And without further ado, and a week after I started my little fitness vacation, here is the opening chapter of "Agents of the Law."

And we're off!   Yay!!  Don't tell the other boys, but I think I've developed a crush on Joe!     That was so great getting to see him at home and it's clear he really does take enjoyment in his children.  I love how he relates to Jeremiah - he'll make a great lawyer for sure  :)  I'm glad Wes is going to "sleep on it" - it's a tricky situation.  And I hope the fact that Dupree said the free time was making him nuts doesn't mean he and Nicky were arguing the whole time  :-\

 at "Mormon" Park becoming private property!  Thanks, Louise!

Well, they were all in rare form, weren't they?     And Ellery "Mr. Diplomacy" Cantrell talking about how Dupree and Esteban aren't "diplomatic" is priceless!     But, oh boy, Jeremy and Esteban working together - Henry's going to have his work cut out for him.  But who knows?  It might be the best thing for them.  At least Nick won't be jealous of Esteban!

But I'm afraid Wes may have a big "I told you so" thrown in his face regarding Lewis Stevens!

And, yeah, it's probably a good idea for Colson to go back to work  :-\   Poor boys.  Even the "Queer Book of Sex Etiquette" can't help them!   Thanks, Louise!

well yes, as soon as Ellery perks back up and gets his "edge" back so too returns his less-than-diplomatic personality!!  But even Wesley Brown has been known to be wrong.

SPOILERS

Little wonder Jeremy loves his Nicky - he's so unpredictably adorable.  It's sweet to see how seriously he's taking his role as caretaker to his "invalid."  And Pam spilling the beans on Katie's Ann "comment" and Jeremy trying to say he must've "missed" her flirting was hilarious!   Can't blame Nick for going off into his fit of laughter! Hey, look at it this way, Jeremy - at least he's not jealous!   ;D

Jeremy is right that Colson would want to know the situation with Katie Ann being gone, and I think it's cute that Nick wants them to "adopt" Pam, albeit temporarily.  Nick's laughter aside, it looks like he and Pam are forging a bit of an alliance, which should prove interesting.

Oh, and Dr. Sampson is now able to test for HIV?  That should be interesting, too!  Great chapter, Louise.  Thanks!

Nick doesn't just do jealousy - he also does reality...! and I am sure he has a very good idea about just how likely Jeremy would be to give either of Colson's daughters a second glance!

Nice to see they're finding more things in common, and I like how honest Henry was in admitting to the deficiencies in his mind-reading skills!

And I see Henry takes his Boy Scout training seriously.  Not only is he true to his "Scout's honor," he follows the official motto to always "Be Prepared."     Wonderful dialogue!  Thanks, Louise.

uh oh, don't tell me there's an army of prosecutors out there with Tupperware bowls in the mini-fridge in the DA's office!?

hahahah.  and thank you, Marie - I'm not sure what I'd do without your daily comments on my chapters!

Okay super spoiler here:  during my insomnia of Sunday night I was mulling over the possibility or likelihood of Paula, Henry, or the both of them, having unprotected sex, even if only once, and I played out the entire story line in my head.

And then I backed out and thought... there is NO WAY a 30 year old woman with that much law school behind her and a good job, PLUS a single 40 year old local man with a long history of comfortable bachelorhood, would ever come together to throw caution to the wind in a moment of passion.

But tell me I'm wrong here.

Stellar dialogue between and among everyone! Nice to see that Carol had a date.

It'll be interesting to see just how low Stevens keeps his head.   I think it would be fascinating to watch Henry deal with him.   Reynolds absolutely cracks me up  - brightening at the request to clean the coffeepot!     Every office needs (and usually has) a Reynolds.   Mighty interesting sequel you've already got going here. Thanks, Louise!

Yes, they all have a Reynolds, I'm sure!  And re: Stevens, he was the officer in charge of the investigation of Pete Perdue's assault who screwed up the APB to apprehend Wilson Brand in Taking Chances.  And I wonder whether any of you remember who Drew is?

Hmmm..... well, I'm not sure you could say NO WAY - I mean, never say never, right?  And even though Paula and Henry both seem to be eminently practical, who's to say that a night of classical music followed by too much good wine wouldn't cause either or both of them to be less careful than usual.  Or Henry could just have the bad luck of buying a box from a bad batch of condoms!  ;D

SPOILERS

It's always nice to listen in on Colson and Edna's coffee break chats.  They both love Ellery so, and I like that Colson is able to get a little "mothering" himself.

