This is a poll taken from the book, "The Day America Told The Truth" by James Patterson & Peter Kim, published in 1991.
It was featured on an episode of "The Oprah Winfrey Show", and after watching it, I went out and got the book.
Very intersting read at the time. I'm sure by now the figures are out of date.
Vote for your answers, post about your answers, and if it goes well, I'll do some of the other surveys from the book! Since it's possible for people to be willing to do all 10 options, you are free to vote for all the options.
-
as you can see, I'm the first voter.
I have no strong ties to a church, so abandoning my church would not be a problem. Besides, it says abandon your CHURCH, not your RELIGION, so you an always find another church in the religion of your choice.
as for prostitution, this may sound strange, but I don't see anything wrong with it. I mean, why is it ok to have sex for free, but wrong to charge money for it?
-
I would become a prostitute for a green card never mind 10 million, give up church, never started with that.I wouldn't have a problem with a race change either. I would not kill or abandon my family for any sum, or put my kids up for adoption.
It reminds me of the age old which would you rather lose, sight or hearing. For me it would be sight, could not cope without my music.
I would leave my spouse, get the 10 million, buy myself an American husband, get green card, then go back to husband, after having given new husband most of the 10 million.
Would divorce new husband, get green cards for my kids and then when the oldest could, would get him to sponsor his father's green card. Just in case of any suspicion I would keep some of the money to buy a second house where I would allegedly live incase of suspicion.Meanwhile I would of course be back with husband.
If you think that's complicated you should hear some of my other schemes for a green card.
-
That scheme for a green card does sound complicated.
I wouldn't have a problem with abandoning my church either. Likewise for changing my race. I'd consider changing my gender, if it was a painless and instantaneous process.
I can't disagree with the logic that sex for money isn't wrong, but I wouldn't be comfortable with sex with strangers, so I couldn't become a prostitute for a week.
I'm not married and don't have children, but if I were and if I did, I wouldn't abandon my spouse or my children or my whole family because people are more important to me than any amount of money. Likewise, my American citizenship makes me feel safe, so I wouldn't give that up. And no, I wouldn't kill a stranger for money.
It would be tempting and fairly painless to withhold testimony, but letting a murderer go free could cause such bad consequences to someone else that I'd have to resist that temptation. Of all the choices here, that may be the decision that requires the most thought about ethics and morals, because the murderer's next victim would probably be someone unknown to me.
-
I would do four outta ten..
my american citizenship since I have none, race, church (Like Fiona not an issue for me) and probably even prostitution for a week... hell with even a little of that $10million I could get a lot of vulnerable people outta that trade.
-
Since I don't really have a church right now, I find that's something I could abandon. Also I could change my race. I am very fair-skinned and I burn and freckle easily. I always wished I had a little bit darker skin. I don't have kids so that one doesn't apply to me, but if I had them, I would never be able to give them up. I don't think I could do any of the other things.
-
I don't think I would do any of them. Sooner or later the money would either be gone, or assuming I had invested it wisely, grow tired of it. And yet, I would still be stuck with the bad decisions I had made in order to get the money. :-\
I have read some real horror stories about people suddenly becoming rich. Many of them say they are LESS happy now than they were before becoming wealthy. Money often brings along some unexpected problems that many are not prepared to deal with.
-
Create jobs: as many as possible, honestly!
But can that be added too?
Au revoir,
hugs!
-
There are some things I'd do for 10 million dollars for sure, but none on that list. And I really need some money! :P

I'm withyou Shasta!
I REALLY need the money but none of those things on the list I would do for any amount.
-
The only one I would do is abandon my church since I don't currently have a church that would be easy to do. I also don't have kids, but if I did I would not abandon them so that would be a no. As far as a church goes, as Chuck points out it does not say abandon your religion. A church is just a building and there are lots of buildings that are churches around. I suppose if I had a strong bond with the people of a church it would be more difficult to abandon. As far as the rest of the things I don't think any of them would be worth it.
-
how come there's no "NOPE" option? I wouldn"t do any of those things for $10 million. I wouldnt do any of those things for $100 million, or for any amount of money.
-
I don't have any church so......

How does one change one's race? ???
And would being a prostitute include being a call-girl/escort type or just a streetwalker?

That's the callgirl part. You get to choose. Not sure if I would risk being a streetwalker. Would I have a guard? :P

I didn't realize that callgirls got to choose, but I don't know a lot about different types of prostitution. I guess streetwalkers are the ones you see on tv and actually in real life that are all dressed up standing in bad parts of town. Callgirls are the higher classed ones, right?
-
the survey that I copied from the book doesn't specify between call girl and streetwalker.....it just says prostitute.

Depends on whether they're part of a network or on their own. i.e. whether they have a pimp or not. For those on their own, it's a matter of paychecks if they want to sleep with a guy or not. If they have enough money, they choose who they sleep with. If they don't, and need some bucks, they're less choosy.

I'd sell my boss to a Bangkok brothel for $10 million, but I'd be lucky to get $1.75 for her!!! ;)

Now I have had another think, I could only be one of those high class callgirls/prostitutes,where you can pick and choose, or is that an oxymoron.I would not abandon my husband as I have realised there is a much easier option for a green card.
I could use $550,000 of it, from either abandoning my church or the call girl option, to buy an investment green cars which would give all of us security.I live in real terror of us not getting the card before the oldest hits 21 as he will be thrown back to England, a country he does not know anymore.I still would give up my religion,I ceased to being Catholic years ago, when they refused to annul my marriage to my 1st gay husband, without putting him through a form of mental torture and casting him to the devil for ever.He did not deserve that.
So to all intents I am no longer a Catholic anyway, as according to them I am a bigamist, as they do not recognise my divorce. If Immigration said you can only stay here if you give up your British race to become American I would not hesitate.
As you can see most of my decisions are based upon securing a permanant future here in the place my kids now consider home.
The rest of the money can go towards our best friends here who are at real risk of being thrown back to England so I would get them a Green card as well.
That would leave 9 million, left, so 500,000 for the kids college, then 8.5 million for charities that I am interested in,which are mainly children's charities.
I personally don't want the rest of the money.I simply want the green cards for us and our friends.
I do not believe money buys happiness, but it would buy us a secure future, and allow us to stop being landlocked so I could go visit my parents and be allowed back here.

Funny!

I could only pick the church one.
