Okay, so I thought it'd be kinda fun to see who fellow Brokies had crushes on when they were teenagers. :D
Whose poster did you kiss before you went to sleep at night? Who did you daydream about during boring lessons at school?
And those of you still in the first flush of youth...who do you have crush on right now?
A couple of mine for starters...
Kevin Bacon in 'Footloose'.
Hellfire, he's still hawt! That voice...
I also went through a Val Kilmer stage when I was about 15. Hehe...
Then I saw 'Alien' and fell in love with Tom Skerritt...

If anyone laughs I'll hunt you down like a dog.
Speed Racer
OK so I wasn't excatly a teenager, but I didn't have any other crushes
-
All right, Nikki, I'll admit it: Parker Stevenson. And, lucky for me, my little sister had a crush on (yuk) Shaun Cassidy, so there was plenty of material around the house, those being the "Hardy Boys" days.
Look at those baby blues (foreshadowing Jake?). To boot, he had a degree in architecture (Princeton), just in case acting didn't work out.
Never forgave him for the Kirstie Alley thing, though.

Speed Racer
Oh Scott, no-one's laughing...*snigger, snigger*. Don't even know what I'm laughing at. Who is he? Anyone have a pic??
-
I'm glad you asked! The first person I remember having a crush on is George Harrison:
and then both Peter McEnery and Hayley Mills when the Moon-Spinners came out:

and then Harrison Ford, in Star Wars:

Hi Paul! Yeah, I remember him now - Kirsty Alley's ex-hubby? He's got the look of a real dirty boy underneath that angelic face methinks... ;)

Nikki, now look what you've started.
Here's my other teenage crush (I was an equal opportunity teen):
Lindsay Wagner as Jamie Sommers:

-
(http://www.mischanews.com/wp-content/uploads/Jake%20Gyllenhaal%20-%201%20-%20300%20-%20Jarhead.jpg)
Unoriginal, I know - but I was only 17 when Donnie Darko came out. I've been hooked every since. One of these days, he'll see the light...he'll come to me. Hehehe.
-
Nikki, I have to agree: though I was no longer a teenager, Val Kilmer was awfully cute in "Top Secret":

Bruce Jenner, winner of the Decathalon in the 1976 Montreal Olympics, I would still love to meet him some day.
(I think I still have a picture of him hidden in my bible at home!)
-
Nikki, I have to agree: though I was no longer a teenager, Val Kilmer was awfully cute in "Top Secret":
OMG, that was the film that started it for me! I saw it twice at the cinema.
That Shaun Cassidy doll is hilarious . Look at him with his chest all out on display
Lindsay Wagner as Jamie Sommers:
Whilst we're on the subject of semi-automatic women, I remember looking at Wonderwoman a lot more than was decent for a 11 year old without knowing what why i wanted to ::)

One of these days, he'll see the light...he'll come to me. Hehehe.
You'll have to fight me for him first Andrew >:( ;)
-
(http://img124.imageshack.us/img124/2596/tonymusante1ask9.jpg)
Tony Musante. Anybody besides me lust after "David Toma"? I couldn't get enough of em. And then they put that crappy pretender "Baretta" on and he had a cockatoo and he got more famous. "Toma" was a whole lot better. And Musante is a WHOLE LOT HOTTER!!!
-
You'll have to fight me for him first Andrew >:( ;)
You are so on!
-
Nicky, I think you might have started something here! :)
I'm probably showing my age a bit, but I don't care. These guys were HOT in my day!
I thought Robin Askwith was just so se....se.....<whoo!>...SEXY when I was a kid!
Jason Gedrick!
Tony Dow (Wally on "Leave It To Beaver")
Michael Landon. Those eyes.. that hair.... that strong thick neck and broad shoulders. <swoon>
(http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j43/Davidindy/MichaelLandon.jpg)
David Cassidy!
Cowboy Bob! (He was a cartoon host here in Indianapolis when I was a kid) HOT!!!
Barry Williams (Greg on "The Brady Bunch")
The list goes on and on and on....
Give me a few minutes Nicky! I'm sure I can think of some more. :)
-
At the very top of my list .. Clint Eastwood .. :D

Yup. I remember drooling over him in the short lived TV series "Voyagers".
-
Gotta ask: who's Robin Askwith??
Well for one thing, he starred in "Hans Brinker", one of my favorite movies when I was a kid. I think the movie was made in 1969 or 1970. I always thought he was so cute and hot. :)
-
Gotta ask: who's Robin Askwith??
He was an actor in the 70s who starred in a series of sex comedies with very British humour, called the 'Confessions' series ('Confessions of a Window Cleaner' being one of the best known). Appalling films, but they kept the British film industry afloat and were very popular.

There was an obscure movie made in 1965 called "Inside Daisy Clover".
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0059314/ (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0059314/)
Daisy Clover (Natalie Wood) is a 15 year old Tomboy who dreams of being a Hollywood star. After auditioning for producer Raymond Swan of Swan studios she becomes the toast of Hollywood. Daisy must then come to terms with her new found fame and the 1930's Hollywood star treatment. She gets married to a young and handsome Robert Redford who is Gay and secretly dating a very young and handsome Roddy McDowall !

Frankly you're all delusional, but I hate to see so many in so much pain so I'll fess up...
...The whole Jake / Nat thing is an elaborate ruse to confuse the tabloids and other vested interests whilst we slip away to the Isle of Wight for our forthcoming nuptials. Jake didn't want any fuss, bless him...
... Believe me, I know how disappointing this must be for you all, but rest assured that after the whole Kirsten thing he has wisely decided to give himself up to the arms of a more mature woman. The present plan is for him to give up his acting career, ending on a BBM high, to keep house with me here in Southampton...
...Please can I ask you to keep this to yourselves for the time-being. Your discretion is appreciated, friends. What's that Jake, darling? Ahh, he sends his love to you all - he's cleaning the toilet at the moment so can't come to the computer right now...
;D
Aw Nicky, I remember this post of yours very well!!! In fact there was one night where I spent hours and hours looking for it, and I never could find it. :( Thank you for resurecting it! Now I am off to post it in "what is your favorite post at BetterMost?" thread...

Christopher Atkins from The Blue Lagoon.
The Battlestar Galactica Guys. Apollo (Richard Hatch) and Lt. Starbuck (Dirk Benedict)
Christopher Reever as Superman and his character in Somewhere in Time
Gregory Harrison from Trapper John, M.D. I think his character was called Dr. Gonzo. The weekly opening always had him coming out of the shower.
Sorry, don't have any photo's to post.

