Title: Fantasy Scenes
Post by: jpwagoneer1964 on June 19, 2006, 12:01:05 am
Just thought I would take the moderator up on this suggestion:
Here is one that was probably shot as I and some of you have seen at least two stills. It looks to be a greeting hug of Jack and Ennis on the beginning their last trip, "Sometimes I miss you....."
Please lets know any scenes you would have liked to see in the movie.

Wow, jpwagoneer, that's hardly even a fantasy -- that's one for the DEDVD (Deluxe Edition DVD)! Beautiful, too. Thanks for starting this thread!

OK, I'll just start right out with a potentially NC17 one, after having cautioned against going overboard on these! I would like to see the scene that occurred after Ennis and Jack climbed out of the water on the camping trip following their reunion.

(Let me just add that the post that prompted this suggestion for a thread in the first place -- jpwagoneer's beautifully articulated images of Jack driving up to the reunion -- was much more cinematic and better thought out and specific and full of lovely, vivid imagery. I would like to do the same, but somehow find myself unable, when picturing the scene above, to ... well, put it in words.)

(I was going to say unable to type, but I knew some of you would get the wrong idea.)

We also missed the greeting embrace in the second camping trip shown when Jack in putting on corn to cook, Ennis gets out of his truck (with fishing gear) and walks toward Jackand then cut. It may have been filmed as well.

Wow!  Great thread!  Yes, the post skinny dipping scene would be fun...  But come on now people... we all know that we want to see exactly what happened between leaving the apartment following the reunion kiss and arriving at the motel... Or between leaving the apartment that afternoon through all of the motel scene and then on to the diner for breakfast.
 ;)

Actually, this could link up nicely with the skinny dipping scene...

Wow!  Great thread!  Yes, the post skinny dipping scene would be fun...  But come on now people... we all know that we want to see exactly what happened between leaving the apartment following the reunion kiss and arriving at the motel... ...snip...

Hmmm, the scene in the motel ... for a start a whole fireproof set would have been needed cos of all the sparks this would generate; second all persons involved - including the actors - would pass out from the intensity of the scene thus further lowering the probability this scene could ever have been committed to film; thirdly, there hasn't been a warning rating invented that could be put on the footage; and lastly,  I think the whole film industry would have something to say about the fact that no-one in the world over the age of 16 ever wanted to watch any other film ever again!

Seriously, about the motel scene.  This is one of the most sacred parts of the story, probably my most hallowed part of all, and I for one would be content to leave it private between J & E.  Although I do read fan fics, a lot do not cover this part but if they do, the authors treat it with great respect I find in general.  I honestly don't know how Heath & Jake could have acted anything in that scene other than an extended version of what we get.  They have already given us all the build up in that kiss.  But it would have been nice to see more of them on the way to the skinny dipping scene: to make up for all the tension of the build up to the reunion & to show more of them being so relieved they found each other again, Ennis especially - his whole being is simply glowing now Jack is back in his life.

Thought I would put this here if ok.
Wouldn't have been cool if on the the day of the reunion scene they show Jack getting in his Red/white truck long before daylight in Childress, getting on the hwy,  few hours later seeing the sun rise to the east as his truck eats up the road, eating sandwiches out of his metal lunch box so he won't have to stop, coffee out of thermos, flashing back to Ennis waiting for him, back to Jack making his way through Colorado, pensive look on his face ( if he only knew ), back to Ennis chain smoking, back to Jack  a few hours later, road signs to Wyoming thru windshield bitting his nails, then lighting a smoke with the truck lighter, Ennis asleep on couch, mid afternoon truck from outside passes the green road mllage  sign 'Riverton 107 miles', from inside Jack barrels down on the accelrator, we see the speedo pass 80MPH, determined look in his face  and so on. Maybe with "the Wings"version used m the remix video www.youtube.com/watch?v=WOJAXto3hj8&mode as backround music.

I have said this in other threads.I always felt robbed in the lake scene we didn't get to see Jack and Ennis's final moments or perhaps words. I would settle for them picking each other up arm and arm to the truck,Jack saying "see you in November". But what would really bee cool would be: Change in camera angle so you know the stayed locked on each other for a while, Jack picking Ennis up grabing him by his collar "Damn you Ennis, don't you EVER think that your nothing or nowhere. I wouldn't ever mean to hurt you. For 20 years I can never wait until the next time I see you and for the next 20 years it will be the same. I sorry I got mad but its just I miss you so much.... when you said ....about August. Its ok Ennis will have a time In November...ok". Walk arm and arm to the truck, final embrace both with tears and heartfelt kiss.

That sounds about perfect, jp. And I agree, that is one point in the story when I really long to see the part that didn't get filmed.

I would have like to have seen what happened in between Jack's:

"Tell you what ..... the truth is ..... sometimes I miss you so much I can hardly stand it" and the next scene where it shows Ennis and Jack sleeping ...Ennnis' arm around Jack.

Sigh!

I'd love to see this scene during their last fishing trip: 'they set up camp without saying much, picketed the horses in the meadow. Jack broke the seal on on a bottle of whiskey, took a long, hot swallow, exhaled forcefully and said, "That's one a the two things I need right now" capped and tossed it to Ennis.'

There are two other scenes I would love to see ....

SNIT: What happened after the gentle and comforting kissing scene? I am sure this would be very different than the FNIT. How wonderful and tender the sex would be .... they would be "making love" vs. just having sex. Sigh!! I am getting heart palpitations.

The second one I would like to see ...

