200 chart.

Madonna's next CD was released in 2003, and began what seemed to be a slide downhill for her career.

2003 gave us "American Life".   The CD seemed to be off to a good start by hitting #1 on the Billboard Top 200 chart.  The first single was from the James Bond soundtrack, "Die Another Day".  This song got to #8 on the Hot 100 singles chart.

However, things went downhill from there.  The CD was quick to drop from the charts, and the follow up single "American Life", only got to #37 on the Hot 100.  Two more singles were released, and failed to hit the Hot 100 at all.

It was still 2003, and Madonna felt that perhaps the music on "American Life" was pushed aside too quickly, so she took a gamble, and released a remix CD, similarly to "You Can Dance" back in the 80s.

"Remixed & Revisted" featured songs from "American Life" in remixes that were supposed to give the music new life.  It was a mistake.  The CD never got higher than #115 on the Billboard Hot 200, Madonna's worst charting CD ever, and any songs that were given to radio received little to no airplay, and never charted.

After a two year absence from the music scene, Madonna knew she needed a comeback, and she prepared the release of her newest CD.

2005 gave us "Confessions On A Dancefloor".  Madonna previewed the CD with a single first to build up interest.  Going back to the 70s for samples, Madonna released the first single "Hung Up" which samples ABBA's song "Gimme Gimmie Gimme".

The single "Hung Up" got massive amounts of airplay, and it got Madonna back into the Top 10, getting to #7 on the Hot 100 chart.  "Confessions was a success as well, getting to #1 on the Billboard Top 200 chart.

The second single "Sorry" (containing a sample of "Can You Feel It by the Jacksons) was not a big pop hit (#57) but was a fan favorite and a huge hit on the dance charts and in the clubs.

The CD's lead single was "4 Mintues", a collaboration with Justin Timberlake and Timberland.  It was a massive hit, and got to #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

A second single, "Give It 2 Me" got to #57 on the Hot 100 chart.

Today I've decided to share pics of the autographed CD collection I have.

;D

The artists are all performers of Freestyle music.

Freestyle is a genre of music that was very popular from the mid 80s to the mid 90s.  Take the Latin sounds of salsa and merengue and mix a little dance/pop into it, and you have freestye.

Where I can, I will give chart statistics and information on the artists, and post YouTube links to samples of the music, so you can listen to them, if you choose to.  When I can, I will post footage of the artists performing, or their videos.

This first artist helped dance music in a BIG way!

The year is 1983, and freestyle was about to break out into the national stage.

Shannon releases her debut CD, "Let The Music Play", and the first song released is the title track.  The song became known as "electro-funk" and went to #8 on the Hot 100 singles chart.  It's considered the first song to break open the door to dance themed music on radio again, after the "death" of disco in 1980.

A second single from the CD was released, called "Give Me Tonight".  While not as successful as "Let The Music Play", this song did get play on pop radio, and kept dance music on the airwaves.

In 1985 Shannon released her second CD, "Do You Wanna Get Away".

The first single was the title track, and much like "Give Me Tonight", didn't hit the Top 40, but kept dance music on the radio airwaves, and hit the top of the dance charts.

The follow up single, "Stronger Together", also hit the dance charts.  After this, Shannon didn't release new music for years.

In 2002 Shannon released the CD "The Best Is Yet To Come".  The CD contains remixes of some of her hits, as well as new material.

Shannon still performs at shows.

Shannon kicked the door open in 1983, and another act walked through.

1985 saw the release of the CD "Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam with Full Force".  The story was that Full Force (producers) had a song and two musicians (Cult Jam) and were looking for a young female singer.  Into the auditions walked Lisa Valez.  Renamed "Lisa Lisa", her voice was deemed perfect for their song, which was to be an anthem for young women who were resisting their boyfriends advances.

The song was titled "I Wonder If I Take You Home", and was more Latin sounding than Shannon's records.  The song went to the top of the dance charts and got heavy pop radio airplay, and it hit #34 on the pop charts.

The follow up single "Can You Feel The Beat" hit the top of the dance charts, but didn't do well on the pop charts.  However, the CD had one more single released, the love ballad "All Cried Out", which became a big hit, and got to #8 on the pop charts.

With freestyle acts hitting the Top 40 now, Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam released their second CD in 1987, "Spanish Fly".

