Title: JGL JGL JGL (a thread for Joseph Gordon-Levitt)
Post by: Ellemeno on April 26, 2010, 12:10:37 pm
I'm surprised to discover there is no thread at BetterMost devoted solely to Joseph Gordon-Levitt, so here we go.

I'm embarassed to say that I don't know who Joseph Gordon-Levitt is. Or, at least at the moment I don't remember the Brokie connection. I may need to find an "embarassed"  emoticon after this.  But, please remind me!

JGL starred in 10 THINGS with Heath and he has gone on to do some terrific work. I loved BRICK (tho others didn't); MYSTERIOUS SKIN was phenomenal; and 500 DAYS OF SUMMER was also fun.

Also of note is that he played Elder Ryder in LATTER DAYS - terrific physical comedic scenes.

As a kid he was in Third Rock from the Sun on TV, with John Lithgow and Jane Curtin.

I was prompted to start this thread because of the comments section on the page below, about Inception, the new movie JGL is making with Chris Nolan, the director of The Dark Knight.  It seems like the world in general is waking up to what we noticed a while ago, that JGL and Heath would have been a good fit together as they evolved as actors.

Also, there is talk on this page imagining JGL taking on The Joker role in the future.   :-\

     I have always thought he was a wonderful, fully rounded actor.  He can play
serious drama, and great comedic parts too.  He is great.  He looks more like
Heath, the older he gets.  All he needs to do is get that dirty blond curly hair.

from Perez Hilton website today, I wish I could get the four photos to transfer over, dangit:

Look who is all grown up and super seksi!

Joseph Gordon-Levitt covers Detail Magazine this month as part of the promotion for his new flick, Inception. We must say, he has certainly grown into his looks from his 3rd Rock From The Sun days.

We like! We like!

Here are some excerpts from his Details interview:

On if he was frustrated after 3rd Rock From The Sun: “I would answer that question with a resounding yes. I was scared and depressed for a while. Not that I had any reason to f–king be depressed—I mean, I was going to college and everything. It was not like I was hungry. But absolutely. I was like, ‘S–t, I don’t know if anybody’s gonna let me act. They’ll let me be in another sitcom, but I don’t want to do that. This is terrible.’ Yeah.”

On one day being hunted down by paparazzi: “Look, I’ve met some nice guys who take pictures like that. I don’t want to demonize anybody. But I do think that this notion that certain people are in a higher class than other people is unhealthy. We would be healthier as a people if we quit paying attention to that kind of bulls–t and paid more attention to more pertinent things and more beautiful things.”

On curbing his pot smoking: “When I was in high school, I loved smoking weed. I loved it. But I cut myself to once a month. That was my rule. And so as the first of the month came closer, my friends would be like, ‘All right, what’s the plan this weekend?’ And actually it’s really cool—when you do it that infrequently, you can really trip. In hindsight, could I have smoked weed on the weekends? Yeah. But it was cool to do it once a month. I still do that sometimes—I go on little weedfests. I’m a pothead. That’s my drug of choice.”

Maybe he should hook up with Chace Crawford and Paris Hilton for his next movie! We think they would all have A LOT to talk about!

I wish I was that gate.  He's so pretty, with his sleek, shiny Pantene Pro V hair.  I bet he tasteses good.

With all them stitches on his arm, he probably needs somebody to help him wash himself.  I'd be happy to do the job.

Whenever I've had stitches, they told me not to get them wet.  Maybe I'll just put a plastic bag over his arm, secure it with a rubber band, ask him to hold his arm up over his head, and then hose him down with the back yard hose.  Maybe squirt some nice body wash on him before I turn the water on.

Did see him in Inception a couple of days ago, he was very handsome. He was dressed very polite and in a 1930 upperclass style with his black hair backwards.
And he climbed the roof and walls very well ,so, perhaps we have the future spiderman.  :)

Loved that movie. Saw it at Film Forum in 2004. I don't have a television, and obviously I'd never seen Third Rock (still haven't), so when a friend and I went to see Mysterious Skin, and (before the show) he said "This is the kid from 3RfromTS, I said, "Who?" (or, rather, I probably said, "So?") and immediately afterwards, I said, "Holy Shit!"

That was a good movie.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt: the new Heath Ledger?
Joseph Gordon-Levitt may be the star of the unexpected hit of the summer,
but he has his mind on bigger things

Joseph Gordon-Levitt's eyes don't feature on the poster for (500) Days of Summer.  Hair? Yes, carefully tousled into an emo mop. Stubble? Check, though more dappled than grizzled, in keeping with the genre – 500 Days  is a whimsical romcom for the Wii generation. Lush eyelashes are especially well showcased. But the only clue to his mood, as he peers down at a T-shirt featuring stills from the film, is his smile: rueful, demure – an embarrassment of dimples. Face to face, it's a similar story: Gordon-Levitt has tiny eyes – dark dashes buried in big sockets that lend him an odd look of permanent upset, as if, not so long ago, he might have been crying. Add to that jet-black slicked-back hair and a slightly Boris Karloff bone structure and you've got quite an intimidating prospect. Lips up, at least.

This isn't just teenybop anatomising. Gordon-Levitt's eyes and mouth are crucial. His early career was all about the latter: he grinned his way through 66 episodes of the aliens-on-Earth sitcom 3rd Rock From the Sun,  was sunnily sweet in ads for Pop Tarts and Cocoa Puffs ("Mmm, it is chocolatey!"), in A River Runs Through It  and in the doggie romp Beethoven.

Then, just before he went to Columbia University in 2001 (history, literature, French poetry) Gordon-Levitt shot a film that first made full use of those eyes: Maniac, a wobbly-camera, micro-budget drama set in a young offenders' institute. There was a similar focus and intensity to those movies he made post-college: Mysterious Skin,  in which he played a traumatised gay hustler; Brick,  a doomy high school noir; The Lookout,  about a brain-damaged janitor; and the Iraq vet tragedy Stop-Loss.  As its poster suggests, (500) Days of Summer  – the chronology is shuffled for dramatic oomph – is different. It's funny. "It sure was nice to just go to work and have fun, to be flirty," says Gordon-Levitt. "The last few movies I did, the characters were in a lot of pain and struggle. But it helped because in fact this character does go through a bit of pain and I wanted to bring an emotional honesty to his heartbreak."

Indeed. As Tom, a greeting cards writer who falls for and subsequently loses flighty Summer (Zooey Deschanel), Gordon-Levitt concretises hopes he could be a great leading man. He's moving and amusing and immediately empathetic, far more the film's lynchpin than its apparent muse: Deschanel is so wide-eyed and emotionally vacant you suspect more anti-depressants than commitment phobia. He cheerleads enthusiastically for the film: he loves its sincerity (he dislikes the phrase "anti-romcom" for its suggestion of cynicism), its honesty ("The writers wrote this film for catharsis; most movies you can feel you're being sold something"), and its modernity. "I'm proud to be in a film that's not beholden to the norms of the genre. These are nuanced characters, they're not put into boxes. Even today, in our progressive times, in most movies that come out, the men have to have biceps and the women have to be thin or something."

Yes, I say, it's curious how a lot of his characters, even the bruisers, have had a touch of femininity about them. His smile slips slightly. I stutter on: you know, they're quite vulnerable. "Vulnerable? Sure, sure, sure – you said 'feminine'". Yes, a touch? Has no one ever suggested that before?

It appears not. There's some to-and-fro about whether women are more vulnerable then men. The nameless flunky by the door shifts in her chair a little. "Maybe you mean that I tend to be interested in movies that show what's going on underneath someone's facade?" Well, yes, that too. But there is something feminine about Gordon-Levitt's appeal – certainly about the character he plays in 500 Days.  Tom has about as much control of his romantic life as Michael Cera's character in Juno. It's Tom who's on a dedicated quest to find his soul mate, Summer who prefers sex to nesting. He who overinterprets her every word. She who suggests they split up because they've been squabbling: "We've been like Sid and Nancy for months." He protests – he's hardly Sid Vicious. She's amazed he could misinterpret: it's she that's Sid. "Oh," he digests, "so I'm Nancy."

It's the sort of gag that might have turned up in 3rd Rock,  an underrated sitcom if ever there was one. But however first-class a training the show no doubt was, the Big Giant Head (the alien bureaucrat behind the foursome's mission) must cast a shadow over a young career. No wonder Gordon-Levitt spent so many years swimming away from the mainstream. It worked, too: these days the name he's most commonly mentioned in the same breath as is Heath Ledger, whom he worked with on 10 Things I Hate About You,  and whom he resembles; indeed, he's just finished shooting Dark Knight  director Christopher Nolan's latest, Inception.

"I never intended to only do dark, serious things. I just wanted to do good stuff. And it's just a lot less common to find good stuff that also manages to be funny." Does he think there's still some snootiness about the genre? "There's an absolute prejudice that good movies are dramas and comedies are more dismissable. But I couldn't disagree more. I think a lot of the best movies are comedies and they're harder to make. Comedy takes a very specific technique, specific skills. Drama is different. Someone who's never acted before can give a great dramatic performance if they just forget the camera is there and be real and feel it. You can't with comedy. It's much more practised and precision-oriented."

Gordon-Levitt has been acting for about two decades, serious about it for all of them. "I hated doing commercials," he told an interviewer a couple of years ago. "It's embarrassing what they make little kids do in commercials." His parents met as socialist activists in California. In 1970 Jane Gordon ran for Congress, standing for the anti-Vietnam Peace and Freedom Party. His father, Dennis Levitt, was a radio news producer. Such a background has not left Gordon-Levitt feeling guilty about being an actor. He finds the suggestion a sad one. "I think the stories we tell and the way we tell them are far from trivial: this is one of the ways we all grow up and learn to make meaning of the world and learn how to be people. I know for me the movies I watch and the music I listen to and the books I read have a real impact on my life. It's easy to lose sight of that and just call it a business. And the people that are most guilty of that attitude are people who work in movies."

Why do people do that? To dodge the responsibility? "Precisely, because it's easier. Then they're not responsible for what they're doing."

An impulse not to follow suit is presumably what, last year, prompted him to make an online video entitled Politics Is Bullsh1t,  a four-minute film that spliced old news footage with a voiceover explaining how he didn't care about politics until Barack Obama came on the scene. "I wanted to make something describing the way a lot of people, especially my age, feel – which is that there's no reason to get involved [in politics], or pay attention or vote." But it's not a personal take? "No, that's not how I felt. But I'm not in that video. I was playing a character. He's just a young American."

It's an admirable risk: unless you were briefed, I fear you would suspect that he really was that flippant. Rather, he's deeply excited about politics. When he speaks about the president, his eyes light up in a new way. "He impresses the hell out of me. What I love about him is that he communicates really well. He speaks and I respect and understand what he's saying." 500 Days, shot during the primaries, feels, he says, like a film that comes out of the age of Obama. "He speaks really sincerely and honestly, he's always humble and 500 Days is similar in that way – it's not a big flashy hum-dee of a movie."

I wonder if the similarities could be pushed yet further. Doesn't it make him nervous, the level of love people have for Obama? Won't the object of so much affection inevitably disappoint? He thinks, pleased by the parallel. "In a way it's tempting to project on to Obama that's he's some sort of great leader that will lead us into goodness. Which he never claimed to be. Tom definitely does project on to Summer that she's this goddess that will make his life meaningful. But what Obama is actually saying is: 'Look, I'm going to do my best; this is not about me. We have to do this together.' He can't change the world by himself. What he's done is say: 'Look what's happening – let's all get up and do something.'"

At the Sundance film festival earlier this year, where 500 Days  was screening, Gordon-Levitt took questions from the audience in a bright orange Obama T-shirt. He was also at the festival to debut Sparks,  a short adaptation of an Elmore Leonard story, his first film behind the camera. So, who'd be his model, as a director? "It's got to be Obama." Really? As a director? "Of course he's a director, he's exactly a director." He's smiling, but his eyes tell you: he's dead serious.

(500) Days of Summer is released 2 September.

I loved these.   My favorite is the French-speaking interview.  Impressive!  :)

While there was and ever will be only one Heath Ledger - but I can see a bit of a resemblance (career-wise too!), JGL is his own person and actor in his own right.  He seems to be quite a rising talent, I loved Inception and his role in it.   Next up is Mysterious Skin for me.   The Lookout trailer is very suspenseful!

Thanks,

Wow, i didn't know he spoke French, and beautifully too.! It's official, now I REALLY love him!  ;)  Also, I hope Godard does give him a call.
A small correction in "the New Heath Ledger?" article, that reform school movie that's mentioned is called MANIC not Maniac.  He's a very angry boy in that one.

Here is Joseph (voice only) challenging a couple of paparrazzi.  It's from a while back.

Thank you for the video, Gil!

