**This poll will stay open until Saturday February 17th, just in case some last minute Valentine's revelers decide to chime in! **
Since my boyfriend lives overseas, I will be celebrating Valentine's Day with him at the end of the month.
February 14th is also my dog's birthday, so I have invited some friends over to the house on Wednesday to celebrate Cody's birthday. He will be turning 3 years old on February 14th.
What are you planning to do?
-
Kinda never been a fan of Valentine's Day, even though I've been married for, like, ever. I think it just makes people who don't have a special someone feel like crap.
That said, my husband buys me chocolates and flowers and I buy him a sappy card every year almost as a kind of a joke (and an excuse to eat good chocolates) even though we know we don't like that kind of stuff, or maybe because we know. We don't go out, though. It's hard enough to get a table around here on a regular Friday or Saturday night, as we discovered last night, let alone on that night.
-
If I ever get off this forum, I'm going to go outside and start filling up my hot tub. I finally found it buried under a mountain of snow. I'd like to spend Valentine's Day hottubbing with my sweethearts--my daughter and son!
-
Valentine's day is like any other to me.
I don't do chocolates or roses or any of that .. 8)
If I get chocolates, I'll take 'em though .. who can turn down a box of chocolates? 8)
-
Just spend some quality time with my boyfriend! But I do that every day, so the 14th of Feb is no different!

I LOVE that! That's one of the sweetest things I have ever heard! What a wonderful way to spend Valentine's Day!

Valentines Day for me has always been about a romantic dinner. Even if it's with myself!

Well, I hope this year you have plans to spend Valentine's Day with a special person! :D

I'm just contrary tonight...picked 'Other'...I can't remember ever really liking Valentine's Day. Even when in GOOD relationships, it always seemed like such a 'pressure' sort of event. I have Maurice here, unwatched, waiting for me. Maybe I'll spend the evening with him. Feel free to put me on Ignore if I'm bumming you out. ;) ::)

I LOVE "Maurice"! It's one of my favorite movies! Enjoy!

*kelda tries to dig for information*
No plans - I'm not overly roamtic but we might order a takeaway once Callum has finished college and I have been to my callanetics class... and take it fomr there.
we did say a budget of £10 for a present tho.
-
I'm an inveterate romantic, David. And though Valentine's Day isn't particularly huge here in Australia, it seems to grow more and more in popularity each year.
We'll be doing lunch, followed by a movie, and who knows what might happen after that . . .

From what I have been hearing, we will be shovelling :'(

I am going to be sitting alone in a hotel room in Salt Lake City (business trip). I have two conference calls scheduled for Wednesday so I'll be working. No sugar for me on V-day!

Aw, Leslie, that makes me so sad. I'll be especially thinking of you on Wednesday and sending you loving thoughts ('cause you brought so much love and happiness into my life)

We probably won't be doing anything special on Valentine's Day. But on Saturday we went to Bruges, on of the most romantic cities in the world (in my humble opinon ;D), were we had a romantic lunch, strolled around and bought chocolates!

and a nice valentine themed chocolate shop! (http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m312/Belbbmfan/HPIM1110.jpg)

OMG! I am not happy, but very lucky, that I don't work at this shop ;D. I'd be 100 pounds overweight .
We were to Bruges many years ago. I only remember two things: it was beautiful, really romantic like you said. And we had the best Belgian wafers ever in Bruges. Speaking of a sweet tooth... ;)
Valentines Day was unknown here when I grew up and gained significance only the last few years, similar to Halloween.
Neither my husband nor I care about it. We won't do anything, it will just pass like any other day.

No plans. Am single.
One of my friends is out of town, otherwise I'd go do something with her, my other friend is in town, but I don't like to spend time with her very much.
So, it'll be just me and the cats probably watching TV like any other normal day. ;D

Those pictures of Belgium are beautiful! :)
Kerry, I loved the picture of Sydney too.

