Think how Stephen Stills must feel--he auditioned for a role on that show and didn't make it!

Save me a rockin' chair, Leslie, hon. I'm right there with you. :-\

*singing*
HEY HEY ITS THE MONKEES
and we like to monkey around
we're too busy singing
to bring anybody down!!
ok I know I have it wrong...anyone remember the words?? I just remember the first line and the tune!!
-
It seems to me that they just keep repeating those words over and over and over and over again. That was their theme song right?
I always liked them doing Day Dream Believer. I have a friend who is a wonderful musician that has remade this song. It's so great. He bought permission to record it and now has it on his latest CD. it's a slower version than the original, but I actually like it alot more. 8)

"I'm a Believer" was written by Niel Diamond.

Yes I know that. Thats a great song too. And lets not forget " Take The Last Train To Clarksville" I always wanted to take that train just to see where it went. :)

I was being gently gestated in my mother's womb on that historic evening, so have no recollection of the event...and yet, I'M feeling old these days myself!

They did not repeat the same thing over and over again. It was great song, really deep lyrics. For those who need a reminder:
MONKEES' THEME SONG
The Monkees
Here we come
Walking down the street
we get the funniest looks from
everyone we meet.
Hey, hey we're the Monkees,
and people say we monkey around.
But we're too busy singing,
to put anybody down.
We go wherever we want to,
do what we like to do.
We don't have time to get restless,
There's always something new.
Hey, hey we're the Monkees,
and people say we monkey around.
But we're too busy singing,
to put anybody down.
We're just trying to be friendly,
come watch us sing and play.
We're the young generation,
and we got something to say.
Hey, hey we're the Monkees,
You never know where we'll be found.
So you'd better get ready,
We may be coming to your town.
Hey, hey we're the Monkees,
and people say we monkey around.
But we're too busy singing,
to put anybody down.

In a supersmart marketing ploy, the Monkees first album was released a month before the show premiered. That got all of us teen idol girls gushing and anxious and waiting for the show. I owned this album, wore a big rut in the vinyl.

Did he? The way I heard the story is that he suggested to his friend Peter Tork (real name Thorkelson) to audition and Peter did get picked.

The one who wore the hat all the time...what did his mother do?

You are both right! I interviewed Peter Tork a couple of years ago. Here's what he said:
He moved to New York and played guitar in Greenwich Village coffee shops. One day his friend Stephen Stills (later of Crosby, Stills and Nash) mentioned that he’d auditioned for a sitcom about a rock band.
“Stills was turned down … he was told his hair and teeth wouldn’t work for television,” Tork said. “They asked if he knew anybody who looked like him whose hair and teeth were in order, and he called me.”
Peter Tork was fantastic, by the way. Friendly, funny, relaxed, intelligent, candid (for example, he told me the Monkees never hung out together socially -- they were just coworkers) ... I interviewed him by phone, only for maybe an hour and a half or so. Still, one of my most fondly remembered interviews (I've done hundreds, if not thousands). I would have liked to meet him in person. Judging from the photo on his website, he's still pretty cute!

The first one is way too easy for me. I'll leave it to someone who can't recite them in his/her sleep.
His mother invented liquid paper. And I've often heard that he, incidentally, is one of the fathers of the modern music video (I'm not sure why they say that exactly, but they do).

Lat,
Thanks for that interesting information! Peter Tork is still making music, actually, and will be here in Maine this weekend. He was on TV last night which got me started on this whole Monkees thing in the first place.
Yes, Michael Nesmith's mom invented liquid paper, or whiteout. And yes, I have also heard that he had some major role in the development of music videos but I don't have time right now to track down any facts. Anyone else?

Mike Nesmith - Michael wore the hat was an excellent musician, became a powerful music producer, didn't know his mother invented liquid paper. That's a new one.
Peter Tork
Mickey Dolenz
Davy Jones

I think they all had some music background -- some more than others, maybe -- but despite that it's not them singing or playing on most of their songs, especially the early ones.

I remember seeing the Monkees TV show in reruns. ;D
Leslie, I can understand.....I remember talking to someone younger than me about the 80s pop group Exposé and the reply was "Who"?
So I showed them this video....

They replied, "Never heard of them, but I know the song." and then they showed me this....

I used to LOVE the Monkees! They were my absolute favorite group, and I loved their TV show. I used to cry whenever it was pre-empted for some reason. My favorite Monkee was Peter. They were all so cool! I saw them twice in concert in the 80's when 3 of them were touring - Davey, Peter & Mickey.
-
Yep I was a Monkees fan too, owned all their LPs, and still have one even though I don't have a record player now. Mike was my favourite and my favourite song was Daydream Believer. I watched their tv programme religiously.
-
Ya wanna feel old? I remember Mickey Dolenz when he had his own TV show. He was about 11 and starred as "Circus Boy."
