Title: BROKIE & SAYIF (R.I.P. - 12th of June 08)
Post by: j.U.d.E. on July 04, 2006, 09:05:38 am
Yesterday, I finally went to this friend of a friend's street were for a while now there was this young cat running around, being fed by whoever felt like it. The cat is quite young (not much older than 1 year, I'd think), slim and a short-hair tabby cat (light and dark brown). Living so close to the street, it was only a matter of time for it to be run over. The people there said that she had kittens, but that someone had killed them..

Anyway, yesterday evening I get to that place and two kids were playing in front of the house, feeding the cat.. Turns out that the kittens are NOT dead and that they are happy and healthy three little ones! Old enough to walk around, it wouldn't have been much longer for them to be killed as well.

What to do?! I decided to take them all four and to bring them to my place! And I did. There, they looked around my flat for half an hour or so (I won't let them into the garden just yet) and then they all fell asleep on my bed! C.U.T.E.!!

The little ones look like their mother, just a little darker. I haven't checked yet, but I think they are all male. I will keep the mother and one kitten for good, but hope to find a permanent home for the other two.

I have started calling the mum 'Brokie' (I hope I won't have to explain to people where I got THAT name from!  ), but I can't think of a name for the kitten I'm going to keep.

That's now your job here! Can you help me find a BBM name for it? I don't mind/care if it's a female/male sounding name, but I prefer a gender-less name. Also, I don't like human first names. So, if anyone has an idea, I'd be happy to consider it!

I don't have pictures yet, but hope to get some very soon.

This is not my kitten, but it looks like the ones I have

Thank you!

Awww... that's so cute... that family is very lucky having you look after them. A good deed...

As to the genderless, non-human BBM name?

Twister? A play on Jack of course...

Ummm... *scratches head*. I'll post more if I can think of any. This kinda thing ain't ma strong point!

Jude -

What a lovely thing for you to have done.  It's gonna be a lot harder to find names if you want them to be genderless.  You could try Lil' Darlin' or Junior (as in Alma Jr.).  But if you didn't care about the gender aspect, there are so many possibilities.

I'd love to see pics of the kitties!

Thank you for your suggestions!   :)

I forgot to say, but 'Cigar Butt' is out of the question too! ;D

And actually, since I'm not a native English speaker, I'd like a name that doesn't 'mean' anything..if you know what I mean.

Like, I don't know.. "Proulx" or something..  :-\

Hello Jude --

OK, this may be goofy but I am very tired... how about Moon, since, as a tabby, all the white has been pawed out?   ;)

On a more serious note, GOOD FOR YOU for helping these animals in need.  I am involved in cat and dog rescue, and it can be very gratifiying work.  You meet great animals and great people too.

keep us posted....  :)  -- Alec

Wowie! May these cats bring you much joy, as you have given them of you.

Like Celeste, the first name I thought of was Junior.

Are you looking for something BBM related? How about Riverton or Lightningflat (mostly like shortened to Lightning), or even Juarez. Or you can name him after our community, BetterMost. What about Beans? Somehow I like the idea of a kitten named Beans.

If not BBM related, the possibilities are endless.

Thank you Starboardlight! Funny! I DID think of 'BetterMost' but I think it's a bit long. 'Beans' sounds cute! And 'Moon' and 'Lil'Darlin' and Twister! 'Junior' is not an option. We had a guy in school called 'Junior'.. no no.. And preferably a word that doesn't mean anything in English (or any other language - except Arabic -> I'm trying to learn that language - love the teacher, my classmates! It's great fun, so I'm considering a name/word in Arabic too).

If not, yes yes, yes! BBM-related! I also thought of 'Trimble' - that's the real-life last name of the guy who plays the Basque.. I like the sound of 'Trimble'. I thought of 'Nelly' as in 'gYLLENhaal'.. but I don't really like it actually..

Ok, for now I have to head home to those four little monsters! Thank you for all the ideas so far!

It's really a good deed that you took in the cats.

A name that doesn't 'mean' anything is hard to find.

Junior
Cherry (like in ~cake)
Rose (like in Old Rose)
Siesta
Maybe there's a nice word for "tent" or "mountain" in Arabic. You can ask your teacher. Especially an Arabic word for "mountain" would fit. So you would have Brokie for Brokeback and XXX for Mountain.

I like Nipith's "Beans" very much. Look at your signature   :) (I remember the scene from Brothers Grimm. I saw BG after I saw BBM and found it funny, that Heath's character name is Jake and beans also play a role in BG).

alright, here's a stab at names that have no meanings what so ever. I'm just putting sounds together. if any find them happens mean anything in a different languages, speak out.

Yos
Shando
Munta
Eps

Thank you! Great ideas everybody! I like all of the ones you've mentioned Starboardlight! But I think I'd go for a BBM-related one. 'Siesta' is cool too, because they sleep a lot!  ;D

I actually checked for the Arabic translation for 'little', 'darling', 'cherry', 'mountain', 'sheep', 'tent', 'moon', 'twister' and 'beans'.. Some are unpronouncable (twister, sheep and darling) and some I don't like ('tent' is 'rhaïma' which is okay, but I don't want to call my cat 'tent'..  :-\)

little/young - sahir
cherry - kharaz
moon - khmar
beans - lufla .......  :o
rose - ouriya
siesta - filoula ......  ???
[if I got it right - I will have to ask my teacher]

I really like 'kharaz'. It sounds like a precious stone. I'd change it to 'karaz' though..

... thinking some more ...

Jude you are a star, what a lovely deed!   Can't wait to see pics.  I  have two kitties of my own & they are so good to come home to.  Good luck with the naming.  I like the beans related one so far myself, maybe lufla shortened to luffie?  But you have to pick one that is right for how they look & the personality.

Aww, that good news has made my day!  :)

Nic, your mail made me smile!  :D 'Luffie', hunh? I'll have a hard time explaining THAT to people!  ;D

I have been reluctant to buy a digital camera for a long time now, but today during my lunch break I did! I am now a proud owner of a Sony compact camera! It must be worthwhile, 'cause yesterday I could have taken a great picture of all three kittens all sleeping together on one of my chairs, with extended legs and stretched to the limit (very hot weather here)!

-> Cute Overload!  ;)

Awww, there's nothing like kittens. So cute *melting*
I hope you will share more pictures with us. Don't worry about the quality, as long as we can see them it'll be ok

Some day I'll have a cat in my life again. I really miss having a cat around me. One of my children is heavily allergic to many things, including some animals. And we already have a dog. So I don't dare to bring more hairy animals into our house  :(

Keep us informed about the lovely bunch and the name you'll give that kitten.

Jude - they are irresistible!  Soon you will find you have literally 100s of photos of them...

