Title: Completed Jack and Ennis Fanfic
Post by: welliwont on December 13, 2006, 12:17:11 am
In the interest of balancing the chi and to return the focus to our boys Jack and Ennis, I am starting this new thread to post my recommendations for Jack and Ennis fanfic.  All of my recs will be of Jack and Ennis Fanfic.  Lots of AU, and some Canon, also Real Deal / Filler.

All the recs on this thread will be for stories which are complete.  Exception:  If an author completes a story, but then due to overwhelming fan support adds more to the story, well there's nothin I can do about that I guess.  The rec will stay, and in some cases the links to the extra chapters will be added here too, depending on if it is a sequel, or if it is extra chapters.

rabenkoenigin, Whispering

The easiest way to access most of this fanfic is to be a member of the Dave Cullen forum.  That way you can access the thread called “Slash Links by Author”.  You have to be a member to see it.  It is in the forum called “Juicy Bits”, but for ease of use, here is the link to it:

http://davecullen.com/forum/index.php?topic=4664.msg141143#msg141143 (http://davecullen.com/forum/index.php?topic=4664.msg141143#msg141143)

I actually call it the “Latest Updates” thread in my bookmarks, because every day the moderator Mobody lists who has updated their story, and you can find just about every BBM fanfic writer in this 12-page thread.

There is also a thread called “Slash Links by Title” and here is its link:

So does it need to be something of which there is no thread yet on the ff board?

Your avatar: Is that Jake and is that red hair? Oh my God, can I just say he looks a lot better NOW?  :o

Hi everyone,

As Jane has noted, a very good resource for finding stories by author or title are the slash links threads over on davecullen.com. Maintaining a daily update like that is a lot of work and since it was already being done, we saw no need to duplicate it here.

Another good resource for finding stories by author or title is the Brokeback_Phoenix archive which can be found here:

http://community.livejournal.com/bbm_phoenix/

Reading Jane's message, it appears this thread will be a place for general recommendations of stories, which is great. If you want to get into an active (or ongoing) discussion of a particular story, may I ask that you move that discussion to the thread for that story, if one exists. If a thread doesn't exist for a particular story, please feel free to start one. The format of this board is deliberate to have threads for stories and discussion of the stories occurring on the threads.

In terms of finding story updates, authors and/or readers post them here to the individual threads. I also do a daily scan and try to post updates when I see them. Another good resource for updates is Brokebackslash (http://community.livejournal.com/brokebackslash/) and Wranglers (http://community.livejournal.com/wranglers/).

So Jane's first rec is Cabin Fever which is the story of a week at Don Wroe's cabin with lots of hot and heavy smex....hee hee hee. Three chapters are done but rumor has it that a fourth is in the works. What's next on your list, Jane?

To clarify some terminology here, "Canon" actually refers to the original story.  Fan fiction, by definition, cannot be "Canon".  From "Wikipedia":

In almost all cases, fan fiction has never considered canon, as fan fiction is usually produced by amateurs. Sometimes, however, events or characterizations portrayed in fan fiction can become so influential that they are respected in fiction written by many different authors, and may be mistaken for canonical facts by fans. This is referred to as "fanon". The use of fan fiction to fill gaps or continuity errors in canon is derisively called "fanwanking," or "fanwank". (The terms fanon and fanwank can apply to officially licensed works as well.)

Stories that change essential elements of the original story (i.e. Jack didn't die), are generally referred to as AU, and those that continue a story without changing its essential facts may be called a "continuation", and often people refer to fanwank and fanon as "Canon", in the BBM world.

However, none of it is any more "Real Deal" than any other type or story, and all of the types of stories are equally welcome and valid as fan fiction types as far as Bettermost is concerned.

In designating the "type" of fic, the most meaning information to include, i.e. as listed on Fanfic.net, Wranglers, or Brokebackslash is

Pairing  (Jack and Ennis, Jack and OC, Ed and Hank, Earl and Rich, etc.)
Rating  (PG 13, NC 17, R, etc)
Warnings  (special advisories, such as Dead Jack, Character Death, Explicit Sex, Child Abuse, etc, that readers should be aware of when they look at the information page.)
Title: Canon, Real Deal

Louise,

I would appreciate if you would .................................., for my recommendations.  If you wish to define canon there are at least 50 threads here for you to do so, and ................................
.......................................................................  If somebody needs the word canon clarified let them go look for the definition.  My posts do not need clarifying, but if they do, I will clarify them.