Sticky situation with Katie Ann and Laura.  Laura is still her mother, after all, and little Stevie her brother.  And from the sounds of it, the chances of big Steve taking time off of work to care for Laura or his son are nil.  I just hope she isn't roped into staying there too long.  Helping out for a couple of days is one thing, but taking on Steve and Laura's responsibilities long-term is another!  And, somehow, I think Pam is going to enjoy being "adopted" by Jeremy and Nick and getting undivided attention from Colson and Edna.  If Katie Ann gets wind of that, I'll bet she hightails it back to Tourmaline -  "toot sweet," as Wes would say!     Thanks, Louise!

These two are so great together.  In some ways, Nick is still young - but he's also smart as a whip and very insightful.   Not much gets past him. He'll make a great investigative report. And he could give Ellery a run for his money in the colorful language department!

So what’s the deal, you show up an hobble around the office, just ta make sure somebody else don’t piss on yer fire hydrant is that it?”

  But Jeremy has a point that he's not your typical rookie.  He'd be very pleased to know that Ellery already pointed that out to Wes.

Nick leaned in and chucked him under the chin. “Cause I’m the only one that listens ta every word ya say an actually gives a shit about all of it, ain’t that so? There’s a reason why I’m jealous a anybody who pays you too much attention, cause I want ta be the one doin it.”

Awwwwww.   There's his "Nicky" again.

Hmmmm... when that happens it means they got laid, sweet thing. Don’t be so naive.”

  Yeah, he doesn't need his "investigative reporter" skills to suss that one out!  Thanks, Louise!

*slaps forehead*  Of course.  Why didn't I think of that.  I wonder how receptive Katie Ann will be to Edna talking to her about it - she'll be more diplomatic than Pam, but still ... the realization that she was being so obvious and that the issue is being discussed among the rest of the family has to make her embarrassed and uncomfortable.

Oh no! about the poor mare.  The string of bad luck with medical issues has spread to the animals now.  Thanks, Louise!

I knew you'd figure that there was a theme of "everybody has an accident/injury/illness simultaneously" going here first, Marie!  The fact things like this don't ever seem to happen to Edna or Wes is also part of the plot!

yeah.  I am a subscriber to Henry Caulfield's "gestalt" psychology, in that I believe there aren't a lot of TRUE accidents, and that there are psychological reasons for a lot of what happens to people that are part of their makeup, and that people resonate to one another - the closer they are, the more they resonate.  And some, like Colson, don't end up on the receiving end of colds, petty ailments, stress ailments etc because he sees himself as a provider and protector, and it makes him insane to be helpless.  Ellery, conversely, falls prey to just about every stress, strain, injury or illness because he is always running his engine too hot, not doing what's right for himself, and no longer able to get away with it the way he did at 25, and ends up needing someone like Colson around who isn't easily derailed.  (Note for the lurkers:  Mary Sue characters never have this profile, because they are wish-fulfillment characters, and someone like Ellery is far too flawed to be anyone's wish-fulfillment dream!)

Nick may end up being an Ellery in 15 years if he keeps pushing, but he's got military discipline around exercise, but Jeremy is caught up in the resonance of the stress of the station and suffering from his first big career challenge which is starting to make him fray at the edges.  But Wes and Edna have a rhythm in their lives, and while the other people they know and love go through High Drama, it only just touches their living room and occasionally their guest room, but doesn't alter the steady state they have achieved over 40 years creating a state of calm that Edna enforces by chasing Wes into his den to talk business, and never lets it completely consume their lives.  It's only those extremely well-organized, steady-state people who can truly anchor a community, and really give to others, because they don't live from one High Drama of their own to the next.  Can you imagine a major accident needing emergency coordination during a winter ice storm like we had in "Chesterfield", but Wes can't come to the phone because he and Edna are having a knock-down drag out fight over Aunt Julia, and he goes MIA while Joe flounders trying to handle the personnel shortage?  Not gonna happen.