Penthesilea - I was very allergic (with asthma) to pet hair when I was a child but seemed to have grown out of it now. Even going to someone's house where they had a cat would bring on a reaction.  But when I got my own house it was only a few months before I couldn't stand not having a cat & despite my doctor's advice I got two and have been totally fine.  Hopefully this will be the same for your child so they can enjoy having pets of their own later on.

Jude -

If you lived close to me I would give you a big hug! I think what you did for those kittens and their mother is wonderful!

As for the names, I like the idea Melissa had. She suggested Proulx (because cats prowl).

It's difficult to figure out a name for a pet until you get to know the animal and his or her personality. My cat's name is Oreo, but this was easy... he's black with a streak of white down his middle. :)

THANK YOU JUDE for what you did for these animals! :)

hi Jude,
your mother cat is the spitting image of my own cat, Suzy. And when we got another cat last year, I actually found its name by looking at the credits of a film my kids were watching and I saw the name Ollie.
You know, If I didn't already have two cats(who don't get along), I'd love to adopt one of your adorable kittens! And I'd better not show these pictures to my kids or I'll never hear the end of it.
Wonderful thing you're doing... :)

- tabby cats
- tabby cats in piles

You have hit all these nails on the head.

How about

Oh thank you all for the nice comments!

I'm a bit out of it.. 'cause this morning I brought the mother to the vet to get her neutered.. She got a injection that hurt and she screemed and afterwards looked at me...  ehh.. I almost cried! She will hate me! She will! At least for a few days...

I have to pick her up in an hour.. This is going to be very difficult.

Also, the vet asked me for a name. She needed one for administrative purposes, so I just said 'Brokie'. So the mum is now baptized.. Still looking for a name for the kitten I'm going to keep.

Fonteine, I asked my Arabic teacher yesterday.. eh.. he was amused by my question.. and the other two pupils too. Afterwards we had a longish discussion on the words 'love' 'to love' etc..  ;D  But he told me something completely different to what you said. Maybe it's a dialect. There are big big differences in the Arabic dialects, depending on where one is from. I'm not sure I can ask my teacher again - about "ah heh bik"..   What will he think!  ;D

I have always had tabbies because I am allergic to any other. A cat that I once had and still miss was named Smokie. If you want something that rhymes with Brokie and reminds you of something Jack and Ennis did a lot, it might work.

I like 'Smokie' (and 'Brokie') Front-Ranger, but I think I will go for something Arabic..

And I won't call the kitten 'Precious', nor 'Precocious'..  ;D I promise!

I have my mind set on=

cloud - sahaba or akkara
full moon - mali qamar
abandonned - mahjour
silent - sukat
star - najm
sweet/tender - lathif
summer - sayif
tear - dam'a
cherry - kharaz
sky - sama'
mountain - jabaal
smile - basma
to dream - halama
my heart - kalbi

I kind of like:

- 'Brokie and Sahaba'
- 'Brokie and Qamar'
- 'Brokie and Kharaz'
- 'Brokie and Sama'
- 'Brokie and Basma'

or

- 'Mali and Qamar' .. but it's too late for that

He/She does have a bullseye!

I would name this cat Robin.

Robin can be a boy's or girl's name too.  :)

How did I not see this delicious joy til now?  Jude, sooo beautiful.  You are a woman very rich in cats.

Like, I don't know.. "Proulx" or something..  :-\

This is a very cat-like sound, especially in French, sort of a purr/vocalization.  I like it.
Title: Re: Naming that kitten.. -> MORE pictures!

Thank you everyone!

Well I did think of "Proulx".. but 'proute', which sounds similar is not the best of words to name a kitten after. Though I really like "Proulx"..

I think I'm going to stick with an Arab word/name. Especially now with everything happening in the Middle East (my Arab teacher is Lebanese. He is hoping that his parents will be evacuated together with the British, today..)..

Choice is now between:

cloud - sahaba or akkara
(full) moon - (mali) qamar
forgotten - nassiya
silent - suka(t)
summer - sayif
tear - dam'a
cherry - kharaz
to dream - halama
my heart - kalbi

From the sound of the Arabic words (as I think they sound, may be totally wrong  :)) I like sayif, kharaz and suka the best.
From the meaning I still like cherry the best. Silent is good, too, if it matches the kitten's character. But I guess at *that* age your kittens are right now, they're all lively lil' gals cats and not too silent  ;D

Thank you Chrissi. I do like the ones you've mentioned too. And the 'cherry' option! They are very lively indeed, but they sleep much much more than they are awake! That's good. I was going to keep the lighter brown one, but that kitten is almost never coming to me, nor does it like to be touched. The smaller of the two dark ones is really cute and wants much more of my attention. It also falls asleep next to me or cuddles up on my legs. So I think I'll keep that one and the mother.

Not an easy choice, though!

Hi Jude -

Either you're a great photographer, or these are the most photogenic kitties ever.  I'm willing to believe it's both, but these pics you take are excellent.  The composition is just wonderful.  Yummy.  Very yummy.  Keep 'em coming.

Sometimes my cat Oreo will do that very same thing.... on my legs!   >:(

David! It's not as bad as it looks! Actually when I play with and tickle the little ones, they 'fight back', but never scratching me! I am SOOO used to having cats and scratches, but these are very gentle.. That is until two of them try to crawl up my leg, while I'm standing in the kitchen..   :o  Nosy little buggers!  ;D

Does this one have a bulls-eye on its side, or are my eyes playing tricks on me? This looks kind of like my cat, who has matching bulls-eyes on both of his sides (except my cat is ENORMOUS - not an ounce of fat, but very tall and long).
YEs! I guess! I did not know you called it that way. Actually the mother and this little kitty have one only. The other two have none at all..

Like I said, I would name one of the cats with the bullseye Robin (as in Robin Hood). If he is a boy cat, you could call him Robbie for short. Robin can be a name for both boys and girls.   :D

It died of Typhus.. Now I have to save the other two..

Can I cry over a kitten with everything happening in the world? I don't know, but I do.. It was the smallest and weakest one, but it did play-fight with its 'big' brother a lot and it was the one that came to cuddle with me most..  :'(

I posthumely baptize it Sama' -> meaning 'sky' in Arabic.

Well, thank you Bel! I went back to the vet this lunch to have the two others vaccinated. The vet says she thinks they might be stronger and fight the disease. Incubation is up to 10 days, so I will know then.

The vet asked me if I wanted to see Sama' and I said yes.. It was already stiff.. I cried. The vet told me another kitten died a while ago and suffered for 5 long days. Sama' "fortunately" died quickly…  The vet has a huge grey tabby cat called Max, wandering around in her office. She said that Max stayed on top or in front of Sama's cage all night, so it did not die alone. It does make me feel a bit better, because yesterday evening when I had to hand over Sama', it looked at me like 'it knew'..