After SNIT scene ... unsure actual timeline: Jack and Ennis are joking around. Ennis' belt is undone. They fall to the ground and kiss. Then we don't see what else Aguirre is seeing. According to the book, Aguirre waits to go down to the camp until Jack and Ennis have both put  on their pants and Ennis has left to go up to the sheep. Yeow!!! ::)

Finally, something we can really agree on, Diane!  :)

One of the things that I love about BBM is that both the emotional part of the relationship and the sexual part of the relationship are extremely compelling. Most movies, it seems like one or the other (or neither) might be powerful, but in this case both are breathtaking.

Agreed.  But I would love to have seen even more of the emotion, more loving glances, embraces & even slight touches - a LOVE affair that even the most resistant viewer could not deny.
Title: Re: Fantasy Scenes

Me too! Of course, the MOST resistant viewer wants no love or sex at all, and probably bolted during the first tent scene. But we can do without them.

You'd think Ang could at the very least have allowed a few more "loving glances, embraces & even slight touches" -- like the  post-coyote-shooting pushes, or the post-Earl-story cheek caressing -- without violating his damnable code of restraint.

I would have also enjoyed seeing more overt affection ... especially from Ennis.

You will have to bear with me when I quote from the story, but I love Annie's descriptions. I would have loved to have seen this in the film! This would have been after the "sometime I miss you so much" dialogue:

Jack slid his cold hands between Ennis' legs .... and they rolled down into the dirt. One thing that never changed: the brilliant charge of their infrequent couplings .....

Note: I did leave out some dialogue. But these lines were my favorite and summarized brilliantly Jack and Ennis' relationship ... even at the end.

Title: Re: Fantasy Scenes

I would have killed for more loving looks between the two, and some sweet talk.  I can think of scenes where Ennis looks fondly at Jack (he is such a good looking man) and instances such as the  FNIT where Jack glances into Ennis' eyes with so much affection that I can't bear it.

Image the 3rd tent scene when it is morning and Jack is still asleep.  Ennis awakes with his arm still over his lover, but instead of waking him, Ennis just looks at Jack, takes in his beautiful form: the spiky hair, the beauty marks, the sleek body.  ::)

Now let us picture any scene when they are about to leave one another.  Ennis and Jack have their arms wrapped around each other so tight, their foreheads are touching and Jack is tracing his husband's jawline with a finger.  They share a tender kiss and as Jack begins to deepen it, Ennis pulls away breathless.  He whispers in Jack's ear, "your kisses feel like honey.  I love you so much, bud."

Okay, I'm sorry, everybody.  I better stop or my housemates will have to dial 911!

I agree, littlewing, more loving looks, especially Ennis --> Jack, would have been GREAT. In fact, one of my favorite moments (one of my 1,000 favorite moments) is when, in the reunion scene, just after Ennis starts to pull away from kissing in order to regain "propriety" and go see Alma ... but first, he strokes Jack's face and looks at him in this sort of slightly pained heavy-breathing besotted way (the way you look at somebody when your knees feel weak)... his face really close ... and then ... the nuzzle ... !!!!

OK, now MY housemates will be calling 911. (And BTW, this is exactly the kind of moment that so many romance movies are lacking.)

The point is, that moment lasted about 5/8ths of a second, and I could have used a LOT more of that sort of thing. Would it have killed them? Would it have really undercut the "never enough time" message all that much? They could add an hour and a half of loving looks and nuzzles and affectionate caresses and it still wouldn't be enough time, in my book. (Please, Director's Cut, please please please!!!)

Okay, 911 is going to be on overload because I am about ready to pass out. That nuzzle is the GREATEST!!! You are all so right ... it (the kissing, nuzzling, etc.)  goes by way too fast. That's why I have to play it at least three times before I can bring myself to continue on with the film. (BTW, that also applies to FNIT and SNIT. YEOW!!! ::))

I am all for a Director's Cut! I don't think any of us can get too much of a good thing!!!

Okay, I am having heart palpitations. I've got to calm down!

If only we could take up a petition or start a letter-writing campaign or picket outside Ang Lee's house or something.  I'm sure -- in fact, he has hinted as much in interviews -- that a lot more of that stuff ended up on the cutting-room floor. Well, pick it up off the floor, man, and get it onto video store shelves!

I'm afraid he won't, though ...  :'( :'( :'( :'(

Diane, I can't believe how this nuzzle is at once both hot and sweet.  After it is over I'm so moved that I have to go walk it off of me!  How did they convey such feeling, such sweet passion in what seemed like a few seconds?

That's for sure. Do you guys remember a thread at imdb titled "Ode to the Nuzzle"? A classic. (And it might be on the archives site.) You're right, littlewing, simultaneously hot and sweet is a good description. And Diane, it's fun to agree with you so vehemently about something! After all these months and hundreds of times of watching that moment (I have a downloaded reunion video), it still really gets to me.

How about we collect $80,000 and put another ad in Variety begging Ang to hand over all omitted love scenes?

Yup, that good ol' reunion scene never loses its power.  Amazing!
 :)

Hey, I have two bits of good news.

(1) That great "Ode to the Nuzzle" thread is in the archives.  Yeehaw!  It really is/was a lovely thread.

(2)  At the time of this posting, BetterMost currently has 481 members.  In order to raise $80,000 we'd all need to pitch in $166.33 (approximately... we'd have $4.73 left over after this with which to buy beans).  That seems possible.  Plus, we'd get a lot for our money since we know that there are at least 13 versions of the first tent scene.  And, I've heard tell that it took them all day to shoot the reunion scene!  Maybe we could all write this contribution off on our taxes as a donation to the betterment of society, humankind, etc.  We all know the world would be a better place with more Brokeback Mountain in it.