Challenging, yes, but friend Joe was also--so human, so sane, and yes, even kind (even as he was letting them know they were  assholes--worse  than assholes).  Wasn't it something that the younger of the two paparrazzi slowly warmed to Joe's humanizing charm? Wasn't even the younger photographer becoming--well, not only friendly, but almost--a little lovestruck? (The older one was hopeless.) I think I could be enraptured myself, I think--

 ::)

I'll just add that Joe's video was filmed (around Christmas time) just outside of The Metropolitan Club (http://www.metropolitanclubnyc.org/default.aspx?p=DynamicModule&pageid=289137&ssid=168184&vnf=1) at 1 East 60th Street, a well-known private club, very exclusive, very  beautiful, more than a century old, about a (diagonal) block-and-a-half Northeast from the Plaza Hotel, and one block West from where I worked for ten years, from 1996 to 2006. I have walked past this amazing building nearly every day, it seems, all my life, and yet I have been inside only once or twice, the last time in 1998, for a luncheon after the memorial service of a former boss. I am not, obviously, a member of this  particular club--proximity does not equal access!  ;D

Anyway, next time you tell Joe you saw his paparrazzi-asshole video, and want to shoot the shit, it starts on the East side of Fifth Avenue, between 61st and 60th Streets, then turns around the corner onto 60th, just West of Fifth.

Just finished watching "Killshot" -- fairly good movie, all in all.  JGL was mesmerizing -- long, greasy-looking, dark hair, intense gazes, and an ass that would stop traffic.  He couldn't possibly look any more like Heath if he tried.  I kind of lost the plot entirely, just waiting for him to show back up on the screen again, so my jaw could drop.

Hey Monika, that was a good reply, thanks, you made me giggle at 5 am here in the Midwest.  I seriously didn't pay attention to the plot much, and I'm a huge movie buff, so I normally would.  Joseph is just so damned sexy (at one point, he gets down to his briefs), that it was hard to pay attention to anything but him.  I can completely understand why the director kept showing him walking down the street, in closeups.  Was like John Travolta in Saturday Night Fever, strutting along, except it was better than that.  I think I vaguely remember that he plays a killer, but who really cares?  Geez louise, it was just ridiculous how sexy he is in this one.  Highly recommended if you're a fan of his.

LOL!  Well, I´ll watch and see if I´ll be able to discuss the plot in more detail . Wouldn´t count on it though ::)

Hmm, hmm, hmm -- the plot, you ask?  Since I've watched it 4 times now in the last 24 hours, I can tell you this.  Mickey Rourke (looking absolutely unrecognizable since his gorgeous "Body Heat" and "9-1/2 Weeks" days) plays a professional, long-time, hardened, sad killer, JGL comes along and emulates how Mickey does his killing without any emotion, whereas JGL has to really be mad at somebody to kill them.  Diane Lane (beautiful, as always) and Thomas Jane are a married couple, separated but still in love, living up in Canada, who happen to come into the killer's paths by coincidence.  So, according to Mickey, they must die as well, because they got a good look at he and JGL and could ID them.  So, Diane and Thomas become part of the Witness Protection Program, and are moved, oddly enough to Cape Girardeau, Missouri, which is my neck of the woods here in the U.S..  Things happen, innocent bystanders die, blah blah blah.  The couple turns out fine in the end, the killers not so much.  Plot is not really the point.  Like I said, JGL with long, greasy hair and a fine, fine ass, playing a bad dude, looking more like Heath than is humanly possible without actually being his own son, is the point.  Even when he's covered in blood, running through the snow, with only one cowboy boot on, he is still eminently fuckable.  (Oops, am I allowed to say that?)

Enjoy  ;)

Yup, the story's kind of pointless, but "Oh my god!" is a good way to express JGL's screen presence.  Someone back on the first page of this thread, if I recall, said that he looks more and more like Heath as he gets older, and I'd say that's definitely the case.  At times while I was watching it, I had to remind myself that he isn't Heath.  It's quite shocking to see the similarities.  I think JGL will do well in his movie career, considering the diversity of roles he's played, and he's still so young.

OK, I've held off commenting as long as possible, but I can't resist the thought of JGL in cowboy boots, so Killshot is next on my list.    I've seen some intriguing still photos of it, and I love Diane Lane and Mickey Rourke.  JGL's such a great actor, and so appealing and sexy too.    He says he likes actors who are chameleons (I love actors who become their characters so much that they are barely recognizable too - hello Heath!), and JGL is a chameleon too.    He absolutely shook me to the core in Mysterious Skin.    Looking forward to this one.  :)

from Perez Hilton website yesterday:

Joseph Gordon-Levitt's Brother, Dan, Passes Away
Filed under: R.I.P. > Sad Sad

This is truly devastating news.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt's brother, Dan, has passed away.

The actor posted the following message on hitRECord, his new media project's website:

BURNING dAN brightly embodied that bold beastly bliss sometimes referred to as "the creative spirit." He was my chief collaborator on the foundational incarnations of hitRECord.org over the years and continues to inspire us ever the more. He would absolutely positively insist that we not let this bad news deter us on our collective mission. That said, I might not feel up to it for a little while.

Watching this community blossom into what it has become never ceased to amaze him and me. We would regularly marvel at it and high five. Thank you all for that. There he is now pouring heaping hollowed watermelons full of love over each and every one of us.

So let's celebrate him, he's fucking awesome:

See you real soon,
thanks again…
<3

There's no news yet on what happened, but he was actively using his Twitter account until Sunday night.

So sad.

Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones during this unbelievably difficult time.

R.I.P., Dan.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt's Brother
Dies at Age 36

By Michelle Ward

Inception  star Joseph Gordon-Levitt calls his older brother "my super hero," a free spirit with the nickname "Burning Dan" who "embodied that bold beastly bliss sometimes referred to as 'the creative spirit.'"

On Tuesday, Gordon-Levitt took to his Twitter page and Web site to announce the death of Dan Gordon-Levitt, 36, and celebrate the life of the fire-spinning artist and flow arts teacher at Flow Temple Arts School in Venice Beach, Calif.

He was found unresponsive in his Hollywood home in the early morning hours of Monday, according to the LA County Coroner. He was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The cause of death was unknown and an autopsy was pending.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt's Brother,
'Burning Dan,' Dies

By Brent Lang & Hunter Walker

(http://www.thewrap.com/sites/default/files/dan-gordon-levitt-died.jpg)

(Update, Wednesday, 2:45 p.m.:   A police source tells RadarOnline that Dan Gordon-Levitt died of a drug overdose. A spokesperson for the L.A. County Coroner's office did not immediately respond to TheWrap's request for comment).

Joseph Gordon-Levitt posted multiple announcements Tuesday evening indicating that his brother Dan has passed away.

The two brothers were partners in the multimedia website HitRECord.org (http://HitRECord.org), a community where artists and filmmakers to post their work and are connected with potential commercial productions.

The Gordon-Levitt brothers promoted the site at the Sundance Film Festival in January.

Dan Gordon-Levitt, known as "Burning Dan" for his involvement in the annual Burning Man festival in Nevada, was an active photographer and fire dancer. He founded the Flow Temple, a school and performance group for Flow Arts that was based in Venice. He was 36.

In his biography on the Flow Temple site, he described himself as "one of only 28 world-wide leaders of official Burning Man Fire Conclave troupes." And in a recent interview with PopEater, he called Flow Arts "a combination of performance art and dance and meditation and yoga and sort of self-transformation."

Born in 1974, he shared an uncanny resemblance to his more famous brother.

“It's wonderful to be mistaken for him," he once told PopEater. "He taught me to question the relationships other people have with their siblings because he would be my favorite person in the world even if I wasn't lucky enough to know him as my brother.”

Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who starred in the recent films "Inception" and "500 Days of Summer" announced the death of his brother on Twitter.

"My super hero brother @burningdan 1974-2010," he wrote.

He also posted an announcement about the death of his brother on the HitRECord website:

“BURNING dAN brightly embodied that bold beastly bliss sometimes referred to as "the creative spirit." He was my chief collaborator on the foundational incarnations of hitRECord.org over the years and continues to inspire us ever the more. He would absolutely positively insist that we not let this bad news deter us on our collective mission. That said, I might not feel up to it for a little while,” Joseph Gordon-Levitt wrote on the HitRECord site.

No cause of death was given, and representatives for Gordon-Levitt did not immediately respond to TheWrap’s requests for comment.

His French was a pleasure.  About as good as mine when I'm having a best day at it, which is rare now, due to lack of practice.  I wish him peace.

Here's an interesting link someone posted over at LiveJournal.  JGL doing a "cover" of a song his brother loved:

Wow, great!  Oh, I have always loved this song too - I especially love it sung in German "Völlig losgelöst".  It has a fantastic ending too.

I never realized that JGL was so musical - I love the songs he chooses and his interpretations of them.   A very creative guy.   I'm glad music is helping him through this difficult time for him, a little at a time.  Good to see him back!

Happy Thanksgiving! I’d like to get a bunch of RECords of people saying “thank you.” Mostly I want the audio, but anything else is welcome too of course. Could be any language as well.

Thanks again <3

Thanksgiving 2008 dan (http://burningdan.tumblr.com/) RECorded me playing this. Now I mostly like it for his gentle “thank you” at the end. So here, I cut and paste it into the rhythm of the music.

He found it sort of incredible when I told him just how much music throughout space and time is all built around the same three chords. And, in fact, that the intervals of those chords’ harmonies are suspiciously similar to the same golden intervals found in a snail’s shell or the Milky Way’s spiral.

By the by, for the origins of my — and our — attraction to that extreme and mean number known as Phi, here’s the short film I made, ESCARGOTS (http://hitrecord.org/records/9667).

Anyway, he was determined to acquire a natural sense of said same three chords, and so, two years ago, before the holiday’s family festivities began, he sat me down on his couch and asked me to play them. The teafaerie (http://teafaerie.tumblr.com/) was there too; you can hear her camera beep at the end. It’s no studio recording, and the guitar’s not exactly in tune, but dan actually had a pretty high-quality portable audio recorder, and he couldn’t hear small differences in pitch anyway ;op

After that, he listened to these couple minutes of audio more repetitively than I’ve ever seen anybody listen to anything. Especially when he was busy coding the v3 website for hitRECord. On his iTunes “playcount”, where most songs have one or two “plays”, and the second-highest song boasts a couple hundred, this record has several thousand.

thanks again <3

Chanson des Escargots qui vont à l'enterrement

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A l'enterrement d'une feuille morte
Deux escargots s'en vont
Ils ont la coquille noire
Du crêpe autour des cornes
Ils s'en vont dans le soir
Un très beau soir d'automne
Hélas quand ils arrivent
C'est déjà le printemps
Les feuilles qui étaient mortes
Sont toutes réssucitées
Et les deux escargots
Sont très désappointés
Mais voila le soleil
Le soleil qui leur dit
Prenez prenez la peine
La peine de vous asseoir
Prenez un verre de bière
Si le coeur vous en dit
Prenez si ça vous plaît
L'autocar pour Paris
Il partira ce soir
Vous verrez du pays
Mais ne prenez pas le deuil
C'est moi qui vous le dit
Ça noircit le blanc de l'oeil
Et puis ça enlaidit
Les histoires de cercueils
C'est triste et pas joli
Reprenez vous couleurs
Les couleurs de la vie
Alors toutes les bêtes
Les arbres et les plantes
Se mettent a chanter
A chanter a tue-tête
La vrai chanson vivante
La chanson de l'été
Et tout le monde de boire
Tout le monde de trinquer
C'est un très joli soir
Un joli soir d'été
Et les deux escargots
S'en retournent chez eux
Ils s'en vont très émus
Ils s'en vont très heureux
Comme ils ont beaucoup bu
Ils titubent un petit peu
Mais la haut dans le ciel
La lune veille sur eux.

Jacques Prévert
The song of the snails who are going to a funeral

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On their way to a leaf's funeral
Two snails go
They have black shells
And some crepe on their horns
They go in the evening
A very beautiful evening in autumn
Unfortunately when they arrive
It’s spring again
The leaves which are dead
Are all resuscitated
And the two snails
And very disappointed
But here’s the sun
The sun which said
Please take the trouble
Make the effort to sit
Take a glass of beer
If your heart wishes
Take if you wish
The bus to Paris
It leaves tonight
You will see the country
But do not mourn
I am telling you
It blackens the white of the eye
And then it is ugly
The histories of the coffins
Is sad and not pretty
Take your colours
The colours of life
All the animals
The trees and the plants
Begin to sing
To sing very loudly
The true song of life
The song of summer
And all the world drinks
Everybody drinks
It’s a very pretty evening
A pretty evening in summer
And the two snails
Return home
They go very moved
They go very happy
Like they have drank a lot
They stagger a little
But high in the sky
The moon watches over them.

There are no neat antecedents for the five men on this page. Like Ryan Gosling, none is a traditional leading man, action figure, or romantic-comedy arm candy. They are all too intense, too weird, too complicated. None is bankable. Do they think about their image at all? If so, it’s not central to who they are—acting might not be either: Polymaths Gosling and James Franco could well consider it a sideline. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is possibly more interested in collaborating with other artists on hitRECord (http://hitrecord.org/reel), his online production company. Jesse Eisenberg—arguably the first egghead movie star—hosts Olympic-class wordplay on his website OneUpMe.com (http://OneUpMe.com).

They are never predictable and often unlikable; their good guys are flawed, and when they’re bad, they’re horrid: Tom Hardy delivered the most aggressively strange badass in recent memory in Nicolas Winding Refn’s Bronson, then played Heathcliff. Hardy is known for his ballsy range, but that could be said of any of them: Fassbender will play the young Magneto in the next X-Men,  Rochester in a new Jane Eyre,  and Carl Jung for David Cronenberg. Eisenberg—who cut his teeth playing sympathetic motormouths in comedies like Zombieland —was clearly yearning to bite into a role as juicily cerebral as Mark Zuckerberg, The Social Network ’s ultimate asshole. In (500) Days of Summer,  Joseph Gordon-Levitt made the romantic-lead-who-never-gets-the-girl more appealing than the guys who do; he followed that with Hesher ’s singularly unpleasant sociopath. Franco, in one year, captured the devilish brilliance of Allen Ginsberg in Howl  and the rash bravado of Aron Ralston in 127 Hours.

