Title: People's Sexiest Man Alive: George $%&*ing Clooney?

What a crock o' shite.

Does anyone else here find him insufferably smug, or is that just me?

First, an Oscar he doesn't begin to deserve and now this.  Is there no end to the madness???

??? I thought he was already Sexiest Man a coupla years ago??

But, I have to say...I do think Clooney is incredibly sexy. When Jon Stewart woke up next to him, I didn't know it at the time, but that turned out to be one a the two highlights of that disastrous show (The other was Meryl Streep and Lily Tomlin riffing off each other introducing Robert Altman). Sorry to bring up painful memories.

I'l'l take my flogging now, Barb. Here are the cat'o'nine tails.

I got nothing against Clooney, but People's magazine does not tell me who is the sexiest man alive!
I can't abide by these lists, whose standard of beauty are they using?  Most often, it isn't mine!   8)

Barb, who do you think should be the sexiest man alive?  ;D
Ok..that was a rhetorical question ..lol

"Who won?"

Deep Sigh....  oh well.    Jake gets dissed once again.

I think George wins because all the old ladies like him.      Of course if I was 70 or 80 he might look good to me as well.    But right now I only see one person as the sexiest man.....

LOL, David!

I guess in People magazine's view, middle-aged and smarmy is sexy.  And young, drop-dead gorgeous, soulful and sensuous is not.  At least not this year, anyway.  Good to know.

 :P

No, they don't define sexy for me - in fact I can't remember the last time I agreed with one of their "winners" (since Ralph Fiennes, Joseph Fiennes, nor any other British actor except Sean Connery or maybe Richard Burton has ever been selected).  I'd just like to see them get it right for once.

I agree with you Jess, I like George Clooney (esp 10 years ago George Clooney, yummy!!)   :-*

Sorry Natali, but in a lot of pictures HJ looks kinda strange, and in at least one of them he is downright ugly!  (JMO...)

But Jakey on the other hand, is never ugly, he is always divinely sexy, pretty, drop-dead gorgeous, soooooo good-looking,,,,,,, *sigh*

George Clooney is overrated.  Yeah, he's got that Cary Grant thing going on, he is a great looking guy, but THE sexiest??!?!?  C'mon.  Cary Grant was gentlemanly, Cary Grant was smooth, Cary Grant was suave.

Sexy and Cary Grant do not go together.

He's a prankster, he jokes constantly, is a commitment-phobe and the babes on E! tv are so in love with him that they give him coverage waaaaaaaaaaaaay over what his career history deserves.

To People Magazine:

I'd like a recount

now this statement I have to agree with whole heartedly...I think he is an attractive man...but come on..he is not god's officially licensced gift to the world...that one dark haired girl needs to just go ahead, throw off her clothes and writhe on the floor...it would be a refreshing taste of subtly....(Nodding to Cheers and Dr. Kramer)

Jake sexy?? Not really. What I'd really like to do with him is feed him, a nice hot bowl of pho. But if I tried to seduce him, I imagine he'd just try to cover up my breasts like he did to Jennifer Anniston. Now, with George, my first urge is to come up to him and wrap my, um, limbs, around his neck and give him a big hug!!

I smell a campaign on Clooney's part (or his agent) to be named sexiest man of the year.  I mean he was on the campaign trail for that Oscar. First picture released from the Oscar luncheon is of George Clooney.

PPL magazine might be playing to it's audience. Are the subscribers/buyers of the magazine a grayer crowd?  Clooney would be the perfect fit for that.

Yep, Jake might be too sexy, too sensuous for that group.

Still aint' right!  >:(      Wasn't JFK JR sexiest man of the year when he was in his mid 20's?  Maybe younger ppl read that magazine back in the 1980's.

Well, they also listed Leonardo diCaprio, so we really should not take this list too seriously.

Let us pray that Jake makes the front page next year, then, and only then will I take this list seriously.

I think Leo is cute. Now I do, anyway. I keep changing my mind about him, and his Titanic days, actually, were a low point for me. But I thought he was hot in The Departed.