Well, it seems that in the last half hour or so... since posting the fundraising calculations... we've acquired 2 new BetterMost members!  Woohoo!  So, the cost of each individual pledge has now gone down!  Seriously, I wonder what Focus Features would do if they woke up one morning to a shiny new check for $80,000 dedicated to the Brokeback cause.  We'd be a good ways towards funding a sequel (and even I wouldn't want that).

Maybe the sequel could start with Ennis waking up and finding out ... it was all a dream! Jack is still alive!

OK, maybe not.

My $80,000 figure was actually based on my recollection of how much the DC forum collected for the Variety ads. But they were able to buy TWO ads, plus purchase DVDs for rural libraries across America. We wouldn't need that much for a single ad.

On the other hand, maybe we could raise the $80,000 and just hand it straight over to Ang as a bribe.

My additional scenes would be:

1. One more scene on the mountain after the second tent scene, showing them just talking or a scene that shows how much everything is right for them at that moment, something like the campfire embrace, just leaning into each other and talking.

2. Ennis coming home to Alma after BBM. I want to write that scene.

3. The WHOLE motel scene (duh) or the scene at the diner before they leave for the mountains. Lovely. But to be honest, I do think that the motel scene works perfectly as it is.

4. Their last camping trip (they talk they had about their kids, the "that's one of the two things I need right now...", I LOVE that in the book).

And you know what, just more of them together in the whole movie, I think somebody once suggested to just skip all the Cassie scenes, all the Monroe scenes, all the Randall scenes and replace them with Jack and Ennis scenes. That would've worked fine by me!  ;D

Hmm, sounds like you may have a fan fic waiting to be written?  Be sure to let us know if you write something!

A lot of my fantasy scenes have been realised by some of the incredible BBM fan fic stories around that fill in the gaps we didn't see.  It's different to seeing it on screen of course.  However, some I've found as moving and some more moving.

There's also been several things I've read that if I'd thought of, I'd certainly have been fantasising about!   ;)

Better late than never: I just need to say that there are no words to express just how much I agree with the above. (As long as that hour and a half also included a sufficient ratio of hot 'n tender kisses, of course. )

I would love to see a scene of the boys all dressed up, Jack the darker one in a black Armani suit, Ennis in a creme colored Brooks Brothers suit.  Both are hatless and they walk into a banquet hand in hand.  As soon as they enter the crowded hall, all talk stops!  Next image the two boys sitting side by side, Jack playing with the curls on the nape of Ennis' neck.  Ennis traces Jack's jawline with a finger, seductively whispers into his husband's ear.   ::)

Okay, I know this could never happen in Jack and Ennis' world, but somehow this image of the two of them being able to be seen in public, be affectionate, always haunts me.  This is my fantasy for the two of them - a scene I would love to see.  :)

That's so funny, I think that's the one I started on imdb.com!

Gang,

I have been jonesing for deleted scenes since early December, so I understand where we're all coming from.

That being said, I do believe that the restraint truly enhances our longing and makes the film powerful in a way it might not be if some of the "unfilmed" scenes were actually included.  Scenes filmed but not included would be very very interesting but I doubt that all together they could cure the longing expressed here for that which simply does not exist.  IMHO if Jack and Ennis ever got what we want them to have, this fascination, this forum, and this discussion simply would never have existed. :)

Deleted scenes would be good .... just as an FYI. You are right that at least the sex scenes were pretty much shot as is (that is what I have read from Ang, anyway). But I think it would be cool to have a couple of commentary tracks ... like one with the screenwriters and Ang. Another one with the cast. So a special edition would be great!!

That's funny, I thought I'd read Ang saying just the opposite -- that they went on much longer but were edited shorter! You may well be right; I haven't kept up with interviews that closely. I hope I am, though! Even if they're not included in a deluxe edition, we can always hope to find a bootlegged version someday.

Read this post on IMBb

Ennis goes to Brokeback around 1965 to contemplate what happened

Ennis look south toward Texas
Jack looking north toward Wyoming, perhaps on a moonlit night.

I had seen a couple of previews before actually seeing the movie. In the preview there is a short clip of Ennis standing with the fireworks behind him. My mind started running ito what the scene was about. Now, it after seeing the scene it is off course very different from what I imagined, but this is what I would've liked to see:

Ennis is alone outside, unaware that Jack is attending the fair, on behalf of his father-in-law, as well. Jack exits the bar only to realize that they are shooting fireworks. Both men, unaware that the other is so close, stands on the grass admiring the fireworks. Then, unexpectedly, they look around and their eyes meet for the first time since Brokeback. For them the whole world just became the size of the distance between them. Nothing else matters, fireworks forgotten. Just the knowledge that what they had on Brokeback was still there, only that is was magnified a thousand times.
In my mind the scene would end with them standing a couple of meters apart, fireworks shooting in the background and "this years love" by David Gray the only sounds heard.

I know...I know..i'm a terrible romantic. So shoot me! I do realise now, after seeing the movie, what importance the actual second meeting had - so even though I don't really want anything changed, I do smile when I think about my original idea of the scene.

First of all ... welcome! Second of all, I am so glad I am not the only hopeless romantic on this board!!

It is funny you mention the fireworks. I have thought it would have been apropos for them to be together when the fireworks were going off for obvious reasons!! Sigh! We can only fantasize!  ::)

I think that fireworks idea is so sweet.

This is true. The lack of any characters' happiness or sexual contact in the second half of the film really increases that depressingly desolate feeling, excellently.