This CD was more successful than its predecessor, with the first two songs, "Head To Toe" and "Lost In Emotion" both hitting #1 on the Hot 100 pop chart.

1989 saw the release of Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam's third CD "Straight To The Sky".  However, the act's streak was starting to faulter.

The lead off single was "Little Jackie Wants To Be A Star" and while it did well on the dance and R&B charts, it only got to #29 on the Hot 100 pop chart.

The second song released "Just Git It Together", got near to the top of the R&B and dance charts, but it failed to hit the Hot 100 chart.

1991 saw the release of "Straight Outta Hell's Kitchen", the 4th Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam CD.

Only one single "Let The Beat Hit 'em" saw any success.  It hit the top of the R&B and Dance charts.  When it got to the Hot 100, it was only able to get to #37.

Not long after this CD, Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam disbanded.  Lisa Lisa went on to record some solo material, act on TV, and still does shows as a solo act, singing all the Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam tunes.

After the initial successes of Shannon and Lisa Lisa, the stage was set for the first "true" freestyle song, and all in the industry say that this record was recorded by Nayobe.

Nayobe was a young Cuban who was discovered at a talent contest, and she was signed to Fever Records in 1987.  Her first single was "Please Don't Go".

Dealing with gang violence, "Please Don't Go" tells of a young girl asking her boyfriend not to go to a gang fight that night.  The song became a huge dance hit.

Her debut CD was released, and two more singles "Good Things Come To Those Who Wait" and "Second Chance For Love" also became big dance hits.

In 1990, Nayobe changed direction, and released the CD "Promise Me", which was more R&B leaning than dance/freestyle.  She then recorded some salsa music.

Nayobe still performs at shows, and is considered the "godmother" of freestyle.

Origianlly called "X-posed", this group was formed by produced Lewis Martinee. The group was made up of Alé Lorenzo, Sandée Tolla and Laurie Miller. After two singles, this group split up.

Lewis Martinee had a CD's worth of music ready, so he reformed Exposé with Gioia Bruno, Jeanette Jurado, and Ann Curless.

Exposé released 2 CDs, and scored 7 Billboard Top 10 hits, and sold approximately 2 million CDs. Their hits were:

"Come Go With Me", "Point Of No Return", "Let Me Be The One", "Seasons Change", "What You Don't Know", "When I Looked At Him", "Tell Me Why"

At this point, Gioia left the group, due to a cyst on her vocal cords, and was replaced with Kelly Moneymaker. This version of Exposé released one more CD and got one more Top 10 hit, "I'll Never Get Over You Getting Over Me". Exposé released a Greatest Hits CD, and split up.

Gioia later learned that her cyst had disolved, and rejoined Exposé. The women recently won a lawsuit to the rights of the name "Exposé" and have been performing agian.

Signed to Next Plateau records, lead Betty LeBron (also known as Betty Dee), and sisters Margie and Mari Hernandez formed Sweet Tempation. Just as they were to release their first single, they received word they couldn't use that name, due to legal issues with the group The Tempations.

As their debut CD was released, (after a move to major label Atco Records) Mari left the group and was replaced by Sheila Vega.

After two big dance hits (Take It While It's Hot & Never Let You Go), the group released what was supposed to be the last single from the CD, "Sincerely Yours".

"Sincerely Yours" became a surprise Top 20 pop hit. Wanting to strike while the iron was hot, Atco re-released the first song "Hooked On You" with a new video, and it got to #23 on the pop charts this time.

She's also about to release another CD in the near future.

The show I was at last night was the CD release party for Nyasia and her new CD, "This Is Me".

No videos are available on YouTube yet as this was just released.

Nyasia didn't want to sign the front of the CD across her face, so she signed the back.

The two songs I'll remember from 2011 probably are Rolling In the Deep and Born This Way.

In regards to the country music songs......it's a bit of an explanation.

I was always a "chart freak" and I used to buy Billboard magazine each week to go over all the charts....Country, Dance/club, R&B, Hot 100.  For a long time (up to the late 90s) the Hot 100 singles chart was an equal "weight" between copies sold, and airplay on radio.

In the late 90s songs started getting airplay but were not released as singles by the record companies.  As a result, Billboard changed thier methodology, giving more credit to airplay than copies sold, so that airplay only songs could chart on the Hot 100.

