I think the two sets of terms developed in isolation on different boards, and now that the populations of those boards are mingling, the terminology is shifting. (The 21s century version of major world languages shifting in accordance with human migration patterns.)
Personally, I prefer TS1 and TS2, partly because they have that cool movie-ish look, like a Mission Impossible title, and partly because I'm tempted to mentally pronounced FNIT and SNIT as if they were just capitalized words, and snit actually IS a word, and one that does not fnit -- I mean, fit the mood of the scene.
But let's see what the majority of us prefer!

And, Barbara, yes let's resolve "the lake scene" while we're at it.

I’ve seen some use of “FTS” and “STS” but those give me fits and starts.

When this is decided, can we have a glossary/terminology thread? I’d like to see resolution of “Final lake scene” vs. “Last scene together” vs. “The argument by the lake.”

It's interesting to see what terminology people prefer. For example, I think whether you call it "prayer of thanks" scene or "sweet life" scene or "Earl story" scene can be a good barometer of how you interpret larger issues in the movie as a whole.

I've always called them 'Tent Scene 1' and 'Tent Scene 2' in my head. I didn't see the FNIT/SNIT abbreviations until I was exposed to the DC forum and it didn't stick with me...too much like the words FIT and SNIT.
It is interesting to think of how we refer to these things. Even if it's not what I call it, I always seem to know what someone's talking about. For me, the 'lake scene' is the final Jack/Ennis scene. And the 'prayer of thanks' scene is either just that or the 'campfire after the reunion' scene.

I have been used to using FNIT and SNIT, but I'm happy ta switch with ya, makes no never-mind ta me. Just wanna be con-sistent. ;D

I've just been calling them Tent Scene #1 and Tent Scene #2.
TS1 and TS2 are much easier though, so I'm going to start using those.

You native English speakers gave me a hard time pondering about what FNIT and SNIT could mean the first time I read it ::), whereas TS1 and TS2 were immediately clear for me.
But apart from that, I prefer TS1 and TS2. Partly because I'm used to them and partly for the same reasons Kathererine and Lynne mentioned. FNIT and SNIT are too close to actual words.

I assume they are First Night in Tent (FNIT) and Second Night in Tent (SNIT). Please correct me if it's wrong.

I feel a bit lame, but I know I usually spell things out... "First tent scene", "second tent scene" and I guess "third tent scene" (which usually gets discussed in a very different context from the first two). I agree that "FTS" and "STS" don't look right. Of the option in the poll, I'd also chose TS1, etc.
FNIT and SNIT always remind me of telephone company names (which actually is sort of endearing).

Sorry, I guess I should have offered "completely spelled out" as an option. I do figure that some scenes referred to a lot the deserve a shorthand -- especially since everyone here is so familiar with the movie (and some of us are especially familiar with those two scenes! ::)).

In saving my photos, I used (spontaneously, 1T1002, 2T001, cmer. 1T3001 I think the DC terminology (FNIT, SNIT) is the clearest. These are just the order i saved them in, and make sense only to me, here presented in chronological order of events. cmer blows up real nice. Well, they're not in chronological order anymore, cause i was trying to figure iout what happpoened to Jack in 1T3001--and I can't figure out where he went. He used to be there...

It's amazing how after a day (many days!) of endlessly discussing the most detailed aspects of the film in an abstract or analytical way, those photos remind me of the actual concrete movie and are still so thrilling! Even the one that I use as my avatar and therefore see dozens of times a day.

Agreed, in the awesomeness of these photos. It's so nice to see them right in a row like that. I guess b/c of my IMDb "upbringing," I'll always think of them as first tent scene and second tent scene, but I can go with the shorthand TS1 and TS2. The other acronynms are strange to me, and I really don't like them, actually.

Amanda, reading the above, first I gave a small, Ennis-like smile of recognition at the Brokieism used, then realized that "don't" now feels weird as a plural in that usage. :)

LOL, yup, I was aware of the Brokieism hidden in that sentence as I was writing it... even if it is the correct plural in that case. Funny how Brokieisms are so often linked to wacky grammar.

That's why it's so difficult to slip them into ordinary conversation. I have far less problem with the swear words (for some reason, nobody seems too surprised by that ::)). But when I use "ain't," or don't match my subject and verb, or say "them days," I feel about as natural as I would wearing a cowboy hat. And boots. And a Wrangler shirt. And carrying a 30-30.
But their subversiveness is part of the fun, hunh?