I'm sorry to hear about Sama. My heart sank when I saw the title.

btw, "Sama" in Japanese is used to address royalty, ie "Tenchi-sama" is equivalent to "Lord Tenchi". It's a beautiful name for the little feline prince.

Thank God the mother and her babies found you Jude. You have taken  them  into your home and given them love, comfort and happiness. I am SO sorry to hear about the little kitten passing away. I am so happy he found you though. You brought much happiness and love to his little life during his last days.

I hate to think what might have happened to all of them had you not invited them into your home.

Thank you all! Reading your posts helps me going through this. I had to explain to a colleague today what happened and I cried again..

Yes, the name Sama' seems to have been a perfect choice. I can't believe he's gone though.. It's not fair. It's far too early.. I'm fighting back my tears writing this, but the lump in my throat, I can't fight back..

Also, I'm not without guilt.. I feel like it's partly my fault.. I had the cats for 3 weeks and did not go to the vet right away.. I was worried to make that phone call, having to talk in Dutch.. So I went without appointment a week after adopting the cats. It was sooo hot and a tiny little waiting room and loads of people and me with four stressed-out cats... I left after 10 minutes. I took all my courage and called and made an appointement for after the week-end (the vet was all booked out). She checked them but said she would neutre the mother first, wait for 5/6 days for the mother to get better and then have them all vaccinated at the same time... But that seemed to have been too late...  :'(

I've read all kinds of stuff on 'cat typhus' on the internet. It's a highly infectuous virus, very lethal and the pet dies within hours.. but I'm not sure where it comes from. It's passed on in many ways and very resistant! My neighbour has 3 little dogs and they do their 'deed' in the garden (I can see and smell it sometimes..). There is a fence between our gardens and neither my cats nor her dogs can cross over.. but the virus can, I guess..

-> I have the feeling that this little fellow is actually wondering where his brother is. I have a feeling they are all three a bit confused. They follow me everywhere..

I feel guilty.. This morning, one of the other two kittens (the one on the picture) wouldn't eat anything... I'm worried. I don't want this to happen ..

I still say the cat and her kittens were very lucky to have found you. God only knows what they got into while they were living outside.

You couldn't have known. Nobody could have. You didn't do anything wrong.

They were blessed to have found you.  :)

The Saga continues..

The second kitten is ill. It started yesterday morning, not wanting to eat. In the evening I called the vet to make an appointment for this morning 9am. Yesterday was my sister's birthday and we went to the restaurant with my mother. I don't have a good relationship with my sister anyway, so yesterday in the restaurant from the very first minute, I wanted out! I wanted to go back to my cats. It was hell! When I came home the sick kitten still followed me everywhere and when I sat on the floor it climbed on my lap (just like Sama'). This night I slept on the matrass on the floor with the kitten next to me all night.

I was up early and couldn't wait for it to be 9am! I took the mother to the vet too (the vet had asked me to do that) and the vet prepared 5 syringes - all for the kitten! Horrible! One was antibiotica, one against the pain, one against the fever and the two last big syringes with fluids against dehydration. The first 4 went well, but then the kitten fled back into its basket where the mother was lying. It cuddled next to the mum. Even the vet had a hard time fighting back the tears.. She gave the last syringe with the kitten in the basket - that went well. Two minutes from there to my home I left the cats out of the basket and the kitten came sort of 'bouncing' out all fresh! It was totally amazing!! Very weak though (it hadn't eaten in 1 1/2 days) it followed me everywhere, purring non-stop and miauwing (I filmed it with my digi camera - I'll post it here as soon as I can). Then it followed its brother onto my bed where the mother was lying and they both went drinking milk - it was just wonderful to watch!! I had to leave and get my car (at the garage) - I actually sponteanously took half a day off this morning - and was almost afraid to go back home, fearing the condition would have worsened again. Both kittens were laying on the bed still and when the mother came they drank some more milk! Now I keep hoping that the kitten will survive till tonight, when I go back to the vet, where it will get more fluids.

I keep hoping too, that the mother and the third kitten will be spared! Mother and son kept me awake all night, playing around my flat. They both still eat, which is a good sign!

Hey Jude,
I wish them all the best.  It's so stressful, I know, and there's a lot of guilt and second-guessing when taking care of someone who won't tell you when he's sick, won't tell you where it hurts, pretends nothing is wrong etc.  Love them love them love them while they're here, however long that is.

Thank you everyone for your support! I wasn't going to post, but I think I owe you..

The second kitten was put to sleep an hour ago.. It was much much better on Saturday morning, when it came back from a night at the vet (with baxter etc). But in the evening it got worse and yesterday and especially this night was cruel.. I spare you the details but at 4:45am I called a vet urgency and that vet gave him about 8 injections...... AWEFUL!!! It had 40°C temperature :o  :o When I came home the kitten was bleeding from one of the injection points.. It was without strength whatsoever but always went (tried to..) to drink some water (I fed it water through a syringe).. At 8:30am I called my vet, who I knew was out of town, but her mother called back and said I could bring the kitten and her daughter would be on the way back to Brussels.. I left the kitten at 10am and at 11am the vet called me and said that she had put it to sleep. It was the best thing to do.. but I'm completely distraught by the fact that on its last day and half it went through HELL! What a way to go....  :'(  :'(  :'(

A friend of mine said now it would join its brother Sama' (sky). So I decided to posthumely baptize it Sahaba (cloud).

The mother rejected and ignored Sahaba. Very very cruel to watch.. I was angry at Brokie! The third brother seems to be in surplus of energy!! It's nice to see, but it hurts a lot too. Out of the three, he is the one I was going to give away for sure. He was very distant at the beginning, whereas Sama' and Sahaba where much more 'cuddly'... But that changed and he wants my attention a lot. I think mother and son noticed something was wrong..

I'll call the third kitten 'Sayif' (summer). So it's Sama', Sahaba and Sayif. I think that goes together well.

Sorry about the bad news. I can't help it, but I'm angry at myself, at that stupid emergency-vet and at that lethal virus that creaped into my life and that of the kittens in the last 3 weeks. I can't do with more! I'm wreck and I feel stupid. Two colleagues asked about the cats and I just said 'no cat-talk' and sent them away! My sister called me on my mobile, I ignored her call. I just can't right now.

Sorry again.

That's right Front-ranger.  If anyone understands how it feels to be hurting & in pain it's us lot here.  Please feel free to vent here & tell us anything Jude.  Here is a piece of writing that has done the rounds on the internet.  It's more for those who have lost a pet that has been with them for a long time but I think you loved that little pair as much as you could in the time they were here.