Louise, that was fascinating - and all so very true. One of the many interesting things about Nick and Jeremy is that they seem able to kind of switch roles sometimes in being the "protector" and the "protectee."   :)  And they both have that military training, which helps their relationship in more ways than one.  They are at different stages in their lives, professionally, so, yeah, right now Jeremy is under the gun.  But as he continues his education and especially if he sticks with his plan of being an investigative reporter,Nick will have his turn to be under the gun, too.

I love what you said about Wes and Edna.  There have been so many times that we've seen her stop Wes from talking police work at the dinner table and, yes, chase him into his den to keep it where it belongs!  But I've never taken the time to stop and ponder how deliberate this is and how it is just one of the many building blocks that make them the "well-organized, steady-state people" that they are.  And, oh Lord, cousin Julia!  Haven't thought about that old battle-axe for a while!

Always great to see Joe in action - and this sensitive conversation with one of his brethren, so to speak, was an insight into the human condition indeed.  He makes wise use of his equanimity to get what he needs.

“There’s no reason not to try, but not until I’ve picked the bones clean here,” Joe said.

Oh, I bet Joe is a fine bone picker! Thanks, Louise!

or two... I didn't leave work till 5 tonight because I took time off during the day and landed a new home for September.  So that is out of the way.  Tomorrow I won't be free till the afternoon, so ... I guess - look for something then!

*yawns*

Holy moley am I tired!  But then again, I did start the new book and have written 15,000 words in it.  I just need to go back and reread before going forward, and ... it takes time.

If it is pouring tomorrow morning I will NOT be going out hiking in the park!!! It might be a good day to check out that fitness center up the street.

We're finally underway again!  I had a bunch of errands to run, then the internet was down, then I was hungry and exhausted and had to cook, and then... well I'm writing now and that's what counts.  I'm hoping to get it all done and uploaded in case a tornado really strikes tonight.

Ah, great to see Henry with a spring in his step!   ;D  Wes made me laugh with his second  “How’s the ADA?”  And I like Henry more and more each chapter.  He not only knows his stuff, he obviously makes it his business to educate himself in ways that will help him do his job well, i.e., Mormon history.

"I want ya ta go over an see Ellery Cantrell an find out why he is actin like such a loud angry sumbitch...."

  Well, part of just comes with being Ellery Cantrell, I think.  But I take Wes' point .....

And so it begins, Henry thought to himself.

Indeed.  I take it as a positive sign that Reynolds wanted Henry's professional opinion - and that he wants the "long answer."  At least he's not taking Stevens' word for it!   ::)  More and more it looks like Henry was hired none to soon!  This sequel is shaping up to be as fascinating as "The Persistence of Memory" and that's no small feat!  Thanks, Louise!

“She keeps... movin stuff around...” Wes muttered....

  Even funnier that Colson called him on it!  I imagine, though, that Edna is just as happy that the division of labor be strictly adhered to in the Brown household!

That sleepy smile and easygoing rapport with Wes charmed him, though, and Colson could feel himself want to say something, to add to the conversation... or to ask about the mare. Maybe there would be time to talk to him when he re-examined her. Wes had retreated to his study, and Colson found himself feeling awkward and ashamed...

Aw, Colson.  I found this very touching and sweet.  He's still coming to terms with things - and the compulsory celibacy while Ellery is recuperating is making matters worse.  Glad he was at the ranch so that he and Nellie could have their "talk."   Thanks, Louise.

Yes, our old friend Wes just -- being Wes!

I love writing about Colson's relationship with his horses, which sort of puts a bug in my ear to write more of that.  I spent 15 years with horses and there were a great number of private conversations!

Oh my.  I hate to say this, and as much as I hate physical violence, Katie Ann is sitting on my last nerve.  She calls Ellery - who is recovering from a serious injury - because her mother slapped her?  And why was she so pissed off when Laura said it was different for Katie Ann to march down and confront the "other woman"?  And, I don't know, was little Stevie really her motivation for going to Prescott anyway?  I think her embarrassment over Jeremy was a bigger factor.  I feel sorry little Stevie most of all.

