Post by: JennyC on July 01, 2006, 12:01:41 am
I am sure many people who read this section of BetterMost are already fans of Somebody New by Jenna Hilary Sinclair.  This is just to give the people who are not aware of this fan fiction a chance to read it.  This story is not to be missed.  You are lucky that you don't have to go through the agony of waiting for updates any more.  Last chapter is posted today and the story is complete.  :)

http://jennasts.livejournal.com/ (http://jennasts.livejournal.com/)
The story started on March 28th, 2006.

UPDATE:
“Force of Nature” is the sequel to “Somebody New”.  Jenna started posting the sequel on August 25th, 2006.

Hey folks......guess what me and Jenna have been cooking up....!!

A new LJ community for fans and readers of the BBM A/U novel Somebody New by Jenna  is now open at http://community.livejournal.com/somebodynew_j4e/. (http://community.livejournal.com/somebodynew_j4e/.)

Everybody is welcome to join in and see what’s going on!  We’re opening the community with a short story challenge based on a few lines from the novel.  We’re hoping that you will also be interested in participating in general Brokeback Mountain discussion and a thread on writing that Jenna hopes to start in a few days, along with other types of challenges we have in mind.  The entire novel is archived on the site, definitely the best place to read it for those who haven’t done so yet.  Please stop by and say hello.

Just want to let all Somebody New fans know that Jenna is planning a sequel to the story!  :)

The announcement can be found under the LJ community for Somebody New (Helen provided the link above).  Here is a copy of the post.

Schedule for Sequel to Somebody New
Since a few people have asked me, I thought I'd lay out my hopes for writing the sequel to Somebody New. I hate to think that folks might be checking my LJ or the Somebody New Community on a regular basis looking for something new from me. It's better if you have a date in mind!

I am hoping to start writing the sequel to Somebody New,

which will be a novel called Force of Nature, the week of August 13, right after I come back from the Brokeback Backyard Barbecue. I hope to *post* the results from those first writing sessions sometime during the week of August 20, probably later in the week. The first posting will be an introductory, short piece immediately followed by chapter one.

I do hope to post a chapter at a time, or maybe two chapters at a time if the rhythm of the piece demands it, as was sometimes the case for Somebody New. Force of Nature looks to be another substantial novel, although different in pace and tone than SN. I would be surprised if it did not go longer than SN, too. I do have a definite ending for it in mind, along with extensive notes and outlines -- which will undoubtedly change as the story develops. And, I guess I can say that the novel will cover a few months and will start in the summer of 1984, so just a few months after the ending of SN.

There! That's all for now. I can't wait to get back into Jack and Ennis's world again. Thanks so much for your interest!

I just hope it doesn't turn out as a soap, seeing that it is over 20 chapters long...

**Slight spoilers for first few chapters**

Quote

No it doesn't. It's very, very good throughout, very close to equalling the quality of "If I asked".  It's also interesting to note the difference between Amy's and Jenna's characterization of Jack and Ennis. Amy's boys are 23 years old. Jenna's are close to 40. The two writers do manage to convey that difference in ages just as well as Jake and Heath portrayed it, I think. The younger Jack is much more immediate quicksilver, the younger Ennis slightly more given to demonstrating his "panic" and distress related to his relationship with a man. Older Ennis is better able to hide it although those same feelings are still ruling his life at the outset of the fic and as he works through becoming "somebody new". Their older selves are more considered, more reflected, more deliberate in words and actions - not as jaunty......they demonstrate more life experience in the way they're written, the way they speak, the way they behave.

I think Jenna did an absolutely outstanding job. The scene where Jack quits Ennis and Ennis's subsequent behaviour are so well-written I could just see it happen in front of my eyes. Most subsequent scenes had me on  tenterhooks during the ups and downs of the renewed and developing relationship.  My only gripe about "Somebody New is one OC whose characterization vacillates far too much, IMO, - evidently adapted along the way based on the significant and strong reader feedback Jenna was getting as she was writing.

Jenna's going to write a sequel in a month's time as has been noted here and I'll sure be there.  :)

This one is definitely in my top favourite 3 BBM fics. The other two are Amy's "If I asked" and Jenny's "When the Snow didn't come".

Yeah, I liked that last one too (it seems like I have read more stories than I can remember ;)), it was different, a very associative way of writing

I liked Jenny's "When the snow didn't come".  I will also recommend another one of Jenny's BBM fanfic "Big Boots of Pain", which can be found here http://bbm.supersolenoid.it/Big_Boots_of_Pain/1a.html (http://bbm.supersolenoid.it/Big_Boots_of_Pain/1a.html).  It's one of the earlier BBM fanfics when there weren't as many as we have today.  Big Boots of Pain and Human Interest really helped me dealing with my BBM blue in those earlier days.