R a i n b o    w   B   r i d g e

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow
Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially
close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow
Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our
special friends so they can run and play
together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and
our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are
restored to health and vigor; those who were
hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again,
just as we remember them in our dreams of
days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for
one small thing; they each miss someone very
special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day
comes when one suddenly stops and looks into
the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His
eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run
from the group, flying over the green grass, his
legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your
special friend finally meet, you cling together in
joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The
happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands
again caress the beloved head, and you look once
more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long
gone from your life but never absent from your
heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Thanks again everyone! I am still a bit lost and wondering why it happened and why it happened the way it did.. So much suffering, especially for Sahaba. I still can't look at the pictures and I save all new pictures (of mother and son) with the heading '3Kitten'.. I haven't told anyone the full story yet and I know I can't talk to people about it, when I know that they are not animal/cat lovers. My colleague kept asking me about 'the cats' and I basically ignored his questioning, knowing that he didn't really care, but felt obliged to ask, since we are sharing an office.

Nic! Thank you thank you thank you for the 'Rainbow Bridge' poem! It is beautiful. I'm usually not as easily moved, but reading this poem made tears appear..

Victoria, I understand totally! Does it get easier with time? The blaming oneself? There's nothing one can do to turn back time, and although I think Sahaba was 'called back', I would love to have a second chance and at least not let him suffer for so long..... I have for a week and a half now tried to totally block out the images of the week-end of Sahaba's death, because just thinking about it, makes me physically sick - knowing that I could have spared Sahaba a LOT of pain.. It makes me angry. I had them for one month. Four weeks and even less.. and still, it feels like a lifetime and I wish I could have seen Sama' and Sahaba as adult cats..

But I have to think about the remaining kitten - SAYIF and the mother - BROKIE. I had quite a few adventures with SAYIF -> he got caught in a fly-catching glue-paper-thing - it was awful! My heart was pounding and I thought I'd lose one more... He recovered quickly, but Brokie was pretty shaken and she hid for about two hours somewhere in my flat; the other day Sayif fell (or jumped?) off the one wall outside my garden (so, he must have climbed the fence first.. tsts..) and was a bit disoriented, but fine. I had to go out and around the whole apartment block to where he was. When I called him, he recognized me (or my voice) and came dashing towards me! That was so cute! Brokie is recognizing her name too I think. I can't help it, but I think she is still a little angry with me for letting two of her babies die.. We have to go through this though and I hope that it will get better with time.

Again, thank you everybody for your support and sweet words! I have a few pictures of BROKIE and SAYIF (all he does is play and eat, meaning he's getting bigger everyday.. He'll soon catch up in size with Brokie!  ;D ).

Hi Jude,

I'm so happy relieved to hear that Brokie and Sayif are fine. Since we haven't heard from you the last days I really worried about them and you.

It will be getting easier with time, believe me. And the feeling of guilt is very common after the death of a beloved animal, too. It's because they can't speak, that we always ask ourselves if we did too less or too much or too late.
My cat died alone in one night. I knew she had cancer and I felt it when the time had come to bring it to an end. I made an appointment with my vet for the next day, because on this very day I had no one I could have brought my children to (and sure I couldn't take them with me). She didn't make it to the next morning. She died in that night alone. She went out of the house, laid down in our barn and died.
I felt so guilty that I didn't put her down the day before or at least stayed by her through the night. I felt I should have managed it to find someone to look after the children, I should have asked more people.

Today I still am sad about the death of my cat and I still ask myself if I did right by her. But I can think of her without tearing up. The sadness and doubts will perhaps never vanish completely, but with time they will lessen and the happy memories will come to the foreground.

Again: I'm so happy for you that mother and son are fine and bring joy and comfort to you. And your pics are awesome as always. Love them!

Brokie & Sayif are going to be so spoiled! Glad they are doing ok and you sound like you're doing better too.  The important thing now is to carry on & look to the future, spoiling those two rotten - as they deserve  ;D

Chrissi, this is a very sad story indeed! But you couldn't know when exactly she would go. I understand your doubts and the guilt and like you said, it will get easier with time. I can talk about Sama' and Sahaba now, but I still can't bring myself to look at their pictures. I have a little film of Sahaba, but none of Sama' which I will always regret. I think we do have to know that our pets must have known we cared for them, otherwise they wouldn't have stayed. I am happy to see Brokie and Sayif climbing the fence to go stroll about and come back to me. To me! So this means, they must like me a little. Actually I think Brokie hissed at Sahaba and was very distant for a while, to show me she was pissed off.. Now she's even started to purr!! She didn't purr once until about last week-end or so. Sayif still doesn't (except when he drinks from his mum then his little 'purring engine' starts).. He is becoming very very 'cuddly' (sometimes I don't even know how to get rid of him..  ;D), but he hasn't once purred with me so far..

More pictures (I have a problem with tinypic.com today, so I'll attach them): Sayif is getting big(!). He's almost as big as Brokie. Brokie is very thin.. I have to make sure Sayif doesn't eat all the food, 'cause Brokie often just watches him eat, waiting for her turn (even though I have 2 bowls)..

Jude, I'm always stunned by your pics. This one is so beautiful because of it's symmetry. And cute as always. Seeing it, I'd like to cuddle together with them instantly.
My cat was not allowed in our bed. At least not officially. But when she managed to sneak in, I never threw her out. Couldn't. Too cute.

Thank you Chrissi! I like cats, but I like photography too.. So, I'm trying to combine both..

I wish I had taught them not to go on the bed, but when I first got the mother and the three small kittens they were sooooo happy to be able to sleep on something soft (after months in the wilderness), I just couldn't chase them away. Now it's impossible (..) to let them know, I don't want them on the bed.. At least they know they are not allowed anywhere near the kitchen's working area.. But they sneak up there, I know... 'cause I have seen foot prints..  :(

One more picture of Brokie yesterday evening..

Looks to me that you're doing a great job in both!

My Dad used to say put pepper down on the kitchen work surfaces to discourage the cats from going up there - they don't like it as it tickles their nose.  I don't know if it works as I've never had to try it with mine.

I love cats when they are sleepy like in your video, they are so docile! In a way you don't want to pet them cos you don't want to disturb them but on the other hand they are too cute to resist.

Your cats are so beautiful, and they look like quite the personalities as well. I'm enjoying the pictures. Thank you for continuing to share them, and through them Brokie and Saiyif with us as well.  :)

The video of sleeping Saiyif is ....peaceful. Lovely. And very cute. I felt as if it was me stroking that little paw.

"Fuzz therapy", I always quote "Calvin and Hobbes" to myself when I pet my sleeping dog that same way, scratching his tummy, and snuffling into the soft fur around his ears. A content and trusting cat or dog is such a happy sight.