Maybe I'm just in a crappy mood, but she needs to sit and have a cold soft drink somewhere, calm herself down, act like a freaking adult for once and head back home.  I'm tired of these damsel in distress calls to Ellery and her dad.  They went through enough of that nonsense when she was breaking up with Bud.  And I haven't forgotten how she blew things out of proportion then.  :-\

I'm glad Henry is there.  He understands the situation and it has to be helpful to Edna to have some support while they wait for the Colson and Wes battalion to arrive.  And what's this?  Another young doctor in town .... Thanks, Louise!

those young whippersnappers are popping up everywhere!  Yes, methadone is addictive as well, however its "reward threshold" is not as steep as morphine or heroin and that means that you don't go up as quickly and you don't go down as fast either - the loading of the drug and its half life are much longer, which makes it much safer.  For those addicted (and that means physically dependent upon, not emotionally tied to) morphine or heroin, the typical therapeutic approach is to replace the current dose of morphine by mixing it in parts and increasing the methadone while decreasing the morphine gradually in three stages until pain relief is steady, then gradually withdraw over 7 to 14 days by decreasing the dosage.  Cold turkey is a serious shock to the body and can produce convulsions and severe flu-like symptoms as well as emotional misery,  physical pain, debilitating headaches... I was never addicted to morphine but I have been to prednisone, and even following a doctor's withdrawal plan for it, staving off the withdrawal took literally months.  And I still had headaches - pounding, relentless headaches, and pain from head to toe.  There's no 'reward' sensation in the brain for steroids, either, I was taking them for asthma.  Withdrawal from morphine produces headaches, body aches, diarrhea, vomiting, emotional distress, insomnia... it goes on and on.

Ugh, that sounds absolutely dreadful!  And poor Ellery already has his share of "emotional distress" without the morphine withdrawal.  Thanks for the info!

Heroin addiction is arguably harder than morphine addiction, since it has less side-effects.  Heroin was developed in Germany in the mid-19th century as a "less addictive" and more palatable formulation for cough medicine than morphine - morphine taken in liquid form is extremely bitter - and the 'more palatable' formulation ended up being more, not less, addictive because it did not have the countering effects of extreme nausea, vomiting and diarrhea that morphine produces.  However, heroin and morphine rank up there with cigarettes as the hardest-to-withdraw-from (cigarettes not only due to nicotine but also due to the endorphin rush that comes from killing all of those bronchial cilia in the lungs.)

I take methadone daily for pain relief.  It leaves me with extreme body aches and pains if I dont take it on a regular scheduled
time period.  It happens on days I oversleep.  I wake up feeling like I have been hit by a mack truck.  It takes effect very quickly
however, after being administered.  I dont feel hi or giddy or any of those kinds of side effects though.  Certainly no diaharreah.  If
anything, its the reverse.  It must have some kind of effect on the appatite as well.  I have lost considerable weight since I started
taking it.
That is the last thing Ellery needs.
I have finally caught up with the story Louise, thank you very much for opening it to me..  Colson should send that daughter of
his back home "toot suit"  and tell her to mind her own beeswax.  Stay out of other peoples personal lives.......................

the lack of "high" from methadone is part of what makes it a preferable drug to heroin or morphine for pain relief, and for an addiction treatment program.

Yay for getting caught up - it's a formidable task if you fall behind...!

Janice, it's nice to see you  :)  I'm sorry about all your aches and pains, but I'm glad you're able to get some relief.

I agree that both of Colson's girls need to concentrate on their own lives - and not be interfering in his and Ellery's or Jeremy's and Nick's.

SPOILERS

Oh, brother, Stevens is a bigger pain in the ass than ever and I can't imagine that Jeremy showing up will do anything to improve his behavior.  I like all the cultural references with the classic Coke and the Ritalin.

“I don’t know yet, Drew. I might tell em he’s got ta use the alley from now on, but that’ll cause a problem for the State Farm agency I imagine.”

  And I think that's something Drew probably could've kept to himself!  ::)  It's not like Joe doesn't have enough on his plate!  Thanks, Louise.

Yes, he is... isn't he? a pain in the ass that is!

And Joe, well... Joe is Joe.  He's got his Classic Coke.  I didn't know this when I started this book, but it was July of 2005 when Coca Cola company began rebranding its machines for Classic Coke and withdrawing "New Coke" from shelves, considering it to be a taste and marketing failure, so I decided to make this a sort of an 80's culture reference that everyone would participate in if they were 'there'.

sorry I'm not on an every day schedule... I am getting ready to move on the weekend, getting ready to go on a business trip on Tuesday morning to St. Louis, and trying not to compromise my fitness plan, all while detoxing from potassium toxicity from a stupid blood pressure drug.

the doctor says I'm fine... and I don't have to keep a low-K diet any longer (I disagree, based on my level of recovering back pain) and I'm home again home again, eating a late dinner, doing a bit o' blogging and then I'll get down to real business.