I started a couple of fan fics, liked the beginnings but kind of lost interest toward the end. I really liked Somebody New and am glad to know Jenna has more fiction and more to come! I thought Ennis's reaction to being "quit" was very plausible, in fact that's one of the things I liked is that she didn't resort to being melodramic and the story felt plausible. I hesitate to mention my puny one-page scene on LJ but it's under coffeecat33. There is some action behind the scenes that I felt happened and I am putting it on paper. Don't think I have the time, patience, energy & talent to develop a whole story in an AU, but rather want to fill in some gaps. Thanks for the story, Jenna. I really appreciated it and will look for the others.

Now I gotta quit this board & go to work in the "real" world! cc33

Hiya everyone, I will be reading the last chapter of somebody new tonight or tomorrow morning (depends on how sleepy I am once my head makes contact with my pillow). I am so glad I started reading this, the title always stopped me, but this is very well-written and it had me on the edge of my seat several times. There was just one dialogue that I did not find very credible....

SPOILER.....

and that's the one between Gary and Ennis during them moving Jack back into his house, there was something about that dialogue that did not ring true, anybody else have that?
Title: Re: Somebody New (by Jenna Hilary Sinclair) is complete
Post by: Mikaela on August 17, 2006, 05:16:39 am
**spoiler**

Gary was the character I wasn't too pleased about throughout. I thought his characterization was uneven, he came out as too much of a plot device to me, less the real breathing human being. He's a nice guy when that fits the plot, a nasty guy when that fits it, he's moving on easily but with a few sarcasms when he's no longer needed, plot-wise. I think it would have served the story better if he'd been portrayed as a relatively nice guy throughout, a contrast to Ennis in many ways but likable. Ennis still could have been just as filled with jealousy at the thought of him. That J&E have to inflict hurt on others in order for them to be together is nothing new, it's something they have to live with in the original story as it is. I think it would have served Somebody New better if that had been a consistent theme in connection with Gary - that he was genuinely invested in Jack and that we truly got to believe that and feel a little bit bad on his behalf over us wanting him gone from the J&E equation - and feel (more) sorry for him when he had to accept defeat.

That said, there's so much good to enjoy in SN that I don't want to dwell on any little imperfections. Many of the scenes had me biting nails. The tire-changing scene in the rain outside Childress..... OMG! I was at the edge of my seat while reading it. Loved it that the scene didn't play out with a big battle, Ennis saving the day and all, but instead we were left with the ambiguity in Ennis's emotions: Ennis never knowing for sure what would have happened, what he would have, could have done if things had played out more dramatically........that he finds a way to live with the fact that he didn't act the immediate saveing-the-day hero like in his daydreams, that he *almost* couldn't manage to step up to Jack there and be seen as Queer by the world of dangerous homophobes. But at the end of the day he *did* step up.  :)

Hi Jim, how are you doing, are you enjoying Bettermost? I ' saw' you last on the Lead me to your door thread. Are you also impatiently awaiting a new chapter of that? Thanks for that link to Big Boots of Pain. Did you like it?  I think I need to print it and read it.

Hi,
Yes I am enjoying exploring around on Bettermost.  Lead Me to Your Door started fan fic for me after a friend of mine got me involved. She was the same one who brought me to see BBM and subsequently changed my world.
I'm enjoying the story immensly and like you, can't wait for Saturday for the latest.
I also read Somebody New by Jenna and thought it was really good. What a wonderful alternate ending, even though angst ridden but the end result brought a tear to my eye. I also heard Jenna will be updating next month and am looking forward to that.
I'm reading Big Boots of Pain now and also If I Asked and like both of those as well.
There are quite a few really good writers here, I'm glad to see that, and even more glad that a lot of good folks have the same wish as I do, that Jack and Ennis are together and happy.
Thanks for asking,

Jim

I'm very much looking forward to this one too.  :)

It appears Jenna's got the plot and timeline of this whole sequel blocked out and based on Somebody New I completely trust she has an engaging story to tell with momentum, direction and a point to it, - one that develops the J/E relationship further and makes us love her J&E even more. I'm very curious to see where she takes this, as I don't think the end of SN immediately lent itself to a novel-length sequel, but much rather to little disconnected "short-story" glimpses, separate scenes in their new life.  Of course Jenna will prove how limited my imagination is!

Well, I threw myself at it right away and having just finished the entire chapter I can safely say that this truly was something to look forward to. Great chapter, drawing the reader right in, good build-up and story development, very realistic (no fairy tale being told here!) and getting very intense as the one day/night it covers progresses. Had me at the utmost edge of my seat!

Good to read a chapter from Jack's POV - loved the early part where he's getting introspective about his life and current situation and his relationship with Ennis.

I have to read the whole thing again, and soon.

And now, of course, there are various "What happens now" questions that make me simply yearn for the next chapter.

Yup, I tend to think this is some of the strongest writing I've seen in fanfic (I mean this sequel and Somebody New).  I like the idea of shifting points of view around... Alma Jr. at the very beginning, Ennis and now Jack.  It keeps things fresh.  It will be hard to wait for the update (as usual).

We have a competition going on over on the Somebody New LJ Community - "What's in the Bag?"