Finding an actor with the charisma to spin a hit out of 90 minutes of a man and a boulder would have been tough even five years ago. But you can imagine all these actors doing something interesting with the role of Ralston (even if that involved Eisenberg talking his arm off). It would be hard to beat Franco’s performance, but that’s not the point. It’s that finally, there is a deepening pool of leading men who thrive on complexity. Even in a big studio film, these actors bring the raw nerve of the indie sensibility, and in so doing, they are reimagining the mainstream.

Hesher is the story of a family struggling to deal with loss and the anarchist who helps them do it—in a very unexpected way.

TJ is 13 years old. Two months ago, his mom was killed in an accident, leaving TJ and his grieving dad to move in with grandma to pick up the pieces. Hesher is a loner. He hates the world—and everyone in it. He has long, greasy hair and homemade tattoos. He likes fire and blowing things up. He lives in his van—until he meets TJ.

Hesher is that rare film that manages to be a completely original vision, a thoroughly entertaining story, and a provocative metaphor. Joseph Gordon-Levitt brings the character of Hesher to life with anger and angst, and Devin Brochu makes quite a splash as the young boy dealing with both the loss of his mother and an unwanted houseguest. Cowriter/director Spencer Susser crafts a multidimensional, darkly humorous film that exhibits an immensely talented storyteller at work. —Sundance Film Festival

The Lookout
2007
[youtube=425,350]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RFKRYBgjaYE[/youtube]

I finally got The Lookout from the library over the weekend, and I must say it's one of the best movies I've seen in 2010.  The time passed in an instant, watching it, because you're so deeply invested in JGL's character, as well as almost even feeling a kind of empathy for the bad guys.  (Except for Bone, of course, who is a heartless prick who reminded me, oddly enough, of Gene Simmons of KISS fame.) Here's one of the IMDB reviews for it:

An admired high school hockey player with a bright future foolishly takes a drive in the night with his girlfriend and two other friends with his headlights off with devastating results. The former athlete is left with a brain injury that prevents him from remembering many things for extended periods of time. To compensate, he keeps notes in a small notebook to aid him in remembering what he is to do. He also lives with a blind friend who aids him. Obviously, with the mental incapacitation, he is unable to have meaningful work. Thus he works as a night cleaning man in a bank. It is there he comes under the scrutiny of a gang planning to rob the bank. The leader befriends him and gets him involved with a young woman who further reels him in. After they get close and after reeling him in with his own failures, the bank plan unfolds. Confused but wanting to escape his current existence, he initially goes along with the scheme... Written by John Sacksteder <[email protected]>

I loved especially the portrayals done by Isla Fisher, Matthew Goode and from Jeff Daniels.  They were hilarious and heart-wrenching at the same time.  Never ceases to amaze me how Brits (Isla and Matthew) can pull off perfect American accents.  And JGL's performance, and the production design/cinematography/camera work, whatever you want to call it, just watching his face close-up in silence, pondering something, is incredible.  I just wanted to reach through the screen and give him a giant bear-hug.  If you rent the DVD, make sure you watch the Special Features where JGL is talking about his research into playing the part of a moderately brain-damaged young man.  This came out in 2007, but I hadn't heard much about it until I decided to check out everything my local library had with him in it.  The more I see of him, the more I believe he will be one of the greatest actors of our generation(s).  Please share your thoughts if you get a chance to check it out.

And BTW, I've now watched Killshot (see my previous posts on earlier pages here) more than a dozen times, and still can't get over how sexy he is in it.  Hell, even when he's jumping on a wall, hanging by deer antlers, hysterically trying to threaten somebody, and landing flat on his ass, I'd have still hit that, LOL:)  Did you other folks here get to see that, and what did 'ya think?

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is in talks to sign on to Christopher Nolan's latest project, Dark Knight Rises.  The follow up to 2008's The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises has already signed on Anne Hathaway and JGL's Inception  co-star Tom Hardy. This isn't the first time rumors of Gordon-Levitt's involvement in the film have surfaced. Back in August 2010, Gordon-Levitt's rep denied that he'd be playing Batman foe The Riddler (http://nymag.com/daily/entertainment/2010/06/dark_knight_2_rumors_return_tw.html) ("This is not true" he said), so we're curious to see if he denies the story this time, too. Finally got around to watch Mysterious Skin today. Creepy movie! JGL does an excellent job but sometimes he looks so much like Heath it hurts. I feel confident we will see a lot more of JGL in the years to come. He has a sensativity that not many actors possess or at least can bring to the screen. I hope he finds his "Ennis", a role that is, that he can really shine in.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt
Is Alberto Falcone
In ‘The Dark Knight Rises’

by Germain Lussier
Posted on Saturday, March 19th, 2011

(http://bitcast-a-sm.bitgravity.com/slashfilm/wp/wp-content/images/Alberto-Falcone.jpg)

The speculation is over and sometimes, rumors are true. Variety  is reporting that Joseph Gordon-Levitt is indeed playing Alberto Falcone, [son] of former mob boss Carmine Falcone (Tom Wilkinson) in Christopher Nolan‘s The Dark Knight Rises.  We knew that Gordon-Levitt was cast in the film in early February and we speculated that the role could be Falcone a few days after. Carmine Falcone was a major villain in Nolan’s 2005 film Batman Begins  and his son, Alberto, is believed to be [The] Holiday [Killer], the main villain in one of Nolan’s favorite and most referenced Batman stories: The Long Halloween.

Variety  exclusively reported the confirmation (http://www.variety.com/article/VR1118034129), thought Warner Brothers declined to comment. There’s no word on if Alberto will actually become Holiday like in The Long Halloween  or just be more of a general nuisance to Batman, like his father was. But when we reported this rumor a few months ago, many of you agreed that it fit in nicely with Nolan’s story, both because Holiday, if he’s one of the villains, is very realistic and also because it brings the story full circle.

The original rumor (which was nothing more than, now very poignant, fan conjecture at the time) was that Falcone comes back to Gotham to try and reclaim the city Batman helped take from his father. Also, it made sense because Selina Kyle (Anne Hathaway) believes Carmine Falcone is her father in the Batman/Catwoman storyline Catwoman: When in Rome.

So this adds another piece to the puzzle of The Dark Knight Rises,  scheduled for release on July 20, 2012. Confirmed characters include Catwoman, Bane and Alberto Falcone. How do you figure they all fit in? Will the League of Shadows  reappear? How influential will The Long Halloween,  once again, be? Do you think Gordon-Levitt is right for this role?

Holiday or the Holiday Killer
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

(....)

Alberto Falcone

Although the youngest Falcone appears to meet his end on New Year's, Alberto Falcone turns up alive and well in September. After the murder of Sal Maroni, Falcone is captured by Batman and Jim Gordon and is sentenced to death for all the Holiday murders.

It becomes clear that Alberto faked his own death on New Year's Eve. A number of the killings after this point are to cover up that fact. Carmine Falcone's daughter Sofia tracks down the Gunsmith with intentions of finding out who Holiday is, but finds him dead. Dolan, the Coroner, is killed because he knows that Alberto is still alive. Carla Viti is killed as she searches through the police files on Holiday, possibly because of some clue to Alberto being alive is held within. Although the lack of a body cast early suspicion on Alberto, unused Tim Sale-drawn panels cut in early drafts showed Carmine Falcone weeping over a badly-decomposed corpse after New Year's. These pages were published, in penciled form only, in The Long Halloween' s hardcover edition.

Alberto's identity as Holiday becomes problematic when the first three attacks are considered. Johnny Viti was his cousin, albeit a traitorous one. The Irish were on Falcone's payroll, and Milos Grapa was Carmine Falcone's trusted bodyguard. There are many theories as to how or why Alberto committed these attacks, but since he has now expired, the truth may never be known. From Gilda Dent's confession, it can instead be taken that she committed all murders until New Year's. Post-New Year's, after Gilda ends her part in the murders (assuming that her husband, Harvey Dent, was continuing them), the killings generally benefit the Falcones: Sal Maroni's soldiers, guards, father (who had once attempted to kill Carmine Falcone, Alberto's father) are killed, along with finally Maroni himself.

Alberto's reasons for becoming Holiday are also the subject of debate. In the final issue, he claimed to have been lashing out against his father for never taking him seriously or including him in the family business. Alberto also seemed to be addicted to the dubious fame of being a wanted serial killer, as he appeared proud of his actions to the police in his confession. Also, one of the running themes of the story seemed to be the change in Gotham City from one plagued by mobsters to one ridden with "freaks" such as The Joker, Poison Ivy, and Two-Face.

During the follow-up, Dark Victory, after being released and placed under house arrest, a now-free Alberto was tormented by the voice of his father, which was actually the voice of the Calendar Man distorted by Scarecrow's fear toxin, under the orders of Two-Face. During this torment Calendar Man attempted to coerce Alberto into murdering his sister, Sofia Gigante, and toppling the Falcone crime organization. Alberto rejected the voices before he would shoot Sofia in the manner of a Holiday killing. Two-Face then attempted to use the voices and the corpse of Janice Porter to convince Alberto to commit suicide, which backfired and allowed Alberto to discover the deception. Calendar Man shot Alberto during the subsequent fight, becoming unable to prevent Sofia from smothering him to death. The character will be portrayed by Joseph Gordon-Levitt in Christopher Nolan's third and final Batman film, The Dark Knight Rises.

The Inception actor is tipped to take on the role of Robert Todd Lincoln, the eldest son of former US President Abraham Lincoln, reported Deadline.

Tommy Lee Jones is also entering negotiations to play Republican leader and congressman Thaddeus Stevens, in a cast which already includes Daniel Day-Lewis as the 16th American leader and Sally Field playing his wife Mary Todd.

Based on the best-selling book, Team Of Rivals, by Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Doris Kearns Goodwin, the screenplay has been written by the Pulitzer Prize-winning and Oscar-nominated writer Tony Kushner.

Lincoln, which will be co-produced and directed by Steven Spielberg, will focus on the political collision of the President and the powerful men of his cabinet on the road to abolition and the end of the Civil War.

Filming is expected to begin in Virginia in the autumn, for release in late 2012.

Joseph is set to reunite with Christopher Nolan for the filming The Dark Knight Rises this summer, while Tommy Lee will be seen in Captain America: First Avenger.

Nothing about that trailer appealed to me, except for JGL, Natalie Portman, and Rainn Wilson (who all do appeal to me).  Looks dreary.

Sometimes I kind of wish he wouldn't look as much like Heath. In the above movie poster, I easily could have taken him for Heath (at least in this small size of the pic, as I saw it first) - it's a strange feeling.

Here's an interesting link someone posted over at LiveJournal.  JGL doing a "cover" of a song his brother loved:

http://hitrecordjoe.tumblr.com/post/1697672281/major-tom-coming-home-originally-by-peter

I just reread this whole thread.

Imagine my surprise about the above quoted.
I never knew there was an English version of Major Tom, or that anyone outside of Germany actually knew the song! :o
I really disliked NDW* when it happened, and still dislike it today. But Major Tom was one of the few songs from it I did like.

*NDW = Neue Deutsche Welle (literally: new German wave ::)). A flood of German singing popstars with incredibly stupid songs and lyrics, which were suddenly totally hip in the 80ies. But then, I never liked the 80ies too much anyway. I boycotted the attire, I boycotted the hair, and for a good deal also the music. I was a teenager and simply against anything others liked, lol. I was the girl who never missed a chance for strife.

In other Brokie news, though, Anna Faris' new movie, What's Your Number? did not fare as well: 1 star.

   Warning... slight spoiler alerts here.  Don't want to know any info..leave now.

       I went to see the new JGL movie "5050" this evening.  I Loved It.  It  was particularly striking to me, because I had just dealt with health issues.  It was a pretty scathing indictment on the medical profession.  It shows how they treat many patients like they are simply statistics and case files.  Telling a patient he has serious cancer, by talking into a file, and the man only finds out he has something deadly by being accidentally exposed to Dr. talk.  It is so reminiscent  of my own time in the hospital.
  It is sad, funny, and very unfunny at the same time.  As is the entire movie.

  Joseph G Levitt and Seth Rogan were great.  Anna Kendrick was wonderful as well.
  Brice Dallas Howard, too as the unworthy girlfriend was truly believable.  All in
  all I highly recommend seeing it.   Enjoy.

Peter Schilling (born Pierre Michael Schilling on January 28, 1956, Stuttgart, Germany)[1] is a German synthpop musician whose songs often feature science-fiction themes (aliens, astronauts, nuclear holocaust, etc.). His 1983 album, Error in the System,  generated his only international hit single, "Major Tom (Coming Home)", a retelling of David Bowie's classic 1969 song "Space Oddity".[1] Although the song was originally recorded in German, the international hit version was sung in English. The song was recently featured in an episode of the fourth season of Breaking Bad.  (And etc.)