Oh, yay!  Nicky and his Sweet Thing.  Can't get enough of these two, and as with C&E, I love watching the thrust and parry of their relationship because it's clear that it all boils down to a fierce love and respect.

I'm impressed with how adroitly Nick handled Pam.  He was polite, neighborly and mindful of her predicaments - but he didn't let her ply a dinner invitation out of him!     Well played, Nicky! Thanks, Louise.  Hope you're doing better!

Oh yes, definitely doing better, I've got my old formidable energy level back, made a clean sweep of my former digs and am now trying to find a mattress and box spring that won't put me out hundreds of dollars, and then I'll be assembling the piano and getting cozy!!

So, unless I have much-too-long a nap later on today I'll be at it again with the next round of Agents of the Law!

in re Nick: he bought her off with a half dozen eggs and 25 cents worth of milk so he can ensure some well-needed privacy with his sweet thing!

Hee hee, yeah.  I'm catching up on things and gradually getting my new home in order, and having Labor day as a half-day off (I brought some necessary work home which I requested, since I don't get paid for holidays), and I'm going to use that work as an excuse to beg off going to the State Fair with a friend... but the next stop for me is "Forensic Investigation" and "Police Procedure" so that I don't make an utter fool of myself as the story goes on! hahahah.

Oh, boy.  You know things are bad when we get not only a "damn" but a "Jesus Christ" out of Edna!  She and Wesley make a great team - very smart of her to get Henry on his way.

And poor Colson.   :(  What a nightmare this is for him.  He just want his Ellery - with his brains - back.

You know this is beginning to remind me of one of those lightbulb jokes.  How many people does it take to get Ellery to follow doctor's orders?  Thanks, Louise.

Oh, I like Dr. Boudreau very much!  He's handling Ellery quite impressively, all things considered.  And he specializes in immunity - which ties in very nicely with what Nicky told Jeremy recently about being tested.  But poor Ellery, for someone as intelligent as he is and with his law enforcement background, this entire process is all the more difficult.

And poor Colson, too. The situation - or I guess I should say situations - with the girls give him something else to focus on, but certainly add additional stress.  And, no, Colson, Ellery wasn't imagining Katie Ann's crisis!  I'm really enjoying watching everything fall together.  Thanks, Louise.

Henry is proving to be an invaluable addition to the department.  He hones in on the real issues and doesn't allow the extraneous drama to distract him.

Excuse me?” Henry blinked back at him. “Did you just insult my experience or did you just compliment my youthful appearance?”

;D   Oh, very good.  It's interesting that Sanchez compared Henry to Joe.  And his comment about Ellery was even more interesting, and troubling.  Reynolds has always been the subject of teasing and eye-rolling, but now there is some real animosity, resentment, and curiosity thrown into the mix.   :-\   They have their work cut out for them, that's for sure.  Thanks, Louise.

It exhausted me to write it. No matter how I tried that would NOT come out in one fell swoop - but things should go more quickly - just as soon as I deliver a design document for my customer.

Bad news for me: I had an MRI this morning and have a torn meniscus in my knee joint, which will require extensive physical therapy. But the good news is that I got a lot of relief from the ultrasound treatment, and stopped hobbling on my way home.  It'll be hobbling tonight but... I go back tomorrow, first to the PT and then to a new orthopedic doctor who specializes in rehabilitation of torn limbs!  I certainly have a torn joint if not the entire limb!

Work continues to kick my ass, and the intensity of the pressure is something I haven't felt since... oh let me think, 2001-2002 when I was building software systems to be deployed to Baghdad in the runup to the war!  And it isn't like this stuff is TRULY mission-critical.  in fact the entire NETWORK I am working on is not considered business-impacting!  But you wouldn't know it from the tension levels around there!  I've requested a special Indian Summer because I went out this morning in mukluks at 7:30 a.m. to get to work in time for another grueling session of what is known as "project re-estimating" in 3 inches of new snow.  Checking the calendar: yup, it's October 12.

argh!!!  I'll be looking forward to quitting time and my PT !!  and I'm down 34 pounds since July! whoo hoo!  When I lose enough abnormal fluid in my tissues I might possibly be able to exercise off some adipose tissue.  I now have a literal context for the southern saying "Fitting a seven pound rooster in a 2 quart jar!"

yep, she is.