Hmm. No, I haven't seen that one yet. I still get misty eyed over him in "The Great Gatsby". Now that I think about it, that movie had a very Brokeback Mountain like ending! Especially when his father goes thru his sons stuff after..... well, you know. Reminds me of Ennis at the Twist home.
-
Too many of these beauties are either before or after my time.
Well, this is embarassing, but OK, in chronological order, and with the movie (or whatever) that first did it for me:
Paul Michael Glaser (Starsky and Hutch)
Shaun Cassidy (The Hardy Boys)
Tommy Shaw (lead guitarist of the rock band Styx)
Rick Springfield (General Hospital & "Jesse's Girl")
Kevin Bacon (Footloose)
Andrew McCarthy (St. Elmo's Fire)
Those were my teenage and early 20s celebrity crushes. From the age of about 25 on, it's been
Harrison Ford (Blade Runner)
John Cusack (Say Anything)
Ralph Fiennes (The English Patient)
Joseph Fiennes (Shakespeare in Love)
And the rest is history...
-
Kevin Bacon (Footloose)
Ralph Fiennes (The English Patient)
Barb, AT LAST another KB in Footloose fan! What that boy did to my 16 year old hormones... :P
Ooooo, and I dig your Ralph Fiennes crush too. Did you see him in 'The Constant Gardener'? He was wonderful, and should've got an Oscar nom IMHO >:(

Mark Owen (who OMG! has become HAWTER now along with the rest of the Take That boys - particularly Gary. *growls*) and to a lesser extent Robbie Williams
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Take_That (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Take_That)

Stephen Gatley (who turned out to be Gay *sob*)

To a lesser extent - Sean MacGuire, Andre Aggassie, Joshua Jackson... I'm sure I'll think of others!!
Thanks Kelda and Jane!
Oh yeah, Mark Owen was DEFINITELY the one for me out of Take That. And he's still smokin' hawt :P

Oh man, how did I come so late to this party?
The original, and first big crush:
Robert Redford in Butch Cassidy
and then:
Richard Gere in American Gigolo
and then:
Dennis Quaid. I liked him first in Breaking Away; this picture is from the Big Easy
(http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h243/lnicoll/wk-vid-BIG-EASY.jpg)
and then:
Judd Nelson in the Breakfast Club. Someone else mentioned Rob Lowe. I liked all those teenage stars.
How about Aidan Quinn? First in Reckless, then in Desperately Seeking Susan...
and then:
Paul Mercurio in Strictly Ballroom
For the past year, these are the men who have been keeping me awake at night...sigh....and I'm not a teenager anymore! LOL

Hey Leslie! Better late than never!
I first saw Hugh 'Swoon' Jackman in 'Paperback Writer' and my jaw hit the floor and stayed there til the credits rolled. :o

Flattery, eh? I ain't no shiny metrosexual about to get distracted by no mirror while you beat me to the chase. Nice try, though.

while you two have been bickering I have stolen Jake from the castle in the isle of white and have dragged him back up to Scotland.

Cobblers - meet me round the back of the 7-11. Wear dark glasses and a hat. I'll bring the chloroform, you get the sack. Together, we'll work out a rota for him - this is one's getting out of hand.

Dunno who she stole, but it weren't no Jake. He's still in the cellar bitchin' about having to eat beans... ;)

I used to dream some of Scott Baio
(http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j120/nataligv_2006/scottbaio.jpg)
Then, Rob Lowe boyish looks grabbed my attention...
But after watching Running on Empty, I developed a major crush on River Phoenix (RIP :( )
Which led to a short but intense crush on Keanu Reeves
(http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j120/nataligv_2006/hardball2.jpg)
Now, these two men take my breath away:
Eric Bana *sighs*
(http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j120/nataligv_2006/manip027.jpg)
And Mr. Chest himself, Hugh Jackman *sighs*

I don't have pics for mine (and no time to trawl right now) but I did have adolescent crushes on:
Michael Praed (from Robin of Sherwood) - used to race home from my Saturday job to watch it. Alone in my room. Refusing to be distracted.
Larry Mullen Jnr
Oh, and David Soul (apparently) ???
As for now, that I'm all grown up and mature and stuff - well there are just to many to name.
Us women in our 30s eh? ;)
Karen

Thanks for the reminder, Natali....
Keanu Reeves in Speed:

He was also so cute (and such a goof) in Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure:

Barb, AT LAST another KB in Footloose fan! What that boy did to my 16 year old hormones... :P
Ooooo, and I dig your Ralph Fiennes crush too. Did you see him in 'The Constant Gardener'? He was wonderful, and should've got an Oscar nom IMHO >:(
Oh, honey, I've seen him in *everything*. Even really obscure stuff like "Spider" and "Onegin." Seen him in a couple plays, too. And met him (as I've gone on ad nauseum here about before)! ;D Right up there in easily the top three days of my life, and I've the photo to prove it (which I also apparently never grow tired of posting):
"The English Patient" was just the one where my admiration for him turned from sheer respect in his acting talent to pure animal lust. Or, I should say - pure animal lust was added to my sheer respect in his acting talent, since that's never changed.
Have you seen him in "Emily Bronte's 'Wuthering Heights'" with Juliette Binoche? YEOW! The first time I saw when he first opens the door to the house when his prospective tenant knocks in the middle of a storm - I about fell off my chair. I actually rented that after seeing TEP, although he was in it before being in Schindler's List.
He did a lovely interview on "Inside the Actors Studio" with James Lipton back in January or February. I know I'm biased, but it was by far the best interview of him I've ever seen and I think the best IAS I've ever seen.
Now, if he'd just have Heath and Jake on. I waited ten years for him to have Rafe on - I really don't want to wait another 10 more for those two.

anybody remember "Riptide"?
the opening sequence always had Joe Penny and Perry King running out of their boat in tighty whities. yum. wish I could find a pic of that.

OMG, Ralph Fiennes!! I still feel like a teenager about him! He is a fiend: I loved him in "Schindler's list"... I mean come on, that guy made me lust after ahorrid nazi ! I am not sure I would have resisted if I'd met him in person in the 40's, he a horrid nazi, I an activist in the French resistance... Ok, maybe :-\
-
Well, hell... Look at him...
I remember seeing that in the theater and looking for his name in the credits afterwards because I'd not seen him in anything up to that point. I didn't exactly lust over him at that time but just was fascinated with him. I thought, "Jesus. Who the hell was THAT guy???"
Then I saw this one and practically left clawmarks on the armrests all those times it seemed as if he were coming right through the screen at me. I kept hoping for a "Purple Rose of Cairo" moment, but it never materialized...