With this change, songs that were receiving airplay by stations across the US could then chart on the Hot 100, which meant that country singles were getting more exposure.   When airplay became the driving thrust to push the song up the Hot 100, country songs got break, and country artists saw their songs start climbing the Hot 100.

On top of that, with the single nearly extinct, and digital downloads from I-Tunes and such accounting for sales, more country songs are getting the download figures that popsongs are, so acts like Carrie Underwood, Jason Aldean, Lady Antebellum and others are hitting the pop charts on a more regular basis.

As for Adele, she's had a fantastic year, with only two hit songs from her CD.  I'm thinking we'll hear a lot more from Adele in 2012.  I've let people borrow my copy of "21" and everyone always says the same thing "I love the song 'Set Fire To The Rain' off of it."  Well, two NY stations just started to play "Set Fire To The Rain" on a regular basis, so I'm willing to bet that's her next big hit.

Nice!!! I know all the country tunes, because that's what I listen to in the car. I know a couple of the hip-hop/rap tunes from jukeboxes in bars that I frequented (until a few weeks ago) in the 'hood. The pop and rock stuff I know very little because I don't ear that music unless a musical guest makes an appearance on a TV show. Even then, most of the TV I watch is PBS.

I had no idea Billboard had changed its methodology. I stopped reading it in the late 80s. But what you say makes perfect sense. It is also interesting how many more unknown country singers are attracted to shows like American Idol, America's Got Talent since the shows started out.

Yes, country artists are definitely getting exposure and cross-over success through those shows.

As for the new methodology for Billboard, one of the first acts to really benefit from it was the late R&B singer Aaliyah.  In 1998 (when Billboard made their switch) she had a song out called "Are You That Somebody" which was getting heavy airplay, and it was determined that if the song was able to chart on airplay alone, it would've been a #1 song.  Because there was no single commercially available, it wasn't on the Hot 100 chart at all.  Then Billboard made the change, and "Are You That Somebody" was able to enter the Hot 100 and it climbed to #21 on airplay alone.

Her next single did the same thing, and when it was about to peak, the record company released a single.  Between airplay and the sudden surge in sales, her song "Try Again" went on to hit #1 on the Hot 100.

Oh yes. I would say that made a significant difference.

I knew of her, but didn't hear any of her music until she died.

Ok, so here is my review of the MDNA show at Yankee Stadium Thursday night.

If you have tickets to a future show and don’t want any “spoilers”, then stop reading now.

The tickets said that the show was due to start at 8, and I guess that people thought that mean that Madonna would take the stage at 8.  Silly people.  At about 8:30 DJ Avicii took the the stage and did an hour long mix of his music/mixes, basically turning Yankee Stadium into a giant club.  A number of people were up and dancing during his set.

He stopped at 9:30, and the crew came out to break down his mix-center and clear the stage.

Madonna took to the stage at 10:15.  The music was LOUD!  At some points I felt like it was very hard to hear Madonna singing.

It also seemed that perhaps 4 months of touring may be doing a number on Madonna’s vocal chords.  It seemed to me that on some of the newer songs, she was helped with pre-recorded vocals.  Other songs were very obviously  autotuned, either to cover up vocal issues or to fit in with thay particular style that is so prevalent in pop music today.  That being said, Madonna did sing live and unaided on  all of her older songs, as well as some of the newer ones.

I think there were a few fans who were disappointed at the song selections that were played, expecting more classics.  However, it was announced the tour is to support her latest CD (MDNA) so just what were they execting?  I went in knowing that the show’s set list would be very heavy on her new material.  The drawback at this is that at 54, pop radio isn’t playing Madonna’s new stuff, so people are not as familiar with it unless they’ve been playing their copies of the CD over and over.

The show ran in a format that was similar to a “mix-tape” with one song blending into the next, without many stops or breaks in the show.

Opening Prayer /Girl Gone Wild (from MDNA) -  The stage was set as a giant church, with Madonna in a confessional.  You see Madonna (in silhouette) pull out a machine gun and break out of the confessional to the sounds of gunfire and explosions, and then launch into Girl Gone Wild.   Her stage was almost in constant movement, with a number or rising platforms and two trap doors that were utilized often.  Audience participation was high, as this video go airplay on many channels.

