Title: The Diner......
Post by: Berit on July 20, 2014, 04:35:49 pm
I sometimes miss a place where I can post "Hi to everyone", todays sad or joyful events, what the cat did, just peices of everyday life....a bit like The Diner on DFC. Maybe I have missed something but in that case, show me!!

I tried to start a blog but it failed so......

If this is totaly out of order, please feel free to say so.

That's a very good idea, Berit!

I think BM could do with a thread like that.

I'll start by saying that I haven't been around much for a couple of weeks, but hope to be back some more again.

We already have such a place, but it's not often used these days. It's the 1000+ Posts Club, which of course is open to everyone, not only members with 1000+ posts.
http://bettermost.net/forum/index.php/topic,1579.11830.html (http://bettermost.net/forum/index.php/topic,1579.11830.html)
But of course you can keep and use this one too, if you want. I'd be happy for a bit more chit-chat, no matter on what thread. :)

Thank you Sason. I started to think about this when I relized that there is no thread where I can just say HI . Just the ordinary daily chit chat or as I felt yesterday after seeing my mum, so sad.

Maybe the moderators could put it "bigger", more obvius so new Brokies easy can find it!

Hi, hope it's ok to post this here.

I bought this armoire on craigslist over the weekend, to use to store linens, hanging quilts & coverlets, and sheets etc in the drawers.  The finish is not too bad, but anyone think it would look okay if I painted it white?  If I do paint, it will only be the outside, not inside.  I might tack fabric on the inside back.

thanks!

Berit, how's your mum doing nowadays?

Mom is 91 and her heart isn't good. She is suffering from dementia - and she is really suffering because she remembers that she forget and mixes things up. It is hard to see her go....my dad died like blowing out a candle, just like that. I found him and it was not fun but this is worse. But I'm 60 and I've had my mom healthy up to 88 or something so I'm pretty blessed anyhow.

How are your parents, Sonja? And your son?

Today the meteorological institute in Sweden posted it's first warning ever about hot weather!! And the warning is where I live.....but I love the heat so I don't mind. I was going to take mom to the optician tomorrow but I think I'll cancel that and postpone it to cooler days.... 8)

I have a similar item (I call it a Low-boy) It is a family hand me down. When I shipped it from Australia to NZ, the removalists came on a stinking hot day and wrapped it in plastic. 2 months later when I unwrapped it in Dunedin it was covered in mildew but my sister got to work and cleaned it up. I only use it to store slides (I have thousands taken in the 60s to 80s and always plan to convert them but....) also ties which I never wear anymore. It is in the guest bedroom I would hate to see it painted but guess it depends on its surroundings.

Hi
I'm sorry to hear about you Mom, but 91 - bless her heart.  It's also hard on you, so don't forget to take care of yourself, too.

That's beautiful, Brian, looks like it has inlaid wood on the doors?  And you have slides from '60s to '80s!  I imagine when you do go through them it will be like seeing some of the places for the first time again.

Yes, not sure about painting the armoire, the wood is nice.
thank you

Very cool piece of furniture!

I'm with Berit; I wouldn't paint it, either. I like wood, too.

Maybe it could be refinished if you don't like its present appearance?

That space above the drawers looks perfect for storing a cowboy hat!  :D

It's beautiful. I wouldn't paint it either. You can give it some TLC with walnuts and specific furniture polish. That will remove some of the marks, and with the rest I guess you can live, otherwise you wouldn't have bought an old piece.
I really like the inner compartments, especially the drawer set. And Jeff is right, the space above it is made for a cowboy hat!

Losing a loved one is always terrible and it hurts, no matter how old they are. And watching the gradual decline into dementia is a tough thing. It's good that you know how blessed you (and your mother) have been, but that doesn't keep the hurt away.

Sorry about your mum. Dementia is a devastating desease. But a good thing that you already moved her to the caring fascility, it would probably have been worse for her to do it now.

My parents are pretty much status quo, thanks. My mum needs massive help from the home care service, but they seem pretty content with the quiet life they now lead. As long as they can stay together at home I'm glad.

My son is working as a Real Doctor for the first time this summer! He still has one more year to study, but can work under supervision.

I haven´t been around much either lately. I´ve been busy working, trying to move up a little but it´s taking a long time. I feel though that I´ve allowed work to become too important in my life and that I need to find my way back to other things that matters to me.
Work´s not everything, after all.