*********swoon**********
Yes, I guess when it comes down to it, I still like my men a little bit older. I make only one exception. OK. Two. But definitely no more than that.
-
Here were some folks who captured my fancy:
Malcolm McDowell as Alex in A Clockwork Orange--McDowell, a brilliant actor, brings Alex, a thoroughly despicable character, to vivid and compelling life in this Stanley Kubrick classic. In spite of Alex's violent anti-social mentality, this withdrawn and awkward teenage boy was captivated by the character's lack of conformity, high level of intelligence, and cultural sophistication.
Tim Curry as Frank-N-Furter in The Rocky Horror Picture Show--dynamic androgynous eroticism to the nth degree! A teenage boy coming to terms with his homosexuality finds scintillating dream fulfillment in the life force that is Curry in this role.
Mike Ranger--adult film star, first encountered by me when furtively exploring my father's collection of pornographic magazines. Mike was a very handsome and appealing fellow, with a beautiful clear complexion and a fine head of auburn hair. This boy's budding recognition of an erotic attraction for feet found confirmation in some splendid shots of Mike's manly and strong appendages.
Now how's that for not being shy? ;) May add more later as they come to me.

YES! Me! Have quite a few of their episodes somewhere on a tape. I liked them a lot and I've just seen that the first season came out on DVD in the States, just a few months ago! Loved the good chemistry between the actors (especially the sensitivity of Nick and the sort of 'big-brother' attitude of Cody). I usually don't like watching dubbed series/movies, but at the time my English was no good, so I watched the German version (or French) and I did like their voices (same for Starsky and Hutch). I have just read that the guy who did Joe Penny's voice killed himself in 1990 (apparently because he was suffering from an AIDS-related illness). For "Jake and the Fatman" they had then to find another 'voice'. That man died this year of a brain tumor.. Very tragic. I always found Nick Ryder to be very 'sad', but I was kind of attracted to that. There are several very good episodes and I like the one a lot where Perry King directs - I forget the title of the episode. He only appears at the beginning and at the end(?). It's about a very small rural town somewhere, after a gay man has been killed. I think it's his sister who hires the trio. By the way, the German title of the show is "Trio mit 4 Fäusten" -> "Trio with 4 fists"..

I totally agree. I first saw CO about 5 years ago and couldn't take my eyes off McDowell (except for the bit where they clamp his eyes open. Euewwwwww... eye things freak me out :-\). I've only seen him in a couple of other things - the film 'If' - which is excellent, and the Brit TV series 'Our Friends in the North' - brilliant, brilliant television, the like of which is no longer seen on the increasingly ratings-driven BBC. He was fabulous in both, and like Ralph Fiennes he leaps out of the screen at you.

I saw Alan Rickman about two years ago down in Puerta del Sol in Madrid, and he is quite ugly in person. I'm not sure if it was the whole outfit he was wearing and the silly glasses but it seemed to me that he needs tons of make up to look good, really.

Well, let's see.
I was 14 years old during the summer of 1972, during the Munich Olympics. That would definitely make Mark Spitz a teenage crush. And I still have a thing for men with mustaches. ;D
I can also count Robert Redford as the Sundance Kid, which reminds me, for those of you, like me, old enough to remember tobacco advertising on U.S. television--remember the guy from the Winchester "little cigar" commercials, who looked like Robert Redford as the Sundance Kid?
Oh, yeah, not a teenage crush, but--those of you who like Ralph Fiennes are welcome to him--as long as I get his brother Joe. ;D

Alexandre Despatie. ;)
Dot-matrix posted more pictures of him over on "Anything Goes" in the "Hot Hotesty Hotties"--or whatever--thread.
As for divers, you might add Greg Louganis to my list, though I was out of my teens by the time he was at the height of his career.

Thanks, Leslie and Dot!
That picture of Mark Spitz (see Leslie's post, above) is one I have not seen before. The picture you usually see is, I think, the one from his poster where he's wearing the "Stars and Stripes" Speedo from the Olympics. That blue suit appears to be an Adidas.
God, I thought that suit Louganis and the others wore at the Seoul Olympics (see Dot-matrix's post) was an ugly design! ;D
(Hey, I like divers, so of course I have definite--you could say "firm" ;D--opinions about men's bikinis! ;D )
Thanks to e-Bay, I have framed 8 x 10's of Mark and Greg hanging in my bathroom, right over the toilet, so I can look at them whenever I--oh, never mind! :o ;D

You have to check out Alan Rickman in Sense and Sensibility, for his voice as much as his body. Also, let me second the nomination of Malcolm--what was your favorite Malcolm movie? I suppose it had to be Clockwork Orange, but I would vote for O Lucky Man myself. And he's still very sexy--if only he wouldn't play bad guys all the time!!
-
I love Alan Rickman. Not because he's gorgeous, but because he's such a great actor. He can be funny (Galaxy Quest), romantic (Truly, Madly, Deeply), or sadistic (Closetland). I loved his understated performance in Sense and Sensibility.
I never had a crush on Malcom, but did really love the movie, Time After Time. Malcom and Mary Steenburgen met on the set. They married but then later divorced. Actually in Time After Time, I liked the villian, David Warner. I had seen him in Morgan and loved that movie, too.

Speaking of Malcolm, I just watched the movie The Company last nite. I felt like I hit the jackpot--Malcolm McDowell as a good guy, a Robert Altman movie, and spectacular dance scenes!!

Morgan? You remember that movie? Ohmigod!
I saw that movie over Thanksgiving break back in...1968? 1969? I was visiting a friend in NJ for Thanksgiving. First time I did not have Thanksgiving at home with my own family. I would have been 13 or 14. Anyway, Morgan came on the TV and my friend Cathy and I were transfixed! I can even remember the song, "Morgan is sad today, sadder than yesterday..."

Ok, I'll confess: Peter Maffay (Anke, don't you dare to laugh! ;)). He is a singer, guess he'd describe himself as a rockstar. When I was a teenager, I thought he's cool. I was really, really young then...

Here's another honest-to-goodness teenage crush: who remembers Rex Smith? "You Take My Breath Away" and "Pirates of Penzance"

I obviously cut my teeth on cowboys,

I'm so with you here, Leslie. Let's share them fair: you can have Newman, I take Redford.
I think The Horse Whisperer is not a good movie, but Redford looks great in it. Add Kristin Scott Thomas (god, beautiful woman!), the horses and the landscape, and I'll watch it two or three times.
More teenage crushes:
Kevin Bacon

Matt Dillon:

Jodie Foster (freckles, here I go again, I'm all into freckles :))

And River Phoenix (hi Natali, I saw you had River on you list, too):

Apart from Peter Maffay (the guy in my earlier post; can't stand him anymore), I still think they're all beautiful and like them somehow. I'm pretty constant ;)
I'm not a teenager anymore (he he, far from it). But, err, well, here I go:

I called Redford first, although I have to say, I think Paul Newman has aged better than RR!

Jon Voight! His role is Deliverance occured at a pivotal point in my development. I still think he's hot, even if he plays FDR these days.
-
And his co-star in Deliverance: Burt Reynolds. Here was a man who about 1980 told Barbara Walters on broadcast TV that some of of her crew was so good looking he could be bisexual with them. I like to have fell out.
In college I knew this girl who had his Cosmo centerfold on her door and late one nite it disappeared.....

Not exactly a teenage crush, but my Mum openly drools at Christopher Walken in 'The Deer Hunter'...