Revolver (from Celebration) -  This was one of the new tracks that was recorded for her latest greatest hits effort.  The song has Madonna comparing her love to a loaded revolver, and she and her dancers strutted about the stage dressed in black, brandishing revolvers at each other and the audience.

Gang Bang (from MDNA) – While this title sounds sexual in nature, it’s an angry divorce song where Madonna sings:  “bang bang, shot you dead, shot my lover in the head”.  The stage has a small prop that appears to be a cross-section of a hotel room.  Madonna drinks bottles of hard liquor and seeks revenge on her male dancers, taking them out one by one, with the large video screen behind her showing blood splatter effects after each shot.

Papa Don’t Preach (from True Blue) – This performance had Madonna laying onstage after her rampage, or kneeling , as if asking for forgiveness for her violent acts.  At the end of this song, Madonna is captured and dragged off in chains by her male dancers.  Like the opening, audience participation was high compared to Gang Bang and Revolver, which were not radio hits.

Hung Up (from Confessions On A Dancefloor) – After being dragged off to center stage, Madonna and her dances begin to dance, jump and contort themselves on a set of highwires.  This song was “re-done” and heavily autotuned throughout the full song.

I Don’t Give A (from MDNA) - This song is a rap style song with Madonna discussing issues in her personal life, from dealing with motherhood, not having a pre-nup, tabloids and press, and basically anyone who criticizes her.  Lyrics include:  “I’m gonna be okay, I don’t care what the people say, I’m gonna be alright, Gonna live fast and I’m gonna live right, I’m moving fast, can you follow my track?  I’m moving fast and I like it like that, I do ten things all at once, And if you have a problem, I don’t give a...”  A rap by Nicki Minaj is part of the song, and she appears in a pre-filmed performance.

It’s at this point that Madonna stops performing and addresses the audience.  She had greeted us before and shouted out NY, but this is much more in-depth.  She talks about the things she’s seen overseas during her tour, the persecution that people are put through for being gay, for being female, for following a different religion, and that it made her appreciate being an American all the more, and told her audience that they needed to be mindful of the rights they have now, which get taken for granted.

Best Friend / Heartbeat (Interlude) – Madonna  was not on stage for this part.  Her dancers entertained the audience while these songs played together as she and her dancers changed their costumes.

Express Yourself / Born This Way (From Like A Prayer) -  Madonna takes the stage wearing a drum majorette outfit, changing the dark theme of the prior stage sets.  The costumes are bright white and red and the whole attitude of the show has become lighter.  Not long ago Lady Gaga released her song “Born This Way” and many people commented on how similar it sounded to Madonna’s “Express Yourself”, so Madonna drove the point home even more, by singing some of the lyrics to “Born This Way” while the music to “Express Yourself” played.  She even went on to sing a few lings of her song “She’s Not Me”, a slap at Gaga for copying Madonna’s style.

Give Me All Your Luvin’  (from MDNA) – This was the first single from the new CD, and the one that Madonna performed at the Super Bowl back in February.  When the song started, Madonna was joined by a drum corp that performed while suspended in air above the stage.

Turn Up The Radio (from MDNA) – The third (and most likely last) single from the MDNA cd.  There was a bit of an intro, with images of Madonna through the years flashed, giving her a chance to get out of her majorette outfit and grab a guitar, where she stood center stage and played while singing.

Open Your Heart (from True Blue) – I have a very hard time describing the musical style of the version that was performed on the tour….no autotune, and audience participation was high, but it was definitely not the version that is well known.

Masterpiece (from MDNA) -  This song won Madonna a Golden Globe for Best Song from a picture.  A ballad, Madonna used the opportunity to sit onstage with her dancers and perform the song, which she describes as a song about love.  Before starting, she verbally thanked all the fans for all the support she has been given by them for the past 30 years.  This one was my favorite track from her last CD.

Justify My Love (Interlude) (from The Immaculate Collection) – Madonna was not onstage for this, it was video of her playing while she changed costumes, her dancers were onstage performing.

Vogue (from Dick Tracy Soundtrack) – Madonna and her crew come onstage in high-fashion/couture outfits.  No visible autotune on this track at all, and it was a version that was faithful to the original.

Candy Shop/Erotica  (from Hard Candy) – Two sex songs from two CDs, “mashed” together as one.  This song found Madonna and her dancers moving provocatively and groping each other as they moved about the stage.

