Scotch Egg
I watch a lot of cooking shows and read a lot of cookbooks and I have never heard of a Scotch Egg before today:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scotch_egg (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scotch_egg)

I am going try making them tomorrow ;D

I can't seem to get the link to work. I'll go over to Wikipedia and type it in manually. That does look quite interesting, almost like a deep fried hard boiled egg!
Let us know how it turns out! :D
-
Yeah, that sounds pretty good! When I first saw the name of this, I thought you were talking about Scotch as in Scotch whiskey and somehow eggs and whiskey together seemed a bit strange.
Let us know how you liked them!
-
It's basically just a hard boiled egg covered with sausage and bread crumbs, and then fried :o
-
I love boiled eggs. I dont know if I would like them deep fried!!

I was fixing to say dont veggies eat eggs but it would be the sausage that put you off, huh?
-
would be!!!
-
Well, I made Scotch Eggs today. I fried 5 and I baked 5
I like the baked ones better than the fried ones. They are actually quite good! I thought the frying would make the egg rubbery, but it didn't. I was able to get 5 eggs cover with 1 pound of Jimmy Dean pork sausage
Here are the fried ones:

Thanks for your experiment!! The baked ones LOOK more appetizing to me, too!
What? Scotch eggs don't contain Scotch?? A pity!
-
would be!!!
I wonder....how would they be with some OTHER covering...cause the big thing for me would be the crunchy texture...
do Veggetarians eat fried stuff if they are fried in Vegetable oil, Kelda? can you have French Fries and fried pickles? *swoon on the fried pickles*

  Good one, David!
I've heard of Scotch Eggs, but I never knew there was sausage involved! I always thought it was just a breaded and fried hard-boiled egg!
gap, those baked ones do look pretty good - although I'm not a big fan of sausage.

That's what I was wondering, too. What they'd be like if you just coated them in seasoned bread crumbs and then baked them....
Thanks for sharing your results, gap!

and what a fun thread this has turned out to be!
Thanks GAP!!

oh fried pickles are WONDERFUL....get a little ranch to dip them in....ultra tangy, and crunchy YUM
-
ranch?

I just tried a half of one cold for dinner. They are very good cold. I also tried dipping them in ranch and blue cheese dressing, and both seemed to compliment them.
The trick to getting the sausage around the egg is making a large sausage patty, putting the egg in the middle and wrapping the sausage around it. Then you can form it around the egg.
Bon Appetit!

ranch?
ranch dressing....

ranch dressing....
I don't know wat ranch dressing is!

Looks like this: (http://i36.tinypic.com/1zcnugw.jpg)

I don't know wat ranch dressing is!
it is a white dressing for salads..
here is one recipe
1/2 cup mayonnaise
1/2 cup sour cream
1/2 cup buttermilk
1 tablespoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1 teaspoon dried dill weed
1 tablespoon dried chives
1 tablespoon dried parsley
2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese
1 dash hot pepper sauce
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon ground white pepper
it is smooth and cool and seriously put on EVERYTHING....people use it to dip chips in, pizza, fried cheese, fried pickles...it is like a staple over here. It is so common hearing you don't know what it is is like hearing you dont' know what salt is! (It is that omnipresent)
-
ahh... I couldn't eat it anyway - worcestershire sauce.... that means there is fish in it!

That recipe up there you posted sounds better to me Jess. I'm not a real big fan of sausage. :P
I'll have to try making those eggs soon because I'm getting more and more intrigued.

I was surprised, too, when I learned that anchovies are an ingredient in Worcestershire sauce. But Worcestershire is good on steak! :D
MSG = monosodium glutamate, a chemical flavor enhancer. Notoriously used in Chinese food, at least, here in the U.S., it can trigger migraines in some people. :(

I had a scotch egg for lunch today at work - I popped to the supermarket just down the road in my lunch break and they'd got them on special offer, and I couldn't resist! :D "Picnic eggs" are quite nice as well - they're a variation on scotch eggs but much smaller - usually with scrambled egg/mayo in the middle with the sausage-meat and breadcrumbs around it - they're usually about an inch in diameter (around 3cm for those metricised youngsters ;)).

Cheese on toast is nice with a dash of Worcestershire sauce as the cheese is melting as well, and adds a bit of flavour (and a smear of mustard as it's melting gives it a bit of a kick too).

Low fat scotch eggs I made today with ground turkey ;D :

I get the BBC on my Cable TV in the states. I also watch his other shows on the BBC. The "F" word (meaning food) and Kitchen Nightmares. On the F word he shows a lot of his cooking methods, which I enjoy.