This was my Dad's crush when he was in his early 20s - Gene Tierney...

All my teenage crushes have been mentioned - the usual Sean Cassidy, Parker Stevenson, Scott Baio...did anyone say Robert Urich? I had it bad for him in "Spenser for Hire"? Probably because he was a tough guy with a sensitive poetic center...
Luckily you're never too old for crushes, and this man does it for me EVERY time.

Speaking of rock stars, anyone remember the show Hullaballoo? I remember watching it (probably circa 1965) and the Rolling Stones were on. Mick Jagger was so...something. I was alternately attracted and repelled. He was such a bad boy, compared to the goody-goodness of the Beatles (I liked the Beatles music but was never into the screaming, fainting fan thing).
This is Mick from 1970...

How did I live without the Internet? Huh, how did I? LOL
Hullaballoo, Nov 15, 1965 (damn, my memory is good!)
1) Barry McGuire (host) – "The Lonesome Road" (or "Look Down That Lonesome Road")
2) The Kingsmen – "Louie, Louie" (abridged) and "Money"
3) Brenda Lee, Brenda McNair and Barry McGuire – "Gotta Get A Goin'"
4) Barbara McNair – "You're Gonna Love My Baby"
5) Brenda Lee – "Yesterday's Gone"
6) Brenda Lee, Brenda McNair and Barry McGuire – "Gotta Get A Goin'" (reprise)
7) Rolling Stones film footage (instrumental version of "Satisfaction")
8) The Rolling Stones – "She Said Yeah" and "Get Off Of My Cloud" (live vocals with pre-recorded backing music).
9) Barry McGuire – "This Precious Time"
I remember them singing "Get Off Of My Cloud." And after boring acts like 1-6, no wonder I was about to pee in my pants over Mick Jagger!

I was just in the shower thinking about Mick Jagger and Hullabaloo and I suddenly realized, no one had mentioned Illya Kuriakin! Illya...we all had major crushes on him. For those who are too young to remember, I am taking about David McCalllum as Illya in the Man From U.N.C.L.E.

John Phillip Law plays the part of a young Russian Submarinier who goes ashore and meets Carl Reiners family.

Now you need to find a photo of him as Dr. Mallard, aka "Ducky," in N.C.I.S., where he works with that other hottie of my younger years, Mark Harmon--who still looks pretty damn good!

Mick Jagger was so...something. I was alternately attracted and repelled.
Mick was brimming with sexual charisma. Tim Curry's Frank-N-Furter owed much to Jagger's example.
And speaking of attracted and repelled, that pretty aptly sums up my impression of Shane MacGowan, former lead singer of the Pogues. I'm not proud to admit that a person's appearance can repel me, but I could barely bear to look at him when a first cousin of mine introduced me to the music of the Pogues. But I liked the music, kept getting exposed to Shane's image, and over time, realized I had actually developed a crush on the guy! Not an adolescent crush, but a crush nonetheless. Shane introduced me to the bewildering and unexpected allure of teeth that only a mother could (or should) love! :P

Shayne McGowan brought much of his appearance on himself - his alchoholism which he seems to have refused to get under control has really made his looks, teeth, skin deteriorate. I have never seen o read an interview when hes not been drunk or high on something.
But a great singer and songwriter... and a really interesting character.
Just reading his wikipedia page there. Did you know that in 1976 at a Clash concert his earlobe was bitten off by a girl he had previously been kissing. A photographer snapped a picture of him covered in blood and it made the papers, with the headline "Cannibalism At Clash Gig", turning him into a local punk legend?!
Some quotes from him:
"People are talking about immigration, emigration and the rest of the fucking thing. It’s all fucking crap. We’re all human beings, we’re all mammals, we’re all rocks, plants, rivers. Fucking borders are just such a pain in the fucking arse."
"The British press have been giving me six months to live for the past twenty years - they must be getting pissed off interviewing me by now."
"I'm just following the Irish tradition of songwriting, the Irish way of life, the human way of life. Cram as much pleasure into life, and rail against the pain you have to suffer as a result. Or scream and rant with the pain, and wait for it to be taken away with beautiful pleasure."
"The most important thing to remember about drunks is that drunks are far more intelligent than non-drunks. They spend a lot of time talking in pubs, unlike workaholics who concentrate on their careers and ambitions, who never develop their higher spiritual values, who never explore the insides of their head like a drunk does."
-

Yes, the man seems to be a chronic alcoholic. It's really tragic, and amazing that he's hung onto life for as long as he has.
Absolutely unique singer and songwriter, though...which may go hand in hand with his chemical abuse; his girlfriend stated in interview once that she couldn't imagine what Shane's personality would even be like without the booze that has helped shape it.
-
oops I modified my post (by adding to it) while you were posting.
Yes - he is a very interesting character - would love to be a fly on a wall to hear him nattering away in a pub somewhere. I now have Fairytale of New York firmly stuck in my head - I looovvvve that song.

Ah, another late night TV run movie that me and my sister caught when we were little kids. We taped it because we thought it was so funny - another one of those wacky big cast comedies that were so popular in the 60's. Of course, we never saw them in the theaters or even remembered when they first came out or even knew the actors, but we just thought they were really funny. We also remember the Alan Arkin 'E-mer-gen-cy..." line and the difficulty had by Russian sailors trying to pronounce Gloucester "Glock-ee-ster". I also thought John Phillip Law was cute but didn't know who he was.

I remember first noticing guys with Charleston Heston in Planet of the Apes. It was on tv (1976) and he stays bare-chested quite a bit. THe scene where they disrobe him and you see his buttocks was edited out of tv. Suprised when I rented it in the early 1980's and he was naked, back side. Can't say I ever had a crush on Charleston Heston.
I was also exposed to the DUKES OF HAZARD :-\ ( I grew up in Bubba country) and thought John Schneider was pretty hot. I HATED THE SHOW. He had a comeback in SMALLVILLE as Pa Kent. His character got killed off last season from a heart
attack. :( He's aged pretty well.

Wasn't the guy with the angel wings in Barbarella named Duran Duran? That's where I read the band got their name - from Barbarella.
The angel's name was actually Pygar. Duran Duran (alternatively spelled, for the film character, Durand Durand) was the villainous scientist being sought by Barbarella. It's true, though, that the musical band got its name from this character.

I didn't really have any celebrity teenage crushes that I remember. I didn't start longing for people I didn't know until I started watching porno and was able to see to very attractive men naked. Fitness is important to me. ;)
I discovered my ideal man when I saw The Little Foxes (1941 William Wyler movie starring Bette Davis). David Hewett, played by Richard Carlson, pictured here with Theresa Wright. Carlson didn't keep his good looks for long, but it was really David who was the attraction. Rent the movie, you'll see what I mean.