Now I have a bit of a dilemma.  I just got the ending to the sequel of my first novel, which has been pestering the back of my mind since 2002.  And in conjunction with that sequel there is an anthology soliciting for novellas for which this book's theme and universe has a ready-made element to it.

and so I have to figure out what I have time for, considering I have just barely had time for THIS.  There is no deadline on the other story (original deadline was Nov 2) however the sooner I get it underway the sooner I can get it in and have a chance for it to be included.

But it might mean that "Agents of the Law" might get sidelined to one chapter a week.  Can ya stand it?

Sure, we can take it!  :)  After all, most stories don't even update once a week! We've just been spoiled.  Good luck, Louise!

I'll put it out there to the rest of the clan... you are right, I have been on this streak, with only a few breaks, for some time now, and with full time work, a full time kneebone (not a Legbone, a kneebone!) and a 40,000 word novella to write as soon as possible, it would really help if I could designate Sunday as Agents of the Law day and devote my daily writing time to review of The Princes of the East.

Which - if anyone wants it, I will be expanding on a relationship between a young Bithynian soldier, Isolt of the Sabirii, and his older mentor, the ulu commander Issarcha.

The novel it is based on, is here:

http://www.zebratta.com/Books/Princes/index.htm (http://www.zebratta.com/Books/Princes/index.htm)

I just put it into PDF form so if anyone wants the smoothed-down version in PDF I can send it to any mobile device platform! I've reviewed the first 150 pages of the Princes of the East so I'm confident it is at least solid!

Aw, that was a really touching moment between Colson and Ellery.  And Ellery speaking with the British accent is too funny!  As Colson said, "He's Ellery again" and that's good to see.

It looks like Katie's going to get some of that attention she's been gunning for, but maybe not quite the kind of attention she wanted.   :-\  Thanks, Louise - hope that cold gets better soon!

Oh, geez, poor Reynolds!!   Now there is something Wes really didn't need to know!     Or, I should say, shouldn't have needed to know if it weren't for certain overly-concerned-with-other-people's-sex-lives "weird religious nuts" in the department!  Wes's little conference with Drew should be another one for the books!!

Thanks, Louise - it sounds like a great visit!

And Julie is from Bettermost !  We had a wonderful visit, and I suppled them with THE COMPLETE WORKS free on DVD!  Because they were so gracious as to come out to see me while I was crippled!

Holy smokes!  That is fascinating stuff, Louise!  (And more than a bit scary  :-\).  I read your reply to Clara's comment and, though I knew a little bit about the FLDS, I didn't know a lot of those details about baptisms of the dead.  Yikes!

But Ned Flaherty heard more than he was supposed to ( he's GREAT, btw) - and now I'm worried for him!   Will he go to Wes with what he heard?  You always manage to surprise us.  Thanks!

definitely tonight, I am riding high on good news on the job front.  Tricare insurance for my delicate adrenal problem, here I come!

I ended up doing a bunch of rereading last night on the different threads of "Agents" so as to pick up the right thread and by the time I looked up from all of that it was 1:15 a.m.  So tonight... I have slept on it!

ETA:  now it's tomorrow, and I'm still doing software development.  ARGH!

...and having put in 70 hours in 7 days...

I went out for a re-evaluation of my knee today and never arrived due to my car getting totalled and being in the ER all afternoon.

So now... I not only have plenty of time to write... but I also have an entirely new crop of ambulance/doctor/narcotics/emergency, fire and police personnel who agreed to let me put them in the novel! muwah!!!

Make lemonade if all life has is emergency lemons I say... now at least I have fresh characters complete from real life!

I'm too sleepy and in shock from the accident to do much writing tonight but I have very little on the docket for tomorrow, and most of it involves going back and forth to the bathroom and taking narcotics!

Holy Crap, Louise!     Seeing it all laid out like that makes my head spin!

It was great to visit No. 4!  Paula and Henry have a very natural banter that bespeaks an already comfortable relationship - and they make a great team.