Human Nature (from Bedtime Stories) – Madonna takes center stage to sing her song about how she was feeling persecuted against during the Sex Book stage of her career.  At  different times in the song her dancers try to grab her and stop her from moving around, but she breaks free from them all and continues on.

Like A Virgin (from Like A Virgin) – a completely stripped down version of this song, where Madonna performs it as a piano ballad at a very slow tempo. A bare-chested male dancer later appears on stage and tenderly holds and caresses her, but near the end of the song, pulls the laces on her corset, restricting her breathing.

Nobody Knows Me (Interlude) – a final costume change, which not only has her dancers onstage, but also uses video screens to flash political messages that included images of war, gay pride, and other images.  Most striking was a montage of young gay/transgendered youths who committed suicide due to the mistreatment they had been dealt.  If you want to see the clip, you can click the link below.

I’m Addicted (from MDNA) – Techno/dance track that featured Madonna and her dancers onstage in black and dancing in synch.

I’m A Sinner (from MDNA) -  This song was performed as a 60s trippy song.  If you remember her song “Beautiful Stranger” from the Austin Powers movie, you’ll have a good idea of what it sounded like.  Sections of the stage had raised up and images on them to make them appear as Volkswagon busses.  While Madonna stayed on the center bus with her guitar singing, her dancers jumped from bus to bus, wobbling around purposefully to make it appear they were “surfing” on moving vehicles.

Like A Prayer (from Like A Prayer) – Madonna performed a great version of this song, a bit “dancier” than the original version, and it had everyone on their feet dancing and singing along with her.  Halfway through the song she was joined onstage by a full choir to finish the song with her.

Celebration (from Celebration) – The closer of the show, like Revolver, the other new song from her last Greatest Hits package.  Madonna was joined onstage by her whole troupe of dancers, fully utilizing the stage, all the trap doors and rising platforms, and lighting effects to make the stage appear as a giant dance club.

Overall, I was impressed with all the elements of the show, and felt that Madonna definitely gave me my money’s worth.

Overall, I was impressed with all the elements of the show, and felt that Madonna definitely gave me my money’s worth.

Glad to hear you weren't disappointed. :)

Quote

Now the only question is whether you took notes or you remembered all the stuff step by step!
Either way, I'd say you're a crazy nutter. :o ;)

Madonna to Be Honored as Top Touring Artist at Billboard Music Awards

By Billboard Staff  | May 08, 2013

Madonna will be honored with the Top Touring Artist award at the upcoming Billboard Music Awards, an achievement earned by the worldwide success of her MDNA tour.

The sold out 88-date run was 2012's top-grossing tour with $305 million. It's the pop icon's latest chart landmark in a career full of them, including records for Hot 100 top 10 singles (38 of her overall 56 Hot 100 hits) and Dance Club Songs No. 1s (43). Her "MDNA" album bowed at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 -- her eighth trip to the penthouse -- with sales of 359,000.

The 2013 Billboard Music Awards will air Sunday, May 19 at 8 p.m. ET on ABC, live from Las Vegas' MGM Grand Garden Arena. "30 Rock" alum Tracy Morgan will host, with Don Mischer producing.

Madonna will take the stage to accept her award, with superstars from Prince to Taylor Swift to Lil Wayne set to perform. Other performers joining the ceremony include Nicki Minaj, Bruno Mars, Miguel, Justin Bieber, Pitbull, Christina Aguilera, Selena Gomez, the Band Perry, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Chris Brown, Ed Sheeran, Akon, Ne-Yo, David Guetta and Icona Pop.

I would not recognise any of the songs. I have heard Royals becasue there have been items on the NZ news about Lorde. I recognise some of the names - Pink, Eminem and Justin Timberlake.
Then I am older :)  and am very sad to hear of the death of one of the Everly Brothers. He was older than me (but not by much). They were one of the first pop stars with which I became infatuated as a youth. I actually bought 2 CDs of their songs a year or so ago. 'Cathy's Clown' and 'Dream" really brought goosebumps on the news last night.

It has been 25 years this week since Madonna's "Like A Prayer" hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

;D

Feeling old?

"Like a Prayer" is a song recorded by the American singer Madonna for her 1989 studio album of the same name. Sire Records released it as the lead single from the album on March 3, 1989. Written and produced by Madonna and Patrick Leonard, "Like a Prayer" denoted a more artistic and personal approach to songwriting for Madonna, who felt she needed to cater more to her adult audience.