Vacation is coming up in about a month, so that´s something to look forward to.

Today, 3 years ago I was in Canmore, sharing room with Sonja. I read in my phone about a horrible thing that had happened in Norway, on a place called Utöya....3 years ago...

It was a wonderful trip to Canada and I got to spend time with lovely people. I had a long and plesant walk with Crissi to Campsite 1. A couple of days in NY with Sophia, oh we had good times! Met Meryl and John for the first time, Chuck also. Fell in love with the High line!! And fell in love with NY!!I'll be back!

Oh yeah, passports.  Mine expires in two years.
Mine expires in Sep 16.   Australian passports are for 10 years but NZ only last 5 years. I hope to apply for NZ citizenship next year. There have been discussions of changing NZ back to 10 years. I could apply for citizenship next February (5 years residency) but I have already made bookings for France in April/May and it would not look good to apply for citizenship then be out of the country so I will probably wait until am back home next June.
The photo on my current passport is a bit faint and I cannot use the fast gates now in Aust and NZ. The photo does not work. I am often directed to them by officials and have to explain that it will take longer as I will be sent back. However there are customs lines for just Australians and Kiwis in both countries which are generally quite short as most people are using the automatic gates.

Mine expires next year. It's been valid for 10 years, but since then they've changed it so my new one will only be for 5 years.

I have to remember getting the new passport very early in the year, as the queues at the police passport office are horrendeous as summer gets closer!

My passport expires early next year. I told myself there is no need to wait till then to renew. I've had the paperwork printed out for months, and I even have pictures. Now I just have to stop procrastinating.

Hot and tired, thank you. My 3 week long vacation is soon over so a bit blue but.....

I start with full time night shifts for 2 weeks, then back working days, evenings and weekends. I love my work but it is nice to be free, drinking wine in warm summer nights without worries about getting up early the next day!

I'm going back to the US august 30 and I'm staying until September 16. My hubby - yes, we are still together, working on it!! - is going to a conference in Denver and after that he and his coworker is doing work at a lab in Golden. After that is our own week in Colorado!! But what shall we do? I've ordered a book - Lonely Planet - about Colorado and I'm doing intense research on the Internet but I know that the real knowledge is at Bettermost so I'm asking you all, have you got any suggestions??

Unfortunately no NY....  :'(

I received sad news today. Rather my kids, but I'm also shocked. My son's music class teacher died yesterday, one day before the school holidays begin (=today). She also used to be my oldest daughter's music teacher some years ago, and she was very active for the school orchestra.
Only last week the school orchestra went on a three day trip. For Oliver it was the first orchestra trip and he was so happy and proud about it. When I picked him up on return, Hannah, Oliver and I chatted and joked with Mrs. S.

When Hannah told me she had died, my first reaction was "That can't be, we just talked."

But it can be of course. :(

She was in her mid-fifties. She was still at school yesterday, and Oliver saw her at the year-end-service. Later the same day she died from a heart-attack.

We are not promised tomorrow.

No, we are not. That's very sad.  :(

Just a few days ago I was looking through a book at home, and I found the newspaper clipping of the obituary of my favorite high school teacher, who died just after he retired from teaching on years of service. I'm now a year older he was when he died.  :-\

Cool diner! Worth a trip from Denver! Never heard of Flagler...must be a wide spot in the road.

Penth, I just read about your son's music teacher. So sad to lose her so young. Perhaps she had a congenital heart problem. I'm sorry for your and his loss.

Gee, a lot happens in this new diner. I'll have to follow it more closely! Have a great weekend, everyone!

As many of you already know - Facebook friends! - I, my hubby Esbjörn and my daughter Hanna had an accident with the car yesterday. Everything is OK with us, sore and bruised but OK. We went and looked at the wreck today and I'm happy that I had the car I had.......and the insurance I had. It was fully covered! The poor girl that hit us from behind is still at hospital but she isn't badly hurt, Her economy will suffer though........ :P her car is a total wreck too.

It's not far away now, my trip to the US. And I will see Crissi and Monika again!! Yehaw!

I'm at work, it's almost 2 in the middle of the night and all of my patients are sleeping....well, not all, not a young girl with severe problems sleeping. I'm doing my best to help her. My 3 work mates are watching TV and talking. It's warm outside, dark and warm. No insects.