Hello Jude -- I have just caught up on this thread and I am sorry that you had to go through so much.  But at least those kittens who did not make it were safe and warm and loved for as long as they were with you... much better than having been in the street!  I have had a number of pets die, including 3 in the last year, and so I know how rough it can be.  This little family was lucky to find you!

Hi,

I had a cat for 18 years; she was named Chazy because she was found near the Chazy River in Moors, NY. Actuallly, she was found by my former landlady, Anne, who has a cottage, near Moors, NY.
I was in Quebec City painting the inside house of a girlf (friend) of mine when Anne telephoned me telling me about the cat she found and asked me if I wanted to adopt it as it was one of my depressing state when a so-called lover dumped me for someone else.  No wonder I get sort of choosy these days.
To go back to the cat, I said No, Nil, no way, forget about it, I hate cats.  Anne said well try it and if it doesn't work we'll take it to the humane sociiety.  Well, I had her for 18 years.  A friend, she helped me through my convalescence when I busted my right hip playing squash. Shed passed away in 2001 from kidney failure.  I have her ashes at home.  No more though.
Hey, this is supposed to be about BBM and not cats!!!

Oh Pierre, I'm so sorry to hear about your cat.   :'(

I have a black and white cat. I named him Oreo because he looks like an Oreo cookie!  :D

Most of the time I call him Orie (short for Oreo, I guess). He will turn 3 in May. He's very small for a male cat and he is very hyper too!

Pierre, I never saw your post. Sorry! If you're still around - I liked your story! It's crazy what an animal has us do sometimes! 18 years, hunh? Wow! I find it endearing how an animal senses when your are ill or upset. It's so nice to have a cat cuddle next to you, when you have a miserable day, with cough and fever, remaining in bed all day.

Hiya Fabienne!

Well, my mother made the blanket for me. You know, I love cats, I love animals, I love MY cats, but I don't need/want any cat-postcards, cat-calendars, cat-mugs, mini-porcelain-cats, cat-curtains, cat-key-chains etc..  I'm too cool for that..  8)

I have one picture of Sayif and Brokie in my flat, but that's because at the time I tried my new printer. The blanket you see on the picture is the only cat-paraphernalia I allow..   ;D  But I like it and more importantly Sayif and Brokie love it! They take turns now, because before they would fit in it together. Not anymore..   :)

Since then I'm 'honoured' with corny coloured kitten calenders from friends and relatives... :-\

My mother has an over-sized stone-cat, sitting up elegantly in a kind of sky blue, which she wants to give me. I might take it - one day, 'cause that one I like. Only, blue, does not really fit my flat...

Years ago, my stepfather (for some unknown reason) gave my mother a small owl made out of alabaster as a gift.  The next time gift-giving came around, he gave her an owl picture made of metal bottle caps on wood. ???

Well, two owls, now that's a collection.  So for several years he kept giving her owls made out of different materials.  (Unfortunately no gold or platinum.)  Finally, she told him she felt done with owls.  (She had never been into them to begin with!)

So he swiched (again, no one knows why) to eggs made out of different kinds of stones.

:)

We used to think my mother had a thing for pigs so every birthday & christmas there'd be a pig-related gift for her, then a few years ago she just came out with the fact she didn't really like them & didn't know why we had that idea.  I don't either! We had to laugh at the fact she'd always been showered with gifts of pigs!

I like having cat things about the place, but am not OTT.  I like my two real kitties the best!  Glad to see your two are doing ok Jude  :)

Thanks Nic. Nice to 'see' you again. It's funny how one can assume things about others.  ;D  I once got a mug with dolphins on it and the handle in form of a dolphin, from a person convinced I was a big lover of dolphins. Of course I like dolphins, like most people, but I wouldn't go as far as collecting them in whatever form they sell them. Funny thing is, I've known that person for about 10 years now..   ::) I didn't shy away from telling her that I'm not that big of a dolphin fan. I think she just wanted to get rid of that mug, really.

Swear to God, Jude, your cats - and the wonderful photos you take of them - are the most beautiful anythings on Earth.  I feel like if I was ever flat with depression, a few pics of them would set me back on my feet again.

I love that dozy, smiley look in the most recent window picture.  And the face on Brokie while Sayif is laying on her says "I'm getting annoyed" loud and clear.  :)

They are so very very different in character! While Brokie loves it when I have visitors . She seems to enjoy hearing human voices. Whereas Sayif, who's a real little 'bugger' with me, hides the minute strangers enter the flat. But they also have things in common (they love playing with dropping water). Good thing is, they do most things (sleeping, eating, going for a stroll) together. Though Sayif is getting more and more adventurous..

By the way, I love your new avatar Clarissa!  ;D

Fabienne, one little correction -> Brokie is a 'she'. Brokie is the mother and Sayif her son. They have both been neutered though, so it doesn't really matter anymore, right?

Totally! i was just commenting how photogenic they are and how good you are with a camera to my other half... my cats don't pose anywhere near as well, but I think they're gorgeous in real life... (But then I'm bias).

I don't know if I've ever said, but even though I know its not the case - I always think of 'say if you're there' when I hear of sayif the cat.

You never said the 'say if you're there', but if it helps remembering the name  :D It is - I think - pronounced 'ssaa-yeef'. That's how my Arabic teacher says it. Sayif means 'summer', but I think I've mentioned that..  no?  ;D

As it is, I have one and only picture of Brokie and Sayif up on my message board in the kitchen. And that only beacause I wanted to check if my colour printer worked. For some odd (?) reason, I don't have any of my pictures on the wall. I never have. Nor have I any of my water colour paintings framed and on the wall. I don't know why that is. Aww. How cute!! I always love looking at your kitty pictures, Jude!! The cat up at the top didn't end up falling off, did he?

Beautiful cats!
Thank you Shasta! I think the beauty of those two is that they look like twins (except when you take a closer look). It's fun to see the 'symmetry'.

They differ though enormously in weight. I don't know what they weigh, but I can see and feel it. Sayif has been an 'eater' ever since last summer when I took him home at 3 months. That's probably one of the reasons why he survived his two brothers..

They have very much the same 'design' (Sayif has a whiter chin), but their fur is quite different. Brokie is really silky soft, whereas Sayif's fur is less silky, but very shiny.

Hi David. I would never ever attach my cats to anything with velcro!  But Sayif did get 'caught' in that fly repellent gluey paper last summer.. I was sooooo lucky to be at home when it happened.. It scared the living ***** out of him! Not easy either to get that stuff off of him, without some fur....  :o

Anyway, the cat you see velcroed to the wall is Brokie. She did not fall off from there, but she has fallen off from here at least twice:

My cat sometimes falls from the window sill, or even from the top of the television downstairs in the basement. So I've placed pillows on the floor in both of those locations so he won't get hurt when it happens. He falls alseep and just rolls off sometimes!