Whoops. Just remembered a couple.
Patrick Duffy in Man from Atlantis and Steve Guttenburg whenever he had the good sense to take his shirt off.
Hey! Did you know that from 1980-1990, Guttenburg filmed more movies than any other actor in the SAG except Gene Hackman? I found that out while looking for pictures.

My first real crush,
David Soul of Starsky and Hutch.
I loved him and the show and I thought about them all the time and I made up new stories about them.
I always loved the sad episodes the best, when they ended up in each others arms. (sounds familiar, doesn't it)
And I was twelve ::)
BTW Just in case you are too young, ;D David Soul is the blond one, Hutch, and I still think he's cute ;D

Just came across this whilst idly googling... I think they've all been mentioned at one time on the thread! ;D

And just for you marlb, here a pic of pre-Hutch David Soul in 'Here Come the Brides' 1968-70

Tell you what, I never watched Starsky and Hutch when I was a kid, yet I was still somehow offended when the movie, apparently, turned the show into a farce.
Paul Michael Glaser was more my type. Such a tragedy about his wife, Elizabeth, and their child.
(Edit. OK, I took out my smiley face after the comment about Paul Michael Glaser being more my type. It started to look insensitive right before the comment about what a tragedy it was for him to lose his both his wife, Elizabeth, and their child to AIDS.)

True Jeff. Can't imagine what it must have been like to lose your wife and child to such a cruel disease :'(

OK, I must be having an elder moment here. I have very fond memories of Here Come the Brides. Jesus H., if you get me drunk enough, I can still sing the theme song, and that's almost 40 years ago! :o But I have absolutely no recollection of who that is in the photo standing between David Soul, on the left, and Robert Browne. (Bobby Sherman was my favorite Bolt brother. ;D )

Thanks for the great picture. He was so cute!!! I even still have his record someplace, remember 'Don't Give Up On Us, Baby" I think it was.
I would never ever see the movie, to me it is real blasphemy, Starsky and Hutch was a serious show (especially in your early teens) , the friendship, losing girlfriends, terrible car accidents, even drug addiction. It did bother me that they chose to parody it in the movie.
Yes, Paul Micheal Glaser did have a very sad life, to lose his wife and daughter, but Elizabeth Glaser certainly did so much good in her time. I think he is doing well, he did get remarried not too long ago and he even appears on tv every so often. He was in a not awful USA network movie about a year ago, and I think I saw him in a commercial recently.
David Soul did disappear, but I think he does do stage acting in London, or he did.

I did so love that show. ;D
-
Okay now that I got started,
Around the time of Starsky & Hutch, my next true love was David Gates of Bread. I loved their songs, they were so beautiful, and I so thought he was cute, but there weren't many pictures back them. I must have seemed so dorky, everyone was into Led Zeppelin, and I loved Bread. They got back together in 1976 when I fell in love with them, and they were playing in the city but I wasn't allowed to go :( :( :(

He sure looks like he should be in BBM here.

I remember all my girlfriends at school loved S&H. It was Saturday night TV when I was a kid and we'd all talk about it at school on Monday. I used to love Huggy Bear, but you had to be either a Hutchian or a Starskyite in our gang (I was a Hutchian ;D) and swear your allegiance to the show. One of my friends was such a huge fan of PMG that one of her O level art pieces was a homage to the show!! ::)
And you mentioned two of my favourite bands Marlb!! :D My sister is 12 years older than me (I was born in 68) and had eclectic taste in music, so I grew up with Led Zep, Bread, Deep Purple, Mike Oldfield, Hendrix, Queen, all sorts playing on the stereo. My love of that era's music comes from her. My fave Bread track is 'Sweet Surrender' very closely followed by 'Guitar Man' :D
-
Hi,
Wow it is so great to have so much in common with people around here ;D ;D ;D
Yes, Starsky and Hutch was big then, although the girls in my school were into Happy Days and Mork and Mindy at the time. I hated those shows, I loved S and H.
But yes people were devoted to one or the other, kinds like J And E. I loved Hutch, I especially loved the really sad dramatic episodes.
I was also a little young for Bread, (I'm five years older than you), They were big in 70-73 and then they broke up and I started liking them around 76 but they did get together again them. I still think their songs are beautiful but I haven't really listened to them in a long time. My favorite was "If" by far but they had a lot of wonderful songs.
BTW my favorite song from around then, 'Shannon', by Henry Gross, just thought of it. I listened to that over and over when I wasn't listening to Bread

Is it true that if you are blond you have crushes on dark handsome guys and if you are dark you go for blonds?
-
Hi,
I don't know, for me i don't think so. I have never been blond (since I was about 5), usually a medium brown, but I end up liking the blonds, (Hutch, Ennis/Heath). But I usually am an exception to the rules. ::) ::) ::)
-

Hi Jeff, I also loved Here Come the Brides, can also still sing the theme song, drunk or sober (I used to like playing it on the piano!) and can't identify that other guy in the picture, either.
I remember a character called Big Swede, but that's not him (obviously). And then there was their nemesis Aaron Stemple, but that's not him, either. As for my favorite Bolt Bro, it was Jeremy also (though frankly Jason was more interesting).
-
Is it true that if you are blond you have crushes on dark handsome guys and if you are dark you go for blonds?
Well, when I still had hair on top and it wasn't gray ::) , my hair was basically a mousy light brown, and I've always been turned on by men with "Mediterranean" looks.
On the other hand, I tend to fall in love with men with basically the same sort of Northern European--but not Scandinavian--looks, as myself.
-

Well, I may have told a lie. I discovered in the shower last night that I don't remember all the lyrics to the theme song--although I wasn't drunk in the shower last night. ;D
Remember, Bobby Sherman released a record of a version of Seattle, the theme song?
I remember a character called Big Swede, but that's not him (obviously). And then there was their nemesis Aaron Stemple, but that's not him, either. As for my favorite Bolt Bro, it was Jeremy also (though frankly Jason was more interesting).
Big Swede was played by Bo Svenson, and Aaron Stemple, who owned the lumber mill, whereas the Bolt brothers owned Bridal Veil Mountain, with the timber, was played by Mark Leonard.
Holy crap, I remember entirely too much about that show.
Not to mention that apparently it was based on historical reality. Back in my genealogy days, I once came across a book (details unfortunately now forgotten) about some guy who had taken one or more shiploads of eligible young ladies from New England to the Pacific Northwest in, I think, the 1870s.
-
I didn't have a crush on these gentlemen as a teenager, but an old 1942 movie called Flying Tigers just ended on TCM, and I must say that John Wayne and John Carroll were quite the lookers! :D
So much male pulchritude, everywhere one looks.
-