Hi Penthesilea and all,

Yes, I was a bit of a New Waver back in the 80s, at least musically!  :)   I wasn't very familar with the NDW artists, but had heard a few.   Pete Schilling was one, thankfully.  I heard this song in its original and German versions on my favorite alternative radio station, and fell in love with both.  I've loved it ever since.   The refrain has such a shimmering quality (a great song for driving!) and a great ending, and I love hearing "earth" in German.  And what a creative idea, continuing Bowie's Major Tom story.   I love languages, not fluent in any except hopefully English, but I love them, and music.

Thanks for the Fresh Air interview with Joseph and Will Reiser, very enjoyable.  I was surprised when the interviewer asked Joe about his brother's death so directly, but he handled it with grace.   I really like Joe as an actor, a lot.  Hoping to see 50/50 this weekend.  It's getting wonderful reviews!

Anyway, here's my fave version of the song, auf Deutsch:

Hello lovely page-likers! Mad exciting update time! On Monday, at the HitRECord Fall Formal in L.A., a song I co-wrote 'Telephone' was performed by the incredible Sia, my French song 'Le Petit Soldat' was sung by HitRECord director Joseph Gordon-Levitt himself (along with the amazing Anne Hathaway and a fellow hitRECorder) and a poem I wrote was read by Gary Oldman! Le Petit Soldat

Je vois ton petit visage
Dans les nuages, dans le vent
Dans mes larmes
Quand ils tombent constamment

C’est dommage, petit fils
Que tu est mort dans la vie
Sans espoir et plein de maladie

Tu as vu petit soldat
Tante tristesse et douleur
La misère dans les yeux
Brises mon coeur

C’est ma faut t’es perdu
Dans un monde d’inconnu
Tu as crie mais personne n’intendu

Rétournez a moi
J t’attendrais toujour
Rétournez a moi
N’ayez pas jamais peur

Joseph Gordon-Levitt On Occupy Wall Street,
Filming The Protests & The Web

When the massive production caravan hauling "The Dark Knight Rises" descended upon lower Manhattan last month, there was speculation that the Batman epic's director, Christopher Nolan, would work to somehow incorporate the Occupy Wall Street protesters into his film. And while that didn't quite come to pass, one of the movie's stars decided to take a camera down to Zuccotti Park and explore the scene on his own.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt's timing couldn't have been any better.

As it turned out, the 30-year old star found himself Tuesday in the thick of the volatile struggle between protestors and the New York Police Department, which raided the park earlier in the morning and cleaned out the nearly-two-month-old makeshift tent city. Gordon-Levitt ended up shooting about three hours worth of footage at the scene, he told The Huffington Post Tuesday night at the premiere of "50/50" co-star Bryce Dallas Howard's new short film. Despite the fevered pitch at the protest sites, he was very encouraged by what he saw.

"I had a lot of long conversations with all sorts of people -- kids, older people, some cops -- I talked to some people who look really rebellious, I talked to some people who were wearing a suit," the star said. "I talked to all sorts of people and everyone's just feeling really positive and optimistic. They look around and they see people who are on the same page, and they're not going to just sit around and say, 'Oh, there's nothing I can do,' and it's reassuring, it's exciting."

He said he was moved in particular by the call and response public address system dubbed the people's mic by protesters. It was "beautiful to see," he said.

It's no surprise that the makeshift open platform appeals to Gordon-Levitt, who runs an online collaborative production company, HitRecord. Just getting the message out, he said, was a major improvement over his last round of First Amendment-flexing pavement pounding.

"You know, when I was like, in college say, I remember when in 2003, when the United States started bombing Iraq, and we marched in protest, and no one gave a fuck man. No one paid attention; no one wanted to talk about it," he remembered, growing animated. "Now, for various reasons, I guess because partially things have gotten so bad and I think partially because of the Occupy movement, it's become a topic of conversation and people are willing to talk about it."

from Belfast Telegraph today:

Levitt: directors wouldn't hire me

Tuesday, 29 November 2011

Joseph Gordon-Levitt stars in new comedy 50/50

Joseph Gordon-Levitt has revealed he struggled to make it big in films.  The 50/50 star had his break in acting aged 15 in TV comedy Third Rock From The Sun and has since starred in hit films (500) Days of Summer, Inception and the upcoming Batman film. He revealed he learned French "pretty well" while he was still studying, confessing he wanted to be able to speak to French girls.

He joked: "I suffer from Francophilia. I think that's partly from movies and partly... French girls are just really sexy to me."

What began as a personal project — an online screening room where actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt could share the fruits of his creative labors with the public — has, over the past few years, morphed into an impressive, interactive online salon.

HitRECord.org (http://www.hitrecord.org/), where tens of thousands of contributors now bring their original music, text, illustrations and footage, lets people really “share” their work — not in the YouTube sense of simply posting something and hoping for an enthusiastic response, but in the true spirit of collaboration. Work posted to the site is regularly adapted or “remixed” by other users. Next week, a new book from HarperCollins“The Tiny Book of Tiny Stories” (http://hitrecord.org/store/tiny_book.html) — collects some of the best pieces.

When he’s not working on a movie (you know, small films like “The Dark Knight Rises” and “Lincoln”), the actor still posts material to the site himself –including several hours of raw footage (http://www.hitrecord.org/records/569295) from his visit to Occupy Wall Street on the mid-November night when protesters were evicted from Zuccotti Park.

Over the phone, Gordon-Levitt talked to Salon about the origins of hitRECord, the joys of editing and his high hopes for an OWS-inspired project in the near future.

Can you talk a little bit about the inspiration for hitRECord — how it started, and whether you ever expected it to grow into what it is now?

Well, it started a long time ago, and no — when it started, I really, to be honest, did not expect it to become what it has. It started as my own kind of moniker for my own self-expression, when I was making little videos and doing bits of writing and music and just kind of acknowledging to myself, when I was in my early 20s, that as much as I really loved being an actor, that wasn’t all I wanted to do.

HitRECord was this web site where I would put up these little things that I made, and over the years this community sprouted up around it. After a while, I sort of said, why not — rather than all these people just talking about the things that I’ve made, what if we started making things together? And it actually started going really well — and so it very, very gradually and organically grew, and then at the top of 2010, we started it as a professional production company. And we’ve been going strong since.

In a 2007 interview with Salon’s Andrew O’Hehir (http://www.salon.com/2007/03/28/gordon_levitt_2/singleton/), you called hitRECord an “alternative outlet” where you could “be a little less professional and just freak out a little bit.” Is it less of that now that it’s a bigger project? Can you still relax as much?

That’s really a very interesting question. That’s hilarious! Back in 2007, not a lot of reporters were asking me about hitRECord. But you’re 100 percent right, actually. In 2007, it was very informal. And now it has become quite a bit more professional.

Personally, I enjoy that. If I’m hanging out with my friends and we’re just making something for fun, I’m the guy who’s like, “It’s not done! Put your drink down! We have to finish this!” I don’t know if it’s because I’m a workaholic, or just because that’s what gets me off — making something good — but the fact that hitRECord is more professional hasn’t really changed any of its [appeal]. I’m still doing it for the same reasons; it’s not like now it’s a subdivision of some larger corporation and I have bosses that I have to answer to or anything like that. It’s still what I love to do, the things I love to make — it’s just that now I’m doing it on a much grander scale, with a lot more people.

You posted some videos from Occupy Wall Street a couple of weeks ago; in some of the footage, you were interviewing people you met on the street. Do you enjoy the fact that this project lets you be on the other side of the camera — not only as a director and artist, but also almost as a journalist?

Yeah! Very much so. I’m of the opinion that the news and show business are basically two different genres of the same thing. Whenever I watch the news, or a documentary — to me, it’s all someone telling a story.

I was really inspired going down there to Occupy. And I’m really excited about what hitRECord and I will make together [about Occupy]. My footage is just three hours of footage from one night. But since I posted that, there’s been a ton of different contributions; people putting up their footage, writing out their thoughts — and then people downloading the footage that’s up there, and cutting it together in different ways to say different things. It’s really just begun. … We haven’t made anything yet that I would consider finished and screenable, but soon we will. And I love it.

All the hitRECord contributors whose work was selected for this book will be paid a cut of its earnings. Do you think other content-sharing websites tend to undervalue talent by encouraging people to post their work online for free?

Yeah, that’s interesting. I mean, first of all, 8,000-some people contributed to the “Tiny Stories” collaboration, and I think 60 of those artists have work that’s featured in the book. So it’s not like we’re paying everybody who contributed — we’re only paying people whose work ended up in the final book that’s making money. But what I find really kind of touching, actually, is that when we do pay people, they tend to be way more excited about just the concept of getting paid, and getting to be in the credits, than the money itself.

Would you say that’s true of you, too, as an artist?

Me, I mean — I’m lucky. I was on a hit sitcom for years, so I made money. [That's] honestly been a luxury that’s afforded me the opportunity to do all sorts of work in my life, as an actor and on hitRECord. I was able to do movies like “Mysterious Skin” and “Brick” and “Manic” in my early 20s — movies that don’t really pay very much money — because I had made money on TV, just to be honest. And those are movies that, because I was able to do  them, got me jobs in the future. I guess the reason I’m bringing that up is, I wouldn’t be so naive as to say that money doesn’t matter. It costs money to make a movie. It costs money to publish a book. That’s why hitRECord is a for-profit company in the first place. Back in 2007, when your colleague asked me that question, hitRECord was nothing like that — there was no money at all. And I thought long and hard about bringing money into the equation. The reason that I ultimately decided to do it was that I wanted to do things like this: I wanted to publish books. I wanted to have shows in big theaters. I wanted to eventually make TV shows and feature films. And to do those things, money is necessarily going to be part of the equation. That’s why hitRECord is a for-profit company. But I think ultimately, the reason why anybody who’s on hitRECord contributes their work to hitRECord is not to make money, but because they love doing it.

Where did the “tiny stories” idea come from to begin with?

The idea came from this artist named “wirrow,” who joined the site in the spring of 2010. He’s a really wonderful, virtuosic illustrator, writer, musician and animator, and he’s done a bunch of great work on hitRECord. He started this collaboration called “Tiny Stories”; he said he got that concept first in a bar, when he wrote a story on a beer coaster, and left it there for someone to find.

He started posting little illustrated tiny stories on our site, and people just really liked doing [their own] — it’s sort of perfectly conducive to our collective, creative process.

Would you say you have a strong editorial presence on the site, and in this book? Do you read or see most of the things people post every day?

I spend quite a bit of time on hitRECord, but there’s absolutely no way I could read everything. There are a thousand new records a day right now. It truly is a collaborative effort, and a communal effort. I didn’t see all 8,000 “Tiny Stories” entries, for sure — but the community kind of goes through them, and the things that resonate with the community pop out, whether that’s because several people recommended them by hitting the heart button, or because several people “remixed” them.

Now and then I’ll find one that I like; oftentimes I’ll tweak it a little bit, rewrite it some, which is really fun for me — I get a big kick out of that kind of game, the challenge that comes with thinking: Here’s a cool idea for a story; how can I change these words around (if it needs it) to make it as brief and as graceful as possible?

What’s your dream for this project — in five, 10 years? Will you stay involved? Do you have an ultimate goal, or are you just enjoying the ride for now?

It’s both. I have lots of very ambitious goals. We’ve been touring around, doing live shows; that’s really grown in the past year. Last year we played at a 100-person capacity bar in downtown Manhattan; this year, we played a 2,000-seat theater in L.A.

I think eventually we could accomplish any number of things. I think we could have a TV show; I think we could make feature films. And most importantly, I just think that the further hitRECord is out there, and the more artists that want to contribute to it — the better the work will be. I’m excited to see what we’re making together in five years.

Levitt: directors wouldn't hire me

Tuesday, 29 November 2011

Joseph Gordon-Levitt stars in new comedy 50/50

Joseph Gordon-Levitt has revealed he struggled to make it big in films.  The 50/50 star had his break in acting aged 15 in TV comedy Third Rock From The Sun and has since starred in hit films (500) Days of Summer, Inception and the upcoming Batman film. But he told The Guardian there was a time when he only got offered TV roles.

Joseph said: "For a while, after [Third Rock From The Sun] no one wanted to hire me to do anything but a TV show, and I didn't really want to do that again.

"I'm grateful to a few filmmakers who took a chance on me, like Gregg Araki, who made Mysterious Skin, or Rian Johnson, who made Brick. These are guys who were able to see that I could play these other roles. I really owe them all my subsequent opportunities."

The 30-year-old actor added: "I'm sure luck has a lot to do with it, I wouldn't deny that."

When he was 19, Joseph enrolled at Columbia University, but then dropped out to further pursue his acting career.

He revealed he learned French "pretty well" while he was still studying, confessing he wanted to be able to speak to French girls.

He joked: "I suffer from Francophilia. I think that's partly from movies and partly... French girls are just really sexy to me."

Deschanel, Gordon-Levitt post New Year's Eve duet
AP – 9 hrs ago.......
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt are curious about your New Year's Eve plans.

The two actors perform a duet in a video posted this week on YouTube, musically asking, "What are you doing New Year's Eve?"

She plays ukulele and he plays guitar in the two-minute video of the 1947 jazz song.

Deschanel calls her "(500) Days of Summer" co-star "simply the best" in a note accompanying the video.

The two actors don't reveal their New Year's Eve plans in the clip, but they will be celebrating together in 2012. Both are nominated for Golden Globe Awards: she for actress in a TV comedy for "New Girl," and he for his lead role in the film "50/50."

