Done!  Sparkle and all, I'm keeping this stickeyed again until someone tells me not to.  Feel free to PM me your preference!!!  The smiley makes it easy to see and not confuse with the other ABC threads, but keeping it at the top makes it more so.  I'm for whatever the group wants.

Will,

Just thinking out loud here, but I thought someone else might benefit from this. I you play an "A" on this game, that means that you can also play a D, G, J, M, P, S, V, and Y.

But if you hold off until B, then you can play a E, H, K, N, Q, T, W, and Z.

If your first play is a C, then you can go with F, I, L, O, R, U, and X.

This is in a perfect world of course requiring split second timing and no computer laggies or glitches. But I'm hoping to hit all 8 plays one of these rounds. It's one of my fondest ambitions!!

I would just like to thank all of our wonderful moderators: Fantastic Fran, Amazing Ann Marie and Wonderful Will. You are all briliant moderators and this boards wouldn't be what it is without you guys.
Ann Marie you are my little organisation fairy, you come into 6 degrees when I am sleeping and when I wake up and check my thread it is all straightened out, without a crease and all is right with the world. Plus you are a briliant 6 degrees player.
Fran you too are a fabulous moderator, very organised and a truly inspired person from what I have read in your ABC answers. I have not really gotten to know you yet, but I seriously hope to change that soon as you seem a briliant person.
Will, what can I say; a genius, friendly, comedic, lively, creative and subtle . You have given my a tremendous amount of joy with reading your posts and getting to know you through PMs, you are a wonderful person and I like to think of you as someone extrodinary that I will remember for a lifetime.

I am sorry if I am being sappy, but I just want to portray how much I love you guys and how much I respect you and your work to make this board the amazing place it is.
So thank you guys and big kisses to all of you: :-* :-* :-*

I suggest everyone follows in my footsteps and show the mods what they mean to us. ;)

This is a challenging game and the fun -- the challenge -- is going to increase as we head into our 60th round! Don't give up, there's a lot more opportunities for you to play and to learn more about the fascinating topic of BBM. I get plenty of PMs and have to make many corrections even though I've been playing for months, but the satisfaction of playing out a good "V" or "Z" word more than makes up for it.

It lets me dissect the movie and realize a few more of the truths that it talks about.

Brokeback Mountain is a masterpiece and will stand up to our repeated examination of it.

Thank you to everyone still playing the game, and thank you to Fran-E and Memento-Dearest and Mayor WillYumm for keeping it running so smoothly.

As the "ABCs of BBM" game has advanced into its amazing 106th round, I thought this might be as good a place as any to try to describe what it is that keeps us coming back to this game.

So I will start:

I keep posting letters because, for me, there is much satisfaction to be gained in seeing something through to its conclusion.  I like the idea of working towards a goal.
Title: Re: "ABCs of BBM" Game Comments
Post by: southendmd on June 06, 2006, 01:31:47 pm
That's interesting, Fran. I'm not sure what the "conclusion" would be.
I enjoy the process myself.

I also got hooked on IMDb.  I think it was connecting to other crazy, obsessed people who are fun and witty and know a lot about our beloved film. I'm delighted at what other folks come up with, and I enjoy the challenge.

I tend to check the game in between stuff at work rather than at home. It's a great diversion. It's also a way of keeping the film fresh in my mind every day.

Send in the Clowns
   Forgive me Stephen Sondheim

Isn't it rich?     All those sheep and no recipes
Are we a pair?    Ennis and Jack
Me here at last on the ground,    Ennis in his trailer
You in mid-air.    Jack in heaven
Send in the clowns.    Those ABC clowns

Isn't it bliss?    Answers Played List
Don't you approve?    Mods never approve
One who keeps tearing around,    Will Yum
One who can't move.    Waiting out two letters
Where are the clowns?    Those ABC clowns
Send in the clowns.    Can't keep them away!

Just when I'd stopped opening doors,    JT is gone
Finally knowing the one that I wanted was yours,    Damn, You beat me to the post, again
Making my entrance again with my usual flair,    Will Yum
Sure of my lines,    Are you a teacher or what?
No one is there.    Come on it's only 3 a.m.

Don't you love farce?    A farce of nature
My fault I fear.    I deserved that XXX.
I thought that you'd want what I want.    Just add -ing
Sorry, my dear.    If you XXX me once more I will ...
But where are the clowns?    Those ABC clowns.
Quick, send in the clowns.    Well at least two more
Don't bother, they're here.    The Xcitement is rare

Isn't it rich?    All those words . .
Isn't it queer,    "Q" is querulent
Losing my timing this late    "W" is wristwatch
In my career?    Dr. Dr. there must be a medical term.
And where are the clowns?    Dreaming of Brokeback
There ought to be clowns.    Prowling around.
Well, maybe next year.    A quadrennium, I fear

Oh Fran
I think the ABCs of Brokeback are moderately interesting.

