I love the soundtrack to a little known film (at least I think it's little known) called White Squall. I also love to listen to the haunting score of the movie Sleepers...

And then there is that beautiful Brokeback Mountain soundtrack.... ;D

White Squall. Is that the movie with Jeff Bridges as the captain of a "school boat"? Sorry, I can't think of the word for it.

If this is the same movie you're talking about, the music is really beautiful.

I love the music from "St. Elmo's Fire", "Steel Magnolias", "Stand By Me", "Breaking Away", "The Rose", "Dazed and Confused" and like you Melissa, "Brokeback Mountain".  :)

Yeah, Saturday Night Fever is great Nicky!

God, and to think I used to dance to that music when I was a teenager.

Yep! I was a Disco dancer.  :P

Hi Marlb42! Yeah, "Fame" was another good one.

I'm forgetting a bunch of really good soundtracks.

Did somebody mention "Amedeus" yet? That's another good one.

Let me second the

"Out of Africa" and "The English Patient" soundtracks and two more:

"Oscar and Lucinda"
"Blue Lagoon" the Brooke Shields version (yeah, the movie was cheesy, but Basil Poledouris did some absolutely beautiful soundtracks).

My favourite soundtrack album -
and I had this on vinyl way back in the 1970s
is Bob Dylan's  music for Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid.
(Dylan acted in the movie, too.)

The soundtrack that gave us the cllassic song
"Knockin' on Heaven's Door"

Lots of guitars and Bob sounds OK too.
Now I have the CD.

I saw Breaking Away listed as a soundtrack, but I've never heard it.
Must be perfect with all that "Italian" music.
Better look that one up.

Oh Yes
Shawshank Redemption and The Motorcycle Diaries too.

I've been listening to Knockin on Heaven's Door and Lay Lady Lay nonstop on The Essential Bob Dylan for a couple of months now! What a great album, and when I told EDelMar that Bob Dylan was in a Western movie, he didn't believe me!

Bob Dylan

"Alias"
in Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid

(from 1976)

Believe it dude.

I really liked A Room With A View.

O Mio Bambino Caro sung by Kiri Te Kanawa was very romantic and moving. Perfect in a Tuscan landscap.

Ahhh, something on which we agree!  ;) Great film, great soundtrack... :D

Just thought of another one. It's not really a great soundtrack, but it has some terrific songs - Boogie Nights starring the criminally underused Mark Wahlberg.

Garden State-ran to Border's midway through watching the movie to get it.

I was just watching figure skating on TV and they did a dance to the soundtrack of the Untouchables, first the main theme and then the death theme (the part where Sean Connery gets shot and dies...) and I got goose bumps! It's such an extraordinary and beautiful soundtrack!

I don't have a top 10 or 20 as such but soundtracks that I love are:

Brokeback Mountain - of course. Just gives me goosebumps and can reduce me to tears.
Gladiator - It's just wonderful.
Last of the Mohicans - I partly hold this movie and it's soundtrack responsible for myself and my better half finally getting it together.
Cal - Small indie movie from years ago that Mark Knophler did the music for. Acoustic guitars with a celtic bent to to it. Very beautiful. If you like the BBM incidental music then give this a try.

I'm sure that there are more but these are the ones that spring to mind right now.

My choices run all over the place.

I love the Brokeback Mountain soundtrack of course!  Then there's Dirty Dancing (I'm right there with you, proud owner of the two disc set), and Six Days, Seven Nights (just love the tropical sound, especially on cold days!) although it is slightly cheesy.  I'm also a big fan of the Phantom of the Opera soundtrack - the movie and the stage show both.  Legands of the Fall also has an amazing soundtrack as well as Schindler's List although it's very haunting.  I also really enjoy the music from A Beautiful Mind.  And how can you go wrong with Chicago?  Great songs.  I also really enjoy the soundtrack to Baz Lurhman's Romeo and Juliet, there is some great stuff on there.  I like the "indy" feel of the soundtrack for 10 Things I Hate About You and I adore the music from Love Actually as well.

I'm one of those people who can hear a song on a commercial and instantly know what movie it came from.  The music just seems to stick with me long term.

A recommendation for some romantic Valentine music:

Yo-Yo Ma plays Ennio Morricone, a collection of film scores from Cinema Paradiso, The Mission, Once Upon a Time in America, The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, The Untouchables and more.

I've been listening to it for several days and am all mellowed out and ready for Valentine's Day!

February is also Morricone month in New York with showings of these films, and (the only thing I'll miss seeing on Feb 25) he'll receive an honorary Oscar.

Good to see that good old Ennio still goes strong and this month will be "his" American month. He's been one of the most prolific soundtrack composers, and only now the Academy "remembers" to award him, after five nominations that went nowhere...
I'm just so glad because I love his music, almost all of it, and it's very difficult for me to select a specific soundtrack, but agree with you Lee, his romantic and mystic themes are probably the best.
I remember when I was at high school one of my schoolmates - Federica; I remember I had a remarkable crush on her! - whose mother was a music teacher, had known Ennio Morricone as they went to the same school in Rome. It's such a small world...

My goodness Lee, yes Ennio Morricone may look like an accountant, but his music certainly doesn't sound as if it was written by one. Now I'll go back counting my beans...LMAO

So many excellent soundtracks here! I second friend Toast's nomination of The Motorcycle Diaries also by Gustavo Santaolalia. One time I renamed the songs from scenes from Brokeback Mountain, and now they have become a second soundtrack on my ipod!!

New soundtracks I love are the ones from Slumdog Millionaire  and 127 Hours, both by A.R. Rahman. They also have good music to work out to!