Joseph Gordon-Levitt
Has His Beatles Moment at Sundance

By Jada Yuan

Joseph Gordon-Levitt may be known as a former TV star and a current movie star, but make no mistake, the man is also a rock star. The way his loyal fans began screaming as soon as the 30-year-old impresario bounded on stage Thursday night at Sundance's Eccles theater for a multimedia event touting his collaborative, art-creating, web-based production company HitRECord (http://hitrecord.org/), you would have thought Elvis had been resurrected, or at least that the Bieber was in the house. He proceeded to take complete command of the theater, running around and amping the already feverish crowd up to a boil, and this without the aid of a working microphone; when he realized it wasn't functioning, he threw the dead mike across the stage and grinned: "I probably shouldn't break Sundance's equipment." Minutes later: "I'm out of breath, I'm so fucking excited!"

The usual anti-piracy warning to turn off all cameras and recording device flashed on the screen behind him, then a voice boomed over the loudspeaker telling the audience to please turn on all cameras and recording devices. "I see a lot of red lights. That's good news," he said. The goal was to upload the footage from the concert/presentation on the HitRECord website, where it would then be turned into short films by a community of artists. Audience members were encouraged to Tweet at Gordon-Levitt (Twitter handle: @hitRECordJoe (http://twitter.com/hitRECordJoe)) with the answers to questions that flashed onscreen, like "What is independence?" He'd then bring the authors of the best Tweets onstage to discuss what they'd written and their grand philosophies of life. In between discussions, Gordon-Levitt screened short films created by the HitRECord community. The event was entertaining (if overlong), and Gordon-Levitt was admirably accessible, and here were some of the random highlights and observations of his event:

- Gordon-Levitt has one of the more accurate definitions of a hipster: "A hipster to me is someone who kind of dresses up like an artist, but they don't actually make anything. So all of y'all people who call me a hipster can go fuck yourselves because I make shit all the goddamn time. People are like, 'You wear skinny jeans.' These are 501s, man! Fucking straight."

- Special guest Parker Posey, who's here with Price Check (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1845849/) and once had three movies at Sundance in one year — House of Yes, Clockwatchers, and Suburbia  — seems to be really sick of the now-sixteen-year-old moniker "Indie queen." See if you can sense the sarcasm:

Posey: "This is very independent. I approve. I am the indie queen. Hey everybody! I got famous the old fashioned way. Don't hate me!"
JGL: "What do you mean by 'Indie Queen'?
Posey: "That's what they call me. That's what they called me. In Time  magazine. In 1996. And it stuck. And people can't seem to get over it."

- JGL considers himself a Jew "because of the food and the movies and stuff." This factoid emerged as he talked to an audience member who was excommunicated from the Jehovah's Witnesses.

- Posey went to Catholic school: "There's an expression: Once a Catholic by six, you're a Catholic forever. So I'm still carrying around my cross."

- There is no better way to lose a crowd of rowdy twenty-somethings than by a long reading of a script about Mark Twain with Parker Posey, Brady Corbet, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

- There is no better way to get them back than by being Joseph Gordon-Levitt and singing impassioned, *sometimes off-key acoustic renditions of "Baby Mine" and "Hey Jude."

In the film "50/50" starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, there's a moment at the 1:24 mark where JGL is getting out of his buddy Kyle's (Seth Rogen) car to go into the hospital for surgery to remove a tumor.  As he's exiting the passenger side of the car and leaning back in to talk to Kyle, he has a wooly striped cap on, and there's several seconds where I swear Heath came back to life.  Does anyone know how to find those few seconds on the Internet somehow and post it?  Heath fans will know exactly the seconds that I'm talking about.  If not, check it out and be sure to pay attention at the 1:24 mark.  I cried like a baby.

I've searched and googled every possibility I can think of in terms of movie photos and still frames, and can't come up with the still frame I wanted to show y'all.  Dangit!  Oh well, if any Heath fans haven't seen the movie yet, pay attention specifically at that 1 hour, 24 minute mark when he gets out of the car.  It's unbelievable.

Okay, here's what I did.  I rented the movie again from Redbox, and at the 1 hr 24 min mark, I went forward and back at 1/8th speed until I finally got the image where he's crinkling his forehead just the tiniest bit, and I took my laptop with the webcam that I've never used in the two years I've had it, and I held it in my hands in front of the TV, and snapped a photo of that paused split second.  Then I emailed it to myself, and saved the jpg file to My Pictures, and have attached it via the Reply Additional Options.  However, when I pull up the Preview, the image isn't there. WHAT AM I DOING WRONG?

Ohhh you must! Its an awesome funny comedy with a good message. Inspired by Shakespeares "The taming of the shrew". Heath play the main character and Joseph play the new guy in school. They don´t know each other from the beginning but during time there roads cross and they get to now each other more and more.

From Belfast Telegraph:

Gordon-Levitt wants Moore for debut

Thursday, 29 March 2012

Julianne Moore could have a role in Joseph Gordon-Levitt's directorial debut

Julianne Moore could be playing for laughs in Joseph Gordon-Levitt's untitled directorial debut.
The Oscar-nominated star is apparently in talks to take a role in the upcoming film, which Joseph wrote and will also star in, reported Variety.

The 51-year-old is expected to play an unlikely mentor to Joseph's character - a modern-day Don Juan who sets out on a quest to become a nicer person.

Scarlett Johansson is also on board to co-star.

Joseph, who has been directing short films for years, has cited his experiences with acclaimed filmmakers such as Christopher Nolan, Rian Johnson and Steven Spielberg as his inspiration.

Julianne - who portrayed former Alaskan governor Sarah Palin in TV movie Game Change - next stars in fantasy epic Seventh Son opposite Jeff Bridges. She's also a contender to play the unhinged religious fanatic mother in the Carrie remake with Chloe Moretz.

Gordon-Levitt for Shop Of Horrors?
Friday, 4 May 2012

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is involved in a remake of Little Shop Of Horrors

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is tipped to play Seymour in a new version of Little Shop Of Horrors.

The Inception star is involved in developing the remake and may also star as the florist who finds fame and success with a giant, human-eating plant, according to The Hollywood Reporter's Heat Vision blog.

So far it's not known who else is in the frame to appear in the reboot of the horror-comedy, which will be written by Glee writer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa.

Aguirre-Sacasa is also the screenwriter behind the upcoming Carrie remake.

The original 1960 Little Shop Of Horrors film has already been remade once, in the 80s, in a movie starring Rick Moranis. It has also been turned into a musical.

Joseph inspired by maverick Nolan

June 29, 2012

Joseph Gordon-Levitt revealed director Christopher Nolan has been a source of inspiration

Joseph Gordon-Levitt has been inspired watching director Christopher Nolan do exactly what he wants in terms of filmmaking.
The 31-year-old actor has worked with Nolan on Inception and new Batman movie The Dark Knight Rises, and is currently working on his own directorial debut.

Joseph told The Times: "To be honest, I always wanted to direct a movie; it's something I've been working towards for a long time. I love being an actor, but I also have stories I want to tell, and I'm not going to wait for somebody to hire me to do it."

He added: "[Former indie director Nolan] brings that same independence to these huge movies. Nobody at Warner Bros is telling Chris what to do.

"That's the indie thing... it's got an individual voice, of an artist who's got something to say."

Joseph's untitled film, starring himself as a modern-day Don Juan who sets out on a quest to become a nicer person, reportedly has Scarlett Johansson and Julianne Moore attached to co-star.

The short film director has also taken inspiration from working with Steven Spielberg on Team Of Rivals: The Political Genius Of Abraham Lincoln.

He said: "Things would happen that had not been planned for, and Steven would so quickly arrange the camera...

"He is able to capture that spontaneity and yet have it look like a Spielberg movie... It's something to see."

The short film director

 ???

I take it they mean he directs short films, except that the film described in the preceding paragraph does not sound like a short. But according to Google, he's 5'9", which while not especially tall doesn't really call for a description as "short," either.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt 'Disappointed' by GQ Article
July 17, 2012, 10:43 PM EST
Entertainment Tonight

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is thankful to have appeared on the cover of GQ's latest issue, but, according to The Dark Knight Rises star, the article could've been more tasteful.

The actor took to his Tumblr to address a quote in the piece concerning his older brother Dan (a.k.a. BURNING dAN), who died in October 2010.

The quote in question read as follows: "... the elder Gordon-Levitt died of an alleged drug overdose in 2010. 'It was an accident' is all Joe will say about that."

Gordon-Levitt offered a retort, writing, "Using the word 'alleged' technically allows the writer to say whatever she wants. The 'allegations' to which she must be referring were made by a handful of gossip websites. They are factually incorrect according to the coroner's office and the police department. I don't like publicly speaking about my brother's death, but I'm making an exception to correct this irresponsible claim."

The cause of death has not been made public, but the Golden Globe nominee seems to prefer it that way.

"... while I asked the writer not to dwell on how he died, I did say quite a bit about how he lived, and how much he means to me," Gordon-Levitt wrote. "Dan was a brightly positive, genuinely caring, and brilliantly inspiring person, and I liked the idea of such a wide readership learning about him. My parents and I are disappointed with what the article chose to focus on regarding this sensitive subject."

    It would seem that main stream media is going the way of the tabloids now.  I would have thought
better of GQ.  However it seems that the most reliable story and interviews can be found, (who would
have thought?) Rolling Stone.  They do excellent and insightful articles.  Plus they don't seem to try and
backstab their subjects.

     If this kind of behavior continues, there will no longer be, anyone willing to subject themselves to their
slanted scrutiny.  I know that Michelle Williams has particularly mentioned being blindsided by an interviewer.

     It appears that these writers, are looking more for tears than insights about  the celebrities.

They will continue to do it. They hate it already -- who wouldn't? But it promotes their movies and is written into their contracts.

That said, it is extremely bad journalism to say "allegedly blah blah blah" based on gossip sites, especially if the public records say otherwise.