Jeff, here's something you can laminate and take into the shower with you next time.
The bluest sky you've ever seen, in Seattle.
And the hills the greenest green, in Seattle.
Like a beautiful child
Growing up, free and wild.
Full of hopes and full of fears,
Full of laughter, full of tears,
Full of dreams to last a year
In Seattle.
When you find your own true love, you will know it
By his smile, by the look in his eyes.
Some set pine trees in the air
Or some stand around and stare
Look out everyone, Here Come the Brides.
I remembered them pretty closely, but I double checked with several lyrics websites. I never quite believed they said, "some stand around and stare," but apparently they did.
Some more fascinating info: The song was written by a Tin Pan Alley duo who also wrote the theme songs for "Bewitched," "Gidget" and several others. And it was recorded by Perry Como!
Not to mention that apparently it was based on historical reality. Back in my genealogy days, I once came across a book (details unfortunately now forgotten) about some guy who had taken one or more shiploads of eligible young ladies from New England to the Pacific Northwest in, I think, the 1870s.
Another site says the show "was loosely based upon the Mercer Girls, Asa Mercer's efforts to bring civilization to old Seattle by importing marriageable women from the war-ravaged East Coast of the United States in the 1860s."
This I can believe. The premise is too absurd to have been made up.
UPDATE more info on Asa Mercer, from Wikipedia: The young town of Seattle was attracting hordes of men to work in the timber and fishing industries, but few marriageable women were willing to make the trip to the remote Northwest corner of the United States. In 1864, with public support and private funding, Mercer traveled to the Eastern United States in search of single women to work in Seattle as teachers and in other respectable occupations. This trip, and a subsequent trip in 1866, introduced hundreds of women to the Pacific Northwest, most of whom eventually married local men. The descendants of the Mercer Girls still represent a significant portion of Seattle's citizenry. The Mercer Girls story formed the basis of the television show Here Come the Brides.
BTW, Asa Mercer does not look much like Jason Bolt.
BTW, did you know the show only ran two seasons? 1968 to 1970.
There's probably waaaaaayyyy more than anyone under 45 or so wants to know about a TV show they've never heard of!
-
Oh, my gosh, Katherine, you sure did your homework on a Sunday! :o ;D
Asa Mercer. That was it! That was what I remembered from my genealogy days.
As for the theme song, believe it or not, it was "Like a beautiful child, growing up free and wild" that escaped my memory. The rest of the first verse I remembered.
While I don't question your research, I'm not always prepared to trust lyric web sites implicitly.
"Some set pine trees in the air" makes no sense to me. My memory--which we've established is not always reliable ;D--is that the line should be "Scent of pine trees in the air." But then maybe all those years ago my ears just heard what made sense to my mind, if you follow me. :-\
In any case, my memory of those two lines is:
Scent of pine trees in the air
Don't just stand around and stare
The "stand around and stare" doesn't give me a memory problem, but I don't have complete confidence in the "Don't just" part.
Oh, yeah, my memory also gives that next-to-last line of the first stanza as:
"Full of dreams to last the years"
But, again, maybe the ears heard what made sense to the mind.
Anyway, thanks for digging this up, and the information about the Mercer Girls. Props to you for your investigative skills! :D

As a teenager I had two, Catherine Deneuve and John Travolta.
Used to have this really cool fantasy about the 3 of us getting it on in the back of a pickup truck in some isolated area <g>

Ditto, Elle! Especially George and Pete. One summer a house down the street went up for sale and I dreamed of George Harrison moving into it. Do you suppose he ever went house-hunting in suburban Minneapolis? And if so, might he be interested in an early 1960s rambler?
I was going to mention Pete from the Mod Squad a while back. Julie, too -- though in her case it was less a crush than I just wanted to BE her. Or at least, have her hair.

See, that's what I noticed last night as I was poking around the internet, looking at lists of 1969-1974 TV shows, trying to jog my memory. Most of the ones I found, when I first thought about posting them, I then realized it wasn't really a crush, it was a "want to be" them. Or kind of mixed together. Crush/be them, or know them.
Though Chad Everett, as Doctor Joe Gannon on Medical Center - I didn't want to BE him, that WAS pre-teen lust. I haven't found a good picture of him yet, that represents my mind's eye of him.
-
Chad Everett today, even handsomer than he was in the early 1970s

The Courtship of Eddie's Father, both of them
(http://www.mortystv.com/showcards/courtship_of_eddie.jpg)

It was on Saturday nights, with Bob Newhart, and Mary Tyler Moore, I believe. :)

And when I got a little older, I realized that Harry Nilsson did the song and music for it:
Best Friend
People let me tell you 'bout my best friend,
He's a warm hearted person who'll love me til the end.
People let me tell you 'bout my best friend,
He's a one boy cuddly toy, my up, my down, my pride and joy.
People let me tell you 'bout him he's so much fun
Whether we're talkin' man to man or whether we're talking son to son.
Cause he's my best friend.
Yes he's my best friend.
Ba da! Buh duh duh, duh duh DUH!

I remember this and I loved it, but I wasn't really allowed to watch it because it "wasn't for kids". But I did.
Wow! It's hard to believe that anything from those days could have been considered not for kids. Nowadays there are shows I can barely stand to watch with my sons, though they are good shows and in some cases are broadcast as early as 7 p.m.! I look back on my own childhood TV as this idyllic era -- in this respect, anyway -- when parents had nothing to worry about in terms of "adult content."
-
Your so right, but back then, compared to "The Brady Bunch" and "the Partridge Family", the "Courtship of Eddie's Father" was really grown up.
Another show that I loved, that was real serious actually for a kid's show, "Family Affair"
Thats one that I really want to see again, and see how different it is from how I remember it.
-

I was thinking about Family Affair too, as I've been strolling down memory lane. Buffy, Jody, and Cissy's parents had just died, right? From Terre Haute, Indiana. (The weird things I remember.) "Mr. French, Mr. French!" "Hi, Uncoo Bee-ew!" And Anissa (I forget her last name, who played Buffy) died of a drug overdose. That was a shock. I didn't even know what that meant, back then.
Oh, and Mrs. Beasley.
:)
-
I remember liking it as a kid, but saw it again quite some time ago and was nauseated....
-
Yes, exactly. I was a little young, but I saw some in repeats. I do remember many of them were really really sad for a comedy show.
Yes, Buffy was Anissa Jones, and I think she had a real messed up life, and she died of an overdose at around 18.
Jody and Cissy are still alive I believe but I think Jody, had a real strange life, and I think he became really religious and he used to show up on tv.
I would really like to see it, but I don't know if it is on dvd.
Yes, they were from Indiana, but they moved in with Uncle Bill in his fabulous NYC apartment when there parents died.
-
I remember liking it as a kid, but saw it again quite some time ago and was nauseated....
Why?
-
When I used to watch it as a kid, my dad found it nauseating. I didn't get why then. And admittedly I haven't seen it lately, but now, looking back ... I think my dad was right.
;D
-
I think your dad was Right!
;D
absolutely nauseating!!!
So was the PARTRIDGE FAMILY
What else is/was nauseating....hmmmm.
Ah, THE MONKEYS.
SANFORD AND SON
HAPPY DAYS
a few others
-
The Partridge Family was truly nauseating. I even thought so then.
But the clothes are sure fun and funny to see now.
-
omg the ABSOLUTE ROCK BOTTOM worse ON TV!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Brady Bunch
barf
puke
gag
roll over, play dead.
-
Marcia, Marcia, Marcia ;D ;D ;D
-
OK, you know what's REALLY REALLY bad? Gidget. I liked that as a kid. So when my sons started watching it in reruns last summer I was all excited.
It was horrific. Especially from a feminist point of view. Gidget is spunky and ambitious and adventuresome and assertive. But time and time again, the lesson Gidget learns is that she crossed the line, she shouldn't try to do what boys do, that's not her place, she should just trust in her old reliable feminine wiles to get what she wants.
I bet even Sally Field would gag if she watched it now.
:P :P :P
-
LMAO
at least Flo Henderson had a good time lolol
-
What about that awful thing with Patty Duke???
God almighty people watched these things!!!
But i have to admit I liked The Flying Nun
-
The Partridge Family was truly nauseating. I even thought so then.