Prize for correctly guessing the little extra Jack brought Ennis back from Kansas City :)

Linkee here: http://community.livejournal.com/somebodynew_j4e/21745.html (http://community.livejournal.com/somebodynew_j4e/21745.html)

Guesses are screened, and everyone who guesses correctly will receive a prize from Jenna.  If there are no correct guesses, prize goes to best near guess.

Yes I completly agree with you there. It,s very similar in style to AP,s writing. IMO it deserves the same recognition, I really honestly think it,s that good. My fanzine of SN arrived a couple of days ago. All I can say is, WOW!! :o :o :o  Jenna does work very hard on her writing, it must really take it out of her. Yeah, the zine is AWESOME is it not!  God, the artwork!  My god!

And the continued quality of Jenna's writing, especially since she is belting out a hell of a lot of words in such a short space of time, is like nothing else.

My one disappointment is that there are so few artists (using whatever medium) in the BBM fandom.  I wish there were more.  Jenna would have liked there to be more art in the zine, I know. We must have some talented souls somewhere!  I mean, there are so many writers around...and the quality there is so hig...where are all the peeps with drawing and painting talents hiding?

Yes the artwork is absolutly AWSOME!! :o :o I agree with you, more would have been nice lol. ;) And yes, she is belting out a hell of a lot in such  a short space of time. She is very dedicated, we are lucky to have her. Oh btw  welcome to Bettermost..I see your fairly new. Enjoy your stay. :) :)

I'm so looking forward to the next chapter of FoN!
Jenna's Jack and Ennis are so real, so visible, I feel I can just reach my hand out and touch them. The ups-and-downs and give-and-take as these two by now mature men, with their personality quirks and more or less ingrained habits, form their lives around their love together: It's described with realism, care and a warm heart.  :)

**speculation**

I'm worried about that truck Ennis just bought. It seems a fair bet that it's been used in illegal activity (smuggling of ....something?) and that's why it was so important to get it sold at once. I think the story this unpleasant Corliss fellow came up of having used it helping refugees was just a ruse.

If the car becomes involved as evidence in some kind of criminal investigation, if the law starts taking an interest in Ennis as a consequence - even just for a little while till things have been cleared up - that would be such a strain on Ennis, I don't know how he'd get through it. Lots of people knowing who he's living with, perhaps he'd have to give formal statements where that would come up, even..... He's come so far, but that might send him back in full panicked hedgehog mood for a while.

I'm bearing in mind that this section of the fic is termed "earthquake". I'm worried for Ennis and Jack as to what exactly that earthquake will be. But I trust Jenna to bring them through it together, of  course.

I know Jenna said she'd not post predictions as to when the next chapter(s) would be up, since she's had to delay several times in the past. But that means we've got no clue whether a new chapter might be expected soon...

Whether near or still some time off, I'd just like to say I'm reeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaally looking forward to the next chapter of FoN. I hope it'll be here soon! I'm experiencing increasingly severe withdrawal symptoms.  ::)  Looking forward to enjoying more of Jenna's high-quality perceptive writing, and to learning whether Ennis is wrong in his morose predictions about his job security......

Seems I've got this thread completely to myself, but that isn't going to stop me!

FoN just got updated with a long and thorough chapter called Shootin' True, with lots of plot and character development. To say that I was riveted to my seat and lost to the world while turning pages as fast as I could while reading through it all, would be a monumental understatement. It's just so good - Jenna's simply outdone herself. I don't know where to begin and end with the happy delighted comments, so I'll just let be. But I'll be re-reading this more than once for sure, toes curling with pure fic-reading glee.  :)

I have heard dramatic announcements like this before from authors of fanfiction. What could possibly have happened? I know, we shouldn't speculate but I am just curious, what would make you take down hours and hours worth of writing?

I had the same reaction... I don't know what could have happened? And this may be a stupid question but does this mean she won't be continuing with Force of Nature because I might not be able to handle that... I love that fic  :'(

I just saved all of it to a word document.

What would be a reason for taking everything down you have worked so hard on? I just don't get it! Frankly, it annoys the hell out of me that we don't know what's going on. I know, it's none of my business and I hope it's nothing too serious for Jenna, that would be awful, but still it bugs me.

I haven't finished the last installment of FON and I don't think I will now, I don't want to continue reading something that is not going to be continued. Maybe somebody can volunteer to continue the story? Mandy? Louise? Amy? Anybody?

I wish we knew what was going on too... any explaination, even something vague like "real life is getting me down" or something would be better than knowing nothing. I honestly can't even begin to think of what would make someone not only stop writing but erase everything that has already been posted...

It's driving me nuts!! But I know that feeling will only last a few days, I really anticipate that I will have gotten over it by then. This was not one of my favorite ff's and I had no clear idea of where she was going with FON, but I really did like her style of writing. Hopefully she will use her talent for other writing.

I did read on another board that someone had spoken to Jenna and her health is fine, everyone in her family is fine, no deaths. etc. So, in that regard, things are good. However, there was no other information about why Jenna had made this decision.

