I've actually been pretty sick the past few days, since about friday, a combination of flu and sinus infection that tonight moved into my ear (I never realized how painful an ear ache could be...) so I haven't really been doing much writing. I had intended to have something posted today, too. But, I'm getting better and I have a doctor's app. tomorrow so hopefully with some medicine I'll be writing again soon. If I'm feeling good except for my ear tomorrow you might even get something then :D

Glad you're looking foreward to it though, I'm pretty excited about this new one myself :)

SPOILERS

I love that they are just passengers on the same train who start to notice each other....and then Jack misses Ennis one time that he ends up calling his house. And the whole "I ain't queer" thing made me giggle. Sure Ennis, that's why you're quite happy to get picked up by some strange guy and go for a drink with him.....

One thing that's left me wondering is Jack's phone call to Ennis's house. KE paused a long time before answering Jack's question, I wonder why that was. Is he puzzled that someone is saying he is Ennis's friend? Has he had inklings about Ennis in the past and this man calling has set him wondering?

I wonder what Ennis's story is...Jack seems so distanced from his life; in a marriage that so soon is going nowhere, with a baby on the way, with his conflicting feelings towards other guys, his problems being able to write. He seems very down about his life, very detached. I feel for him.

I'm glad the "I ain't queer" line made you giggle because when I was writing it I just had to shake my head and think "Oh, Ennis..."

And Ennis (and K.E. for that matter) is a huge mystery in this story. I always felt like Ennis was a bit of a mystery while watching the movie and I wanted to portray some of that in my story, so I'm glad I have you wondering what his story is and what that pause meant... we'll find out more about him in the next chapter ::)

I think actually Victoria is your biggest fan, but I carry a close second! Her Dad's in the hospital again so she has not seen Chapter 3 or 4 yet, but I told her they're up. Keep your pencils sharpened or whatever it is you writer types do!

Seeing Ruby is turning into a fan girl on Mandy's story, I recon I should get in line too. The good news is the story is still just at the beginning (or I thought so based on the no. of chapters). Hopefully I can catch up soon.

It isn't really going at all... I haven't even started the next chapter. I haven't abandoned it though and I won't, it just hasn't hit me yet. I think I'm going to do a read through of the entire thing tonight and that will help me get a better grasp on what I want to do with it because honestly I haven't ever read the whole thing in one go since about chapter 3 and I think that may be part of the problem, I need to get a better sense of where the characters were in the beginning. But I also swore to myself I'd work on grad school stuff tonight :-\ Really all I want to do is curl up with a mug of hot chocolate and read a book!

Just kidding... it shouldn't be long now, I plan to work on it tomorrow afternoon so hopefully it will be up by Monday at the latest :D

In the mean time, here's great recipie for that hot cocoa (at least I can deliver something...) courtesy of Tyler Florence! :

3/4 cup powdered milk
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
3/4 cup sugar
1/2 cup cocoa powder
4 ounces bittersweet chocolate
Homemade Marshmallows, recipe follows

Combine all the dry ingredients in a large bowl and mix well. Take the bittersweet chocolate and roughly chop it up to give a chunky but consistent size. Mix well with a wooden spoon and then store in a dry airtight container. To make the hot chocolate, simply add 1 cup of water per 1/2 cup of hot cocoa mix. Heat in a small saucepan over low heat, stirring with a whisk. Heat until hot, but do not boil, about 6 to 7 minutes. Serve with marshmallows.

Homemade Marshmallows:
1/4 cup powdered gelatin
1 cup cold water
2 cups sugar
2 egg whites
2 cups confectioners' sugar, sifted, plus more for dusting pan and marshmallows
Butter, for greasing pan

In a medium sized saucepan soak the gelatin in the water. After the gelatin has softened, approximately 10 minutes, add the regular sugar and then gently dissolve over low heat, approximately 8 minutes. Remove from the heat and allow to cool to room temperature.
In a mixer, beat the egg whites until stiff peaks and then fold in the sifted confectioners' sugar. While the mixer is on low, slowly poor in the cooled gelatin mixture. Increase the speed and beat until white and thick. The volume should double in size.