I would've liked to see all of what Aguirre saw on Brokeback.
I would've liked to see Jack telling Ennis about his father abusing him when he was little, still feeling upset about it, and Ennis comforting him.
I would've liked to have a 'wrung it out a hundred times thinkin' about you' line in the movie as well as the book.
Perverted, I know, but I would've liked to see them making love in the motel scene (and the second tent scene).
I would've liked the filmmakers to indicate Jack is thinking about Ennis while having sex with Lureen, as they did with Ennis and Alma (I really liked the "sometimes you feel so lonely..." touch).
Ennis' and Jack's last moments together, although it's quite brilliant and touching that we don't see those, so I'm not complaining.

The restraint in this movie really gives the film an overall feeling that, amongst many other wonderful things, methodic, pure, and hypnotic. This movie is such a tease.

Hallelujah, brother! I agree with everything you have said.

Sometimes it is best that we don't see all of those things that we fantasize about ... it would end up being disappointing. But, it certainly is fun thinking about it!

I agree too, & that is one of the factors that sets it apart from so many of the main blockbuster films where they hand the emotions you should be feeling over on a plate, complete with matching theme music.  :P  It's so lazy!  But there's a time & a place for lazy, just not virtually every single film that's released.

It's interesting that you mention the "theme" music. This film uses music very sparingly. When it does, it is not used as a way to evoke emotion. It is used as a way to supplement what is happening in the story. It is too bad that more films cannot be made like BBM. Even though I have watched it endlessly, I can't shake it. It stays with me .... always!  :)

I thought he'd get the ashes, too. I didn't think about the posthumous visit. However, I thought when Ennis died, his ashes would be scattered on BBM, too, so they could be together for eternity.

There are two other scenes I would love to see ....

Yeow!!! ::)
I think the scene you describe after SNIT is 4-6 weeks later.

Jack to himself:
Damn you Ennis,  I wish I could tell you how much ya mean to me, if I could make you understand how much I missed you, even that first summer so long ago lookin' down at our camp from the mountian at Brokeback. When I try I say it, I f**k it up, say things I never ment you to hear, cause you anger and pain, I forget how scared you are and end up hurting you more. Ennis I hope you can forgive me and you will be here in the fall, I'm so afraid you won't, just like I was so afraid you would send me away if I tried see you after Brokeback. If I could only tell you how I cry my eyes out on side of the road every time we part, and wish that I could be in your arms just like up here always. I live for the days I am with you, and if that's all you can give, I'll accept and treasure those few, let it be till next time, maybe then I can say it right.... I love you so much Ennis Del Mar.

I too thought that Jack's ashes would be spread on Brokeback. When Ennis left the Twist house without the ashes, I was really surprised. It just adds to the hurt of the film, I feel; it tells us that even in death Jack's dreams were denied.

That picture of him there is so freakin' sad. Imagine what a posthumous visit from Jack for Ennis would be like?

I thought the same thing, too. I was convinced Jack's ashes would be spread on BBM. Then, when Ennis died, he would have his own ashes spread on BBM so that he and Jack could live together in eternity. Of course, that would be a conventional ending. Obviously, this film is not conventional in any way shape or form!

I guess in my mind it went some like this.

Ennis is sitting alone after riding up to Brokeback after finding the 2nd campsite.

Jack, appearing as when Ennis first met him, come  from behind places his hand on his shoulder.

Ennis stands up, startled and frightend, backs away but still holding on to Jacks arm, shaking.

"S'alright Ennis, just came t' see ya. Say goodby till..." Jack takes Ennis, hold him in a tight embrace. "Thanks for bringing the ashes.

Ennis in tears. "Jack I'm so sorry, I wish I was there to save....."

"Shhhhhh....S' ok Ennis. I know you love me more than you can ever say, from when we were here so long ago, the looks in your eyes, how much you been miss'in me now. I know you heart was breaking when you sat on that very hill the day I told we had come down from the mountian, from our home right here just yours and mine, I know what you felt Ennis, same as me. All the years you 'a me been together in the mountians. I love you more than ever I could tell you, for always. When you found the shiirts we wore up here I kept yours closest to my heart and now mine is to yours. You have a lot of years left but know when your grandchildren are grown our time together will be near and it will be just like this, just like this always. I will come to you in your dreams and sometimes when you sleep I will wrap my arms tightly around you, and if you look on the horizon you might see me riding way off in the distance. I will always be alive in your heart Ennis DelMar.

Final tightning of the embrace and gentle release Jack turns begins to walk away and fades into thin air.

Thats how I would see, but it would be more conventional.

Totally agree!  I'm tearing up too reading JP's beautiful posts.  Many people here have great ideas for fantasy scenes.  I love them all!

In the book, it talks about Ennis dreaming of Jack.  I would like to see some of the dreams in the movie.  Also, in the movie, we see Jack's flash back of his happiest moment which is the dozy embrace.  It would be great to have a happy flashback for Ennis as well.  Perhaps put it in the final scene right after he opens the closet door and buttons up the blue shirt.  He would then pause and we would see some clips of them together when they were up on Brokeback Mountain, but this time in his perspective.  Particularly showing a lot of Jack smiling and them laughing and goofing around.  Then continue with the teary eyes and saying "Jack...I swear".

Ennis...Ennis can you hear me? I'm right her beside you bud. I can't ever tell you how much it means that your up here with me in my room. When I was growing up, didn't have no brothers or sisters, no other kids around.. Always had chores after school, no one would come all the way out here to play. The toy rider, the little pickup, nobody's hands on 'm but mine. And now here you are in my room where I lay in my bed at night praying to the Lord to bring me someone so I wouldn't feel so all alone. And he sure answered my prayers bud, that day so many years ago when I first saw you, know 'n  I was a goin' to spend summer with ya, I knew then the Lord gave me Ennis Del Mar, you are  my very best friend, been everything to me, became a man with you that summer. Now don 't ya go worrin' about me always wishin' for what cudd'a' been, I'm save 'n a place for us and we'll be together for always.