GQ's pathetic response:
~~~
GQ to Joseph Gordon-Levitt: No Apology for Brother Death Claims
July 18, 2012, 7:12 PM ESTBy Tim Kenneally
TheWrap
GQ is standing its ground in its feud with "The Dark Knight Rises" actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
The magazine has responded to Gordon-Levitt's criticism of the magazine, regarding claims made about the death of his older brother, Dan, in a cover story on the actor in the magazine's August 2012 issue.
"The magazine stands by its reporting, the facts of which are fully supported—and have been confirmed in detail—by the Los Angeles County coroner's office," GQ said in a statement Wednesday.
Gordon-Levitt blasted the magazine via his Tumblr page earlier this week, over discovering a passage in the story discussing his deceased sibling.
"A photographer and fire spinner who went by the moniker Burning Dan, the elder Gordon-Levitt died of an alleged drug overdose in 2010," author Amy Wallace wrote. "'It was an accident' is all Joe will say about that."
Gordon-Levitt blasted back at the magazine, saying it was "irresponsible." The actor claimed that the magazine was repeating speculation and hiding behind weasel words.
"Using the word 'alleged' technically allows the writer to say whatever she wants," Gordon-Levitt wrote. "The 'allegations' to which she must be referring were made by a handful of gossip websites. They are factually incorrect according to the coroner's office and the police department. I don't like publicly speaking about my brother's death, but I'm making an exception to correct this irresponsible claim."
In its response to the actor's criticism, the magazine also claimed that it had attempted to be "respectful" in its mention of Daniel Gordon-Levitt's death.
"Because the writer, Amy Wallace, and her editors understood the pain Dan's passing caused the Gordon-Levitt family, the story sought to be respectful—and brief—in the way it described his death, which GQ felt was a relevant fact in Joseph Gordon-Levitt's biography," the magazine said.
..Actor Gordon-Levitt changes masks for "Dark Knight Rises"
By Piya Sinha-Roy | Reuters – Wed, Jul 18, 2012....
....LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Joseph Gordon-Levitt has come a long way from his television days playing a disguised extraterrestrial stranded on Earth, harnessing a chameleon-like ability to inhabit a variety of roles in independent films and big-budget blockbusters.
The actor, who gained fame on TV show "3rd Rock From the Sun," portrays Gotham police officer John Blake in Friday's "The Dark Knight Rises," the eagerly anticipated final installment of director Christopher Nolan's "Batman" trilogy.
While details about the film plot have been kept closely guarded, the actor told Reuters in a recent interview that fans can expect "a really excellent movie and a real ending" for the trio of Nolan's movies about the crime-fighting superhero.
"Sometimes they call something a trilogy, and it's not really a trilogy, it's another sequel to make money. But this really is a great ending, there's a beginning, a middle and an end," Gordon-Levitt said about Nolan's Batman movies.
Gordon-Levitt plays idealistic rookie cop Blake who becomes Commissioner Gordon's protégé. As trouble is unleashed on Gotham by the villain Bane, Blake becomes a key figure in joining Batman to save the city.
Following "Dark Knight," fans see Gordon-Levitt in several films over the next few months, including adrenaline-laced thriller "Premium Rush" in August and opposite Bruce Willis in sci-fi time travel thriller "Looper" in September, which reunited him with "Brick" director Rian Johnson.
"(Rian) wrote the part for me, and I've never had somebody write a part for me. That was an honor," Gordon-Levitt said.
In "Looper," both Gordon-Levitt and Willis play the same mob hitman called Joe, hired to kill targets through time travel. Gordon-Levitt took to the challenge of becoming Willis both physically and mentally, watching the "Die Hard" star's old movies, listening to his voice and spending time with him.
"My favorite part of acting is becoming something other than myself, and most of my favorite actors are the chameleons, the ones who disappear into their roles. You don't see the actor on screen, you see the character," Gordon-Levitt said, citing Gary Oldman, Meryl Streep and Daniel Day-Lewis as influences.
Director Johnson told Reuters that Gordon-Levitt put in a lot of "legwork and heavy lifting" to research and embody his characters thoroughly so that audiences don't feel like he is simply putting up an imitation.
FROM "3RD ROCK" TO BLOCKBUSTERS
Gordon-Levitt, 31, a native of Los Angeles, has spent most of his life in front of a camera, appearing on television regularly since the early 1990s and landing a lead role on NBC's alien comedy "3rd Rock" alongside John Lithgow.
The actor's transition to movies began with a breakout role in 1999 teen comedy "10 Things I Hate About You." Since then, he has worked non-stop across a variety of film genres, from 2004's gritty, low-budget drama "Brick" to playing a hopeless romantic in 2009 romantic comedy "(500) Days Of Summer." He broke into blockbusters with Stephen Sommers' "G.I. Joe: The Rise Of The Cobra" in 2009, and in Nolan's "Inception" in 2010.
"The reason he's been successful at it is that he applies the same criteria to big movies as he does to small movies, he's not just looking to break in and hop on board the latest big franchise, he chooses stories and filmmakers he's interested in," said Johnson, who is close friends with the actor.
Gordon-Levitt's range is wide. He portrayed a cancer sufferer in last year's comedy "50/50" and will be a bike messenger in the upcoming "Premium Rush," as well as Abraham Lincoln's son opposite Daniel Day-Lewis in Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln."
"I have an eclectic taste in the movies that I watch as well as the movies I'm inspired to want to work on. Variety is what keeps things interesting," the actor said. "I do work a whole lot and that's what I love to do, I'm very lucky to have a job that I love and that's pretty much what I do with my time."
Gordon-Levitt makes his directorial debut in "Don Jon's Addiction," exploring porn addiction, due in theaters next year starring Scarlett Johansson and Julianne Moore.
He also is heavily involved with his production company hitRECord, an online community of creative individuals who work on projects, including "The Tiny Book Of Tiny Stories," with volume 2 due out in November.
"There's plenty of people who don't have access to participate in the traditional entertainment industry and are great artists all the same, so hitRECord is a way for me to work with those people," said the actor.
Gordon-Levitt's superhero dreams
Thursday, 26 July 2012
Joseph Gordon-Levitt has hinted that he would like to play a superhero.
But the 31-year-old, who plays policeman John Blake in The Dark Knight Rises, refused to answer the question directly, teasing: "Everybody should play a superhero, whether the cameras are rolling or not."
Joseph, who got the role in Christopher Nolan's third and final Batman film after working with the filmmaker on Inception, is proud that he got the opportunity to reunite with him again.
"It's an honour, a deep honour. I've loved Batman ever since I was a little kid, and I've particularly loved Mr Nolan's movies," he divulged.
"I remember when Batman Begins came out and I said to myself, 'Oh, the filmmaker who is making Memento is making a Batman film. That's really interesting - I'm going to see that'. I loved it, and then The Dark Knight was just about the coolest thing I've ever seen in a movie theatre, so to be a part of this third one, I feel really grateful and very lucky."
The actor, whose new film Looper will open the Toronto International Film Festival on September 6, revealed Batman fans will be pleased with the ending in The Dark Knight Rises, which is in cinemas now.
"It's a very good ending. Sometimes they make a second sequel and they call it a trilogy, but it's just another sequel to make more money," he explained.
"This is a very satisfying ending. There was a beginning, a middle and now this is the conclusion."
Joseph G-L not expecting Robin film
Thursday, 16 August 2012
Joseph Gordon-Levitt starred in the Dark Knight Rises
Joseph Gordon-Levitt has commented on the potential for him to star in a Batman spin-off movie.
 In the final scenes of Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises his orphaned cop character is seen discovering the Batcave after it is revealed his real name is Robin.
But Joseph told Jimmy Kimmel Live: "I don't get to decide those things. That's the honest truth, man. You think I get to make those decisions? I don't think it's necessarily a set-up [for a sequel].
"I think it's a great ending for that trilogy. Even if you go back to Batman Begins, he's talking about how Batman is more than a man. It's a symbol. A hero can be anybody, and we all have heroes inside of us. That's a theme that runs throughout the trilogy," MTV.com reported the actor as saying.
Christopher Nolan has made it clear The Dark Knight Rises is his final film in his trilogy.
Asked about being given the role of Robin in the film, Joseph said: "It's pretty awesome, right?
"I was a fan of those movies before I ever met [Christopher Nolan] or did Inception or ever thought I was going to get to do The Dark Knight Rises. He's such a great storyteller and filmmaker. It was such an honour."
20Q:
JOSEPH GORDON-LEVITT
by STEPHEN REBELLO
published Aug 15, 2012
(http://pictures.playboy.com/assets/articles/9709d273-a190-4efb-b61b-dd622ecdc2cf/playgroundHero.jpg)
Q1
PLAYBOY: We’re about to see you play a bike messenger chased by a twisted cop in the big-screen action thriller Premium Rush.  Meanwhile, audiences are still arguing about whether The Dark Knight Rises  is the best-ever Batman  flick, and your profile has kept rising since you did Inception  and (500) Days of Summer.  Having acted in commercials and TV shows such as 3rd Rock From the Sun  since you were six and having made your 1992 movie debut at the age of 11 as Student #1 in Beethoven,  do you look back on your childhood as a bit skewed?
GORDON-LEVITT: I wouldn’t say I was a normal kid. I’d say I was a lucky little kid, because unfortunately it’s not normal to have extraordinarily good parents who love and support you. I played baseball, did gymnastics, took piano lessons and started acting as just another one of the things I did. I wasn’t pressured into it. But it was acting I loved. I had a really cool acting teacher who taught us how to become a character, to be realistic and feel those feelings, so I hated being expected to behave like an idiot in TV commercials because they seem to think that’s what sells toys or whatever. I remember on Beethoven  we weren’t allowed to pet the dog because it would have distracted him. For a dog lover that was disappointing and weird.
Q2
PLAYBOY: Back then, just as now, you never seemed to get caught up in any of the missteps that have turned many promising young actors into tabloid fodder. How?
GORDON-LEVITT: Being on TV when I was a teenager in high school was way harder than anything I’ve experienced since. It prepared me for what it is to work in pop culture. I’ve learned I have basically two different interactions with people. I love when someone approaches me and tells me they’ve seen me in something that made them feel something and that they connected to it. That’s part of why I do it. The other interaction is with people who really don’t care about the movies or anything like that. They just sort of buy into the fame thing, and that feels icky to me.
Q3
PLAYBOY: Have you followed the political traditions of your grandfather Michael Gordon, a director who survived the 1950s blacklists; your father, who was news director of a politically progressive radio station; and your mother, who in 1970 ran for Congress on the Peace and Freedom Party ticket?
GORDON-LEVITT: My parents are political in that they’re well read and as up on the news as anybody I know. To me that is political activism, choosing to stay informed and not just watching CNN or some bullshit entertainment show. Every time I sit down and watch television news, I think, This is show business. That’s what I do. I say, go on the internet and find news from all over the world through the BBC, the Pacifica stations, newspapers, people’s blogs and tweets. It’s so funny when people say Fox is bad. Sure Fox is bad, but I don’t think CNN and MSNBC are really any better.
Q4
PLAYBOY: You’ve shot a number of short films, including one last year documenting Occupy Wall Street protesters in Zuccotti Park in New York. How closely does the mainstream media’s coverage of that movement relate to what you filmed and experienced?
GORDON-LEVITT: Very little. What I’ve seen on TV focuses on the superficial stuff. It’s a pretty simple notion: People who have lots of money—people in corporations who have tons of money—are malevolently manipulating the system to keep their money. And the rest of the world suffers for it. You could show a trillion examples of how Goldman Sachs, McDonald’s, Walmart and Monsanto are clearly fucking over everybody, but CNN, Fox and MSNBC are owned by Fortune 500 companies, so they never show any of it.
Q5
PLAYBOY: Couldn’t a detractor accuse you, a famous, privileged actor, of being one of the elites?
GORDON-LEVITT: I grew up in the 1990s, when it was considered cool to be excessively rich. That’s what rappers rapped about, and later that’s what Paris Hilton had a TV show about and what MTV Cribs was about. The Occupy movement is a pop culture happening that’s saying money is not what’s cool. What’s cool is doing something worthwhile. If your goal is to make money in the movie industry, you make crappy movies, not good ones.
Q6
PLAYBOY: How did you make the rough transition from kid TV star to grown-up movie star?
GORDON-LEVITT: As a teenager in the 1990s I loved the spike of indie films coming through Sundance, and films like Pulp Fiction, Big Night, Sling Blade, Trees Lounge  and Swingers.  Had I said to my agents at the time that I wanted to do that stuff, they would have said, “You’re making a ton of money doing TV, and that’s what you’re going to do.” I went to school, quit acting for a while, and when I came back everyone wanted me to do another TV show and make more money. I didn’t want to. I made a decision that I was going to do only work that inspired me creatively, not what was supposed to be good for my career.
Q7
PLAYBOY: Yet the work that inspires can also be commercial. The sweet, upbeat indie romance (500) Days of Summer  was a hit and turned you into a heartthrob.
GORDON-LEVITT: The (500) Days of Summer  attitude of “He wants you so bad” seems attractive to some women and men, especially younger ones, but I would encourage anyone who has a crush on my character to watch it again and examine how selfish he is. He develops a mildly delusional obsession over a girl onto whom he projects all these fantasies. He thinks she’ll give his life meaning because he doesn’t care about much else going on in his life. A lot of boys and girls think their lives will have meaning if they find a partner who wants nothing else in life but them. That’s not healthy. That’s falling in love with the idea of a person, not the actual person.
Q8
PLAYBOY: Are you actually slagging a movie that landed you on people’s radar and made many of them fall in love with you and Zooey Deschanel as a screen couple?
GORDON-LEVITT: No, I really liked that movie. The coming-of-age story is subtly done, and that’s great, because nothing’s worse than an over-the-top, cheesy, hitting-you-over-the-head-with-a-hammer, moral-of-the-story sort of thing. But a part of the movie that’s less talked about is that once Zooey’s character dumps the guy, he builds himself up without the crutch of a fantasy relationship, and he meets a new girl.
Q9
PLAYBOY: Your character in (500) Days  made extravagant gestures in the name of love. What kind of woman could make you do that?
GORDON-LEVITT: Making checklists of things you’re looking for in a person is the numero uno thing you can do to guarantee you’ll be alone forever. You can’t meet someone and think, Do they have everything I want in a person? You just have to pay attention, keep your eyes open, listen to people and be present. I guess what I look for in a girl is someone who’s doing that too. Beyond that there’s not much more I would specify, because you never fucking know, man.
Q10
PLAYBOY: You and Deschanel also made the music video “Why Do You Let Me Stay Here?” and a homemade one of you two singing the 1947 classic “What Are You Doing New Year’s Eve?” How do you react when so many people—judging from comments on the internet—want the two of you to get together romantically?