As for the definition of Real Deal, the same applies, we, you and I, have been around the block on this one, and for the purposes of my post on a thread that I started, the definition of Real Deal is:  Fanfic about Jack and Ennis, fanfic that fleshes out the Real story, from the movie or from the story.  Hence the word Real.

Not to be contrary, but I find it interesting that you say that considering that you have refered to your own story as "canon". At least, that's what it says in the very first post on the Ennis and Ellery thread.

I'm also a little confused as to the purpose of that post. Stories that fill in missing pieces of the original or continue the original have been called "canon" many more places than just on this thread. So I'm not sure why you are correcting only one post.

Anyway, that's just my two cents. I'm off to read Haunted. Thanks for the rec  :)

Actually, that post was made by MaineWriter, not me, and she defined what she meant - the story takes up after Annie Proulx's story ends, and uses the short story as its main baseline.  In this same article on Wiki (which I read long after I started writing my stories) I found out that stories that take place in the same setting but after the action of the canon, are called "continuations", rather than "canon."

And the purpose of the post was to give a larger fandom context to the use of terminology, because people from other fandoms who come to BBM fanfiction for the first time do tend to get greatly confused by the special use of the term "canon" that seems peculiar to the BBM fandom.

Here are three excellent short pieces by Janjo, starting with "Out":

http://storybyjanjo.livejournal.com/448.html

The first story involves Ennis' grandson, and the next two have Bobby as a main character. Ennis is not an astronaut, nightclub owner, hit man, drug dealer, short-order cook, cab driver, aluminum siding salesman, funeral home director, airline pilot or accountant; so if that isn't "canon", I don't know what is.

Hmmm....... just the other day I saw the term "Brokebacking" used in a (local language) review of a Six Feet Under DVD box set.... so yes, I suppose I could see Ennis in that role too. I'm having the most trouble seeing him as an accountant, actually... that's such a non-physical bookwormy kind of job and Ennis to me is so much defined by his physical presence, by his wanting and enjoying a job entailing physical activities as part of his job.(mind out of gutter here, please!  ;) )

Thanks for starting this rec thread, Jane.  :)

So, is this a thread for recommendations of ALL and ANY fanfics, or of only a specific type?

Hi Scott,

My original intent for this thread was to recommend Jack and Ennis Fanfic, as opposed to Ennis and OC Fanfic.  I read Ennis and OC for a while, but it just does not appeal any more, in fact it makes me sad for Jack.  I personally lean more towards Jack than I do towards Ennis, but that is the subject for another thread altogether!   ;)

So in the meantime, this thread is dedicated to Jack and Ennis fanfic, be it Canon, Real Deal, filler, or AU.  Just as long as it is Jack and Ennis.

Personally I have decided that for now I am only going to rec stories that are finished, until I run out of those, that is!   :P   I am presently waiting impatiently on at least 10 different stories to update, and it is difficult to be waiting with bated breath for each and every chapter so I am not going to inflict more of that here.

Here is my next rec:  This one is an oldie but a real goodie, I think it was written way back last spring.  It is an AU story, and rates 9 on a scale of 1 to 10.  It has this one really romantical moment that I have gone back and read over and over a few times,  ;) !

Jenny, Big Boots Of Pain

http://www.squashduck.com/ltd/bbm/fiction_index.htm (http://www.squashduck.com/ltd/bbm/fiction_index.htm)

and since many people may have already read this one, I will make this a double-feature and give a second rec, also a very Classic BBM fanfic, written last June and July:

midwest_girl, If I Asked

http://midwest-girl.livejournal.com/294.html (http://midwest-girl.livejournal.com/294.html)

this one is also AU....  and I really liked this one, of course I saved it.....

My original intent for this thread was to recommend Jack and Ennis Fanfic, as opposed to Ennis and OC Fanfic.  I read Ennis and OC for a while, but it just does not appeal any more, in fact it makes me sad for Jack.