I LOVED The Partridge Family! I had all their albums.
I thought David Cassidy was to die for! He was so hot and cute. :)

My sister actually had a Mrs. Beasley doll. And I named my two childhood hamsters after the two kids; Buffy and Jody. They were Teddy Bear hamsters. :)

we forgive you

She may well have been gagging even then.
Now on the other hand, I hope these two were really proud of the work they did. I LOVED this show, and had crushes on both, especially Tyne Daly:

OK, now you're going TOO far. "A hot dog made her lose control" -- who can't sympathize with that?!

Me, it was awful awful awful, i saw one last week and could not believe I had ever been dumb enough to actually like that show. I was in the first grade, which will remain my excuse.
LOL
-

I don't know what you two are referring to. Do I want to?

Are you referring to The Parent Trap??
Here's a photo of one of my first celebrity crushes, way back in American Graffitti days:

-
I don't know what you two are referring to. Do I want to?
We're talking about The Patty Duke show. I was making an allusion to one of the lines in its theme song:
Meet Cathy, who's lived most everywhere,
From Zanzibar to Barclay Square.
But Patty's only seen the sight.
A girl can see from Brooklyn Heights --
What a crazy pair!
But they're cousins,
Identical cousins all the way.
One pair of matching bookends,
Different as night and day.
Where Cathy adores a minuet,
The Ballet Russes, and crepe suzette,
Our Patty loves to rock and roll,
A hot dog makes her lose control --
What a wild duet!
Still, they're cousins,
Identical cousins and you'll find,
They laugh alike, they walk alike,
At times they even talk alike --
You can lose your mind,
When cousins are two of a kind.
-
I used to love that song, and sang it a lot. ::) It's great to see all the words.
-
O god
is it me??
lol

Oh, I lived in New York and we had lots and lots of channels:
Channel 2 -> CBS
Channel 4 -> NBC
Channel 5 -> WNEW...lots of kids shows, including Wonderama with Sonny Fox, and the Soupy Sales show. Also old movies.
Channel 7 -> ABC
Channel 9 -> WOR (I think). More old movies on this, including the Million Dollar Movie with theme from "Gone with the Wind." The Loretta Young show was here, too.
Channel 11 -> WPIX. More kids shows. I think this is where Diver Dan was (altho he might have been on channel 5). Popeye cartoons. This was also the channel with the famous burning yule log on Christmas eve.
Channel 13 -> "educational TV." They used to show lots of movies from The National Flim Board of Canada.

That's the line up as I remember it, L. :) Though you remember more details than I do. Even though I haven't lived in NY for nigh on 30 years, I still sometimes have to think twice here in Seattle about which network is on which channel here, because I remember those so vividly.

Yes, I grew up in New York. We lived in Jackson Heights til I was 6, then moved to the suburbs of Long Island (Bayport) after my sister was born. But of course, we still got all the New York City channels.
Superman...oh how I loved Superman. It came on at 6 pm on Channel 11.

I never watched those shows, but I definitely remember go-go dancers on a show that I watched. They were young girls and they were each on platforms. It may not have been Wonderama, I thought it was, but it was definitely on a kids show that I watched. I couldn't believe those girls had the guts to dance like that in front of everyone.
-
I vaguely remember those shows too.
I especially remember watching American Bandstand with Dick Clark when I was a kid. It came on Saturdays, I think. I remember my mother was horrified and appalled at the way the kids danced and gyrated in front of the television camera. But I thought it was really cool! :D

As for Peggy Lipton, I still want to look like her, even though she's more than 10 years older than me! This photo, a couple of years old, was apparently taken when she was 59.

wow, a lot of NY'ers here! I lived abroad, a few places in the US but NY was always home base until....last year.
You can take a guy out a NY but you can't take NY out lol.
To this day--and this has been forever--I have no problem whatsoever with remote rural areas, small unsuburbanised rural cities or Midtown, but can't take the burbs or awful provincial cities like Cleveland or Atlanta or Houston!
No problem with Cheyenne or Ogalallah at all, but Fort Collins, the Northeast burbs, a big smear like SoCal??? No way in Hell.
-
Wonderama had go go dancers?
I remember the go go dancers on Shindig and Hullabaloo, but not Wonderama.
Here's a website where you can waste lots of time:

Leslie
Thanks for posting this link, L. I spent about 10 minutes on it, reading people's remembrances of actually having been on Wonderama as kids, and one girl (now woman) did write that once Bob McAllister was the host, there were child go-go dancers in cages and she got to be one once.

I didn't, either, until I saw a profile on her in TV Guide. That's when I said to myself, I feel old. ...

Well, that's why you have to look up her mom! You can say, wow, her mom's hot, and she's way older than me, ergo I must still be hot, too ...
Quincy, on the other hand, looks more average for his age (74). However, his supposed girlfriend (who, according to this blog, is 19) is more than 40 years younger than Peggy.

Thanks for posting this. I knew I remembered go go dancers who were kids and yes I remember they were in cages and they wore mini-dresses and really cool shoes. Imagine, a time when they could have child go-go dancers and get away with it. But I definitely remembered that and I even remember thinking how odd it was, when I was even probably younger than them.

And I don't remember the Bob McAllister Wonderama at all. I am definitely of the Sonny Fox era.
Anyone remember the Sandy Becker show on Saturday mornings?
L
-
L,
But I had no idea what I was remembering so you could have easily been right too that it was on another show. :)
I think there were even others too that it might have been on.
And you mentioned another thing that I remember well. The Million Dollar Movie, we always used to watch those.
But right now I can't remember any of the movies ::)

Well, thanks for that, Little Darlin', but hot and me are two things that never went together.
-
I remember Sandy Becker. (Dimly)
Do you remember the Late Show movies, and how before the commercials they would show artwork of the city, a stylized, simple-ish drawing, and as the movie went on, and the night got later, more and more of the windows in the drawing went dark? And remember the music to it, a ticking clock kind of song?