That must be quite funny to watch, though probably less funny for the cat!   ;D

Beautiful felines! They have that napping thing down, don't they.  ;)

How did you get that picture of Sayif sitting so still --like a statue beside a statue?  I love the composition of that shot! Perfect.

Thanks for sharing. I love cats!

Thank you Shasta. To be honest, I took at least 4 or 5 pictures of Sayif next to the statue, hoping that one would 'echo' the other. He is not supposed to go on the table, but when it's not used, I let it go. Brokie doesn't do things like that.

To convince you all that my cats don't only sleep all the time, I have here a little video from the other week.

I went to a party last week and the little boy there said -- don't let that cat fool you, she's evil. haha He said the cat bites and scratches. It was a wild cat that they adopted when a baby, so I didn't doubt. Anyway, she jumped on the table and was going for the food. I was right there, so I grabbed her and held her and petted her before I put her down. She was fine to me.

Haha -- I have no doubt that your two frolic! When there are two young cats together, there is lots of activity. But if you get the video working, please let us see it!!

Thank you all! I think these kitties are really photogenic at times. The other day, they left the flat (I let them out of the window sometimes) and started walking away next to each other like to old friends on a stroll! Funny! Pitty I didn't have my camera..  :D

Being cute doesn't mean they can't do stupid things, though! But somehow cuteness wins every time!

Crybaby probably a year old now, but I had a kitten once who had babies when she was 6 months old. It was pittiful, but they all looked so cute together.

Cute idea! But Mr Sayif has been neutered, as has his mother Brokie. My policy to own a cat or more, for a number of years now, has been to get the cat off of the street or from shelters. Brokie and Sayif (and late Sama' and Sahaba) were found in the street. Other than that, I think there are enough stray cats and there is no need to produce more of them.

Time flies!! I brought these cats home on 4th of July 2006. Brokie was about 1 year and 3 months old. Sayif was approximately 3 months old. He is is now 2 and Brokie is 3.

Sayif just brought back a mouse! A tiny one. Still alive, unhurt as far as I could tell. I should have taken a picture, but I freak out when that happens. I hate it when my cats do that. I know it's natural but still.. Good thing is it's only been the second time. I once found a dead mouse in my garden and who knows how many they have eaten, but live mice - uh uhn! I freak out especially when the mouse is hurt. I don't know what to do then. I once (years ago) tried to kill a dying mouse.. I couldn't.. In the end I flushed it down the toilet...

Tonight's mouse was lucky. I took it in a glas and brought it back outside. It was wet and shivering, but not hurt. I wanted to dry it a little bit, but it was trembling too much. I was afraid I'd scare it even more.

Also, my neighbours (a few gardens away from mine) have this big angry, black male cat that has been harrassing me and my cats for months now. I gave it shelter and food though, when it was frozen and/or wet in the winter months, because the owners just couldn't seem to take care of it. Now, it's been 5+ days that the cat has disappeared. The neighbours came to ask me if I knew about the cat's whereabouts. I hate this cat, but now I can't stop thinking about what horrible things could have happened to it. It must be quite stressful not to know where your pet is, when it's gone for so long.

You know what?! That stupid Sayif brought the mouse back! I'm pretty sure it is the same one even though I took the mouse outside to the front of my flat into the bushes. ..

I thought it was dying so I put it under a lamp to at least feel warmth. I left it there for 30/40 minutes or so when I suddenly heard a noise. The mouse was full awake/alive again and jumped out of my hand to the floor...... NO IDEA where it is now. Somewhere in my flat.. Stupid mouse! What do these creatures eat? I actually think it's in my storage room. I closed the door, but I think I'll never find it there. .. My cats will though eventually... argh.. stupid stupid mouse!

You all may want to know that the stupid big black cat from my neighbours, got back home. He had hidden in the garage of the building next door and for some reason didn't find his way back outside. He was fed by some of the tenants there.

I came home at around 6pm and my neighbour was waiting for me telling me there was a dead cat on the street. It was Sayif.
He was hit by a car, I think. He was still breathing.. heavily. He was hit at the head.

I rushed to the vet and stayed for 2 hours or so. The vet did what she could. I drove home.

About an hour ago, she called and said, that Sayif had died..

What will happen to Brokie now.......

ooooooooh. no. no. no. no. no. no. no.

Oh no Jude. :'( I'm so sorry.

Oh god I know how this feels, its gutting and it pulls you apart inside. And you feel silly crying your eyes out and worrying about the other cat but you can't help it. It's natural.

And then Brokie will look so lost - Skimble was the same. He began meowing at himeslef in the mirror (they looked very similar)

I wish I could say something to make you feel better but I know I can't so I'm going to be practical.....This article was one I found when Sooty died and found it useful in delaing with Skimble - http://www.messybeast.com/cat-grief.htm

one thing I thought a lot about when Sooty died was how I wished I had more pics of him... you've got lots and lots of gorgeous photos of Sayif. That's probably not much a comfort right now but later you'll love flicking through them.

I hope you and Brokie are doing as well as can be under the circumstances. Big hugs to you.

And I agree with Kelda, all those pictures you took of him will be a great consolation to you, maybe not today or tomorrow, but someday...

Hang in there!  :-*

jUdE, I am so, so sorry.

I had a cat, an abyssinian named Oz (for Ozymandias, of course!) who died 8 years ago at the age of 15. I was devastated, and it took me a long time to get over his death. Grief for a beloved companion is very hard, and I feel for you. Words are small things, but sometimes it's all we have to give. Be well--Brokie will comfort you, I know it.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

(((Jude)))

I'm so sorry about your loss.  Pets have such a special place in our lives.

I know exactly how you've been feeling.  Last weekend our beautiful greyhound Trixie had to have emergency surgery for a dental abcess that had caused her to lose a lot of blood.  She was 12, about the life expectancy for a greyhound, and she lived for four days but it was too much for her heart.  When I came downstairs this morning, just two hours ago, I found that she'd passed away during the night.  There was nothing to be done, my sweet girl was gone.

Cats and dogs in particular are pets that share our homes with us, and it's hard that we usually outlive them.  But the total trust, the acceptance, the empathy we get from them is like no other relationship we can have.  They enrich our souls.  Please give Brokie a special pet for me.  And know that you gave this kitten you rescued a good life, with lots of love and good times.

No more for now, I'm tearing up again.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ --°’o’°-- ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

In memory of Sayif…

Since it happened, every now and then I have these moments where my heart starts pounding and I have to breathe heavily. They are very short moments, but hurting like hell. I try blocking out the pictures of Sayif, when I found him lying on the street, but they keep popping up..