The music video, directed by Mary Lambert, portrays Madonna as a witness to a murder of a black girl by white supremacists. While a black man is arrested for the murder, Madonna hides in a church for safety seeking strength to go forth as a witness. The clip depicts Catholic symbols such as stigmata, Ku Klux Klan-style cross burning, and a dream about kissing a black saint. After its release, the Vatican condemned the video, while family and religious groups protested its broadcast. They boycotted products by soft drink manufacturer Pepsi, which used the song for a commercial. Madonna's contract with Pepsi was then canceled, although she was allowed to retain her initial fee.

Got you beat. I don't know any of them. I'm really old.

Unless Lady Antebellum's Downtown is a cover of the great Petula Clark hit, which I doubt.

Taylor Swift has a lot of nerve calling someone else "Trouble."

And what does "ft." mean?

Madonna Sets New Record

The Queen of Pop is now unequaled chart royalty. Madonna makes momentous Billboard chart history, as she now has the most No. 1s ever, 45, by an act on a singular Billboard chart. She earns her 45th No. 1 on Dance Club Songs, where "Ghosttown" lifts 3-1.

With the coronation, Madonna passes another icon, George Strait, who's logged 44 No. 1s on Hot Country Songs.

"Thanks to all my fans on and off the dancefloor," Madonna said in an exclusive statement to Billboard. "I'll (always) be your partner."

With her 45th leader on Dance Club Songs, which measures reports submitted by a national sample of club DJs, Madonna pulls further ahead of runners-up Beyonce and Rihanna. In fact, Madonna has tallied more No. 1s as they have combined: 22 each.

Madonna bests Strait (still, and always, the King of Country), who's sent 44 singles to No. 1 on Hot Country Songs between 1982 and 2009. He first reigned with "Fool Hearted Memory" (Aug. 28, 1982) and most recently ruled with "River of Love" (April 18, 2009).

Madonna is making waves with her new video.

In only three days, the video has a total of over 9 million views, and has been trending all over the web, due to the cameos in the video.   Recording artist Rita Ora, actor/comedian Chris Rock, Miley Cyrus, fashion designer Alexander Wang, producer Diplo, Beyoncé, Katy Perry, David Banda (Madonna's adopted son), Kanye West, Nicki Minaj, who also raps on the track.

The music is very much something that kids in the clubs would jam to, and everyone seems to be enjoying themselves.

Title: Madonna sings Edith Piaf
Post by: CellarDweller on September 13, 2015, 11:22:17 pm
Madonna's latest tour (Rebel Heart) opened in Canada, and she surprised her audience with a small speech about not giving up on love, and that was why she was going to sing "one of the greatest love songs ever written"

With Ukuele in hand, Madonna then started to sing Edith Piaf's "Le Vie En Rose".

Videos posted to YouTube have the internet buzzing over the fact that on her opening night, she admitted her French is not good, and she flubbed one of the lines, and grimaced.  However, the singing stopped when she made her error, proving Madonna sings live on her tours.  It also showed just how good her voice really is.

Here's a video from her second night of the tour, so the mistake mentioned above is not there.

Here is the video with the mistake, and the speech just before.  The person filming didn't have a very steady hand, so it's not as good as the video above.  The mistake comes in at 2:00 minute mark.

Have you all seen Sia's new video, "The Greatest"? The young dancer that's in all her videos (Maddie Ziegler) is leading a troupe of young dancers, they are all dancing and having fun, and at the end, they all drop to the floor, revealing bullet holes in the wall behind them. It's a tribute to the Orlando Pulse victims.

Title: Re: Music Music Music - Nena's show at Playstation Theater
Post by: CellarDweller on October 05, 2016, 05:34:37 pm
Ok, so here is the story behind the Nena concert.

Got to the Playstation Theater 30 minutes before the doors opened, and people on line were very friendly. You could see who had purchased "meet & greet" tickets, as they were carrying their memorabilia with them, just as I was.

The theater had a large empty floor in front of the stage, then another section of floor that was raised up by a flight of stairs, and behind that a section of seats. By the time the lights went down, both sections of floor were filled, and a number of seats were taken.