I'm still not sure what you're getting at - are AUs or canon stories that take place while Jack is alive the only kinds of BBM fanfics you think people should be reading, or writing? If this type of story is the "real deal" you're talking about, then are the rest... imaginary deals? Illegitimate deals? Maybe sort of literary dope deals?

If so, no good is going to come of that. Orthodoxy is to creativity what emphysema is to the human body.

I would totally like to recommend this Jack/Ennis AU!AU  GOING HOME, by one of one set in Scotland on the 23rd, 24th, 25th and 26th of December 2006  :)
I feel it's an ABSOLUTE MUST READ and the response to it has been overwhelming. It's such a perfect, sweet and beautiful Christmas fic; so carefully written and her lovely and descriptive writing is such a joy to read  :) I HIGHLY recommend it! I loved it so much and was very, very sorry to see it end.

LOL no worries Roux! JBLaY is my first priority (well, after getting the next chapter of Hope out... am I really thinking about a third fic??) I wouldn't let you down, hon  :-* I actually spent most of today at work thinking where the next chapter will go!

And it won't exactly be Ennis as David, it will be Ennis as Ennis, just in a similar situation as David... does that make sense? maybe not... I guess you'll just have to read the first chapter and find out  ;)

AU!AU and AU/AU both mean Alternative universe!Alternative Universe! Basically meaning, not only is the ending changed (Jack and Ennis get that sweet life) but the two main characters are placed in a completely different setting all together, in modern times or Jack as a criminal Ennis as FBI agent, etc. If anyone wants to elaborate, feel free!

Hope that helps Elle  :-*

Hello Friend Leslie, thanks for this additional link to haunted_by_bbm's story, yes indeedy, she is continuing to flesh out the story!   :D   I just love reading more of Summer of '63, and this also falls into my own personal favourite category:  Real Deal.

Marge-not to put words in her mouth but I think Janie is just putting out some suggested reading for those who are fond of E/J fic. I don't think she is trying to make any type of implication as to what people "should" read or write.

Marge Innavera:  I started this thread to share titles of Jack and Ennis fanfic, the titles of the Jack and Ennis fanfic that I liked best.  If anyone likes the same kind of fanfic as I, then my recs will be like gold, IMO.  Whomever does not have an affinity for Jack and Ennis fanfic, oh well.....

Hi Marge, sorry for taking so long to get back to you.  Just to clarify, I do not feel the need to try and dictate what kinds of BBM fanfic other people read, whatever floats their boat.  I do have an opinion about the different kinds of BBM fanfic and RPS fanfic, but that is not the purpose of this thread.

The only purpose of this thread it to promote Jack and Ennis fanfic, any fanfic as long as it is Jack and Ennis.  AU, Canon, filler, Real Deal, it don't matter.  As long as it is about Jack and Ennis.  However if other posters want to post other stuff here, well I guess there's nothin I can do about that....

Just to clarify, Real Deal is a description that I created, to define the fanfic that is filler story.  Stuff written to flesh out the story.  Like Belgianboy writes, like haunted_by_BBM writes, I know that there are others....  Whomever writes about the FNIT, SNIT, the Reunion, you know, that kind of stuff.  That is what I classify as Real Deal.

Marge, I niver ever knew about you as a writer before now.  But now that I do, I will check out your stuff soon.  So in a nutshell, this thread is not meant to censor anything....  but the thread itself is devoted to Jack and Ennis fanfic.

Awright, I'll spill it, it's the part about the photo of the two boys.  I thought that little story, and the just trying to visualize the photo is very romantic and lovely.  So nice of their friend to send them that little surprise picture!   :-*  I have kept my eye open for two shots of Jack and Ennis to photoshop together, but the two I have don't really work, at least not that I can visualize.  Jack is in the right pose, but his expression is all wrong, and Ennis' expression doesn't really match either.  I dunno, maybe it's just me, what do you think?

Title: Re: Jack and Ennis Fanfic
Post by: Brown Eyes on January 02, 2007, 01:28:57 am
Hi Jane,
Well the way I picture it, Jack is seated behind Ennis... maybe Jack is on a log and Ennis is sitting with his back to him between his legs and Jack is sort of leaning forward and around to kiss his cheek. I don't know why I see it that way (maybe I'll have to go re-read that part of the story).  In the two pics you have it looks like they'd be side by side.