If I learn more, I will post here.

Yes, please do.  A community so well established and so very well beloved vanishing like Atlantis is bound to set up shock waves throughout the fandom.  I'd be very interested to hear the reason behind Jenna pulling her immensely popular fic and its sequel from all public forums.  My first notice was when she wrote to let me know she'd be taking down the chapters from BBM_Phoenix and I was so saddened to think of this classic not being available in our archive.  However, Jenna would not, or could not, give any indication of why.  I'll be checking back for news.

Well that was my reaction too. I mean, whatever it is, if her health etc is ok, which was what I first thought of, then it must be a very personal reason. However, she wasnt even half way through the story. There was so much more to do. I shant bother to save any of it, there seems little point now. Very sad indeed. I,m only glad I bought SN on zine. I wonder if that will still be avaliable to anyone who wants to buy it? What a shame. Jenna is a superb writer as well. Oh well, if you read this Jenna, I wish you well. Ty for giving us SN. I continue to read it from time to time. tc Jenna.xx

I imagine she has a great number of fans and readers wondering and confused, and I am sure that this is difficult for her.  I know of a couple of other instances where authors deleted forum accounts, friended or deleted their LJ's, or left a community in a sudden fashion, and in all of these cases it was a conflict with another individual community member over criticism or the content of one of their stories, which clearly, is not really anyone's business but the parties involved.  However, when a personal conflict with a reader, beta, or other author occurs, it can lead to a lot of speculation and hurt feelings, taking sides, etc, and the only way to avoid that is for one of the parties (or both) to retreat quietly and say nothing about it.  Some remove all of their fics, others provide pdf or doc copies through their readers and circulate them privately.

Depending upon the circumstances, asking questions or speculating about what really happened can lead to compounding the original problem. If Jenna wants to let people know, I am sure she will post something for her fans and readers at some point, and it is probably appropriate to wish her the best and leave it alone.

Just to let you all know...I will be deleting all posts on the Somebody New Community except the novel chapters at 9pm GMT onwards on Wednesday evening.  GMT is 5 hours ahead of Eastern Time and 8 hours ahead of Pacific.  Jenna will then delete her posts that evening (she is in Central Time) and I will be deleting the community as a whole on Thursday morning GMT.

I know we are all devastated at the loss of Jenna's fiction, however there are still some excellent stories, artwork and fanmixes on the community that you may want to have one last look at also before they leave their collective home.

I hate these dramatic announcements!  :(

"Somebody New" saved my sanity-I LOVE that story. I was apprehensive about a sequel but now that I've had a taste of it, I want it all. Jenna isn't a member here I don't think-does anyone know her well enough to invite her to our safe haven? I respect her need to sever her contacts, I just don't like to see it done with her in a painful place. She has given so many of us so much joy, she deserves to go out with the love and appreciation we feel for her.

Damn and damn damn.

ok peeps, here is the info I have gleaned from the font of all knowledge Fanfic, aka Dave Cullen Forum.  The theory is that it is legal BS that is the cause of this catastrophe:

//snip....................................//snip

I had to remove the quote that was here, if you want to read it just go to the Dave Cullen site, here is a link directly to the quote in question:

http://davecullen.com/forum/index.php?topic=14995.msg606451#msg606451 (http://davecullen.com/forum/index.php?topic=14995.msg606451#msg606451)

(this is the same link as in my following post)

it all makes perfect sense to me.   :'( :'( :'(   and I am glad that it was not in-fighting between BBM slash writers that was the cause of this....  although Jenna is such a nice lady, I can't imagine who would take umbrage at her or her fine story.

ok, third and final post on this subject.  If you want to find out what's going on about this f'n disaster, you can go to the DC Forum, here is a link to the thread "Slash - Discussion and Recommendations. Part 4"  (you have to be a member, logged on, to access this board):

I only read the three following pages after that link/post, and it pretty much explains what probably happened.  It also talks about the possibility of seeing the continuation of Force of Nature, eventually, we hope!

Sadly true.  I'm thankful someone thought enough of me to send a copy as a gift when it was first available.  Some said this morning at another forum that the 'zine is now destined to be a part of BBM history because of this seeming ban, and I think that's probably true.  It will become as prized as a copy of the shooting script if it's no longer available.  Some things become even stronger when they're suppressed.  Hope that's the case here.

ok, for those who are still wondering what happened to cause Jenna to take down her stories, the general concensus is that is was legalities that caused this.  Someone or somebody brought Jenna's zine to the attention of the Big Heads, and the lawyers sent out a Cease and Desist order.  All because she printed her first story in a zine.

I have been told I cannot directly quote someone from the other board (Dave Cullen)  so you would be getting first-hand information if you go over there and read the story at its source, rather than my interpretation.

