Title: Just walked by my son's room
Post by: vkm91941 on April 09, 2006, 06:09:39 pm
and this was playing on his stereo.  Reminded me so much of Jack and Ennis it brought tears :'( to my eyes...::sigh:: Anyone else around here old enough to remember this song by Art Garfunkle...

I bruise you
You bruise me
We both bruise so easily
Too easily to let it show
I love you, and thats all I know

And all my plans
keep falling through
All my plans they
Depend on you
Depend on you
To help them grow
I love you
And thats all I know

When the singer's gone
Let the song go on
There's a fine line between
The darkness and the dawn

They say in the darkest night
Theres a light beyond
And the ending always
Comes at last
Endings always
Come too fast
They come too fast
And they pass too slow
I love you
And thats all, its really all I know
Its all I know

Its all I know

Well, I am.

Vicky, I haven't heard or thought of that song in decades, and reading your post, I can hear that high, clear, sweet voice singing "and that's all I know--"

Sure is beautiful--

Very Ennis'n'Jack--

I don't think I know the song, but I love the lyrics. Fits very well with Ennis+Jack.

Yep, John I was sure shocked to here it come from a 16 year old...but he's really nostaligic for his Dad lately and that album was one of Stephens' favorites.  Dave says it makes him feel closer to his Dad to play his favorite music.

I remember that song...very nice.

Not to ruin the romantic moment but for some unknown reason, I have been listening to classic Led Zeppelin. Bizarre as this may sound, Heartbreakers could be sung by Jack:

"Been ten years and maybe more
since I first set eyes on you
The best years of my life gone by,
Here I am alone and blue.
Some people cry and some people die
By the wicked ways of love;
But I’ll just keep on rollin’ along
With the grace of the lord above.

It may be because Jack actually says the title of the song... but I also think that the melody is perfect for the film.

"Let It Be"
by The Beatles

When I find myself in times of trouble
Mother mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be.
And in my hour of darkness
She is standing right in front of me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be.
Let it be, let it be.
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be.

And when the broken hearted people
Living in the world agree,
There will be an answer, let it be.
For though they may be parted there is
Still a chance that they will see
There will be an answer, let it be.
Let it be, let it be. yeah
There will be an answer, let it be.

And when the night is cloudy,
There is still a light that shines on me,
Shine on until tomorrow, let it be.
I wake up to the sound of music
Mother mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be.
Let it be, let it be.
There will be an answer, let it be.
Let it be, let it be,
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be.

I know how that goes, Victoria.  Music is such a powerful trigger for memories.  I've lost people close to me but playing the music they love always keeps them nearby.  And Simon and Garfunkel had so many brilliant songs - Bridge Over Troubled Water will forever remind me of my best mate in high school, Trenton, who was killed in a car accident (right in front of my house, no less) a few days before he graduated.  And Sound of Silence was played at the funeral of one of my dad's good friends who tragically took his own life after battling depression for nearly a decade.  That opening line "hello darkness my old friend" still brings a lump to my throat.  *lump rising now actually*

That is such a beautiful song vic! but I'm kind of a throw back... I love anything Garfunkel, Paul Simon or the two together, I always listened to Simon and Garfunkel on the way home from the theatre after seeing brokeback, many of their songs remind me of ennis and jack...

I think Art Garfunkel has one of the most beautiful voices ever recorded.

Don't know why exactly, but I have Scarborough Fair on my iPod, and whenever it plays, I think of Ennis and Jack.  I guess just the melancholy sound of it triggers something or other - just that "she once was a true love of mine" is so sad - as if anyone who once was a true love ever stops being that.

My mother loved older Billy Joel stuff.  She and I used to listen to the albums The Stranger and 52nd Street from start to finish when I was in high school and I would visit her on the weekends.  She used to say that "Vienna" always made her think of me.  I still can't listen to it without crying.

Victoria,

Those lyrics are so beautiful. I did grow up listening to S & G, but I don't know that one. What is it called? If I ever get my sh*t together enough to start using my year-old Ipod, that is going on a brokeback mix I will make....

thank you for posting. It is special to find any new music to put in the soundtrack of Jack and Ennis's love.

Hi,
Roland here.
Sorry to be such a budinsky, but when it comes to facts on pop music (until 1988 anyways) I'm your BBM expert.
Art Garfunkel released  "All I Know" as his first successful hit as a solo artist in September of 1973. the song reached the top 10 and stayed on the "Billboard Top 100" for 14 weeks (a decent length of time in those days)

Next Question?  ;D

professor music :D

Just when I think I'm finding a settling place for BbM in my life and heart, something comes along to tell me I ain't over it yet.  Oddly, mebbe not, it's music that squeezes my chest and makes it difficult to breathe. Songs that remind me of those tragic boys-just takes my breath away.

:'( RouxB - I so agree with you - even now it is still hard for me to listen to the Gustavo music written for the film - it is just too sad and
reminds me so much of what happened in the film when that particular piece was playing....................