Line an 8 by 8-inch baking dish with high sides with foil, grease slightly with butter, and coat with confectioners' sugar. Alternatively, you can use a baking sheet, but the marshmallows will not be as tall. Pour marshmallow mixture in and top with more sifted confectioners' sugar. Leave out overnight or for at least 3 hours to set. The marshmallow should be light and spongy when set.

Loosen marshmallow from edges of tray and invert onto a large cutting board. Peel off foil and use a large knife to cut the marshmallows into cubes. Dredge each piece in confectioners' sugar.

I think I will write at least half of the story before posting it (if I post it, I am a little nervous about it), because I never really know if I can write or not with the pain in my hand and shoulder.... :-\

Aw thanks, June! I was pretty excited about it. I just joined around there a couple of months ago. I don't post very often (except for the last couple of days because there's been a really good discussion of Bailey's new story) so I was really surprised and happy that people over there were even reading it :)

I like this Ennis, he quiet and reserved but he's more in touch ( I hope that makes sense) His "I can't (or was it don't want) to talk about this now" implied so much more than movie Ennis ever did. I'm well and thoroughly hooked already! And though I will always hold the original dear to my heart, I am loving the fan fiction stories. They are written with so much love. I'm also following another story and am so far up-to chapter 5 of it, but it appears I've got about 397 chapters to make-up!!! Not that I'm complaining. I'm sure I'll love every moment of it! I still love the original and will always view it as "sacred text" - the tragedy of it. But these stories allow me to fantasize that Jack and Ennis somehow achieved happiness, and I need to believe that's somehow true.

Lovely to hear from you RouxB! I kinda feel I know you already, 'cause I've seen your pic elsewhere here (?a BBM function in Boston, if I remember correctly?)

Yeah, the same thing I was so sick with before apparently never went away completely, so now I'm on even stronger meds and missing more work :-\ (not that I've really been missing it ;) )

And I can't wait to see what you think once I finally post it!! I'm trying to decide just how "David" to make him... if you know what I mean. I'm having lots of fun writing it (which is weird since it's a pretty heavy fic mood wise...)

I'm reading "A Love Born from Steel." I just love the idea that Jack and Ennis are living happily-ever-after somewhere, in a Queen Anne farmhouse in Texas!

I came to it via the back door, so to speak, in that I saw a thread in the Happy Holidays section, where Jack was sending messages about how he and Ennis celebrated Christmas. Well, I can't begin to tell you how moved I was, so I sent him a teary little message saying how happy I was for them. "Jack" sent the most beautiful message back - I still get a lump in my throat when I think about it. I was so thrilled to actually get a message from dear sweet Jack. And he made me laugh. Said that even though they looked back on ol' Brokeback with great fordness, they were much happier in their big ol' comfy bed together, than they ever were in the tent that smelled of cat piss or worse on Brokeback!

It was the message from Jack that made me realise there was another option. It wasn't all doom and gloom. I could fantasize about them living happy, loving, long lives together.

I read all of Jack's messages in the Happy Holidays section first, before visiting the fan fiction section - and actually read "Just by Looking at You," before visiting Lazy L Farm.

Leslie's fic showed me that Jack and Ennis could have a happy ending, and I've been addicted ever since. I can't even imagine seeing those messages from lazy L jack before reading the story, I think it would have given me a heart attack!

Like I said before, I'm incredibly flattered that Just By Looking at You was your first fic and that you liked it so much! That means the world to me and I hope I can give our boys a happy ending too. :-*

Yeah that was rough to read, Mandy :'( Reading about Jack's abuse as a boy is always hard to read but the way you wrote it was particularly chilling :(

AND the poor guy is so uncertain and unhappy, he doesn't want to disappoint any of them, all he really wants is to be himself and be loved just as he is. ::damn gonna cry again:: Beautifully written, you've just sucked me right in and now I really care about what happens. Can't wait for Chapter 8 and Ennis perspective and maybe a little more Ennis background (please ;) )