There really is no reason to speculate this.  Jenna is no stranger to the fanzines, and her story is published in the same venues as other stories.  If she were asked to take her story down, she would not be "gagged" from saying so.  It is far more likely, as I mentioned above, that a personal matter that is nobody's business in the fandom, has affected her and she is taking the high road and not dragging it into the community.  As a moderator of Fan Fiction I consider it a gesture of respect to her to not speculate that she is the subject of legal action unless she says so.  If you are registered at Davecullen.com she posted a message there this morning thanking people for their offers of support and assuring them that she needs nothing more from them at this time.  It is only right and fair that her readers take her at her word instead of imagining dire scenarios.  In time, we will either know or not know.

I agree, but I think it's only human that people start speculating out of frustration of not knowing.

Yes it is. I mean, obviously it is something very personal, and of course Jenna certainly does not have to tell us what is, but, when you have been reading and enjoying a story, such as FON, and it,s barely even half way through, and all of a sudden it,s gone, zine withdrawn etc, people are going to speculate, out of frustration as you rightly said. Whatever it is, I just hope that Jenna is ok, thats the main thing in the end I suppose. I havnt saved any of FON, theres really no point. All very sad, and as you say, for us, frustrating.

I highly doubt that it is because of issues between her and another fanfic writer.  Jennasts does not have any enemies in the fanfic community she is well loved.  Over at Dave Cullen there are many many fanfic people who know the lay of the land, and not one of them has suggested it is due to internal strife.  Time will tell on this one, but I do believe the general concensus, that it is for the legal reasons that have already been explained.

I know that at least one fan of "Force of Nature" has made a word document from the existing chapters and is providing it to people via email, and has offered it over at DC.  Perhaps those who want the story can make a request to get a copy of it from the person who compiled the doc file?

Pretty sure it's a legal thing. I sent her an email-which she responded to-regarding the availability of the fanzine. It is not available and all references to it where deleted from her community. I hope things get worked out and that she will be able to complete A Force of Nature.

I have both as (messy) Word docs as well-I was up until 3am copying like crazy.

So am I. I understand that at the moment, Jenna must feel absolutely awful and down, and probably extremely worried if (as seems most likely) there is a threat of litigation too. And so, hardly able to think about how to continue her story or her writing in general. But Jenna has seemed such a levelheaded, considerate, balanced and positive person in all her writing and her dealing with SN/FoN fans.......I'm therefore hoping she'll manage to use those same characteristics in bouncing back where her writing is concerned.

This may seem far out, but I was thinking that it wouldn't take all that much for FoN to reappear as original writing. The majority of characters are OCs, after all. The locations are not the same as in BBM. And the storyline of two gay men trying to build a life together in the face of strong  internalized and societal homophobia is generic enough that it could arguably have been conceived of without BBM.

If she changed the names of the 2 main characters and their immediate family and made some other small changes to their past history and so forth... would her story then be original? Will publishers and film companies turn a blind eye if stories are written "loosely inspired by" their previous work? I'd certainly continue reading FoN if the fic's title was changed and if the main characters reappeared as Tom and Bill.

I, too, would be thrilled to read the continuing story of Tom and Bill - the names matter to me not a whit, but rather the compelling relationship Jenna has written and the fantastically moving interplay between them. I just can not stand to think that I will never know how these two move forward and what happens between them and the original characters she has created.

I am rereading "Somebody New" for the 3rd time I think. One of my favorite Fan-fic's because it's so believable. I am finding Little things in it I missed before, like when they go horseback riding and the horses are spooked as they come up to a gully/drainage ditch. Jack says something along the lines of horses having a long memory and they may still be spooked by something that occurred there long ago. So Jack and Ennis dismount and walk the horses through the gully and the remount and continue. Well I never caught that little moment before, it's referencing Earl in the ditch. It's Ennis that spooked by something that happened long ago, but here in the story he has Jack to walk him across to the other side and continue their lives. Dores anyone have the sequel they can send me? Please? I'd love to read it.

yeah this is an amazong story. The first scene that comes to mind when I think back on it is when Ennis and Jack do a bit of role playing, pretending to be strangers in a bar.

In some stories where Jack is trying to move on, I think Jack appears way to fickle but this author manages so nicely to avoid that.

Sadly "Force of Nature" is no longer availiable on her LJ  due to legal reasons. It,s a great shame because Jenna is a fantastic writer and FON was shaping up to be a brilliant story. I wish that somehow she could finish it. I have the zine of SN and still read it from time to time. I don,t have any chapters of FON nature though. She had to take it all down at chapter 5. Great shame. :(

This is such a wonderful observation retropian! :)

Yes, I think Somebody New is truly brilliant.  The beginning sections with Ennis going through such intense emotional turmoil are so well written and well considered.  And, I do agree that she has a really subtle and nuanced understanding of Brokeback Mountain... which, seems particularly essential for fanfic to come out well.  I've read Somebody New twice and would gladly read it again at some point.  I always feel that this is the story to show someone who might be skeptical of fanfic in the hopes of persuading them to give fanfic a try, this story really is so strong.

I never saved any of the chapters of Force of Nature either since it was never completed.

I agree.