Well done Toast! I would only change one line...

Aren't we a pair?    Yes, we're a zeugmatic construction
 :D

Sorry to bump Ennis and Jack but they have their share of the glory and this is for us crazy ABC clowns.

Yes, Zee, after 105 complete rounds, the Playerz have more than earned their share of glory!  What would this game be without its clever and committed Playerz?

Toast,

You have made my day with your very clever post!

Thanks for acknowledging the importance of the Answer List.  This "Answer Gyrl" is thrilled to see the ABCs Answer List immortalized in verse.  I believe Sandy and Ann Marie will be pleased, too.

Just one picky little detail on my end....  Mods "never" approve?  Them are fighting words.  Come on, you know the Mods "always" approve; that is, unless there's a "problem."  (Mods do not like "problems.")  But I'm going to grant you poetic license...this time anyway.

Hello, everyone,

Yours truly regards the ABCs of Brokeback Mountain yet another tribute to the story and film about my son Jack and his longterm secret boyfriend Ennis whose love together moved a mountain!

I am most grateful for what to me is so much more than just a game.  Jack would have loved it.  We used to regularly play parcheese.

God bless all of your delightful participants.

My compliments to Toast for his ABC version of Send in the Clowns. It was very creative and
something we all could identify with.

An interesting bit of trivia about Stephen Sondheim: "His lyrics are often intricately crafted, like a puzzle where every piece has a precise placement An avid fan of games, in 1968 and 1969 Sondheim published an astonishingly inventive series of word puzzles in New York magazine. These crossword puzzles were models of form and creativity, and started the rise of cryptic crosswords in the United States."

My fascination with the ABC's is the thrill of the hunt. Finding just the right word can be exciting, creative, mind-expanding, and it brings instant gratification. Not many things
do that in life.

Maybe Sondheim will consider publishing a musical version of the ABC's in New York Magazine.

Toast, that's the best rendition of "Send in the Clowns" ever!  It even surpasses my previous favorite, when Judy Collins sang it to the Muppets!

My ABCs fascination goes back to my first post in Round 6 on IMDb, which I think was sometime in February.  And I think what drew me in was the fact that by then I had been thoroughly obsessed with the movie for 2 months, reading everything I could about it and spending nearly all my free time (and much of my work time back then) on the message board.  And along with it came that perplexing, lingering sadness and depression that stuck with lots of us in the beginning.

The ABCs stuck out very clearly as a way I could actively celebrate the movie in a fun and light-hearted manner -- and a challenging one as well.  Plus it served as another opportunity to find ways to relate anything and everything to BBM!

And here we are, more than 100 rounds later.   :D

P.S. And I have to admit, despite the frustrations, one of my fondest memories will be the weekend we spent frantically saving all the rounds when the original thread got locked down!  The crisis itself wasn't fun, but the act of us pulling together to save the game was.

=updated=
And I almost forgot my other favorite, Fran's ABZ thread.   ;D

Ann Marie,

That was the weekend you became my new hero.  I know Lee (now Zee) saved a bunch of rounds, too, but you did the bulk of the work, just so we'd be able to continue our game.  I was grateful and quite impressed.

Bravo to Toast for his "Send in the Clowns" send-up.

I'm thinking of the meaning of the phrase:  I believe it has to do with providing comic relief in the face of tragedy.  So, when someone falls from the trapeze or the tight rope, or has a serious injury in a rodeo, the clowns come in as a distraction.

I guess in some way our ABC of BBM game is similar. Many of us feel deeply about the film in all its tragic splendor, and it's good to "lighten up" a bit. I'll never forget how much I laughed at the "Cowboy Etiquette" thread (I printed out the whole damned thing for posterity), and the "Lines U won't hear" still cracks me up.

The ABCs are a great way to stay connected to the film and its devotees, and not have to cry all the time!

BTW, Toast, "Mods never approve"?  Shit, that's hard!
I, for one, truly appreciate our mods' efforts: keeping the game neat and tidy and well-oiled ain't easy.  We need them: to discover that I've again posted a word I posted a hundred rounds ago because I'm too stupid and my dumbass control F thingie don't work right. They're babysitting the sheep, while we get to stem the rose to our hearts' content. ((Aside to Gyrlz: I am not referring to you as dogz.))
Frandy, Sandy and Ann-dy are the best!

Omigawd, I'm starting to sound like Will.

Thanks, Fran, great thread.

