Title: Anyone think we've heard the last of BBM as far as DVD's go.
Post by: Kd5000 on February 19, 2007, 01:39:57 pm: Are we stuck with what we got? Any reason to be optimistic we might get one with deleted scenes and commentary or is this a done deal. I see Ang Lee is busy with two other film projects so I guess he has moved on. :(

You never know - it took several years for the longer version of Dances With Wolves to make it onto DVD.

Classic Movies never go out of style, they are just approached from some different angle. I currently own 4 on VHS and 2 on DVD and I don't have them all. The last "4 Disc Collectors Edition" on DVD was awesome. And that was in October of 2005! And if BBM is not a True Classic, than I don't know what would be constituted as one. There's a lot of money to be made from the diehard fans of a film. AND BBM is that kind of film. According to "A Groundbreaking Success" which is on Collectors Disc 1, BBM brought in 180 million dollars worldwide. And that was before the 'Collectors Edition' was released.

Post by: oilgun on March 06, 2007, 09:41:09 pm: I'm secretly hoping for a Criterion edition. That would be sweet! I'm sure they would pay Ang Lee the two hours it takes to make a commentary track. (Hell, that's something even Heath might consider). If Ang still won't make one then I'm sure they could find some film expert who would be happy to oblige.

Criterion did a great job with My Own Private Idaho and it came out 14 years after the movie was first released.

The 'point' I failed to make in my comments regarding numerous editions of "The Wizard Of Oz" was that they all were BETTER than what was released before. When they found a pristine 1939 Technicolor Film Print in some salt mine, somewhere, the COLOR was better than I had ever seen before. Then they digitized that and released with a 'full' Dolby 5.1 stereo mix. The 4 disc Collectors Edition was released directly from the original Technicolor 3 strip negatives and MORPHED together to get more detail in the color than I had ever seen before that. It was stored at 50 megabytes a frame and there are 24 frames per second. And although the original opening B/W sepia negative was destroyed in a Vault fire, they used the best available version and went to work on that. The first change that I noticed is that in the first scene Toto must have pissed (spotted) on Dorothy's Dress. She must have carried Toto back to the starting point when another take was needed. I never noticed that before but if I look at older releases, it is there... it just doesn't stand out in a way that would catch anyone's attention.

We haven't seen the last Brokeback Mountain release, IMO...