One of the things I remember I liked so well about FoN, was the sensitive and perceptive yet understated way it described the loving close relationship between Ennis and Junior - the slow, tentative moves in the direction of including Jack more directly in their little circle and in their connection over the long miles. Junior had just incidentally stumbled into having her first phone conversation with Jack ("Mr. Twist") when the fic had to break off.

I remember I used to make up my own mini-fics about the continuance of FoN. What was going on with the mysterious car mileage drainage and Jack's dreaful boss? When and how would Jack finally come out to his son and ex-wife? How would Ennis learn what kind of Star Trek fics Betty-Jo really was writing? What new bumps in the road and related opportunities for growth would there be in the J/E relationship? When would Jack and Junior actually meet, and how would the meeting go? Might the girls eventually travel down during some holiday to visit their dad and his partner? Etc Etc. (The "etc" includes: What new sexy makin' love scenes did Jenna have up her sleeve for J&E?)

I'm sorry to hear that Force of Nature is unfinished. I guess, as Annie Proulx says we'll have to finish it ourselves. I'm almost done rereading Somebody New. I'll be sorry it's over. I think her characterizations of J&E, and Junior are especially good.

Geez, for some reason this story really made me cry this time. I don't remember getting this emotional during my previous readings. I don't know why it's hitting me hard this time. It's just a great story of what might have been. Perhaps I'm mourning for that, and perhaps because I love someone, who's loves someone else, not me. What might have been.

Yes I know what you mean. The bit that always brings a lump to my throat is the epilogue especially. I cannot read that without getting a tear in my eye.

It is a fantastic story of what could have been because the way it was written was so beleivable. I loved the scene in the spa when Jack had got his new job at Tulip Feedlots and they were drinking champagne. The bit where he walked in and shouted "honey I,m home"! made me laugh.

What a fantastic writer Jenna is and what a bloody shame she couldn,t finish FON.  :(

I like how Ennis's character remains the same even as he stretches himself for Jack. Ennis becomes more self accepting but still remains Ennis. The processes he goes through is believable to me. It's a process many formally closeted gay men have endured and completed, and that a presumably straight woman can write about that is remarkable to me. I also like how the physicality of their sex parallels Ennis's development. I didn't catch this in previous reading, but the sex progresses in step with Ennis's progress. When Ennis accepts and forgives himself in the act of giving himself to Jack, that made me tear up. In an earlier scene, Ennis penetrates Jack, and can see that it hurts Jack,  moved me too, because it's a symbol of how Jack is willing to take the hurt for Ennis. Anything for Ennis. It is something I enjoy about this fan fiction, and others, in that the sex, while hot, is more about the love, and she expresses that really well.

Hey. I sent a message to Jenna on her live journal account to let her know how much I enjoyed 'Somebody New'. She says hi to everybody at Bettermost. I also asked her tonight how she had planned on ending 'Force of Nature'. I hope she can give a summary of what she planned since she wasn't able to publish the remainder.

When that zine was first made available for sale, I *so* much wanted to buy it, but I didn't, as I'd have had to give my credit card details for international shipping and I figured if worst came to worst, not only Jenna but the buyers of the thing could have copyright lawyers on their neck. I was not surprised but very sad when the copyright holders actually did take action some little time later.  :-\

But I would have loved to own that zine and I would have loved the opportunity to just leaf through it. So good luck to anyone trying to get hold of it, as long as Jenna herself thinks there is no problem with it.

I'd love to see the inside. Maybe one day I'll be able to get a copy for myself. I'm watching the auction just to see how much it sells for. I love the story. It strikes me a very realistic. I've had a taste of the emotions she describes. There is a scene in the story, the 1st Sunday when Jack visits Ennis in his apartment. In the bedroom Ennis is so overcome at one point he's trembling uncontrollably. That scene gets me because I've been there.

Jenna was nice enough to reply to my querie about the possible continuation of Force of Nature. Unfortunately while she had planned a novel length story she decided to use many of her ideas in other works. So no more than the 1st 5 chapters. She did say that she see's Jack and Ennis as moving from that house, but remaining in northern NM. They're now aged 65 and still together.  :)

Hello all. I'm between fanfics right now and am looking for another good one. I know Jenna couldn't officially continue Force of Nature, but from what I've gathered the story of Jack and Ennis continues undercover with new names to mask their identities. Can anyone clue me in as to which story's of hers these are?

Thanks, Ian

The offer is still there if anyone wants the printed version. I don't want any money for it btw. I am in the UK as I said so it may take a while. I've read it loads of times and I really don't need to read it again.  :)

I, too, would be thrilled to read the continuing story of Tom and Bill -
the names matter to me not a whit, but rather the compelling relationship
Jenna has written and the fantastically moving interplay between them.
I just can not stand to think that I will never know how these two move
forward and what happens between them and the original characters she
has created.

Thanks!

Heya!