Ever since I was four years old, there was a cat or cats accompanying me through life. Except for, there were all rescued from somewhere (the street, shelters, foreign countries) and though I’ve lost some of them because of illness and age (one disappeared), I never had to go through what I had to go through with Sayif yesterday. A loss so sudden, so brutal.

But first, Marge. I am so sorry to hear about Trixie! This is so sad. This is so sad. Reading your message made me cry again. What a beautiful dog! I’m hugging you and hope you are surrounded by people who will understand your grief and will console you.

I would like to thank you all, with all my heart and my eyes filled with tears (who usually don’t come that easily). All your messages, your words, your hugs and Elle, Sayif in the banner, is all very overwhelming. Some of you have accompanied me and Brokie and the kittens, from the very beginning and through the ordeal of losing two kittens within one month of rescuing them from the street. I then thought that it was ‘safe’. That Brokie and Sayif had made it through the initial hurdles and would stay with me for 10-15 years or so.

Sayif [meaning ‘summer’ in Arabic; ‘summer’ like the summer for Ennis and Jack, in 1963] was the son of Brokie. When I brought Brokie home in the summer of 2006 with Sayif, Sama’ [sky] and Sahaba [cloud], I knew I wasn’t going to keep them all. I had decided to keep Brokie and one of the kittens. Sayif wasn’t my first choice. Compared to his brothers he was very distant and constantly and only thought about food (which is very possibly what saved him from the illnesses his weaker brothers died of). When I was left with Brokie and Sayif, he became very attached and cuddly. It took Brokie about 6 months or so though, to finally start purring. When she does now, it is a very constant and silent purring.

I do not live in a place that is safe for cats, I know. There are cars driving on both sides of the block of flats. In the back of my head I am always worried. Always. I manage to ‘forget’ that danger during the day when I am at work, but the minute I get into my car to drive home, I have to be home quickly and see if both of them are safe. But the worry is present, constantly.

[Alert: the following text may be a bit graphic in parts] Yesterday I left home earlier than usual, as I had to be on the other side of Brussels at 7pm. But I wanted to go home first, feed and check on the cats. There are two little streets from the main street that lead to the block of flats I live in. I had taken the one where I didn’t drive past Sayif. When I parked my car in front of my flat, my neighbour suddenly appeared and I almost jumped because I thought, wow, I didn’t see her and could have hit her with my car. She looked at me through the car window and my blood froze.. She said there was a dead cat in the middle of the street and she was pretty sure it was one of mine.. We ran towards the cat and it was Sayif in a puddle of blood (I spare you more details), still breathing. I panicked.. I said to my neighbour ‘but he’s still breathing’.. ‘he’s still breathing! What do I do?’ I ran back, into my flat, took the cat carrier put one of these round cushions in it and ran back to where Sayif was. There was a car coming and I frantically waved to signify to the driver to slow down. I lifted Sayif up into the carrier and ran back to my car, took my neighbour with me and back to Sayif and rushed to the vet.

This vet is one of the best. She really cares. There were other people in the waiting room, but my neighbour quickly explained and I rushed through. My hands and sleeves covered in blood. She checked him and gave him valium and cortisone and said he is in no pain right now, as he is comatose. The check revealed that his heart and lung where absolutely fine. He had nothing broken, nothing, except the head… After a while he even peed and she said that is a good sign, meaning the bladder is not torn. She was very hopeful. She said she had seen much worse, but told me that it could all go either way and that I should think about having to have to put him to sleep. She even told me about herself, having had an accident (recently or not, I’m not sure) where she had hurt her head and her brain had swollen in three different places, but that it all healed and that she was now fine and standing there, back at work.

She said, she would give him a chance out of ten that he would survive and I said, we’ll try. All the time – for about two hours – I held and caressed him, said his name and asked him to hang in there, but I was not confident at all. Other clients came in with their pets and the vet dealt with them outside, in the waiting room, explaining each time, that there was an emergency case and everyone understood. At around 8.30pm I left and went home, exhausted. My neighbour had already walked back home much earlier (she would have stayed I guess, but I think the idea of driving back with me scared her, as I had driven like mad while hearing her asking me to slow down). The vet had said, that she would check on Sayif every two hours (because of the Baxter). She asked though, if she could call me, should she see that he got worse. She did not want to put him through any unnecessary pain. She said she never sleeps well and I said I don’t either and we agreed that she could call me any time of the night. I left and was so worried about having to take the decision to have him put to sleep. I arrived home and first went to my neighbour, thanking her for having been there. She said she was very shocked and had gone to her daughter’s who had given her something to calm down. My neighbour is a very small and frail woman, who has lost her husband only about a year ago.

I went to my flat to check on Brokie. She wasn’t home, but after about 20 minutes and me calling her, she turned up. We went inside and I just sat down on my bed and stared at her. She jumped on my lap (which she rarely does) purring. But then she started smelling my sleeve, stopped purring and left to sit at the window.

The call came much earlier than I expected – at around 10.30pm – and the vet told me that Sayif had thrown up, had taken one last breath and had just died. I drove there and it was not a pretty sight, but I had to touch him and stroke him. He was still warm... .. there was one little tear in the corner of his eye, which I wiped away. He was still warm.. In all this mess, I had the presence of mind to take my camera… I don’t know why, but I had that urge to take one last picture. The vet laid him into the round cushion that I had brought earlier and it looked like he was asleep. My sister who was there with me, was quite shocked I think, seeing me taking a picture. The vet explained to me that Sayif had not suffered and with the medicine she had given him, he had no realisation of what was happening to him. She said it to comfort me. Next to Sayif’s cage was a black cat and I inquired about it. She said that the cat had an operation on the left side of his mouth and she was waiting for him to properly recover to operate the other side. The cat was looking at us, very scared. We left the vet and my mother was waiting outside. I did not feel like talking and then we all left for our homes.

Kelda, I have read the article on grieving cats. You know, I had thought about keeping Brokie inside for a few days, too worried she would go searching for Sayif. Today I did not go to work. I did not sleep well and woke up very early. During the day though, I lay on my bed and Brokie came to keep me company.. she stayed with me for 3 hours or so at least. Then my mother came and we talked a little. I had closed the cat door and the door to my garden, as I wanted to keep Brokie inside, but she became very very restless (as she does sometimes), which really stresses me. I did let her go outside. She is so very and overly playful which is weird. She played with me in the garden, left the garden, but quickly came back and played some more. When my mother left, I took Brokie on a little stroll (like both, Brokie and Sayif loved to do with me following them). She did not seem disturbed in anyway at the non-presence of Sayif. On the contrary. Like I said, she seems overly gleeful. The idea of facing the next few weeks (or longer) and Brokie’s behaviour worries me a lot though. Keeping her indoors at night or during the day when I am at work is going to be stressful for Brokie and for me. I don’t want to lock her up inside, but I am worried that she will start looking for Sayif and possibly put herself in danger. I let her go outside earlier today and she is finally back inside. But she keeps pacing back and forth and making little sounds.  I try to talk to her in a normal voice and keep giving her her favourite treat. But I fear that she will not calm down.