How lovely...but is that a high water mark on that pale building with red shades on the left side of the picture? :o :o :o

We are doing the "romantic dinner" bit. My husband is making me just what I asked for - banana walnut pancakes and bacon. Sounds just right. :) Looking very forward to it.
-
Not at all, Lynne! Let's watch Maurice and discuss it here together!!
This is amazing, Lynne & Lee! :o
Maurice is one of my very most favourite movies of all time, right up there with Brokeback Mountain and Beautiful Thing.
Not many people seem to have heard of it. I'm obviously in very good company here at BettterMost (but I already knew that!) :D

It is such a beautifully atmospheric film. A lot like BBM in its deep sorrow, loss and poignancy. That makes four of us who've seen it. I wonder how many more! :D

Well, I'm not absolutely positive Kerry, but I believe Melissa and Karan have both seen it too. So, I think it's fairly safe to say at least six of us have seen it. :D

I saw it in the theater, so that was a while ago. I remember liking it, but I barely remember it. Must be time for a re-watch!

Oh please do re-see it, Leslie. It's such a beautiful love story. I've seen it many times over the years and also read the original novel by E.M.Foster (A Room with a View, A Passage to India, etc.) a couple of times.

Maurice was the first Gay themed movie I ever saw!
I Loved it!! Love Hugh Grant too! He is so cute.
As for Valentines day?
We are expecting a Nor'Easter (big snow storm) later tonight and into Valentines Day. So i guess I'll be up early and shovelling so I can get to work at the Airport by 11:30 AM. Then at 8:00 PM I'll head home slip sliding along the way in my little PT Cruiser. Then I'll be digging out the driveway of snow so I can get the car in. I'll be lucky to have enough energy later to have a romantic moment with myself later!

Oh God David. You poor guy. You must be talking about the storm hitting us right now. It's really, REALLY bad here. Just about everything is closed. Many flights out of Indianapolis were cancelled today, and I suspect the same thing will happen tomorrow. Maybe they will let you have the day off. Do you think? I hate to think of you driving in this mess.
I'm going to wait until it stops snowing before I go out and shovel it. I'm not going to shovel that crap two or three times. >:( :P :)
-
Snow day? ROFLOL! Unless the Airport is closed, we (TSA Officers) are considered "Essential Personell" and have to be there. But as you said, Flights will no doubt be cancelled or delayed. And when people have to go back to the ticket counter to rebook flights then come back thru Security again, they get pretty cranky.
-
I'll be doing my best to ignore it. >:(

What are you trying to ignore Jeff? The storm? Good luck! I have 5 huge snow devils in front of my house and another one is trying to form on my driveway.
I think I'll be spending Valentine's Day snowed in. :(

-
Add me to that list David, I'm a big Merchant Ivory fan and have read all of EM Forresters works. I've seen Maurice almost as many times as I saw Brokeback :D Like Leslie I saw it in the theater the first few times.
Rarely snows where I live either Kerry...they don't call it Sunny Southern California for nothin ;) Of course we did have snow in Malibu this January for the first time in 80 years ::)

HAPPY VALENTINE'S EVERYONE!!!
I'm not doing anything special today, since I'm single at this moment. I thought I take myself out for lunch but I hurt my little toe running yesterday and it hurts when I walk. :-\ It is even bruised. So, I decided to stay home. I'll treat myself during the weekend, I guess.
But have a great valentine's day people!!!

Hi Lynne - Here's my all-time favourite gay movies. I can recommend all of them to you. Enjoy! :D
* Brokeback Mountain
* Maurice
* Beautiful Thing
* Priest
* Death in Venice
* The Naked Civil Servant
* Cabaret
* The Sum of Us
* Swan Lake (Matthew Bourne production)
The Sum of Us is an Australian film made in 1994, starring a very strapping young Russell Crowe, in one of his first starring roles, long before he went to Hollywood. He plays the part of a young gay plumber, living in Sydney. It's a beautiful film. I believe it's one of Russell's best. Have kleenex!
Though it's technically not a film, I can also recommend the Matthew Bourne production of Peter Tchaikovsky's ballet, Swan Lake. This is the gay version, in which the enchanted "swan" that Prince Siegfried falls in love with is male, not the usual female. Tragic gay love at its dramatic best, performed to the immortal, timeless melodies of the very gay Peter Tchaikovsky. It's available on DVD. Have kleenex for this one too!