Good question... That's a draft error, I'll go back and fix it. Ennis at the end of the last chapter asked Jack if they could have a drink the next night, but I never wrote them arranging the actual place and time. I just left it unsaid. Thanks for letting me know it's confusing!! :)

I loved your reference to "ain't." Do you have a direct insight into my soul?! :o I'm an Australian and "ain't" is a word that is not used in this country. However, since seeing BBM I find that it now generously sprinkles my internal vocabulary - my inner, thinking voice. "Ain't" is there a lot now. And I like having it there. Given me a connection to Jack and Ennis. I'm waiting for the day when it slips out in public. I'll be sure to get a very quizzical look! :-\

Jack just lying there enveloped in the aura of their lovemaking, scents, rumpled sheets, atmosphere...anyone who has ever been in love with a grand passion knows what that's like and you captured it beautifully. Then later when Lureen laid out her suspicions and kicked Jack out for the night, riding the train until it quit running and ending up in that seedy little motel so he could wallow in his pain. This Jack doesn't bitch and moan as much as canon Jack but he sure wallows in his misery instead of taking the bull by the horns so to speak. He'll do better though once he finds his center and that isn't going to happen until he knows he can trust Ennis and trust that what he's feeling is real and reciprocated.

Looking forward to Chapter 10 ;D

I'm so happy that Ennis considers Jack to be his friend, that's so good for Jack. As was the fact that Jack got to meet little Junior. That was real sweet :)
I can't wait to find out how things will play out with Lureen and how the breakfast meeting with Dan will go.

I love the pacing of this story, Mandy and it was beautifully written, as always :-*

He won't wallow in it, like TLBoH Jack tended to do.

There is always a barrier at a certain point in a story, where you need to try and find the energy to make the story go on, and you really are at a point where things are going to change, so it's really exciting! I understand the feeling, I have the same thing with my story now, but maybe you need to keep in mind the ending (if you already have that in mind) and work towards that! Not that I want it to end! :P

Or, maybe you need Ennis to make you think. He's always the thinker,almost too much of a thinker, worrying about what could happen...to the point of being introverted. Isn't that the definition of his life, to a degree? It happens while he's waiting for something to happen. Better not keep Jack waiting too long, or he'll happen and move on...NOT!! They're fated to be with each other...they have to figure a way to talk out their fears and hopes together...and you have to figure out how to tell us about that talk...just like you have so successfully for the past 12 chapters.

Or, maybe you need to kick back with a Hornsby's Hard Cider Amber Draft...works for me!

Do I ramble sometimes?! Just so much to say...Ennis should try it sometime.

Funny you should mention Zodiac. Saw "Zodiac" yesterday afternoon. Long [155 minutes], but it held my attention the whole time and I coulda watched more. Jake stars, and does an excellent job. The film gradually becomes all his, just like the search for the Zodiac engulfed his character in real life. Won't give any spoilers, but there are a coupla favorite scenes for me, especially one towards the end.

Maybe seeing that will give the ol' muse a jump-start, too.

I really liked how you write Ennis and Junior together, that's so sweet :) Loved this line, it's so very simple but just lovely:

I really loved your first paragraph, it was beautifully written:

Ennis woke early and blinked into the sun making its slow entry through the dingy curtains and into the room. Jack lay next to him on his stomach. His mouth hung open, his face pressed into the rough fabric of the pillow. He snored softly, not enough to wake Ennis, but enough for him to hear it and to make him smile just a little. What harm would there be in that? Jack wasn’t awake, he couldn’t see him. Ennis wondered if Jack would notice the smile even if he was awake. There were days when he thought that no one saw how much he felt things, that he didn’t let anything come to the surface. Other days, he felt transparent. Those were the days that scared him, and there had been many of them since he’d met Jack Twist

And I loved these lines too:

“You sleep all right?” Ennis said, feeling warm with Jack pressed against him, happy to have taken part in Jack’s waking ritual.

I also loved the talking to Ennis gave Jack, I think Jack really needs to hear stuff like that now and again *sigh* They both have a lot of stuff to work out and deal with and none of it is going to be easy :(
I wonder what Jack will do now? And how Ennis will deal with KE? Lots to look forward too Mandy :)