I just vaguely remember Sandy Becker, no trunks or keys.

In the name a bleedin jesus doesn't ANYBODY have a teenaged fantasy that doesn't reek of cornfed Iowa wholesomeness???
I'm completely nauseated. It CANNOT be possible that only teenaged New Yorkers had active imaginations, even Donnie Darko turned down the tv volume and mentally humped Christina Applegate.
What the hell was wrong with you all when you were teenagers?????
Don't even TRY to tell me that you had the whitebread hots for Gidget!!!!

Sorry about that Jack. But growing up here in the Midwest, I was raised on cornfed wholesomeness too. Not Iowa wholesomeness though; Indiana wholesomeness!
Hoosier corn is better. Everyone knows that! ;) :D
-
God help me David cause i don't think anybody else will.
I mean WTF, I had this imaginative bisexual fantasy about me Vinny Barberino and Catherine Deneuve in the back of a pick up truck by a lake, I had a LOT of fantasies but that one stands out for sheer creativity....
You had to think of SOMETHING in Indiana, not even in a RACE CAR????
-
Well, I can honestly say, I never fantasized about Sonny Fox or Sandy Becker. Or even Soupy Sales! LOL.
But one of the teenage crushes that I posted long long ago...

A threesome with me and those guys? Yeah, it crossed my fevered adolescent brain, more than one time. ;D

omg the ABSOLUTE ROCK BOTTOM worse ON TV!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Brady Bunch
barf
puke
gag
roll over, play dead.
I always watched The Brady Bunch for laughs--never could take it seriously. I have an acquaintance who once met Ann B. Davis, and from his report she sounded like such a gracious and kind human being. And that's what I mainly think about The Brady Bunch now--how much of a family those people actually became while making that show. The show itself is so corny, but I think there was real love and camaraderie fostered on that set...and that's a beautiful thing.
-

Here ya go, Jack, my biggest crush in high school. Does this help? He doesn't exactly reek of cornfed Iowa wholesomeness. I didn't have particularly imaginative fantasies -- just the usual -- but then, maybe that's because I grew up in the Midwest. Lately, of course, I've been fantasizing about someday snorting his ashes.

Finally!!!!!
IMAGINATION!!!!
By the way, up in Boulder Annie Proulx said she would not say anything at all because there was no actual proof but from empirical evidence she felt Butch and Sundance did more then rob banks together.

Oh, absolutely. I just re-watched the movie a few weeks ago and it would be so satisfying to see them in a tent scene here, or a cabin scene there, sans Etta.
And now the scientist in me needs to speak. Wouldn't empirical evidence be considered proof? Maybe she meant circumstantial evidence?
L
-
Yes.
Thankfully the scientist in you interacted with the douchebag in me.
The word is CIRCUMSTANTIAL.
-
;)
Ringo Starr
Davy Jones
Matt Dillon (James Arnaz)
Paul Newman and Robert Redford (after I saw them in "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid")
The Cartwright brothers (from Bonanza) My favorite changed according to the episode/situation.
Bobby Sherman (from "Here Come the Brides")
;)

And now the scientist in me needs to speak. Wouldn't empirical evidence be considered proof? Maybe she meant circumstantial evidence?
Though maybe she meant there was some empirical evidence to suggest it, just not enough to actually prove it.
-
Though maybe she meant there was some empirical evidence to suggest it, just not enough to actually prove it.
Then it is circumstantial. It cannot be empirical. As far as I am concerned
a piece of evidence that suggest something but do not actually prove it is by definition circumstantial evidence.
-

No, the two terms mean slightly different things. Circumstantial evidence isn't directly connected to the conclusion. For example, if a husband takes out big a life insurance policy on his wife, then shortly after that she is murdered, we might infer that the husband committed the crime -- circumstantial evidence -- but the two events aren't directly related. Empirical evidence is directly related to the conclusion, is scientific and measurable, but may not in and of itself be enough to support the conclusion. If a neighbor, peering through windows, says she saw the husband kill the wife, that is empirical evidence. If the wife's blood is on the husband's shirt, that is empirical evidence. But neither one in and of itself necessarily proves the husband did it. The neighbor might be mistaken, the blood might have gotten there when the husband cradled his dying wife.
Most scientific experiments are designed to be empirical. If empirical evidence were the same as proof, it would make scientists' jobs a lot easier; they'd only have to do any given experiment once. Usually an experiment only gets them a little closer to the conclusion. Take things like global warming or evolution. There's tons of empirical evidence supporting both -- enough to leave little doubt in most scientists' minds of their existence -- but it is made up of lots of little empirical observations, none of which in and of themselves proves the conclusion. And some argue the evidence still falls short of proof.
In the case of Butch and Sundance, the circumstantial evidence might be that they slept in the same tent. Empirical evidence could be somebody watching them through binoculars.
Here are some definitions from the web:
circumstantial evidence
n. Evidence not bearing directly on the fact in dispute but on various attendant circumstances from which the judge or jury might infer the occurrence of the fact in dispute. For example, from the evidence that a person was seen running away from the scene of a crime, a judge or jury may infer that the person committed the crime.
em·pir·i·cal (m-pîr-kl)
adj.
1.a. Relying on or derived from observation or experiment: empirical results that supported the hypothesis.
b. Verifiable or provable by means of observation or experiment: empirical laws.
2. Guided by practical experience and not theory, especially in medicine.

Lemme guess - going back to the original topic - your teenage crush was Einstein, har har. :) (Remember, that was just a guess - there was no empirical evidence of that.)
-
Wait a minute - that pronunciation guide has 'empirical' being pronounced with only three syllables. And yes, my teenage crush WAS Noah Webster.
:) And there IS empirkle evidence of that: me saying it.
-
Apparently whoever wrote the pronunciation guide on that entry has a strong Georgia accent. According to a symbols guide, pîr is pronounced "pier," so it's, m-pier-kl.
Judging from my argument above, I'd say my teenage crush was Perry Mason.
And can you blame me?!

I got my first crush when I was five years old: Tommy Rettig, the first kid star of the Lassie series. He was dethroned by Elvis a year later, who was followed up by the minister's son down the street (his name was Jake!), the kid across the aisle in my 3rd grade class, most of my older sister's boyfriends....

I couldn't call this a teenage crush precisely, as I first fell for this gentleman at the tender age of eleven! I went to see the film Animal House then, in 1978 (with my mother and sister, and my mother would probably walk out of a movie like this now), and from the moment I saw Bruce McGill as D-Day, my heart fell a stirring that couldn't find an exact focus in my pre-pubescent being, but was definitely tinged with erotic and romantic longing.
I don't have any pictures of Mr. McGill but here is his IMDb page:
