You all, I was just floored today when an incredible bouquet of flowers arrived at my door accompanied by a beautiful handwritten note! It says "Dearest Meryl, from all (and I do mean ALL) your BetterMost Brokie friends! We love ya ta bits!" Whoever the talented writer is sketched a spoon-ready can of BetterMost beans and a cowboy hat, too! ;D
The flowers are just GORGEOUS! Roses and lilies and crocuses and sweet peas, all in shades of gold and lavender (or is it tan and blue?), with a wide satin lavender ribbon. WOW! I can't get over how sweet you all are to organize this for me. It makes me cry to write this. If there was any pain for me in having to turn 60 today, you just completely dispelled it! :-* :-* :-*
On top of all the colorful posts of sheep and cymbal-crashing monks and High Priestesses and Heaths and amazing cakes, turkeys, berets, puppies, prostitutes, Scrabble games, dancin,' flowers, weird videos, kettle drums, booze, Big Apples and all, this is the fluffiest and most irresistible of icing! 8) 8) 8)

What I don't get is why your job is done after opening night?

After the show opens, there are no rehearsals, unless, God forbid, an understudy has to go on. In that case the Production Stage Manager, who runs the show from backstage, takes over. I emailed her my notes from opening night (they're performing the second show as I write this), so I trust she took care of them. My work--the concept, staging and execution-- is essentially done once the show is up. 8)

To Chrissi, Chuck, Lee, Jeff, Fran, Paul (love that pic!), Monika, Sonja, Gil, Marie and Kelda, THANK YOU for the lovely birthday greetings!! This is coming belatedly, as this last week has been a marathon of tech rehearsals for our opening of Britten's "The Turn of the Screw" at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, and sleep became all-important to survive. But we open tomorrow, and at last I have a night off.
Though my birthday had rehearsals from morning til night, I managed a really nice birthday dinner just across the street from the theater at a German restaurant called Berlyn: scrumptious vegetable strudel, a glass of perfect Riesling and chocolate almond cake with ice cream did the trick! :D