I have a perfect print from my safety belt across my body......in blue-red-purple bruises. Happy to say that is all I got from the accident.

I'm dead tired right now. I just slept 5 hours yesterday, it's my secind night at work, one more to come.

Yes, that was very sad. He brought so much happiness to others, but he didn't have enough for himself.  :'(

EDelMar and I were out and about in downtown Denver Saturday and went to Rockmount to look for new cowboy boots for him. I looked for the display of the Shirts but couldn't find it. Almost all of the celebrity photos were gone; the only one left was a picture of Paul McCartney and a guitar that he signed. It's still an interesting place to see when you're in Denver. We also went to the new train station and ate lunch there before seeing The Sound of Music at the opera house.

In the Victorian era, a wide variety of conditions that primarily affected women were referred to as “the vapors.” Women were viewed as fundamentally weak during this period, and they were also believed to be more susceptible to a range of medical complaints. The stereotypical Victorian image of a woman swooning against a couch is a classic depiction of a woman who has been overcome by the vapors. Currently, this is not a recognized medical diagnosis.

The origins of this term lie in Ancient Greece and Rome, where doctors developed the Four Humors theory of medicine, which stated that the body was influenced by the balance of four “humors” seated in various organs of the body. Imbalances could theoretically cause ill health, and by determining the source of the imbalance, healthcare providers could prescribe the appropriate treatment. Medical professionals in the Victorian era believed that melancholy feelings had their roots in the spleen, and that they rose up through the body in the form of vapors that affected the mind.

While this might sound ludicrous today, this was widely accepted, and reinforced by claims that women were more susceptible to these feelings than men due to "irregularities" of their anatomy. The Greeks called it “female hysteria.” The condition added to the mystery of the “female condition,” and in some cases, the diagnosis hampered serious treatment of medical conditions like vaginal fistulas, a common complaint among Victorian mothers.

Not my kind of music exactly, but the song in the middle is not bad.

Ke$ha seems to be either 'you love her or hate her' type of artist.  I have her CDs, and love to dance to her music.

I'm hoping she can break the 'bad timing slump' as I call it.

Ke$ha's first CD (Animal) was released in 2010, and put 4 singles into the Top 40.  In 2011 her next CD (Cannibal) was released, and put 2 more songs on the Top 40 chart.

The last song posted above ("Die Young") was released in September 2012, and the lead off single of her 3rd CD (Warrior).  At its release, Ke$ha told radio and TV personality Carson Daly that the concept for the song "was to live each and every single day like it's your last and to always remain having a youthful spirit no matter how old I get."

"Die Young" got to #3 on the Billboard Hot 100, looking to be her next #1.  However, the week it was #3 was the same week that a shooter broke into Newtown school, shooting and killing 20 children.  At that point, playing a song that was titled "Die Young"  was insensitive, and the song was pulled from radio.  When Ke$ha was asked about it, she agreed, saying she could understand why the song would be deemed inappropriate at that time.

However, the action seems to have stalled her career.  The follow-up single ("C'mon") only got to #27 and the last single ("Crazy Kids") peaked at #40.

Perhaps......just seems like she was on a hot streak, that suddenly came to a halt.  she was back at the top of the charts the beginning of this year, but the song wasn't hers.   She was the "hook girl" (as they're known) on rapper Pitbull's song "Timber".  He rapped the main parts of the song, while she sang the chorus.

I guess this would not be news in LA or even New York but in little old Dunedin down the bottom of the world it is.
No 7 Balmac is  one of the coffee shops I oocasionally frequent but not last Sunday.

It was double-whoa for No.7 Balmac staff when James Bond actor Daniel Craig and his Oscar-winning wife Rachel Weisz dined at the Dunedin restaurant.
The actor who is perhaps best-known for playing 007 turned a few heads when he and Weisz ate Sunday lunch at the Maori Hill restaurant.
Weisz is in Dunedin to film The Light Between Oceans, also starring Michael Fassbender, which is understood to have begun shooting in the city on Saturday.

No. 7 manager Adam Jones confirmed the couple visited for ''lunch and a few wines'' and he served their table.

''They had bruschetta for an entree, followed by fish and a burger and a side salad.''

They attracted attention from fellow staff and customers, but everyone gave them space.