“Ellery Cantrell just became a far more puzzling character than he was a few minutes ago,” Henry said.

Henry, you haven't begun to plumb the depths of Ellery Cantrell!

I have to say, even though I wasn't the one saying the words, that felt good!     I doubt this is a permanent punishment, but it's drastic enough that it sends a strong message, even if it is temporary.   It rings so true, despite the irony, that the girls still resort to melodrama as a way of manipulation that they learned by example from their mother, even as they get a first-hand look at how self-destructive that behavior is.   :-\  Good news for everyone that Laura isn't actually pregnant, but still a very sad and pathetic state of affairs.

I'm so glad Jeremy offered to intervene - he seems like the perfect one for the job ( I hope! - this will take all his skills and then some).   Should be an interesting police report, that's for sure.   :-\  Thanks!

Well maybe it's an insight into the relationship an author has with his characters, but I couldn't stop chuckling at the phone-grabbing-and-grabbing-back scene and Katie sticking her head out the door when Jeremy banged on it.

Holy Shits - we need more fans!  And my head was already spinning. Which fire is Wesley supposed to (try to) put out first?!?

You’ll have ta forgive em, his chief deputy’s husband’s twin daughters are killin each other so that takes priority.”

“What?” Flaherty stared at Murdoch, who was transferring the call.

  Flaherty must think he just walked into the loony bin instead of the sheriff's office!

It was so great to see Ellery, even if we only got to hear his voice.  That man has a way with words, but I think these four summed things up perfectly:

Oh for fuck’s sake.

  At least he has a bit of a heads up to what Colson is going to tell him on the bat phone!  Thanks, Louise!

Oh my gosh - Esteban is in really, really bad shape all the way around!  I can't imagine how any of this can be resolved w/o serious and permanent  consequences.

And, once again, all roads lead to Ellery, don't they?  Kudos on such an ambitious tale, Louise.  It's truly fascinating.  Glad to see you're surviving the blizzard as best you can!

Shit, they're dropping like flies in Tourmaline! How big is that morgue? And what the hell is Mel thinking? Thank God Wes knows how to keep his head, but his chest pains are worrying me! Thank God Ellery is on his way, too - they need his considerable brain power and his Ellery-way of a running roughshod over everyone and keeping them in line. And it's a sure fire way to keep his mind off his own pain.

And you did answer one of my questions - Nick knows about his Dad. You know I worry about my Nicky! :)

OMG, I almost forgot - where the heck is Katie?  Still sitting there waiting for Wes to talk to her?  And Jeremy! I guess he's in transit on his way home?  Hurry, Sweet Thing - your Nicky needs you!

Thanks for the double-shot, Louise!

The bumper sticker on your car should read “Lawyers do it by the minute, and bill accordingly.”

    And you gotta love Henry and his devilish trickster smile!

So Katie's at the police station where she's about to be questioned by the Sheriff regarding her alleged assault on her twin sister with a paring knife and Pam is having some type of epileptic episode brought on by said alleged assault.  Poor Colson.  The last thing anyone needs is for Laura to enter the equation, but how long can they keep all of this from her?  And I'm guessing Nicky is also on his way to the hospital and if memory serves his mom had some type of health issues last time we saw her .... And, of course, Ellery's needed at the station but Colson could sure use his support at the hospital ... and now Henry's walking into a very unpredictable and explosive situation ... and that's not even scratching the surface of all the shit still flying around!  Ay yi yi!!

What a story!!!  Thanks, Louise!

I just made the final push on getting the final edits into "Tourmaline" and after I've slept, I will be resuming "Agents" in the next chapter as we creep toward the spine-tingling finale!

Will Little Nell Wayne die?  Will Dr. Sampson survive surgery?  Will Dr. Boudreau survive the next encounter with the now-exceptionally-ornery Ellery Cantrell, private citizen?  Will Joe succeed in heading Ellery off at the pass before he flies to Tahiti?  Will Colson go with him or talk some sense into him?  Will Katie get arraigned on assault charges?  Will Reynolds find out who put the body in the dishwasher?

And - perhaps most importantly - IS LEWIS STEVENS REALLY DEAD?