I saw Maurice last night! Or should I say, this morning, since I watched it in the wee hours of the nite.
Come over to Arts & Entertainment and discuss it with me today!!
I was also very busy last nite shopping for flowers and candy for my teenaged son to present to his girlfriend "Sweet Melissa" today at school. He is only 15 so he called yesterday evening to ask me to stop on my way home from work and pick some things up. Two roses, one yellow and one white, and chocolates in a heart shaped box. Then, this a.m. I had to take him to school so he wouldn't have to endure taunts on the bus, carrying his presents.
As a valentine gift to myself, I'm planning to take off work early today and go see Jack Kerouac's scroll of "On the Road" which is on display at the downtown library.

That's very sweet of you ! 'Sweet Melissa' will be impressed, I'm sure.

Ok...as predicted...we are getting walloped with snow...I thought that it would mean a cozy day inside with a little (or a lot) of Valentine's Day nooky...but the man went to work..in a blizzard...how depressed am I?

Thanks, Fabienne! I asked my son why he was attracted to 'Sweet Melissa' and he said, she is funny, and she is like a best friend that I can hang with. I want to be like that!!

No Valentine Nooky? Now that just doesn't sound right atall :(
Look on the bright side: after a hard day shovelling snow, you'll have earned yourself at least a little backrub ;)

Let's face it Scott. This blizzard isn't bringing much luck to any of us. The next time he tries to do this, go sneak outside and remove the distributor from his car. That's what I would do. :D
-
As a valentine gift to myself, I'm planning to take off work early today and go see Jack Kerouac's scroll of "On the Road" which is on display at the downtown library.
scroll?? Hunh?
-
Kerouac was something of a stream-of-consciousness writer in the style of James Joyce. So, when he wrote the book On the Road, he just put a sheet of paper into the typewriter and started typing. No paragraphs, no margins. When he came to the end of the paper, he taped a new sheet onto the end. He ended up with a 600-ft-long "scroll" on which the manuscript was typed (and it was over a short period of time too). The library is showing the first 300 ft now and will show the second 300 ft beginning in mid-February.
Okay, since I am still sitting in my office, I have missed seeing the scroll today. Guess I'll just have to give myself a different Valentine's present!!
-
Scott,
It is too bad that you didn't have the day you hoped for today :(
I mean it. :)
Your having a blizzard?
Here its wind and ice.
Oh, its Valentines day? ??? ::)

Hmmm, maybe I'd better join Kerry in heading for the hills too. It was a glorious warm and sunny Valentine's Day here. Not a single snowflake in sight. ;D
A snow devil is a mini snow drift. The wind will blow the snow around into little mounds and people around here call them snow devils. :)
-
I wish Valentine's were like Groundhog Day. I need an instant replay!!
-
Valentine's Day usually makes me somewhat depressed, and then I hit the chocolate hard. Help me, out there, before I OD!! I bought all this chocolate, in addition to Girl Scout cookies, but it's for my kids, not me!!
-
Valentine's Day is usually depressing but this year, SURPRISE, I actually have a valentine I want to be with!
-
and, what are your plans?
I'll be home, watching The Walking Dead!
-
One word: Chocolate!
-
lmao!
I celebrate the day after Valentine's.....1/2 Price Chocolate day! :laugh;
-
Actually, I "plan" to watch Mercy Street on PBS at 10 p.m. that evening.
-
I bought a Valentine box and have it tucked away till then.
-
Oooh, he's got a box!
-
A Valentines box. . .I like that idea!!
Last Tuesday my grandsons and I spent a happy two hours making Valentines. I think the older one started to understand how he should put flower and kitten stickers on the one for mommy, rather than robots, swords and construction equipment.
I've been reading about St. Valentine, who seems to have been single, since he was a Roman Catholic priest. But he helped others by restoring sight and curing epilepsy, and he officiated in secret weddings of Christians, for which he was martyred. I'd like to do something to make others feel loved this Valentines Day, as I feel loved myself. I'm going to start with my elderly kitty, maybe give her a bath and then blow dry her fur as we sit before the fireplace.
-

What did you use to make the valentines? Do they still make construction paper and the kind of paste that naughty kids used to eat?