''I was getting questioned all the time `Is that Daniel Craig, is that Daniel Craig', and I said 'Yep'.''

'We just put them in a low-key table in the corner. They enjoyed their lunch; they chilled together.

''They were awesome people, really well-mannered, really great, loved the food,'' he said.

He shared a little conversation with them and they said they were enjoying New Zealand and planned on ''cruising through to Central [Otago]'' for a visit this week, he said.

He immediately recognised Craig, but admitted not knowing exactly who Weisz was.

''I knew her face. She's hot as,'' he said.

And the female staff were quite taken with Craig.

''All the girls were going on about him. They are both good-looking people.''

Filming in Dunedin for The Light Between Oceans is expected to last three weeks.

Don't be ungrateful!  Every other donut is covered in chocolate.  Just scrape it off.

Scraped off chocolate is not what I want!  >:(

I want REAL chocolate!

Chuck, since the zombies apparently didn't eat you, could you please be so kind and take those offensive doughnuts away, and go get me some chocolate!

Paul, you can help him carry it!

Brian, good to see you here. I have a NZ related question. I learned a song, rather a chant, at work. Later I googled and found out apparently it's from NZ.

Epo e tai tai e
(oh) epo e tai tai e
epo e tai tai
epo e tuki tuki
epo e tuki tuki e

I found a couple of explanations/translations for it. One says it's a thank you song and the text means "The big flood came and we survived it". Another says Kiwi soldiers brought it to Italy in WWII and it's not a children's song at all, but a raunchy love song, traditionally sung by (horny) young men.
Do you know this song and what's it about? And can you verify it's from NZ, because I also found it put into an African context.

That's a cute little video, Chrissi. I like that it's so natural. They're not well drilled kids performing, they are just like kids are.

I have never heard the song before.

Thanks
I only moved to NZ in 2010 and only know a few Maori words. Actually that would be true of most pakeha (white people) my age who have lived here all their life.
My research finds these words are a corruption of
He pūru taitama e
He pūru taitama hoki!
which means
(I'm) a strong young man!
A real young bull!
Originally a young man's lusty courtship song. The first verse is now a cheeky party song.
And a modified WWII chorus is now an international children's song, Epo i tai tai e.

Here is the Maori version sung by Maori students at the University of Otago in Dunedin.
I think you can tell from the audience reaction that the words are not a child's nursery rhyme

Thank you, Brian and Sophia, for the other versions.
Brian, I loved the audience's reactions to it. ;D
I'm so gonna tell this my colleagues next time we sing that song  Somehow funny, in both meanings of the word, that it became a nursery rhyme all over the world. ;D

Myyy, I really feel sorry for you, Chuckie, and all Americans. In my family nobody* has worked since Dec 19th, and we all have another free week in front of us.

*('cept my daughter's BF. He saves as many vacation days as he can because he already works but still has big exams to pass in a couple of months.)

In NZ, 25/12, 26/12, 1/1 & 2/1 are all public holidays so we are having 2 very long weekends in a row.
Australia does not have 2/1 as a public holiday but many will take it off anyway. Generally most businesses, factories and government offices close if possible or operate on minimum staff for at least 2 weeks and of course it is school and university summer holidays for 6 or more weeks.
While most shops are open on public holidays (except 25/12) but the workers are getting double time pay.

My little baby is a doctor!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  ;D ;D ;D

Yesterday my son graduated from med school!!!

It was a gorgeous day, perfect in every way! I had been so nervous that something would go wrong, mainly regarding the arrangements for my own and my mom's needs of transport and stuff. But nothing went wrong, everything worked out perfectly!

The weather was as beautiful as could be, a boneless blue sky and no wind. The ceremony in the cathedral was beautiful, speaches and music and handing over diplomas. My son was one of the student speakers. His girlfriend was one of the musicians.

Then we all went to the venue where my son, his gf and two of their coursemates threw a party for like 100 people, all their family and friends. It was great! Everyone was happy for them, lots of nice people to talk to, yummi food, a little garden outside where people could sit around. Such a wonderful celebration!

It was just the most perfect of days!!!!

I'm the proudest mum on earth!!!!!!!!!!!!   ;D ;D

And yes, I have pics in my phone. Problem is, I don't know how to get them from my phone and onto the forum   ::)

And northern Sweden is beautiful in the summer, you just have to get used to it being daylight all the time.