(I was saying something similar to a friend, and told her I went up and down on Leo. She said, Yeah, you wish. )

In case anybody's interested, Salon ran a list today of its alternate picks and called it Sexiest Man Living:

http://www.salon.com/ent/feature/2006/11/17/sexiest_man/index.html?source=newsletter (http://www.salon.com/ent/feature/2006/11/17/sexiest_man/index.html?source=newsletter)

They deliberately tried to avoid the standard matinee idols who've gotten the SMA designation. But some of their picks are pretty hot, I think, including Jon Stewart, Alan Rickman, Mark Ruffalo, Bruce Springstein, Richard Dawkins. My whole list would be somewhat different from theirs, but I like the idea.

If I only knew of him from his photographs (especially that one - WOW), there'd be no way I couldn't.  But the trouble is I've heard him speak and seen what's in his eyes when he does.  Megalomania is not the least bit attractive to me.

did we get an actual read on George's gaity?  Or is that you guys just WISHIN again?

By the way, in my perusal of the German Hugh Jackman site - heavily trafficked by gay men I might add, they did a little spoof of the Martini and Rossi commercial where a man answers the door at a hopping party and George is there with his tux on and a glass of Martini and Rossi, and the man says "Sorry, George, no Hugh, no party."

Heh, just a matter of taste.  I thought DiCaprio was cute back in his Titanic days.  Now he's matured, filled out and he's got a fat jowly face.  Before, he was younger and thinner and his face had more structure to it.  Now it's just bland and round like a bowl of pudding, eh. :P

OK, OK, back to George Clooney.  I hadn't heard he was gay at all.  Someone said earlier that there is a 'good source' saying that he is, but so far in the mainstream, no one has even breathed a word.  Nicole Kidman bet the man $10,000 that he would be married with kids by the time he was 40.  She mailed him a check on his 40th birthday.  He mailed it back saying 'Double or nothing' by the time he was 50.  It seems strange she would do this if Hollywood insiders know he is gay.  Unless of course, he's deeply in the closet.  He is after all, what was called a 'confirmed bachelor'.  He's been married before and is very openly against having children and not really inclined to get married again.  Yep, could be signs he is gay.  Could also be signs of someone who got married before and doesn't want to bother again.  Hard to tell.

He certainly is , i`m having a mad Daniel Craig Crush at the moment { New Bond} i watched Casino Royal the other day and he is amazing. There`s this shot where he walks out of the ocean , in a soaking wet , skin tight pair of trunks , and it`s stayed with me Blimey !. Judy Dench has been saying how she didn`t know where to look as he is a `Very Big Boy`. Hugh Grant is cool and collected i love Bridget Jones and About A Boy , he has a clumsey , educated feel to him , very nice.

So, the SMA for 2017 is some guy named Blake Shelton. His name is the sexiest thing about him! Our friend John Trudell said it seems like America has stopped trying. My theory is different. I think they offered the title to this guy (pictured) but he turned it down. Is it merely a coincidence that he's on the cover of Entertainment Magazine right now?

??? Stopped trying what? To produce sexy men? To reject a dumb choice by a popular weekly magazine with an annual gimmick?

There are plenty of sexier men than Blake Shelton, for sure. In fact, I'm kind of surprised that Barb felt so strongly against George Clooney. He seems fine to me. With the exception of Blake Shelton and Adam Levine, most of the SMAs have seemed acceptable, at least at the time they were named (obviously I'd have other thoughts now about, for example, Mel Gibson).

Is that the guy from Outlander? I haven't seen that show.

It's funny, though, now that I think of it; we were talking about the SMA on Jeff's blog and I now realize that most of the men we were saying we found sexier are not American: Colin Farrell, Christian Bale, the Hemsworths, Ryan Gosling. So maybe there's something to John's theory.

That's an interesting point. When was the last time the SMA was an American?

(Mel Gibson was born here, but I think maybe he doesn't count.)