Ok, before I tell U this dream, remember it was near full moon last nite! So I dreamed that some troll came along and planted a bug so that anytime anybody posted on the BetterMost board they would dematerialize, along with everything around them, leaving a big hole in the ground. So the ABC players came up with a solution. We instantly came together in one room which was like NORAD in the middle of a mountain, with a ring of computers around us. We figured out that we could post to the board harmlessly by pairing up and hugging each other very tightly until we became very dense and then posting a new word. The bug would begin to dematerialize us but as long as we were hugging it would just take bites out of our shoulders and sides, and then give up and we would spring back to wholeness again. So we just kept posting new words as fast as we could so that no one else could post anything and be harmed. We were on our 5,000th round.

=comment=

Tell me I'm crazy, but the idea of a 5,000th round
makes me very happy!  See you there, Lee.

I found Will's ABCs game in IMDB and was enjoying the fact that many others were as obsessed as I was with this wonderful film.  I was one of several ardent players until IMDB closed us down due to “space limitations.”  Will relocated to BetterMost and PMed me saying this was the place to be and I skedaddled on over.  It was quite odd to be playing while Will was on his hiatus, and I took a little time off as well.  However, now that he’s back, we shall continue in our glory and I’m so pleased that Will is returning to be our leader once again!  Bravo!   ;)

I think that even Will Shortz, the crossword editor of The New York Times and former editor of Games Magazine, would be impressed with our amazing Answer List. He is the only person in the world to hold a college degree in Enigmatology, the study of puzzles, which he earned from Indiana University in 1974. Perhaps one of our playerz will be the second person to hold such a degree. After 178+ rounds, any one of our playerz would certainly qualify.

Annie Proulx used about 2475 words to write the short story "Brokeback Mountain".  We are now in round 232; so we have used up more than 6040 words to highlight some details of her story.  Annie used one "Z" word "zone", but oodles of "S" words -- many of which are still unplayed here.

I would like to take this chance to wish Annie Proulx a "Happy Birthday" -- she turns 71 on August 22, 2006 -- and to bring more beauty to the ABCz Answers Played List.

I am proud to see that you have taken my suggestion about calling the ABCs the ABCz, Will.

Glad to bring even more beauty to this list.

Post by: memento on August 30, 2006, 09:41:06 pm
As of tonight there was a problem with adding Z's, and in the process we lost some of them so that they are not all there.  We will be posting a bogus "Z" in this upcoming round- just leaving a space for it to be filled in later.  The Administrators have been notified and we are waiting for them to get back to us.

Due to the space limitations on individual posts, it was necessary to split the "ABCs of BBM" Answers List into two separate posts:  "A" to "M" words and "N" to "Z" words.

Thanks Seepian. It's nice to be called fantastic, but I'm equally happy being called weird. I'm proud to be weird! Annie Proulx is weird too, and so are our beloved Ennis and Jack. There is a word, formidable, which means something like fantastic in French, but in English it's not really a compliment. Also many words which used to be terms of respect are now derogatory, and vice versa. For instance, the word "hag" used to mean wise woman. It now means an old, ugly, useless woman. THere are a lot of words like that.

Thanks, Chrissi.  The different themes have been fun, and they've enabled us to use many words that wouldn't necessarily come to mind.

I'm glad you're still enjoying the game.

"ABCs of BBM" answer list!!!
Title: Re: "ABCs of BBM" Game Comments

The last few weeks (starting before my vacation) I noticed that "easy", everyday words seem to appear more often lately. Words like starved, trained, borrow (or was it borrowed?) and today armpit. Every time, I think 'Oh, did really nobody use this (common, everyday) word before?'

Since I don't follow the ABCs religously anymore, maybe my impression is totally wrong. Or my impression might be correct, but this cumulation of "easy" words is by pure chance. But I did ask myself if you changed something with the rules or have a new "trick"? Maybe deliberately picking already played words from the answers list and putting them into a different grammatical form?

Anyway: compliments to all those who still play the ABCs! It's impressive.

Thanks, Chrissi.

In answer to your questions:

The appearance of the easier, more ordinary words all of a sudden is pure chance.  Apparently a lot of them were overlooked in the earlier rounds.  It's kind of cool when someone plays one now, especially if it happens to be a word from a well-known line in the story or screenplay.

So, no, there hasn't been a change in the rules with regard to words not repeating, but we did eliminate the "K", "Q", "Y", and "Z" words a while ago.  And to the best of my knowledge, every word in the answer list is unique.  (But I wouldn't bet my life on it.)  :)

Hi Fran,

thanks for your reply.

That's what I thought and it was the "silky armpit hair" that finally made me ask about it.

Keep playin'!  :)

Ha!

An ABC game comment thread!  ;D

It's fun to see what an awesome thing the answer thread was in them early days, since I've simply taken it for granted ever since I entered the game.

On a different note I'm sad there's so few players left. The game is going really slow right now.  :(