It really is a very sweet moment.  Thanks again for the recommendation.

The author of Cabin Fever, pairofdeuces, was in the middle of writing a really long story called Lost  that seems to have staled out a while back.  It was up to chapter 17 and can be found on pairofdeuces live journal mixed in with Cabin Fever.  I was wondering if anyone knows about this story or if they've heard any rumblings about it being continued.  I got sort of hooked on it.  It's much, much different than Cabin Fever.

Of course there are the stories:

And the classic 48 Days, which is a great one for those wanting completed stories... And, for which there is now a promised sequel (or so they say).

Hey Rouxb, that's a tough one.....  ultimately it is Ennis and Jack, so you don't have to move it.....  but it hasn't been recommended yet, is this an official recommendation Rouxb?   .....Rouxb, you are gonna hafta start shouldering some of the burden of updating the OP,   :P.  (j/k)   ;)

Wow, I don't know how I didn't think to recommend this one right away.  In honor of our very own fanfic mod,  A Love Born From Steel should definitely be on the list of (very sweet) Jack and Ennis fanfics.  Also the sequel Through the Veil of Time.

I think I'm just going to post the links to the threads here on this forum about these stories.

I don't know if people have noticed yet, but I thought I'd report that:

haunted_by_BBM's  PINE CREEK (SEQUEL TO "Missing Motel Moments")

Has been updated recently.
 :D

Ah yes Amanda, I have been slacking off.  I was going to go back and add those two links to the OP, and also the links for the second story by 1 of One.  Never enought time....

Again to remind everyone, all the recs are being copied to the first post on Page One of this thread.

Wow, I don't know how I didn't think to recommend this one right away.  In honor of our very own fanfic mod,  A Love Born From Steel should definitely be on the list of (very sweet) Jack and Ennis fanfics.  Also the sequel Through the Veil of Time.

Amanda,

Thanks so much for that recommendation! I really appreciate it.

For anyone who is wondering, I do plan to update Through The Veil Of Time, very soon! Real life interfered in the form of the holidays and I fell behind. But the Christmas tree is down, the decorations put away, and I am getting back on track.

I second Amanda's rec... A Love Born From Steel was my first fan fic ever and it still brings a smile to my face to think about it... it showed me Jack and Ennis could have that sweet life  :)

No problem Bud!   :-*   A Love Born From Steel was also the very first fanfic that I read ever!  I really do think it's great (and... like I said, sweet... which is always good).

Well it is way past time for me to recommend another great Jack and Ennis fanfic.  The next one I am recommending is my personal favourite, I wish there was more from this writer, she is dam good!   :D

royandronnie, Never Enough Sleep

This is a filler story about Jack and Ennis' fishing trip on the 10th anniversary of SNIT.

Here is the next recommendation:

This is AU!AU! teenage Jack and Ennis, coming of age story, very sweet and innocent, by one of the more prolific BBM fic writers.

B73, Lake Geneva

The easiest way to access all the chapters in order is through the Dave Cullen Link here:

Has anybody started reading Camden yards? It's by debutante9 and it's the first thing I am reading from her. It has just started and It's a very interesting story. Should we make a seperate thread for it because I saw that there is already a thread for her RPS stories.

Hi Melissa!

Actually, this thread is for completed Jack and Ennis stories.  I have heard of Camden Yards, but I am not starting it yet, what is there, only like three chapters so far??  :-\   How can you stand the suspense of new stories?   :o :o

Hey Jane,

Had no idea where to post this, Leslie has made a seperate thread for the story though! You don't read ongoing stories anymore?

Hi Melissa:

Ha!  Not by a long shot!!  I read and I read and I read, but I try not to start new stories 'cause I don't like that they stop so soon.... I have several Work In Progress stories that I am reading right now.... but here is not the place to recommend them, soooo,  maybe I will see you in the chat room some time and we can swap recs?   :)

There are four chapters and as Melissa said, I started a thread for it, with links. I'll keep it updated over there.

Some good recommendations here. Many of these are among my favorite stories, so I'm hoping the ones i haven't read are equally good.
