I finally got around to putting "Roar" on my Netflix queue, and I'm glad I did.

Heath must have been 17 or 18 when this was made, but he already shows his star quality. It's a fun, not-too-serious romp involving Conor (Heath in leather pants) as the orphaned prince attempting to unite the disparate tribes of Ireland against the Romans in 400 AD. He's got his loyal band of friends--diverse and with good humor. There are nasty villains to keep it interesting: The Roman Queen Diana (Lisa Zane, sister of Billy) looks more Greek to me, and her confidant the mysterious Longinus (Sebastian Roché) almost steals the show as the 400-year-old former Roman centurion cursed because of his role in Christ's death. The show (actually created by Shaun Cassidy) doesn't try to be historically accurate, and involves a fair amount of fantasy/mysticism. It's been compared to Xena and Hercules (which I don't really know).

The first four episodes, on disc 1, were entertaining, and are generally self-contained stories. I was surprised at the level of acting, and at the gorgeous cinematography. Occasional cheesy special effects can be forgiven. It was filmed in Queensland, Australia.

Actually, it's listed as 1997-2000.
Oh yeah, totally. And the date up by the title at IMDb is 1997. My mistake.