I think writing this down helps. But I have eaten almost nothing for the last 30 hours or so and didn’t sleep much either. I’m cold quickly and feel shivery and tired. But I can’t help feeling silly to cry over a cat. My pain seems so small, compared to those who lose a member of a family.. a father..

Still, thank you all for those lovely words of support. Marge, I am sending you more hugs and hope that you manage to be strong. Time will heal the wounds, but right now, it is hurting so very much. I know.

Sayif, I will remember you for:

o   Looking after your brother Sahaba, when he was ill
o   Eating constantly
o   Sleeping on my legs at night
o   Loving to catch the rest of the water in the hose after I watered the garden
o   Walking like a panther
o   Making a lot of noise when checking on me
o   Trying to defend your place from that neighbour’s big black cat
o   Coming to great me in the morning after I had a shower, not even letting me dry up properly and then jumping into my arms and resting your head on my shoulder, purring like an engine
o   Sleeping on your back with all four paws up
o   Bringing back the little stick I threw, just like a dog
o   Giving your mum some space. Sometimes.
o   Catching every little fly
o   Being part of the BM family
o   The two years I had you cuddling, purring and spending time with me daily
o   Letting me give you the last moments of your life, free of pain. I hope.

~ I miss you ~

Firstly Marge & Mikalea - sorry to hear bout your dogs.

Jude - I was really worried about Skimble for a while but I learned it was cruel to keep him inside when he is so used to being an outside pet. And like you say, Brokie wont travel far for the moment... he'll be picking up on how you're feeling too and want to make sure you're okay.

{{{{{{{MIKAELA!}}}}}}} - I send you my thoughts of strength and kisses! Hang in there. Cuddle your dog and carress him. It will comfort him. And you.

Elle, hugging you back! Thank you for always being there. My neighbour is such a sweet lady. She is living alone now and her daughters keep wanting to giver her a cat, but she refuses. She is too afraid of the pain and sorrow of losing a cat. .. I am sorry that she had to see Sayif and go through this tragedy.

Kelda, you are right. I didn't (couldn't) keep Brokie inside this night. She was so restless. I don't know what is going through her mind, but she seems to check out every little sound she hears.. She does come back quickly from her night strolls though. During the day she sits on my lap regularly, purring, sleeping. Now she is sleeping on the ironing board and I check on her every 30 minutes or so and she instantly starts purring when I arrive. She is so strong.

They are/were/are THE most photogenic cats.  Even with the very sad parts, I find this thread so joyous and satisfying.  Thank you for sharing the beauty you live with, with us.

Hey j.U.d.E., I'm thinking of you.  How are you doing?  :-*

Hey j.U.d.E.

Thank you Elle!  :-* That clip is so sweet! The kid sings better than I do and he's still wearing diapers! Great rock future ahead, surely!

I am ok-ish. Brokie has basically been outside (night and day) for the last 2 weeks.. and hasn't eaten much. She seems 'happy' though, but is always on the look out.. Yesterday, though, for the first time, she was inside my flat, when I came home.. AND she has been eating tin food again (hand fed though..) instead of only raw chicken. Maybe she is starting to calm down.. It is very sad though, to see her on her own all the time. She sure misses the company and Sayif's presence (.. I'm tearing up again.. I thought that I was done with that...) and all the noise he made.. Really sad..  :'(

I am going home now (lunch break) - have been doing so for the past 2 weeks, to check on her.

Thank you Kelda! I hope so! It is getting better but she's is still outside most of the time. Because of bad weather she has been staying on my roofed terrace over night, but she did come inside. .. So far I can't see that she has lost weight, so I not too worried.. but I am .. always.

Today is the first time I did not go home at lunchtime.. I hope she is fine. I am going home now.

Thank you Elle, thank you Kelda. Thank you for your support.

Brokie is indeed changing her behaviour. She has been inside for the last couple of nights and yesterday evening she stayed in my bedroom at the window for quite some time (grant you the window was wide open and she could have jumped out any time (I live on the ground floor)).

I thought I was done crying though, but yesterday I received the card from the crematorium and it was very sad.. very sad to receive this card. I miss Sayif.. all the noise, the running around, the cuddling, the incessant eating.. It's so da*n sad!..

I am often have the images of 12th of June back in my mind and I really really wonder, if he was hit by a car actually or if it was something else.. I wonder. I don't want to know, but I wonder.. I wonder and I am angry and I worry about Brokie.

He was such a beautiful cat, j.U.d.E, and funny.  I always feel joy when I look at pictures of him and Brokie.  Now of course the joy has sadness alongside, but still joy.  He had a happy life, don't you think?

Thank you Elle. I guess yes, he had a happy life. But what a way to go.. Today's been one month that he's gone. I was napping earlier today (with Brokie at my side - she is starting to behave 'normal' again slowly) and suddenly I was right awake - in my dream I had heard a loud screaming miauw from Sayif.. My neighbour (the one who found Sayif on the street) told me once that she firmly believes that cats have a higher sensibility in so many ways (her last cat died at 18 years to the day one year after her husband died) and I want to believe that Sayif was there.. somewhere. .. Brokie did not move at all, though.

I am not at my own PC right now, because mine crashed totally a couple of days ago (remember I have had trouble with my PC for.. well forever really) and I am so so angry, because I think that I will not be able to access my hard drive anymore ... with all the cats' pictures... so angry. Good thing that I have many on BM that I could retrieve and save again (once I bought a new PC...).

I'm trying, but it is not easy. I am starting to see Brokie getting back to 'normal' though and that is a good thing.

You will, 'cause now she's glued to the flat.. and glued to me. I feel like she has 'given up' on finding Sayif, which makes me sad. But I guess it's better for Brokie. Also I'm torn. I don't want to take another cat - it would mean too much stress and you never know, if the two cats get along.. And it's sad, because the second cat should be Sayif.. But then again I am worried that Brokie feels lonely. She doesn't seem to be, but I think she could be a little lonely. I don't like having caged animals, but maybe it would at least be some 'company' for her. But hamsters, rabbits, birds etc. don't go together with cats very well, right? I'm torn. Maybe a turtle.. pffft.. I could get a tiny little dog, but that's too much work and not very practical when I want to tavel..  :-\