   So, Jeff, how did that paste taste?
We didn't make our Valentines at school, we used to buy the pre-printed up ones, sign names and hand them out.
I remember one year finding these valentines, and being excited to pass them out.

I thought it was cool that they included other heros besides the Super Friends (Batgirl, Supergirl, Plastic Man, Wonder Girl, Green Arrow, Black Canary) and that the one card had the Wonder Twins, who were always left off of everything. LOL
-
Yes, they make that paste, but we used glue sticks.
Cool Valentines, Chuck!
I was invited to a Galentine's party and I just realized what that means!! I think I'll go!!
-

Good to know. I think. ... ;D I use glue sticks for projects, too, but I don't make valentines.

Sounds like it's a party for women who are alone on Valentine's Day. :( But what about R.? ???
-
R. and I already celebrated Valentine's Day. On Thursday he gave me a Valentine's Day card (very romantic) and *gasp* a new snow shovel! (Mine was stolen). It was so sweet because it was obviously a new snow shovel, yet he said, "I had two, so I brought you one." He also brought food for my cat and toys for my grandchildren. Then, after a romantic interlude, we went out to have sushi, sitting beside an aquarium and enjoying Japanese treats. Then we came home and, after another romantic interlude, we had cinnamon rolls for dessert and looked through various gardening books. He walked my property and sketched out for me the precious bulbs from the Middle East that he would like to plant there.
We'll be getting together again on Sunday afternoon. The Galentines party is Saturday. I think I'll be allowed to attend if I don't gush too much about R.
-
I went out and bought a flowering plant and matching pot for R. for Valentine's Day. I also picked up all the ingredients for Sticky Toffee Pudding and made the sauce. Tonight I'm going to make a handmade Valentine and tomorrow I'm going to go to the mountaineering store and get ice cleats for him. He walks his dog twice a day and often slips on the ice.

Under the circumstances I think the snow shovel was a very thoughtful gift. I hope it's the kind that's supposedly easy on the back.
I'd be careful considerate of what I said if that party is for women who are alone.
I guess nothing says love like a pair of ice cleats. ;D

LUnch with the family today, and laundry. So romantic, huh? LOL later tonight, Walking Dead starts again.

I turned down an invitation to dinner from a very handsome, intelligent, personable young man because of my head cold. >:( So here I sit watching Casablanca on TCM, a very good movie though by no means high on my list of favorites. Another chapter of Mercy Street airs on PBS at 10 p.m.
-
Despite the snow, I ran an errand to the drugstore, and there was a huge pile of leftover Valentine's Day candy at the front of the store, all 50%.
Meanwhile, a store clerk was busy filling shelves with Easter candy. ...
-
Oh yeah, I've been seeing Easter candy out already, but Easter is early this year (March 27), so I can understand why they're putting it up so quickly.
As of today there are 40 days to Easter. So on Friday, March 18th, I'll be taking down the St. Patrick' stuff, and putting up the Easter stuff.

Not in so many words. It's just a matter of coordinating schedules.

I'm in the market for alternative Valentine's ideas this year. Flowers are so temporary, chocolates are sugary and caloric and most of us are single. How can we celebrate in an inclusive way?
Remembering back to my high school days, it was almost imperative to have a romantic interest, but on the other hand if you tried to start a relationship at that time, the other person would get all freaked out. So what about a frientine celebration? Or a galentine thing for the girls? Guyentine? Need your ideas, friends!!
-
How can we celebrate in an inclusive way?
How about by doing our best to ignore it? I know it's impossible to ignore it completely, because the stores are already full of Valentine's stuff, so it's right under your nose, but if it's possible for me to hate a day worse than New Year's, Valentine's would be it.
-
Here's a site that has ideas for celebrating "Galentine's Day", a day for gals to get together and enjoy themselves. http://hellogiggles.com/10-ways-to-celebrate-your-galentines-day/ (http://hellogiggles.com/10-ways-to-celebrate-your-galentines-day/)

Actually, I probably won't completely ignore it. I take this as one of those occasions to do something nice for myself, something that generally involves food, in this case probably lasagna for supper that evening. :)

perhaps some cookies for the office...