Ennis..... could you please look in on my mama from time to time, it been so hard for her, I know you will bud...I know I don't even have' t ask.

One more thing Ennis, if you can hear me, go to the closet, there is something of both of ours together there, you'll know when you see it, take it keep it close, it'll help you through until were together again. I...I love you so very much Ennis.

Beautiful!  I bet that's what Jack would say to Ennis at that moment.  I bet the spirit of Jack will follow Ennis back to his trailer after Ennis took the two shirts.  According to the book, that's when Ennis start dreaming of Jack.

I'm sorry I said  you didn't want a life together, I know that was what you wished for most.  I will always be in you heart Ennis, sometimes I be in your dreams, sometimes I'll hold you when you sleep.. This is so sad.  I wish it would have been like this in the movie.  Sigh.

The situation carries a lot of emotional power, largely because it's so specific and yet undefined. The two guys—cowboys—are in love with each other, but we don't ever quite know if they're in love with each other because they're gay, or if they're gay because they're in love with each other.

This is from an early article about the movie.  I have always wondered about this.  I have always wondered if they were "gay" before Brokeback or if they fell in love and then "decided" they were gay.  I know people who have been "straight" their entire lives, married and then later leave their spouse because they fell in love with another person of the same sex.  One person I know that did this told me that she had never had any thoughts about herself being gay and that she does not think it is something that she felt but kept hidden.  She said she was always attracted to men.  Loved everything about men and met this woman, fell in love and new she could not be without her.  She asked me did that make her gay.  I told her I did not know that I thought it just meant she was lucky that she felt that much love and passion for another person.  She said that she is not attracted to other women just the person she is with.  I have gay men friends that think women are beautiful and sexy but prefer to have relationships with men.

I think Ennis and Jack were gay before they met. Jack because as soon as he sees Ennis outside Aguirre's trailer, before they've ever exchanged words, he appears attracted to him. Ennis because he also seems attracted to Jack fairly quickly. But also in his case, I think there's also a clue in his extreme shyness and repressed behavior: I think he's like that because he had to grow up hiding his sexuality from his homophobic father.

Back to the fantasy scenes. Mark, they are really touching.

I have seen interveiw of Jake G. and he described the film as two staight men falling in love, I am more inclined to go with that and I think Momf2 sumed it up well.

Title: Re: Fantasy Scenes

This is OT but I think these two guys were gay before BBM, if we want to give them labels that is.  We know for sure that Jack was, but Ennis was harder to tell because of repression.  If you live in a repressive society you tend to be forced to follow the norm and you need that special person in a special place that free of judgement to pull you out of your shell and be who you truly are.  IMO, I don't think a gay person can honestly fall in love with the opposite sex and vice versa for a straight person.  If they do, there's another label--bisexual.  "Bi" people can be sexually attracted to one gender and emotionally attracted to the other, or a little of both.  This is from research, not personal experience.  Gay people can get married either by force, persuasion or desperation, but not by personal will.  I think this is what happen to our boys.  Gay men who were repressed to the point where they think they were straight are not uncommon.  They showed Ennis's past for a good reason.

Thanks for posting this fantastic link, Mark. So that's where all the beautiful pictures come from! By the way, looking at those makes me wonder: the postcard in the closet in the last scene isn't the same one that Ennis first receives from Jack in 1967, is it? I'm assuming not, or someone would have mentioned it by now. But I couldn't find a picture of the last scene from that angle.

And by the way, your last post was particularly nice!

These pictures are so amazing. All of them are picturesque, some of them are very very sweet, and others are really sad.

One scene I would've liked to see is the boys separating from a camping trip. I know we saw them come down from Brokeback in 1963 and pack up after their last trip together, so it's not really necessary at all, but I would like to see the emotional toll it took on Jack and Ennis when they returned home.

I agree with you about the leaving. I did describe on of their partings in one of my "Fanfic" stories.

Ennis relaxes at bit enjoying the smooth ride, stretches out on the comfortable cloth bench seat still feeling the warmth and welcome muscle soreness of their steel embrace, now many hours passed back at the lake, each holding on so hard so the other wouldn’t feel him shake, facing away when they finally pulled apart so as not to see the other's tears, yet each knowing both of their faces were wet

 ::)

I would've liked to see more action at the motel scene. It doesn't have to be sex, but some cuddling and kissing. I think it would be nice to see them kissing passionately again, hugging and caressing each other, and on a bed! Also, a little scene with them kissing or something when they were older, would've been nice to watch too. *sigh*

Ennis thinking:

Oh Jack...Jack ya saved our shirts all these years, yours over mine. This is what you wanted me to find. Bet ya didn't think I remember but we was wearin' these same shirts that day we met, I held on ta ya with this blue one that night I came to the tent and ya took my hand and...that next night ya took this one of mine off ah me so carefully askin' me if it was ok, saying s'alright. I promise Jack I will always take care of 'm, only thing I have left of ya. I'm so sorry I punched ya that day, I was just so scared an upset 'bout havin' ta leave early, leaving our home we had on Brokeback. Jack. I never meant ta hurt ya Jack, never would do anything ta cause ya pain, ya always been so good ta me. I wish I had that day back, never wudda let ya go Jack, and mebe just mebe ya would still be here.I didn't mean it when I said leave me be, didn't ever want that, hope ya forgive me. Missing ya awful bad Jack, don't know if I'll ever be goin' ta the mountians again without ya there.

Dear Lord: Be with Jack, treat him special, he deserves it. Tell him how much I loved him, how much I needed him, don't knew if he ever knew. He was the very best fried I ever had. Please Lord let 'm know.