Nena made the concert a family affair, her background singers were her twins, daughter Larissa Marie and son Sakias Manuel. Nena mentioned from the stage that Larissa is the mother of two, and Sakias the father of one, and that she is enjoying being a grandmother at 57.

Nena opened with her latest Euro hit, "Genau Jetzt" ("Right Now"). After she finished, she said she hoped we didn't mind that she would be singing in German. Of course, we didn't care.

Near the middle of the show, Nena sat and talked with us, and said she wanted to do a "minute of silence" because there is so much trouble in the world, she just wanted us to be silent for one minute, and concentrate on putting good vibes out into the world. After the minute passed, she played her song "Wunder Gescheh'n" (Miracles Happen).

While we all know Nena for new wave, the show was definitely a rock show, with most of her music getting a harder rock cover than the versions on the CDs.

As the show neared the end, she announced that her next song would be "99 Luftballons", and quite by surprise, original Nena keyboardist Ewe Fahrenkrog-Petersen had made the trip to NYC, and would join Nena for the rest of the show. One small nod to her former group, she changed the lyrics at the end of "99 Luftballons" from "Found a balloon, Think of you and let it fly " to "found a balloon, think of Rolf, Carlos, Ewe, and Jurgen, and let it fly"

After "99 Luftballons" she came back for a two song encore, and then ended the show.

The meet & great, unfortunately was rushed. A large group paid the extra for M & G, and time was limited. I did get to meet Nena, hug her, and tell her I've waited 34 years for this show. She was very sweet, enjoyed talking with everyone, and was surprised at the amount of American fans who showed up for her show.

Sorry guys, I didn't realize the title of the article didn't get posted correctly.   Billboard celebrated the 60th anniversary of the Hot 100 chart by counting down the top 60 female artists.  I believe the list was compiled by combining number of hit singles, sales, airplay amounts and things like that.

I corrected my original post, so the title is there now.

Madonna has released her latest Greatest Hits package.  Titled "Finally Enough Love:  50 Number Ones", the collection commemorates the record Madonna recently set, becoming the first and only artist to accumulate 50 #1 singles on any Billboard chart.

Madonna has managed to get 38 Top 10 singles on the Hot 100 chart, and while her newer releases don't get radio play now, dance clubs still play her new music, and on the Billboard Dance charts is where she  has set the record.

Not even that many for me. Now I don't feel quite as bad for not knowing any Taylor Swift, Beyonc?, etc. I thought it was me being old but I guess it's more about me being less into pop.

I like that she's not wearing nail polish in the picture. I think young women today with their long manicured intricately polished nails think older women are just dowdy, but actually fingernail polish (unlike toenail polish) was unfashionable in those years and I've just stuck with that ever since. Which I guess is sort of the definition of dowdy, but oh well.

I've always been into pop and dance music, and I still listen to current stuff.  I will admit, I like what I grew up with better.   When we lost Olivia Newton-John, I spent a few days walking around singing her songs.

As for the picture, it's interesting to see it in color.  It appears to be from the same photoshoot that produced the cover of her debut album in 1983.

That's a great album too, I love my copy!

As for your questions regarding the songs, I have that info for you!  ;D

"Borderline" (released in '84) got to #10 on the Hot 100 chart, and only #4 on the Top Dance Singles Chart, so it is ineligible for the boxed set.

"La Isla Bonita" (released in '87) got to #4 on the Hot 100, and surprisingly, did not chart on the Dance Singles Chart, so it is ineligible for the boxed set.

"Dress You Up" (released in '85) got to #5 on the Hot 100, and only #3 on the Top Dance Singles Chart, so it is ineligible for the boxed set.

I'm with you on the music. As for nail polish, my mother never used anything other a clear lacquer.

Well, your mother is in a different generation obviously, influenced by different fashion trends. My mom never used colored polish either but a lot of her cohort did. Back then, long pointy nails, with or without polish, were popular for women her age. Now they're back again. But around the era of the Madonna picture they were out, and even supermodels had short, unpolished nails.

I've noticed that two of my neighbors -- one 75 and one 79 -- wear their fingernails long and filed to points. Clear or no polish. Not, I assume, because that look is now trendy among 20-something but because they've always thought that was proper and maintained the habit even during Madonna's peak years.

Quote
As for toenail polish--I guess I'll get slapped for this--I've always felt it looked a little, well, slutty not in good taste.