GORDON-LEVITT: It’s awkward when people say that. Whatever. Zooey and I just think it’s funny. It is funny. We’ve been friends for 10 years. She loves movies, music and art, and she’s incredibly knowledgeable about that stuff. She’s turned me on to so many good movies and so much good music. It’s fun just to have conversations, watch movies with her and stuff like that.
Q11
PLAYBOY: You’ve used YouTube and the internet a lot to express yourself. Is it as satisfying and creative an outlet as film?
GORDON-LEVITT: The internet’s a fascinating thing because you can express yourself anonymously without any of the consequences. I’ve developed a lot of meaningful, creatively collaborative relationships with all sorts of people on the internet. I use Twitter a lot, and I have an open collaborative production company, hitRECord, where I make art with people.
Q12
PLAYBOY: Are there any film genres you haven’t done that you’d like to tackle? You’re reportedly attached to a remake of Little Shop of Horrors.
GORDON-LEVITT: I would like to do a musical, if I could find a cool one. When Zooey and I danced in that video it was just us having a great time, just being ourselves. A song-and-dance role is closer to me personally than other characters I play.
Q13
PLAYBOY: Your grandfather Michael Gordon directed some of the most popular romantic comedies and tearjerkers of the 1960s, with Doris Day, Rock Hudson and James Garner. Do you ever wish you were working in old-time Hollywood?
GORDON-LEVITT: No. Right now is without a doubt the most exciting time in human history. The ability to connect with one another, the technology of the internet and all that it’s spawning, is doubtlessly the most fascinating thing that’s ever happened. It’s an incredibly exciting time to be alive, as a human being and especially as an artist. In the 20th century making movies, music or anything was a one-way thing, but creativity is always more of an interactive, back-and-forth, organic and progressive thing. We’re going to get away from “Oh, I just get to listen to stories; I don’t tell them” and “I just listen to music; I don’t play or sing it.” No, man! That’s a terrible way to think about yourself. I think art is going to become more conversational, more of a dialogue, and a better, healthier thing for everybody.
Q14
PLAYBOY: Why do you think your Dark Knight Rises  co-star Christian Bale called you an “intriguing guy”?
GORDON-LEVITT: We had a fucking great time every day working on that movie. I felt as though I’d transferred in for senior year and had a graduation celebration. You felt a huge sense of accomplishment and closure. Everyone on that movie did such good, dignified work. No one came to phone it in or just cash a check.
Q15
PLAYBOY: Are you enough of a daredevil to tear through Manhattan traffic on a fixed-gear brakeless bicycle the way your terrorized bike messenger character does in Premium Rush ?
GORDON-LEVITT: I’m really into bikes, actually, because I was paying attention to them doing Premium Rush.  So when someone rides by with a cool setup that really fits them, I think, Oh wow, that looks nice. I live in a part of L.A. with quite a bike culture, and I bought a great bike, but I don’t ride it as much as I’d like.
Q16
PLAYBOY: Does being an internet-savvy guy who has acted in a few high-tech, futuristic movies translate into being a cutting-edge, gadget-buying guy offscreen?
GORDON-LEVITT: I’d say no. I will admit I like cameras. I have some that are really nice. I like a beautiful guitar or piano, because I love music and musical instruments. I guess I do as much fetishizing as the average guy. Cars do not impress me. Whenever I see somebody with an extremely nice car, I’m like, What an idiot. It just looks so stupid.
Q17
PLAYBOY: You play Abraham Lincoln’s son in Steven Spielberg’s upcoming historical epic Lincoln,  starring Daniel Day-Lewis.
GORDON-LEVITT: It’s a ridiculously exciting movie to be part of. Daniel Day-Lewis has a unique, enormously inspiring process that’s very immersive. I never heard his real voice or saw him out of costume. I met the president, I met my dad, but I never met Day-Lewis until we wrapped. As excited as I am about Lincoln,  though, I’m honestly most excited about Looper.
Q18
PLAYBOY: That’s the time-travel movie in which you’re an assassin assigned to kill your future self, played by Bruce Willis. What personal or professional transgressions would you travel through time to fix?
GORDON-LEVITT: I wouldn’t do that, but I’m a sucker for Rian Johnson’s thing. He’s the writer-director of Looper,  and I also made Brick  with him. He’s a dear friend and a brilliant filmmaker—a great writer, a great mind. Looper  brings all the exhilaration and chemical feelings you hope to get from an action sci-fi movie. But Rian has also come up with a concept that will tickle your intellect while he tells a sincere story about the cyclical nature of violence and how violence begets violence. I love going to a good movie more than anything, and this movie just hits it.
Q19
PLAYBOY: What’s the best night out you’ve had recently?
GORDON-LEVITT: Questlove is a great drummer, but I saw him deejay recently. He could put on any record at all, but the art is in the sequence, reading the crowd and thinking, I know exactly the song to put on right now. To me that’s the art form of the 21st century and creativity in general—being able to pick and choose from anything and make the right choice.
Q20
PLAYBOY: You replaced James Franco in Inception  and James McAvoy in 50/50.  Which other famous Jameses are you out to replace?
GORDON-LEVITT: [Laughs] That’s funny. LeBron better look out.
Q10
PLAYBOY: You and Deschanel also made the music video “Why Do You Let Me Stay Here?” and a homemade one of you two singing the 1947 classic “What Are You Doing New Year’s Eve?” How do you react when so many people—judging from comments on the internet—want the two of you to get together romantically?
GORDON-LEVITT: It’s awkward when people say that. Whatever. Zooey and I just think it’s funny. It is funny. We’ve been friends for 10 years. She loves movies, music and art, and she’s incredibly knowledgeable about that stuff. She’s turned me on to so many good movies and so much good music. It’s fun just to have conversations, watch movies with her and stuff like that.
Q11
PLAYBOY: You’ve used YouTube and the internet a lot to express yourself. Is it as satisfying and creative an outlet as film?
             He was awesome as always.  The skits were bitingly funny.  He was sexy and grown up completely.  He is now that hot sexy leading man.
Who would have thought it.  After his start in Third Rock from the Sun teen goof ball style.  He is for sure a multi=talented man.  Music, acting, writing
and a great take on being in his own body.
OK, Saw that on the TV in the bar Saturday night, but I wasn't close enough to the screen to make out who it was in front. Now I know.
Looks like he started early with a personal trainer.
Gordon-Levitt 'super proud' of film
Thursday, 27 September 2012
Joseph Gordon-Levitt makes his directorial debut with Don Jon's Addiction
Joseph Gordon-Levitt has revealed that he is really chuffed with his directorial debut, Don Jon's Addiction.
The Dark Knight Rises star has also written the script for the black comedy, in which he plays the lead role of a "modern-day Don Juan".
"It's a dark comedy, I guess you could call it, and I'm super proud of it. We're editing it right now," he told Collider, without giving further details about when it would premiere.
Scarlett Johansson, Julianne Moore and Brie Larson also star in the film, which is expected to be released in 2013.
"I wrote the part for Scarlett Johansson and she liked the script enough to do it. She's fantastic in it. Julianne Moore is in it, she's also really fantastic in it," he added.
Joseph, who stars in sci-fi thriller Looper alongside Bruce Willis and Emily Blunt, said he has been inspired by the filmmakers he has collaborated with such as Rian Johnson, Christopher Nolan and Steven Spielberg.
"The good directors I've worked with have that balance between really having done their homework but also being flexible enough to change on the day," he explained.
"Rian is a director who comes at it with a well-thought through vision but at the same time, he's really open to spontaneity and collaboration. In that way, he's quite similar to Chris Nolan and Steven Spielberg, I found."
Interview
Joseph Gordon-Levitt
reveling in Looper,  hitRECord,
and his directing debut, but not fame
Joseph Gordon-Levitt started acting on television and in ads at age 6, but he’s been one of the few child actors to successfully make the leap to a serious, wide-ranging adult career. He moved from small roles on shows like Family Ties, Murder, She Wrote,  and Quantum Leap  to a career-making stint as Tommy on 3rd Rock From The Sun,  then became a respected young film star with a lead role in Gregg Araki’s 2004 film Mysterious Skin.  He followed it up in 2005 with the lead in Brick,  the writing and directing debut of filmmaker Rian Johnson; the stylish neo-noir murder mystery, incongruously set in a high school, brought both of them a steadily growing cult fandom.
Gordon-Levitt went on to many high-profile roles, starring in (500) Days Of Summer, 50/50, Hesher,  and Premium Rush,  and becoming a major part of Inception  and Christopher Nolan’s 2012 trilogy-capper The Dark Knight Rises.  He plays Abraham Lincoln’s son Robert Todd in Steven Spielberg’s upcoming Lincoln.  And currently, he stars in Rian Johnson’s third film, Looper,  as a low-ranked assassin trying to track down and murder his time-traveling 30-years-older self, played by Bruce Willis. For the role, Gordon-Levitt wore prosthetics to make him look more like Willis, and spent weeks studying Willis’ movements and voice in order to play him more credibly. The A.V. Club recently sat down with Gordon-Levitt in Chicago to discuss that process, plus his online artistic-collaboration collective hitRECord, and his writing-directing feature debut, due out next year.
The A.V. Club: Rian Johnson wrote the protagonist of Looper  with you in mind to play it. Did that give you more input into the character? Were you part of the process as it was being created?
Joseph Gordon-Levitt: Yeah, Rian really included me in the process much more than I’ve ever been included as an actor. I mean, normally you get a script several months before you start shooting, and this was something where I’d been involved in the project for several years. And even before that, Rian had been talking to me, having conversations. Before I even saw a draft of the script, Rian started telling me about this time-travel idea he had, not long after we finished shooting Brick.  So it’s something we’d been talking about. With that said, it was really all him. He would bounce stuff off me and we would have conversations, but I think I would serve as, more than anything, just a sounding board. I don’t think there was even one single example where I was like, “No, not this. I think you’re wrong.” There wasn’t any of that. This is his movie, and I was delighted to kind of be a collaborator.
AVC: Was there anything specific that you wanted to see in the character?
JGL: I can’t think of anything like that. No. I think it was there already.
AVC: You were with Rian from the beginning of his feature-film career, on Brick.  How did that experience compare with this one, now that he’s had more time to mature as a director?
JGL: Well, I think there’s more confidence in the experience that he’s had doing a couple more movies, but I actually was more struck by the similarities than the differences. Really, it felt like making a movie with my dear friend. The scope of this one is obviously much grander than Brick,  but the sentiment was very much the same—still just making a movie we thought was cool. It wasn’t about, “Well, it’s going to be bigger, so we better make sure it appeals to a broad audience,” or anything like that.
AVC: How’s his style with actors compared to Christopher Nolan’s?
JGL: Well, they’re really different filmmakers and really different people, but one thing I would say they have in common is, they strike a really good balance between… They both approach any given day with a really well-thought-through vision of what they want the scene to be. They’ve really done their homework. But they’re both very welcoming and encouraging of collaboration and spontaneity, and they’re flexible. You could also say this of Steven Spielberg, who I worked with on Lincoln.
And I think that balance is key to any filmmaker’s success, because making a movie, there’s so many variables, and it’s such a logistical beast that you’re never going to get reality to line up with exactly your abstract ideal, preconceived notion of things. Sometimes for dumb reasons, like “Ooop, sorry, we had to put our trucks over there, so you can’t shoot that way.” Sometimes for really good reasons, like, “Oh shit, I just didn’t think of that. It really doesn’t feel so natural to say it this way or to move right then,” and so you need a director to be able to adapt and be flexible. Rian and Chris and Steven are really good at that.
AVC: You have a reputation as being a very serious actor. Are you comfortable with that image?
JGL: Sure. I would hope to use “sincere” over “serious,” ’cause I like doing fun stuff and funny stuff, too. Premium Rush  came out this year. There’s nothing serious about it. It’s just pure, unadulterated fun and hilarity. But I approached it sincerely, and I care about it. I love movies, deeply. And it’s not just a job to me. It’s what I love to do, so I guess maybe that’s where that comes from.
AVC: Do you think having that kind of rep makes directors more willing to work collaboratively with you and take your input?
JGL: I don’t think it’s the reputation. I think, though, that if you do the work, then maybe you’ll have something to contribute.
AVC: When we talked to you about Brick,  you said Johnson did a lot of rehearsal and very few takes, because the budget was so small and you were working on film. Did Looper  having a bigger budget affect that preference or your working methods?
JGL: It was still very tight, because the scale of the movie is also so much bigger. In fact, the movie looks a lot more expensive than it was. For the amount of money we had, it’s crazy how big the movie is, and that’s a credit to Rian and a credit to Ram Bergman, Rian’s producer, who produced Brick  and Brothers Bloom  and Looper.  And also produced the movie I just directed, or am directing. That’s his specialty, taking a little bit of money and making it go a long way. So we had more time, but we had more to do. We were pretty equally tight and focused. I don’t think it’s really Rian’s style to be loose, which isn’t necessarily good or bad. That’s just his style. Like on 50/50,  that was their style. Seth [Rogen] and Evan [Goldberg] and Jon Levine, the director, and Will Reiser, the writer. That whole creative process of that posse of guys is loose, and that works for them really well. It feels really natural and real and that’s because oftentimes it is. People are improvising, and that’s fun, too. I really enjoyed that.
AVC: Though some of it presumably was tightly planned. When you’re shaving all your hair off, you can’t go back and do it three or four more times.
JGL: You can’t, that’s true. But they rolled two cameras and we did the lines. And then we just started improvising, because it takes you five minutes to shave your head, and there wasn’t five minutes of dialogue written. So we kept going and just said a bunch of stuff, and a lot of what’s in that scene was stuff we made up on the spot. But there’s nothing like that in Looper.  And again, I don’t think one’s better than the other. They’re just different approaches.
AVC: You’ve been on record in the past as not really enjoying fame and the attention that comes with it. How do you deal with that in a year where you’re in this many high-priced, high-profile projects?
JGL: Well, I’ll start by making a distinction. I love movies, and when people also love movies, I love that. Anytime anybody comes up to me and has clearly had any connection to a movie that I did—they say “Hey, I saw Inception  and now I’ve been thinking about my dreams more,” or “Hey, I saw 50/50  and it made me cry,” or “I saw (500) Days Of Summer  and it made me laugh or it made me think about my ex,” or whatever—any of that, I love that. That’s really meaningful to me. What I don’t like is when people have no real interest in the movies and just want to be close to the spotlight or something like that, or take a picture of me so they can put it on Facebook and say, “Hey, I’m next to a celebrity.” That to me is kind of objectifying, and I feel used. So is that happening more this year? I guess, yeah, because all these movies came out at once. But I think when you do anything professionally, you take the good with the bad. There are parts of the job that are less fun than other parts, and the parts that I love are worth it.