Ennis....Ennis can ya hear me?...Ennis? I know Ennis, I know ya loved me, s'alright. I saw it in your smile when I did that rodeo dance by the campfire, I saw in your eyes when ya came into the tent that night so frightned, I saw it whenever we'd meet squeezing me to tight I'd thought I'da bust, I saw it in your face by our campfire. *sigh*

I was thinking the same thing.  Imagine this scene when Jack is holding Ennis, kissing his hair.  How very sexy, very endearing if Ennis turned toward Jack and Jack gave him a very slow, lazy wink! ;)

Ennis thinking:

Oh Jack...Jack ya saved our shirts all these years, yours over mine. This is what you wanted me to find. Bet ya didn't think I remember but we was wearin' these same shirts that day we met, I held on ta ya with this blue one that night I came to the tend and ya took my hand and...that next night ya took this one of mine off so carefully askin' me if it was ok, saying s'alright.

I know Ennis, I know ya loved me, 'salright. I saw it in your smile when I did that rodeo dance by the campfire, I saw in your eyes when ya came into the tent that night so frightned, I saw it whenever we'd meet squeezing me to tight I'd thought I'da bust, I saw it in your face by our campfire. Ennis has to go back to the post office to sign for a special letter. It reads:

May 15, 1985

Mr. Ennis Del Mar
1800 Hwy 287 #17
Riverton, CO 82501

Dear Mr. Del Mar(Ennis)

We're very sorry it has taken so long to get this letter to you. Jack's estate has been a slow to settle, and I finally did find one of the post cards you had sent with your address, it was in his camping gear. Jack was very fond of you and spoke of you often, I  know you meant an awful lot to him. Being that he was only 39 years old he never got around to writting a will. Jack did say once should any thing happen to see to 'Ennis'. I used to give him a time about driving 14 hours to Wyoming every time to fish, and why you never came to Texas. He said about both of you liking the Big Horn mountians and that he didn't think the pickup you had would make it all the way down to Texas.

-Inside the enclosed envelope you will find a check for $25,000.00. That should buy you a nice new pickup and horse tralier. Jack said you didn't have a trailer of your own and usually had the horses in the bed.

-Also you will find a check for $10,000.00. This is to start a bank account for yourself.

-Jack always told me how proud you were of your two daughters. Jack really loved Bobby and was a good father to him. Somehow I know you were a good example in this regard. Please find two checks of $5,000.00 each to use as you see fit for your daughters welfare.

Please accept these, I know it is what Jack would want.

Also enclosing a few photos of Jack you might like to have, one I took of his rodeo ridding days not long after he met you, a family picture with myself and Bobby, and a couple of others.

Hope this letter find you well and if there is anything more we can do for you please don't hesitate to write. If you ever find yourself in Childress, Texas please look us up.

  Sincerely Mrs. Lureen N. Twist

Actually if Jack did leave a will I bet he would have left Ennis at least this much and enough to get him started on a ranch of his own.

I have no doubt; perhaps even more.  Maybe he'll leave everything he ever owned to his beloved Ennis.  I can picture Ennis owning personal items like Jack's black hat, the jacket Jack wore up on Brokeback, and his trucks.  More memories for Ennis to live on.

Wouldn't have been cool if on the the day of the reunion scene they show Jack getting in his Red/white truck long before daylight in Childress, getting on the hwy,  few hours later seeing the sun rise to the east as his truck eats up the road, eating sandwiches out of his metal lunch box so he won't have to stop, coffee out of thermos, flashing back to Ennis waiting for him, back to Jack making his way through Colorado, pensive look on his face ( if he only knew ), back to Ennis chain smoking, back to Jack  a few hours later, road signs to Wyoming thru windshield bitting his nails, then lighting a smoke with the truck lighter, Ennis asleep on couch (etc.)

That would have been a perfect part for a flashback to the rest of the night in the Second Tent Scene.

God to Jack:

See that fellow of there? He's the answer to your prayes, all those times you prayed on your knees in your room so you would feel all alone, he belongs to you Jack. He's skittish and scard so be gentle with him, don't ever hurt him. Remember you belong to him too.

I'm really loving your ongoing ruminations, jpwagoneer1964. Lots of really good insights into the characters, and nice doses of humor to boot.

On this one here, you got me thinking about something that had never occurred to me before. Ennis and Jack might have seen each other as potential rivals for employment outside that Signal trailer. Even with the possible attaction both men felt for one another even then (possible for Ennis, even more likely for Jack), they might have been sizing each other up for far less libidinous reasons. Thanks for introducing me to this idea!

In the book it leads you to believe that Jack was up alone the previous year. "Both enjoying the company of the other where none was expected."

There is NO WAY they thought of each other as rivals...in the short story, it says "They came together on paper as camp tender" and "sheep herder."

besides, it's only ENNIS that's being standoffishl Jack is, er..friendly (tto say the least).

Very good point--that nuance had evaded me previously. And that would explain why Aguirre came down so hard on Jack for the loss of the sheep due to the lightning strike; there might have been no one else to (unfairly) blame.

Right--I meant to refer to the possible implications of how the scene plays out in the film alone; in the story, there would have been no undercurrent of competition, though we do learn that both boys had not expected company on the mountain.

Very cute JP!  Sometimes I imagine to myself that after the "Jack, I swear" scene, Ennis would wake up and realize that the entire 20 years was just a dream in the TS1.  Jack is still young, alive and well, and Ennis would have a second chance at making a better decision.  If only.

A very warm welcome to the board. Glad you enjoy this thread. Some are very serious (sad). On the lighter side you will find the more humurous part of Jack and Ennis sometimes Heath and Jake in Photo Captions.