I know I only joined the forum and I feel bad about asking already for something but apparently, I'm doing it anyway....*sigh*

I just read Somebody New but I do not have a file with the story, just had a printed version. And I of course would love to
read Forces Of Nature (Earthquake). So should anyone maybe have those files and should that someone not be bothered too much -  I'd be very very happy!

Thanx so much,

Forces of Nature was never finished. Jenna had to sadly remove it for legal reasons which was a great shame. I did have a printed version of Somebody New, but I've just sent it to one very happy person in Denmark who requested a copy. I think she's *surprised* by the art work.

some day I might be able to catch up with Jenna's sequels.

Force of Nature was never finished. Jenna only did about 5 chapters I think before she was forced to remove it for legal reasons which was a great shame. The same with Somebody New. It's not on LJ any more. I did have a printed copy but I gave it away. Maybe someone else has got a copy stored on their pc you could have.

That is when I got tired of Annie's legal team telling her she had to elimate the finished story.. I understood that they didn't want her
to do the comicfic, but they never made any money off the ones online.  I think that was very silly and paranoid of them.

if it wasn't for the fact that I had my own original story and original character in mind from the beginning, rewriting the Laramie Saga into the original stories they were would not have been possible after NBC's lawyer sent me their cease and desist letter.  The fact that it is a Moving On! story is what saved it in the long run.  But it took nearly a week to get all of the content off the internet in compliance with the order.

And hey, hi! Souxi, haven't seen you in a dog's age!  I'm finishing up #26 in the series now! I write slower nowadays :)

Kitty, I wouldn´t worry if I were you. Thousands of Brokeback Mountain fan fics have been written without anyone taking notice. The few (a couple?)stories that were targeted were high-profile pieces that were written early on in the fandom.

Well, that's something. My stories are well-received over on LJ but they're not high-profile. I guess that's not such a bad thing after all!

Is that why Beans and Crazies is no longer on there? I got a Word document from a friend who was around in the early days and they said it was taken off LJ :-\

Jenna made a brief appearance in the slash thread over on DCF yesterday.

She posted a link to her LJ, and a new one shot in the SN universe.

Just looking in here to say I really love Jenna's "Admit One". Not Brokeback, though the main characters almost could be (in fact I wonder if they were originally conceived as such). It's a book I've read many times - some angst but ultimately healing and comforting. A deeply convincing  portrayal of love ( and plenty of sex too, almost too much, indeed!).

Perhaps it's been discussed before?

Shiiiieeet.

"Somebody new" was an incredible story. I don't have the slightest idea how many exclamation marks or smilies to put or how to write a justified feedback for this story. So many feelings steered up, couldn't hardly breath while reading. Incredibly realistic, rich and psychologically deep, carefully drawn out characters, conversations, situations. Loved the break-up scene, LOVED Ennis' subsequent hell (just wonderful!!!), loved his further struggles and growth (forgiving himself at the end - wow, just wow!), loved the fact that Jack's manly pride was highly respected, that he was not portrayed as some sissy, bitchy, hysterical and demanding femal-ish something. The way Jack was hurt, sad and frightened, but still could not help himself as to continue to love, want, trust and care for Ennis was extremely balanced and well-written. The longings, the tensions..... oh-my-goodness... And the writing itself - very emotional, suffused with love, very funny where it needed to be.

Actually, i have not enjoyed happy endings for BBM so far ("Human Interest" was fine up to a certain point only), but the way "Somebody new" was written - i buy it absolutely.

I don't know what else to say... This was by far-far-far the best story for BBM so far (of course, i probably have not read much yet...). Some people mentioned "If I asked" here, but i think there is no comparison... "Somebody new" is much more realistic in my opinion. This story should be put in some kind of museum for BBM, framed and sealed, to be touched with white gloves only. I have no idea what kind of imagination and life experience or wit a person must have to be able to produce this kind of a story. Or how much research and work one have to put into this. I certainly would not be able to do so... It definitely does not deserve it to be deleted!

Glad you liked it. I loved it too, although for me, Human Interest was the one I considered The Best.

I found it when I was desperate, and read it straight through non stop for several days with hardly any sleep or food.

It saved - if not my life, then at least my sanity.

Hey, Sonja!

I liked Human Interest up to Jack's trip to Mexico. I loved Ennis' reaction to what happened there and thought his musing about how to fight for Jack was still alright. But then the story went somehow in a lot of coming out for Ennis, the end being a sort of wedding party and dancing with Jack (though not openly), and it just did not convince me. I just think that Ennis will never be able to "come out" and - besides - i don't think he has even a need for that. Neither does Jack in my opinion. The reason why Ennis does not want anybody to know about him and Jack is fear and shame. He can overcome / deal with the latter, but the former will always be an issue and i don't mean he will always be paranoid, but i think he is just being realistic where the times and places are concerned.

I also had a problem with Ennis' dialogue in HI. Although MadLori did explain that her Ennis is more talkative since he has been living with Jack for 7 years now, i feel that a part of his character - and charm! - is lost that way.