Will Little Nell Wayne die?  Will Dr. Sampson survive surgery?  Will Dr. Boudreau survive the next encounter with the now-exceptionally-ornery Ellery Cantrell, private citizen?  Will Joe succeed in heading Ellery off at the pass before he flies to Tahiti?  Will Colson go with him or talk some sense into him?  Will Katie get arraigned on assault charges?  Will Reynolds find out who put the body in the dishwasher?

And - perhaps most importantly - IS LEWIS STEVENS REALLY DEAD?

"Little Nell"   OMG, Louise, cue the organ music!   ;D Just  terrific storytelling! Thanks!

That was a perfectly coined name for our dear Wayne.  He has been the largest portion of the humor in this story.
I hate to think that he won't continue to provide Ellery with the aggravation that all children give their parents.  The
smack downs that Colson has the chance for, that gives him the opportunity to release the pent up energy and
rage that he carries, from his three kids.  The girls and his most spoiled one of all.  His dear Ellery.  My point is
that he is a key in this story like not many others.

very true, if Colson is a parental figure here, then Ellery is his most troubled child :)

Working on the next chapter as we speak.  Ironically, I suppose, the minute Ellery gets off morphine, I get a prescription for it!

I guess it's to have the full PO-lice experience!

SPOILERS

WHEW!  All caught up, finally! I guess one advantage to reading in chunks is I got to read Sid's list and your list and it helped me to make those mental checks in my mind.  Holy moly. Mel has got himself in one fine mess.  And I'd love to see someone try and put Ellery in a straight jacket.  I don't think so!

Thanks, Louise!

about time you showed up!  And you will be very relieved to know that a) chapters will start getting posted more regularly as I lead up to the finale of " Agents of the Law" and formulate its sequel because - YOU KNOW THERE'S A SEQUEL TO THIS!

And copy #3 of Tourmaline is still awaiting your order, due to my unemployment and transition to the West Coast once again I had to change my priorities and schedules and we will be going to print at the end of the month!  And it will be a whopping 400+ pages!  I didn't abridge a single paragraph!

Chapter 69. I may edit it later, it seems somehow... lumpy.

I have gotten past my "lumpy"judgement and pronounced that chapter good.

Believe it or not, I am working on determining the end-point of "Agents of the Law" - which naturally, has a follow-on cliffhanger.

Will Little Nell er Wayne die or will he, Lazarus-like, pull through once again?  Will Ellery wake up and be sane again?  Or will he fly to Tahiti?  Will he stay "quit" ?  And what happened to Pam?  Will Katie get charged with assault with a dangerous weapon?  Will Joe get to meet the shady Emilio Lago and face down Ellery's would-be killer - his FIRST would-be killer, that is?

But perhaps most importantly - is Dr. Sampson going to pull through from his injuries?

And is Lewis Stevens going to survive emergency surgery?  Is Pedro Sanchez ever going to show up for work to relieve Joe?

All this and more in the upcoming sequel to "Agents" - but as soon as I catch up on sleep and my stomach settles down I'll be able to write the final chapters of this volume.

Okay folks, so now that Upgrade Hell has been downgraded to an optimistic "Heck" it looks like I'm going to have mental space to deal with completing this book.

I'm going to be leaving work in a bit, going to stop at UPS and the Post Office to send some things off that I don't need to be dragging around Idaho with me, and then ... dumdumdum...

And I look up and it's the 16th of June. holy cow.

Yes, it's now 12:30 am., I put in 24 hours in the last two days  - at the contract I'm on, and the hours are burning up on the contract so quickly that I should be able to take not only all of tomorrow afternoon off but part of next Monday! :)  Friday was already a day off.

And how does this affect the completion of " Agents"? easy - I'll have time to write in between trips to UPS and the post office as I execute the last three weeks of work here and get back to my 'real'life, which is sitting here writing chapters.

Hi Louise. I know surprise huh? I know I havn't been around for a long time, but I wanted to let you know I am still reading your stories. I know I havn't commented but I've had an awful lot going on in my life these past 2 years, so I havn't had a lot of time for that.

How are you? I see you havn't lost your touch. ;) Keep up the good work.  :)

Yup I surely did. Poor Ellery is having a rough time at the moment isn't he? Glad Colson *talked him out* of going to Tahiti.  I don't think he could ever leave the police force. It's in his blood. He loves it. Keep up the good work Louise. :)