JPWagoneer, bless you for coming up with this. I have been slowly digesting this entire wonderful thread and this one (it goes with a shot from the end of the lake fight scene) just stops me in my tracks every time. I think that scene is miraculous, but since I first saw it I had a need - it actually feels like a need, not a wish - to have Jack go that little bit further in his comforting of Ennis. Ennis is coming apart at the seams. He is having the emotional meltdown of his life, percipitated by his feelings for Jack, and the only way he can move from this crisis point/ moment of reckoning is if Jack helps him through it. Your lines ring true and make me just that little bit surer of Jack's absolute support and love... this is beautiful, really beautiful.

Beautiful.  I read the story A Better Idea.  It really gives you a whole new perspective.  To me this is one of the most gut wrenching scenes in the movie.  Every time I see it, if I am not crying, I think of the old saying "You don't know what you got till its gone."  So sad, but so true.  I love your postings.  So emotional.

This shot is, to me, the key moment of the entire film. You see Ennis's entire life story written on his face here.

Some folks may not think so but Ah thought Jack wife was real nice ta me. Hope'n it was a mistake at the post office 'n all an she talk'd ta me real polite 'n all, told me what happened. Didn't say what it cudda been, not wantin' ta upset me. Ah think she knew 'bout Jack 'n me, he never was one not ta let on, an she still was real nice, didn't mind talkin' ta me at all. Jack was lucky

Lotta folks thought that this wuz the last nite we spent together on that 1983 trip, but it wasn't. As I recall it wuz the second. Jack and me we always got caught up on each others goin's on by the second or third nite. Ah felt so bad when Jack said that he missed me so much, couldn't tell 'm just them that Ah wasn't gonna be here in August, couldn' t say nothin' just then, thought Ah might start bawlin' right then 'n there. Miss Jack so much sometimes...more than Ah can ever say....

Some Folks thought that our long faces an tense manner were cuz we wuz cross with each other an only happen'd on that last trip. Wuzn't so, we wuz always upset bout leavin'on the last day of bein' together from the very first time we met up again after Brokeback, both all torn up inside, but I wuz never mad at Jack or he at me. Evey time since we met again, just before we'd drive away Jack an me grab on and hold each other so hard we the other wouldn't feel him shakin', just stay like that long as we needed. Then when we'd ease apart we'd lookaway not sayin' a word so not ta show the tears a rollin' off our faces, but each knew they wuz there, then climb inta our pickups till next time.

Some folks might think things wern't right between me 'n Jack on that last trip cuz they  didn't see those last private moments 'tween us. Ah was always scart ta start bawlin' front of Jack, but he kepy sayin' 's alright, held on ta me tight, told me ta hang on ta him long as I wanted, it's aright ta cry. Didn't matter none ta him at all. Wouldn't let go till long time later, made sure I was ok, said we'll be together again in November. No we left as good as always...even better...Long ride back ta Riverton

Took a look long time ta get back ta Riverton, drove the whole way with my hand in the paper bag touchin' the shirts...from me an Jack's days at Brokeback. Wuz late, no traffic ta worry me none. Guess Jack didn't have hardly no one else around growin' up, no brothers or sisters, way out middle of nowhere, must'a been hard. Sure gonna a miss Jack, nothin' be the same without him...but it feels real good I knowed him so long.

I love this.  Look how tight Jack is holding on.  His fingers are dug down in Ennis' back.  Nuckles kind of white.  Hanging on for dear life, afraid to let go.

Some folks thought I was disappointed at Ennis fer not sayin' nothin' after I told how much I miss him. Didn't expect him ta say anything, just wanted ta let 'm know is all. No one ever saw what went on next. Could tell Ennis had somethin' on his mind though, just staring straight ahead, found out later it was that he couldn't make August, couldn't tell me just then, knew that'd  make me upset. He was right 'bout that. Never had no doubts how Ennis felt 'bout me, know how hard it was fer him ta untangle himself and walk inta the tent that night so long ago back at Brokeback, went against everthin' he knew. Still not easy fer him, I know what it means that he sees me whenever he can..

They wuz gonna put this in the film 'bout when Ah stopped at the Twists graveyard but Ah guess folks would feel awful sad already. Ah did to, but I wouldn't ever trade any of the time Ah time Ah spent with Jack, two mostly three weeks a year fer spendin' all my weeks with anyone else. Ah know Jack wouldn't neither.

Sometimes when Ah'm here at the ranch round the cattle 'n horses tryin'ta do my job, somethin' happens an I just start thinkin' 'bout Jack. Start bawlin' so bad Ah can't stop, tears start spillin' off ah my face right ta the ground. Never missed no one so much, not even my mama er my dad, hardly see my sister, would never remember what K.E. even look like if Ah didn't see his face in my mirror. An Ah don't even know if Ah'll ever get ta see Jack again.

He looks scared to me.  Could it be because now he knows that someone else knows their secret.  His mind is probably going a million miles a minute trying to think of how he is going to find his Ennis.

A fantasy scene for me would be a longer scene with the two guys hugging or holding each other as older men. When they are like 39, they show very little love, and it makes me mad. I wanted an 'old' sex scene too. It would of been better than an extended motel scene, because we would of seen just how much love they still had!

for me, the scene I most wished for everytime I viewed the film was a face to face meeting between Lureen and Ennis.