Well [*shrugs*], I'm a slut.   (That's a Jennifer Aniston line from a Friends episode years on years ago that I found funny and have always remembered. Her sister asks why she owns a slutty looking dress and that's her reply. There was more to the situation but I can't remember it.)

Just as fingernail polish went out of style, toenail polish became de rigueur. Or as the essayist Meghan Daum once put it, "Around 1990, it became illegal for women to leave the house without toenail polish." (Another funny line I remember from years ago.) I would say many more women, of all generations, wear it than don't. You've probably been surrounded by sluts all this time and didn't notice.

I see guys using it now.....I don't like it.

I'm on the fence about that. It wouldn't make a guy especially attractive to me -- more likely the opposite. But I do like that guys are feeling freer to wear "feminine" things because it's always been so taboo for men to do anything resembling women, which I believe is rooted in misogyny. I remember when even long hair or earrings on men drew disapproval.

Did you happen to see recent red-carpet photos of Brad Pitt wearing a skirt? I feel sort of the same way about men in skirts. Brad's ensemble was not particularly attractive -- it looked sloppy, with a crooked hem and baggy untucked shirt; you wouldn't see a woman celeb dressed that way except maybe Billie Eilish. But I liked that he was doing it.

My son has grown his hair to about bicep length. He usually wears it in a bun for work but sometimes just down his back when not working. Last fall he had shoulder surgery and needed to keep his hair up but couldn't raise his arm. So his girlfriend gave him two French braids, pigtail style. I'd never seen that style on a guy before. I can't say it was especially attractive but again, I liked that he was doing it. He's also fairly good looking and wears a beard, so those things helped.

Side note: I recently read an essay online by a waitress who said whenever she wears her hair in pigtails she gets more tips. Other waitresses chimed in to say they'd had the same experience. It was creepy, they said, because the implication is that the style made them look like little girls, appealing to men's latent pedophilia. My son is a waiter but I'm not sure the style was lucrative for him.

What really creeps me out is black nail polish whoever is wearing it.

It's not my favorite look but I don't really mind it. Until about 15-20 years ago, throughout history, nail polish always had to be some shade of red or pink. Now it's every imaginable color. I like that much better.

I'm less fond of intricate designs -- little patterns or pictures, tips different color than the rest of the nail, etc. Lately I've seen women wearing random mixtures of colors on different fingers. I don't have any great objection to these but they seem way more trouble than they're worth.

Well, I won't argue the point, but I'd go with homophobia before I'd go with misogyny--but it might well be that this is a "chicken or the egg" sort of thing.

   Good point, but I'll have to take your word for it. In my sheltered, straight, Midwestern life I never saw a drag queen until sometime after the Madonna pic was taken.

Yes, I think it's absolutely chicken/egg. But then, traditionally girls haven't gotten anywhere near the same level of stigma if they dress like boys or even ride "boy bikes," even though by the same token that behavior could be equated with lesbianism.

Quote

I think they'll do.

At 58, his face and torso are still well worth ogling, so although I didn't inspect his legs carefully -- the skirt was knee-length and he may have been wearing boots -- they probably sufficed.

Well, why sit around guessing? What I don't get is the sloppy arrangement. Does that help code it as more masculine?

This morning I decided to root out my old LP of "A Festival of Carols in Brass," an old, old recording by the Philadelphia Orchestra's Brass Ensemble; it isn't Christmas for me without that album.

I ended up looking through my old LPs. I don't have many of them, but they do more or less make a time capsule of the mid Seventies to the early Eighties.

I pulled out an LP I've probably not listened to in, I don't know, 35 years? It's Dan Fogelberg's "Greatest Hits" album. Now, there was a singer who really had a way with a ballad.

(Anybody else remember him?)

I can't listen to this one without tearing up and almost bawling: "The Leader of the Band."

Oh yes, I remember Dan Fogelberg.

"Longer", "Same Auld Lang Syne", "Language of Love" were all faves of mine.

This was my favorite of his, a duet with Tim Weisberg--"Since You've Asked".  ''

I read yesterday that he actually did run into his high school sweetheart in a convenience store.

I suppose you wouldn't exactly call him Brokie-ish, but he did have a working ranch near Pagosa Springs.

I don't believe I've ever heard that one. It's very pretty. I like the melody.  :)