I don't think John will mind if I paste his whole quote here: "Donald Trump is presidential; Jeff Sessions is honest; Roy Moore is a Christian; and Blake Shelton is the "Sexiest Man Alive." It's like America has totally stopped trying."

And here's the cover of Entertainment with Sam Heughan (yes, indeed, he is the hero in Outlander):

No idea who Blake Skelton is.

I never got George Clooney. You might think that because I'm gay I'd get him, like some women do, but I don't.  :(

I don't really "get" him, either. That is, he's not on my list of top actor hotties. Still, I can see why some women would put him on theirs. And oddly enough, I somehow feel like I can even sort of understand why many gay men would not.

In any case, he seems very suave and smart and politically correct, so I like those things about him. And .... ohhh, OK, if he asked me out I'd probably go if it were a nice enough restaurant.

Well, wasn't he the original SMA? That counts for something! But yeah, I knew he'd spent part of his childhood here but I couldn't remember how the order went. Same for Christian Bale, I believe.

Well, that's a good and funny quote. Kudos to John for that. But since at least half of America disagrees with at least the first three things, let's not blame the whole country! As for BS, I just blame People.

I think the idea that Blake Shelton was a last-minute substitute for some more legitimately sexy candidate -- someone who backed out or has generated rumors of sexual harassment or something otherwise disqualifying -- might be valid.

I think one year Salon countered the SMA issue by coming up with a list of men who were maybe kind of hot (but not necessarily that hot) but were also chosen for being intelligent, politically progressive, etc. And as I recall, that year Louis C.K. came out at or near the top. Oops!

Was I that obtuse? I didn't mean he didn't count as the SMA, I meant I guessed he didn't really count as a SMA from the U.S.

And I just realized, we forgot Hugh Jackman from that list of men we found sexier who weren't from the U.S.

I've never been that big on Hugh Jackman, either. He's like George Clooney -- I get the appeal, and he seems like a nice and very talented guy, but for me ... ehh.

I looked for the Louis CK thing on Salon and, miraculously, couldn't find it -- perhaps because it's buried under about 100,000 other things about LCK, perhaps because they hastily took it down. But here's one of Salon's "alternative" SMA lists with smart people:

https://www.salon.com/2006/11/17/sexiest_man (https://www.salon.com/2006/11/17/sexiest_man)

And I happened across this, which I completely agree with (aside from the fact that, personally, I think Bradley Cooper is perfectly fine as SMA):

I completely agree with you about Bradley Cooper.

I have two personal favorites with which I expect no one to agree: David Boreanaz and Mike Vogel.

Of course Boreanaz is well known from Buffy the Vampire Slaver, Angel, and Bones, and he's now in that series about Navy Seals.

I would say Mike Vogel is hardly an A-list actor, yet he seems to be one of those actors who always has work. IMO the picture with his main entry at IMDb is, at best, not good. He seems to me to be one of those guys who gets better looking as he matures.

Curiously enough, all three of them, Cooper, Boreanaz, and Vogel, have close, even strong, ties to the Philadelphia area. Cooper was born here. Boreanaz grew up here (his father is a well-respected and even loved weather reporter on a local TV station).  Vogel was born in Abington, a Philadelphia suburb. All three of them actually grew up in this region.

This line from a Slate article reminded me of John Trudell's comment about America having stopped trying:

Quote
After a year of unprecedented White House villainry, white supremacists marching openly in the streets, and nonstop revelations about sexual abusers in our midst, naming a neck-bearded bully “sexy” was a generous pinch of sea salt in America’s gaping wounds.

http://www.slate.com/blogs/xx_factor/2017/11/17/gwen_stefani_finally_admits_that_her_boyfriend_blake_shelton_isn_t_sexy.html (http://www.slate.com/blogs/xx_factor/2017/11/17/gwen_stefani_finally_admits_that_her_boyfriend_blake_shelton_isn_t_sexy.html)

Also, this is sort of an opinion piece but if true it sounds like Blake Shelton is far worse than I even thought:

Quote

He's making me miss Adam Levine!