AVC: You’ve talked in the past about preparing for shooting days by listening to character-appropriate music because it helps you shut out the chaos on the set. Did you do that here?
JGL: My preparation revolved less around music this time, and more around Bruce Willis’ voice. But there was some, yeah. I listened to a lot of Billie Holiday for this role. Also a song that’s in the movie, it’s called “Powerful Love,” this old soul record, and it’s on this great compilation called Eccentric Soul  [Twinight’s Lunar Rotation] that Rian turned me onto at the time. It’s all these old dirty soul records that never made it on the radio. And a bunch of those songs were good. I was listening to those. So yeah, because I think the character of Joe, and loopers in general, they’re all into these 20th-century affectations, as Jeff Daniels’ [character] Abe puts it. And Billie Holiday in particular, she has a really sad voice. You feel a weight on her shoulders, and I wanted that for this character. He’s a sad guy. He’s not living a life he wants to live. He’s not a hero by any means.
AVC: In the process of listening to Willis’ voice and watching how he moves and trying to imitate that, did you reach a point where you unconsciously internalized him? Was it something you had to think about, or did it become second nature?
JGL: That’s what I went for. That’s what I wanted. I didn’t want to be focusing on the technical details of getting his voice or manners right by the time we were shooting, because then I’m faking it. So that’s about doing the homework in advance, such that once you show up to set, that stuff has all become practiced enough so that it’s like riding a bike: You don’t have to think about why you’re doing it, so I could just be concentrating on what the character’s feeling. Because really, it’s a drama. It’s a movie about feelings, about how these characters think and feel and are. Much like The Dark Knight Rises.  It’s a superhero movie, a sci-fi time-travel movie, but it’s really a profound drama, a character-piece morality tale.
AVC: The heart of the movie is a conflict between a man at two different ages, with completely different, incompatible agendas. Did you largely take your own character’s side in that conflict?
JGL: Well, when the cameras are rolling, you certainly take the side of your character. Yeah, you can’t be removed like that. That’s the director’s job. You’ve got to trust your director to put you in the right context of the whole story, and really just see it from your character’s point of view. But that’s interesting that you say they have two totally different approaches. What would you say are the two different…?
AVC: They’re both protecting their lives, but those lives are different, and they fundamentally rest on valuing different things. And they’re both too selfish to see any value in each other’s lives.
JGL: Right. That’s the commonality.
AVC: Were there points where you thought your version of the character took his agenda too far?
JGL: Well, they both do horrible things. But they both feel like they’re doing the right thing, and that, I think, is the crux of the movie. No one committing an atrocity thinks they’re committing an atrocity. They think they’re fighting for the noble cause. So how do you get out of that cycle? Because that just leads to more and more finger-pointing and more and more violence begetting violence begetting violence. It’s a circle.
AVC: Do you get the same satisfaction as an actor out of something as dialogue-driven or concept-driven as Rian Johnson’s movies, and something like Premium Rush  that’s more energy and adrenaline?
JGL: I love the variety, both as a movie-watcher and as an actor. Sometimes I just want to watch a fun chase movie. And Premium Rush  is really good for that. And then sometimes I want something that’ll—I think Looper  is really great at offering both. It’s kind of like Inception,  where it is just a really fun adrenaline rush if that’s what you want. But it also can offer you a lot to chew on and think about if you’re interested in looking under the hood.
AVC: What’s your involvement in hitRECord these days?
JGL: Since I’ve been shooting Don Jon’s Addiction,  I’m less involved than I’ve been at other times, but I’m still quite involved. But I also—we’ve been growing a lot, so there’s more and more people both on our staff and in the community that help, that are doing a lot of that stuff. Whereas in the past, it was kind of me going through all these records and finding the good stuff, or the stuff I wanted to cultivate and work on. Now we have armies of people doing that. And I think that’s good, and that’s sort of the whole premise of hitRECord, is, “Why would I just leave it to myself when we can do this together?”
We have these resident curators on the site now. They’re all just members of the community, just people who joined the site like anybody else, but have proven over time to do good work and have good taste and recommend good things. We kind of tap them and give them duties, and they’re stoked to perform them, because whereas we used to get some records every day, now we get 2,500 new records every day. Even our resident curators can’t go through all that. That takes the community, more than 100,000 people on there, to go through everything and do the curation necessary to find stuff that we want to work with as a production company. But hitRECord’s going gangbusters. I’m so pleased with it.
Speaking of Looper,  we actually are just forming a partnership right now with Sony. Sony’s putting out Looper  and Sony’s supporting hitRECord for the rest of the year. So we split our profits: Half go back into the company, and half go to all the different contributing artists. So we’re going to be able to pay our contributing artists way more than we’ve ever paid them before, thanks to Sony. And in fact, Levi’s is coming on board too, to do a similar partnership.
AVC: What’s their end of the deal? Is it for exposure, or do they get ads out of it or something else?
JGL: Levi’s has supported lots of great artists in the past. They’ve supported Shepard Fairey. They’ve supported James Murphy. They did this thing called Art In The Streets  at MOCA last year. They’ve been doing this for years now, and it’s just part of their—they’re a brand that believes—I’ve asked them about it. I’m like, “How do you guys know this is worth it for you?” And they’re like, “It’s really hard to prove scientifically, but we feel like it’s good for us to support things in the culture that we think are positive.” I think that’s great of them, and I’m proud to be on their list of great artists. They’ve done partnership stuff with Snoop before. They partner with all sorts of good people. And I was very clear with them: “We’re not making commercials. We’re just going to basically do what we would do anyway.” And they’re like “Yeah, that’s what we want. We want you to just do what you do, and we’re going to support you.” And I was like, “Okay, great!” They have their name on some particular short films of ours that we’re working on now that they particularly like, that they think represent them, and that kind of thing. And now I’m here talking to you about it. That’s also part of what’s in it for them. But I think it’s awesome.
AVC: What’s the likelihood of another Morgan and Destiny short (http://www.hitrecord.org/records/65444) at some point?
JGL: I don’t know. There’s so much good new stuff. I wouldn’t count it out. You never know. But I’m flattered that you know what that is. Thank you.
We’re putting out a new record right now called Move On The Sun.  It’s really good music. It’s definitely the best music we’ve ever made. It’s astonishing to me. And I wrote one of the songs and sing on one of the songs, but the rest is all just great musicians under our direction, collaborating together and making all sorts of stuff. There are great hip-hop songs, great electronic pop songs, there’s great funk. So much good stuff. It’s really moving to me to see it blossom like this.
AVC: You’ve mentioned working on Don Jon’s Addiction  a couple of times now. Where is it in the process?
JGL: We’re editing it now.
AVC: What’s the release plan?
JGL: Well, it’s a real independent movie. We made it for very little money without any distributor behind it. I was pretty keen. I teamed up with Ram, the same guy who produced Brick  and Looper.  And was clear that I would take a lower budget in order to maintain complete control. The strategy is to finish the movie and make it exactly what I want it to be before we introduce it to the world. Yeah, we’re still finishing the movie. We finished shooting about two months ago, and we’ll see. I can’t wait for you guys to see it. I’m really, really proud of it. Scarlett [Johansson] is fantastic in it. She’s playing a character that’s really different than anyone she’s played before, and she’s really funny and great. Heartfelt performance. And Julianne [Moore] is, I think, one of the great actors alive. Talk about a chameleon. She’s really great at that.
AVC: Did you have either of them—or any other actors, really—in mind when you were scripting?
JGL: I had Scarlett in mind when I was writing it. I hadn’t figured out the other characters, but I did have Scarlett in mind, and it was nerve-wracking. I was like, “What if she doesn’t like it? God, I don’t know what I’m going to do.” But luckily, she did like it and agreed to do it.
AVC: Given that you wrote and directed and starred in the film, can people look at this and say it’s your ideal role?
JGL: Well, I wouldn’t say the ideal role. It’s definitely a role I was really intrigued and inspired by. It’s really different from anything I’ve done before. There are lots of ideal roles. I’d love to be in a musical. This is not that. And the character is really nothing like me. And I guess in that way, it’s ideal, because I like playing characters that are really different from me, whether it’s like in Looper  or Hesher  or Don Jon’s Addiction.  That’s usually what I get the biggest kick out of.
AVC: What was it like directing yourself?
JGL: Well, speaking of hitRECord, I do think that that was a big part of why I felt capable of doing it, because I spent all these years making little things, getting used to looking at myself. ’Cause when actors say they have trouble watching themselves, they’re not just being humble. It’s a weird thing, I’m sure, if you’re ever seen—you’ve probably seen yourself on camera. It’s odd to see your own face and hear your own voice, but it is something you can practice. And you can get used to it over time like anything, so I think the time I’ve spent doing these hitRECord videos like “Morgan And Destiny (http://www.hitrecord.org/records/65444)” or any number of other ones got me used to seeing myself on a screen, and therefore allowed me to be objective and watch playback—if we did a take I thought was good, I felt like I could watch playback and not just be like, “Oh God, I look weird,” but be productive and say, “Okay, I need to change this, but that’s good,” etcetera.
AVC: How does wearing Bruce Willis’ face throughout a film change that process?
JGL: Oh, it only helps. I mean, it’s not the most comfortable thing in the world, but other than that, it’s—wearing the face was key, key inspiration for the character. And I remember when we did the final, final makeup tests, not long before we started shooting, and that was really where it clicked. I mean, I’d been working on it for a long time, circling the character and figuring out what I wanted to do in studying Bruce, etcetera. But there’s always a moment with roles where it clicks over and you’re like, “Now I totally get it, I can do this now,” and that really didn’t come until—I remember it pretty specifically, looking in the mirror with the final makeup done, and the eyes and everything, and being like, “There he is. Got it. Okay. Wow. Okay. Now I get it.” So it was really key.
Gordon-Levitt to don Batman cape?
Tuesday, 27 November 2012
Joseph Gordon-Levitt is in the frame to play Batman
Joseph Gordon-Levitt could be playing Batman in upcoming movie Justice League.
The US actor played policeman John Blake - who was eventually revealed to be the superhero's sidekick Robin - in this year's The Dark Night Rises, with Christian Bale as the caped crusader.
And according to Hitflix.com, sources say Joseph will "absolutely" be taking on the Batman role in the DC Comics adaptation, which sees superheroes unite to fight evil powers.
The blog also suggests Batman could make an appearance in Zack Snyder's upcoming Warner Brothers Superman reboot Man Of Steel, potentially in a post-credits sequence.
Joseph, who found fame in the sitcom 3rd Rock From The Sun, is currently promoting new biopic Lincoln, in which he plays the son of US president Abraham Lincoln.
Justice League is expected to be released in 2015.
Gordon-Levitt not taking on Batman
Wednesday, 28 November 2012
Joseph Gordon-Levitt had been rumoured to be playing Batman
Joseph Gordon-Levitt will not be playing Batman in a new movie, a spokesperson for the star has said.
 The US actor played policeman John Blake in this year's Batman film The Dark Night Rises, and this week it was reported that he would be taking on the iconic part himself in upcoming film Justice League.
However, Joseph's representative has now rubbished the rumours, telling Entertainment Weekly the report was completely false.
DC Comics adaptation Justice League sees superheroes unite to fight evil powers.
It is expected to be released in 2015.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt stops by "Sesame Street" for vocabulary lesson
By Brent Lang | Reuters – 16 hrs ago
LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Joseph Gordon-Levitt stopped by "Sesame Street" this week to help out with a vocabulary lesson. The "Lincoln" star paired up with fuzzy and huggable monster Murray to teach viewers about the meaning of "reinforce." He even consented to use his watch as a prop while Murray deployed a hammer.
On the scale of Gordon-Levitt's acting challenges, it may not rank alongside his gay hustler in "Mysterious Skin" or a time-traveling hit man in "Looper," but he gets points for being such an enthusiastic English teacher.
Gordon-Levitt next stars as a porn addicted lothario in "Don Jon's Addiction," which marks his directorial debut. Hopefully, it will not share much of a crossover audience with "Sesame Street."
Entertainment Tonight.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt's passion project DON JON (formerly known as Don Jon's Addiction) is ready to make a splash at this weekend's SXSW Film Festival, and we've got a first look at a new close encounter between JGL and co-star Scarlett Johansson, plus a detailed explanation by JGL as to why he changed the film's title.
The writer-director-star of the film writes on Facebook, "Hey everybody, So, as you might've heard already, I wrote and directed a movie last year, and it's coming out later this year. Which is absolutely crazy, and I still kinda can't believe it. Anyway, I'm posting this today to let you all know that I'm changing its title. It's now called... DON JON. I decided to change it, first of all, because DON JON is just so short and simple, and if you know me, you know I'm a fan of brevity. Second of all, it felt to me like the old title, Don Jon's Addiction was throwing some people off a bit from the point of the movie.
People were assuming it was a film about porn addiction and sex addiction, which really isn't true. That'd be sort of like saying The Maltese Falcon is a movie about a statue of a falcon. DON JON is a comedy about how men and women treat each other, and how the media we consume can create unrealistic expectations that we put on one another. That's why the story centers around a relationship between a young man (played by me) who watches too much pornography and a young woman (played by Scarlett) who watches too many romantic Hollywood movies. It's a topic I personally find fascinating and hilarious.
And while I have your attention, I figured I'd show you the first production still we're releasing of Jon's father, played by none other than Tough Tony Danza. More to show soon. We're just starting to work on the trailer now. And I'm heading down to SxSW with Tony this weekend with the film, so I'll see some of you in Austin! thanks again.. J"
I look forward to hearing your thoughts on it Mandy!
I have always found that I like JGL himself more than I like the movies he´s in. I didn´t care for neither Looper Premium Rush so I´m hoping this one will be better!
I agree, Monika.  He needs to learn to choose his roles a  little better.  I watch him in everything he does, but the last time he truly entertained me was in a goofy movie called "Kill Shot" with a very tired-looking Mickey Rourke.  He was hotter than hell, playing a numskull bad guy, but he cracked me up.