Once Ennis' request to obtain Jack's ashes from Jack's parents was rejected, I had hope Ennis would have gone to Lureen to seek her urn of ashes (even though she had said it was buried...perhaps it could have been dug up). I really wanted a follow up to Lureen's subtle and nearly missed but utter emotionally reaction to Ennis' admission that '....we spent a summer on BBM, back in 63". She connected some dots, but we never truly know what was on her mind. I'd love to see Ennis knock on her door on day and introduce himself.

the idea of jack's insurance policy and how Ennis would act having received it is a nice way to see Ennis go on, and a nice way to know how Jack 'took care' of him.

but, it is interesting how it seems money and its uses ever so frequently (always?) endsup a solution to our issues. Good or bad, right or wrong, the old dollar trumps the pure humanness all to often.

-Several shirts you should get good use out of, take the ones to Goodwill you don't want.
-Two pairs of cowboy boots.
Jack thought an a lot of you and spoke very well of you. Hope the letter finds you well and please give my regards to your family. If there is anyting I can do for you please let me know.

I don't like jack's mustache. makes him  looking old.

Boss is not around and i am corrupting office internet to dive in betterMost. gotta explain my co-workers why tears shed on the paperwork...erasing the signatures

I see it now that day ya got that first postcard, how excited you were to pack for a trip, I see it now when ya dream of me, I see how much your missing me now Ennis. You found the shirts Ennis, most valuable thing I'd ever owned were those two shirts, yours and mine, no fancy truck or house could ever take their place. I know they mean the same to you, keep them close ta remember those days we had on Brokeback,I know you'll take care of 'm. Ennis it's really me in your dreams, don't worry they won't never stop, and sometimes when you sleep you'll feel my arms around you tight, may face against yours, just like when we were together. Be ah watching over you Ennis, till were dancing together in heaven. Ennis ....Ennis Del Mar know this, you were loved more that ya can ever know, take that with you always, get ya through the years ahead, look back and remember the joy. Ennis I could  never quit you, never. Never meant to say it, hope ya forgive me. You Ennis will always be my cowboy.

This is probably one of the hardest scenes to watch.  It kills my heart.  Ennis loves Jack so much and wants to be with him.  I truly believe this.  He is just so scared of what could happen.  So extremely sad.  I can remember hugging my sister in that grip of desperation when our oldest sister was killed in a car wreck when I was 19 and my sister was 22.  My sister that died was only 25.  It is the hug of holding on for dear life.

Momo,

i am very sorry to hear that. i have a sister as well and i thnak God for every day i see her growing up. hope she has a long joyous life.

i'd like to see more scenes during the 16 years Jack and Ennis see each other. you know, just more acts of endearments,..plays, togetehrness, smiles, gestures... small things that shows how they were and how those rounds can last FOR 16 years.

i couldn't get enough.

JPwagoneer, do you know why they make the 4 July scene?

Me 'n Jack...we hardly never said no words at all 'bout what went on between us. When we wuz workin' together, just friendly talk is all. If someone wuz ta hear us talk they wouldn't think anything at tall. Then when we' could we'd just...get on with things. Sure glad of that.

Jack thinking: Sure miss Ennis when he's up there with the sheep at night. Be nice havin' him keepin' me warm in the tent, wouldn't feel lonesome.

"Somethin' on yer mind there Jack?"

"Naw, nothin' at all."

Ennis thinking: To bad Mr Agguire say one of us has ta stay up with the sheep at night. Wouldn't mnid stayin' here at camp with Jack...Yep, wouldn't mind ah bit.

But Ah felt real good after, just sittin' close... real quiet Didn't hav'ta say nothin' more. Sat like that a long time...'n Jack stayed ta ride back ta camp with me.

My favorite would have to be the scene where Jack gets Ennis's postcard that says "You Bet" Can't out see the smile on his face and the look in his eyes?

My fantasy scene is this, Jack somehow makes  it to the chuch and crashes Ennis's wedding to Alma, breaking out in a chorus of  And I Am Telling You, like he did on SNL! ( minus the dress of course!) . He would'nt wanna frighten anybody, just stop Ennis from making the biggest mistake of his life. Well it's a fantasy right? Alma attacks Jack and Jack fights her off calling her a old sweater wearin, slip showin, lowdown manstealer.!!!!  As they roll around on the floor, !Ennis faints dead away  and is carried out by his best man and that creepy preacher. Hee Hee! ;D ;D

My fantasy scene would be John Twist never MENTIONING Randall (or whoever he was) to Ennis.   To me then Ennis could REALLY feel 'a (true enough) love that will never grow old.'   Always hated John Twist for saying it but I guess it needs to be there to let Ennis know that it was indeed a tire iron...  Wish Annie Proulx had come up with something to COMFORT Ennis when he's hurting so badly.   Jack's mom really helps as best as can be had.

That comment from John Twist must have hurt Ennis so bad...  It really tears me up.

Though I'm not sure it lets Ennis KNOW it was a tire iron as much as it makes him BELIEVE it was a tire iron (we still don't know for sure, IMO!).

Well, she did! And she hung it in the closet upstairs!  :'( :)

Well said.
However, thinking about it, Did that comfort him or add to his pain?
I know it broke my heart when I saw the scene. :'(

I always thought when she said "I kept it like it was, when he was a boy"  she was saying to Ennis, if you
find the shirts, know it was him that put them in there, and kept them.  And it was always you that he loved, and I knew it, and let be.

The bittersweet answer to that question is that is does both.  & if that scene doesn't break your heart then you haven't got a heart.

many times now, when i rewatch the movie, i stop until the reunion.

i stop the time there. because moving forward is still so painful.

if just Ennis had the courage to drop everything and snatch Jack from his all-settled-Texas life, and run somewhere, just hold it and hide together until a couple more years when homosexual couples can  be accepted ... it wouldn't have been this tragic.

At that time in their lives their children would have paid too big a price.