Apart from that, HI pictures J&E as being extremely rich and very successful with their ranch. As much as i would wish this for them, i do think this is not realistic. A lot of fanfics are build on the premise that Jack will get a bunch of money from Newsomes, but in my opinion this is wishful thinking, too. A lot of us want that sweet life for J&E, but I think the reality of their living together would not be as rosy as it is often pictured. I would enjoy a story more if there are more struggles there. For example, i thought the story "A various language" by Destina did a better job there, which is being closer to my pictured reality ;). I do think they would need to work long hours, maybe multiple jobs, be constantly busted in addition to facing discrimination. It will definitely not be easy for them...

Sorry, this should not be some general discussion about fanfics i've read so far, but i saw there is no thread where i could put this...

I just wanted to say about "Somebody New" that although it is a happy ever after story with that sweet life for them, the process of getting there is thoroughly worked out. HI starts up with J&E being 7 years together already, so the whole process of how they actually come to that is mostly missing (apart from some flashbacks). Therefore, less convincing. In "Somebody New" Ennis had two major ground-breaking experiences (Jack's breaking up and Ennis' subsequent delirium) which provide the groundwork for that sweet life and champagne at the end. And even then Ennis is still not interested to live in the open, and Jack understands it - which is more realistic in my mind.

What i liked about "Somebody New" is that the whole story is very consistent. These are hundreds of pages, written in chunks over several months, but it is mostly devoted to Ennis' growth and this growth is distributed nicely over the whole story. I have no idea how Jenna accomplished that (well, i have no idea of writing stories, that's probably why). But there are little details which show that gradual development. Like Ennis mostly not calling Jack's name (only in his mind at the beginning), but it changes at the end. Same goes for Ennis' thoughts which he mostly keeps to himself at the beginning, but spells them out to Jack more and more. Or those little moments of Jack which Ennis puts away in his memories at the beginning, but is not doing this at the end anymore. Sure, there are also more apparent things like saying "i love you", talk about sex out loud or eventually moving in. But for all of this there are always pages over pages of Ennis' thoughts and feelings which lead the way towards every little milestone in his growth. So, the whole process was quite satisfying and believable for me.
And with regards to that shame issue, "Somebody New" shows how Ennis is actually proud of Jack on several occasions. I think he is never ashamed of Jack in this story. Actually i now start on thinking whether he ever was ashamed of Jack in the original story, too.... But that would be OT now.

BBM-victim, I like your comparison between HI and SN. It's so many years since I read them now, that I can't really partake in a discussion about them.

It's true though, that they're very successful in HI, in a materialistic way. But they still struggle with the consequenses of Ennis' internal homophobia to a great deal.

There are rougher fics out there, I'm thinking especially of one where they stay together after the mountain and get a job at a farm. I'm afraid I can't remember what it's called, though.

Hi everyone,
Still quite not sure how everything works in here, but I'm more excited at the moment about getting into Bettermost than I was when I signed up on Facebook many years ago haha, so that's clearly a good sign.
Been here for a couple weeks already, though only skimming through some major topics, gathering up the courage to write something down myself, and I must say, you guys all seem to be a very friendly and loquacious unique bunch, and I'm absolutely in awe. Considering the fact that I was whopping six years old at the time when the masterpiece was released, I deeply regret I couldn't join you back in 2005/2006.
I'm unequivocally affected by the story (and by story I mean the film and the short story likewise) and there's lots of things I'd like to call into question, not just yet though, I need more time to amply verbalize my feelings, which are an untidy bunch, I've got to come up with fair phrasing for the questions I wish to raise, although you've arguably resolved a myriad of them since Bettermost came into existence.
I'm awful sorry for such a long digression at the beginning, but I didn't want to bother you with a separate post created with the sole purpose of me introducing myself ;)). Does any of you still have a copy of this "Somebody New" fanfic you were referring to? I certainly won't ever get tired of re-watching the film, listening to or reading the short story, but I'm riveted to find that the majority of you liked it, and sadly all the links provided above are inactive.

Hi Wojtek and welcome to BetterMost.

I don't read fanfic anymore and no longer have the stories saved, but I now others have.

Maybe Monika can help you. Scroll back a few pages and you'll find her posting.

Yes ma'am, I'll have a cup of coffee, but I can't eat no cake just now... I've had too much of it already today, would have to go over my limit (as though I had one haha).

As for Monika, she seems to have been last active in August, but as I said, it's nothing urgent. Thanks for your reply, have a good day! (or night in my instance.)

Hi Wojtek, I don't have Force of Nature, but I dug around and found Somebody New.  Let me know your email address and I'll send it on.

Hi morrobay,

I am new to this BBM Forum that I found when looking for Jennas Story "Somebody New". I just recently discovered the BBM fanfiction and Jennas fantastic FON series has me completely hooked. Now I am desperately hoping to get my hands on a copy of the prequel "Somebody New".

In your post to Wojtek you mention that you have got a copy of that Story as PDF. I would be eternally grateful if you could email it to me, too. My email adress is   [email protected]

Thank you so much.
Astrid