Jeff, your picks are nice looking, but I think the SMA has to be an A-list or instantly recognizable name. (Blake Shelton barely fits that requirement, if you ask me, but I gather he's famous in some circles.)

Even worse, he has a history of bigoted tweets.

At this point, it looks like they should have just picked some random famous guy who is fairly universally considered good looking and, as far as we know now (fingers crossed), has never done anything hugely scandalous. Was Keau Reeves busy? Couldn't Jon Hamm have stepped up?

I take your point, but, see, there you go. "I gather he's famous in some circles." Blake Shelton isn't famous to you because you don't watch The Voice (at least I assume you don't) or listen to Country Music (I assume you don't do that either, unless there's something you aren't telling us  ;D  ;) ). To people who do both, I'm sure Blake Shelton at least qualifies as A-List and instantly recognizable. (I don't do either, but I do watch TV, so I know who he is. I see him all the time in commercials for The Voice.)

I think my guy David Boreanaz is the same deal. To fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and they are legion, or all the folks (like me) who watched him for years on Bones, he is instantly recognizable and I venture A-List to them.

What I'm saying is, I've come to have the feeling that A-List is in the eye of the beholder, or at least depends on the perspective of the beholder.

I do watch TV but I don't watch The Voice. I actually do listen to country music. Or at least sometimes. Well, OK, not for the past 30 years or so. But I visited Nashville a couple of times in the late '80s and early '90s, went to the Grand Ol' Opry both times (first in the historic original building, then in the new location) and bought a double-album-size CD called A History of Country Music that I really enjoyed. Its opening song was a scratchy recording of "Turkey in the Straw," then it went all the way through the Carter Family and Hank Williams and Johnny Cash and Dolly Parton and Kris Kristopherson and George Jones and schlocky relatively contemporary guys like Hank Williams Jr. And actually if you count Johnny Cash I have listed to and really enjoyed country music fairly recently.

Quote

Oh, there's no doubt he's famous. But A-list almost by definition means somebody recognizable to everybody. If you say "Brad Pitt" you don't have to name some movies he's been in for people to understand who you're talking about. Almost everybody has stood in a grocery store checkout line.

Quote
I think my guy David Boreanaz is the same deal. To fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and they are legion, or all the folks (like me) who watched him for years on Bones, he is instantly recognizable and I venture A-List to them.

See my point above. For one thing, I totally know who you're talking about. (I wouldn't have recognized his name, but when you say Bones, I know who you mean.) He's only kind of famous. If he were in a movie, they wouldn't put his name up on the marquee. If the director were trying to cast Jennifer Lawrence in a movie, they wouldn't try to entice her with "David Boreanaz has already signed" (unless she happens to be friends with David Boreanaz, of course).

Compare him to the SMAs of the past. In fact, let's try a little game: Brad. George. Johnny. Tom. Matthew. Chris. David. Ben. Dwayne. Bradley. Ryan. Mel. Hugh. Nick. Channing. Richard. I bet you can guess most of those SMAs of the past by their first name alone. I can see a few that might be slightly more challenging, but once you figure them out you'll go, oh, of course. (Hint: the David on the list isn't David Boreanaz, though the actual SMA David's last name does begin with B.)

And I bet most average Americans, if they were given both first and last names, can at least summon an image of just about every SMA ever. I mean, I don't watch soccer, but I would have no trouble with that one. With the possible exception of Adam (I knew who Adam was, but only because when my sons were little they used to listen to Maroon 5.) And now, I guess, Blake. If you said "David Boreanaz," a lot of people would give you a blank look except avid fans of Buffy and Bones (who, I realize, are legion, but still).

Quote
What I'm saying is, I've come to have the feeling that A-List is in the eye of the beholder, or at least depends on the perspective of the beholder.

Well, then maybe the SMA should come from the A+ List.  ;D

I'm assuming the name I bolded and italicized is Johnny Depp.   This is a good chance to talk about the perspective or tastes of others.