Actually, I probably won't completely ignore it. I take this as one of those occasions to do something nice for myself, something that generally involves food, in this case probably lasagna for supper that evening. :)
Probably not going to be lasagna after all. The steaks I ordered from Omaha Steaks that I bought with "points" from work arrived yesterday. Looks like it will be a steak instead.
Incidentally, I'm not quite sure what to make of those steaks. I ordered a combination pack of ribeye steaks and hamburgers. They sent me four "fillets of prime rib." Whether what I ordered is no longer available or simply out of stock, so they sent something else, I don't know. The fillets I'm sure would be considered a better cut of beef than the ribeyes, but I specifically ordered the ribeyes and the hamburgers because they are leaner meat. Prime rib is prime because of the fat in it, and these fillets are well marbled with fat. Call me goofy, but I would rather have had the leaner meat.

I occasionally buy from Ohama steaks as well. Their stuff is pretty good.

I agree. I've had before. I just wish they'd sent me steaks that didn't have so much fat in them. :(

No. Don't recall seeing anything like that listed on my "source." I'm sure they'd be good for making your own veal parmigiana.
-
Yeah, they are very good for veal parm.

I guess tomorrow all the leftover Valentine's Day candy will be on sale! :D

Steve & I attended the Valentine's Day Bloody Mary Social after a morning of lawn bowling at the RV park we are staying at on the CA/AZ border ;D Great thing about this place, we're 20-30 years younger than most everyone here.

There wasn't much left in the drug store when I stopped in on my way home from work, and it was already on sale! :o

It was an ordinary day until I closed up
shop my computer at 3 pm. I swung by my daughter's with two big baskets of laundry that I had washed, dried and folded. Then, I went by my mom's. She was having a problem with her phone. I fixed that and then took off for R's place. His border collie was overjoyed to see me. It always thinks I come to see HIM, not R. We went to our favorite sushi place and at 5:15 pm it was packed! But we got the last table. Back at his place, we watched another episode of Wooster and Jeeves with Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie. It was a great episode where they were in New York. R. gave me a sweet card and an anteater. That's right, an anteater stuffed animal. I brought it home and my new cat Luna is simultaneously frightened and attracted to it. Sweet day.

The steak turned out to be quite good. I was pleased and surprised to find that it fit on my little grill, so I was able to grill it instead of having to pan broil it. I had spaghetti, a salad, and a slice of bread along with it, and chocolate cupcakes for dessert. And I was surprised to find that after a meal like that, I didn't feel stuffed!
Seems like this should be on the "What did you eat for ..." thread, but that was my Valentine's Day.

Friends, I'm losing it. I'm really losing it. :( This morning I reviewed the purchases I've made with those points, and Omaha Steaks did not send me the wrong product. They sent me exactly what I ordered. I did not order a combination that included steaks and hamburgers. I ordered exactly what they sent me. :(

sounds like everyone had a great Valentine's day.

I'm staying home tonight!
Work was good though. There was a lot of exchanging of Valentines, and doughnuts, bagels, muffins and treats.
-
I. Hate. Valentine's. Day.
Fortunately, this year it's also Ash Wednesday.
Except I'm not too fond of Lent, either.
-
We don't have much in the way of Valentines day here.
Some businesses desperately try to sell heart shaped chocolate and things like that, but it's not a big thing here and I've never heard anyone talk about it or celebrating it.
I hope it stays that way. We don't need another imported american tradition with no roots or history here.

Time to rev up this topic again! I'm determined to find a better way to celebrate love. . .maybe by watching Brokeback Mountain, one of the most romantic films of all time!
-
I hope to devoutly ignore it, as I usually do.
-
LOL!
Not sure.....I generally don't do much, but I may watch a few of the Hallmark cheesy holiday movies, just to be silly.
