Still more songs that remind us of Ennis and Jack
« on: May 18, 2007, 09:31:37 am »
Here it is, two years later, and at least two months since I've watched any part of the movie last, and this song by Evanescence hit me hard for the first time just this morning:

Wake Me Up Inside ~ Evanescence

(The parts below in parentheses are spoken parts.  Can't you just hear Jack and Ennis speaking the two parts to each other?)

How can you see into my eyes
Like open doors?
Lading you down into my core,
Where I've become so numb.

Without a soul,
My spirit's sleeping somewhere cold,
Until you find it there and lead it back
Home.

(Wake me up)
Wake me up inside.
(I can’t wake up)
Wake me up inside.
(Save me)
Call my name and save me from the dark.
(Wake me up)
Bid my blood to run.
(I can’t wake up)
Before I come undone.
(Save me)
Save me from the nothing I've become.

Now that I know what I'm without,
You can't just leave me.
Breathe into me and make me real.
Bring me to life.

(Wake me up)
Wake me up inside.
(I can’t wake up)
Wake me up inside.
(Save me)
Call my name and save me from the dark.
(Wake me up)
Bid my blood to run.
(I can’t wake up)
Before I come undone.
(Save me)
Save me from the nothing I've become.

Bring me to life.
(I've been living a lie.
There's nothing inside.)
Bring me to life.

Frozen inside without your touch,
Without your love, darling.
Only you are the life among the dead.

(All of this time,
I can't believe I couldn't see
Kept in the dark,
but you were there in front of me.
I've been sleeping a 1000 years, it seems.
I've got to open my eyes to everything.)

(Without a thought
Without a voice
Without a soul
Don't let me die here.
There must be something more.)

Bring me to life.

(Wake me up)
Wake me up inside.
(I can’t wake up)
Wake me up inside.
(Save me)
Call my name and save me from the dark.
(Wake me up)
Bid my blood to run.
(I can’t wake up)
Before I come undone.
(Save me)
Save me from the nothing I've become.

Bring me to life.
(I've been living a lie. There's nothing inside.)
Bring me to life.
No more beans!

When I first saw the movie (for me it's only been a month).
I don't know why but I thought of this song. I think it fits. I can see this coming from Ennis.
Ecspecially the last verse.

IT MIGHT BE YOU (Stephen Bishop)

Time, I've been passing time watching trains go by
All of my life
Lying on the sand watching seabirds fly ok, this line maybe not so much
Wishing there could be someone
Waiting home for me

Something's telling me it might be you
It's telling me it might be you
All of my life

Looking back as lovers go walking past
All of my life
Wondering how they met and what makes it last
If I found the place would I recognize the face

Something's telling me it might be you
It's telling me it might be you
So many quiet walks to take
So many dreams to wake and there's so much love to make

I think we’re gonna need some time
Maybe all we need is time
And it's telling me it might be you
All of my life

I've been saving love songs and lullabies
And there's so much more
No one's ever heard before
Something's telling me it might be you
Yeah, it's telling me it must be you and
I'm feeling it'll just be you
All of my life
It's you, it's you I've been waiting for all of my life
Maybe it's you Maybe it's you I've been waiting for all of my life.

Yeeeeh! A new songs thread!

I listened to this one by Eva Cassidy - I know you by heart

Midnights in Winter
The glowing fire
Lights up your face in orange and gold.
I see your sweet smile
Shine through the darkness
It's line is etched in my memory.

So I'd know you by heart.

Mornings in April
Sharing our secrets
We'd walk until the morning was gone.
We were like children
Laughing for hours
The joy you gave me lives on and on.

Cause I know you by heart.

I still hear your voice
On warm Summer nights
Whispering like the wind.

You left in Autumn
The leaves were turning
I walked down roads of orange and gold.
I saw your sweet smile
I heard your laughter
You're still here beside me every day.

And it's a weird thing, but Street Spirit (Fade Out) by Radiohead always makes me cry because of the last two lines... Immerse your soul in love...

Rows of houses, all bearing down on me
I can feel their blue hands touching me
All these things into position
All these things we'll one day swallow whole
Fade out again, Fade out.

This machine will, will not communicate
These thoughts and the strain I am under
Be a world child, form a circle
Before we all, go under
fade out again, fade out again

Cracked eggs, dead birds
Scream as they fight for life
I can feel death, can see its beady eyes
All these things into position
All these things we'll one day swallow whole
Fade out again, Fade out again

Immerse your soul in love
Immerse your soul in love

Girl, You know I love Miss Eva!  ;D

Here is another song I can see Ennis in. The song reminds me of Jack but it captures how Ennis must have felt.

This one makes me cry.

Autum Leaves
Eva Cassidy

The falling leaves
Drift by my window.
The falling leaves of red and gold.

I see your lips,
the summer kisses,
the sunburned hands i used to hold.

Since you went away
the days grow long
And soon i'll hear old winter song
But i miss you most of all my darling
When autumn leaves start to fall

Since you went away
the days grow long
And soon i'll hear old winter song
But i miss you most of all my darling
When autumn leaves start to fall

I miss you most of all my darling
When autumn leaves start to fall

This song was written by my fellow Geargia boy Johnny Mercer

Well, since we're talking about Eva Cassidy, I *must* post the link to this youtube again, and the lyrics follow:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ocwLOQcGaow

Fields of Gold ~ sung by Eva Cassidy

You'll remember me when the west wind moves
Among the fields of barley
You can tell the sun in his jealous sky
When we walked in fields of gold

Will you stay with me will you be my love
Among the fields of barley
And you can tell the sun in his jealous sky
When we walked in fields of gold

I never made promises lightly
And there have been some that I've broken
But I swear in the days still left
We will walk in fields of gold
We'll walk in fields of gold

Many years have passed since those summer days
Among the fields of barley
See the children run as the sun goes down
As you lie in fields of gold

You'll remember me when the west wind moves
Among the fields of barley
You can tell the sun in his jealous sky
When we walked in fields of gold
When we walked in fields of gold
When we walked in fields of gold

Strung Out
by Steve Perry

One very happy warm summer night
I saw your face, what could I do
So carefully I walked straight up to you

And in the shadow of a moonlit night
I saw those eyes a-shinin' through
Heart of gold I love you, misty blue

Whoa, it's hard to love somebody
Especially when they don't belong to you
'Cause they're loving someone else
Strung out and hung up on you

I feel like Bogart in a crazy movie
Bogie an' me, we never beg
But this time maybe I've got voices in my head

They're sayin' that she's never been good to you
And she's always hurt and let you down
If what you need is good lovin', I'll be around

It's hard to love somebody
Especially when they don't belong to you
'Cause they're loving someone else
Strung out and hung up on you
Strung out
Strung out

Well, it's hard to love somebody
Especially when they don't belong to you
'Cause they're loving someone else
Strung out and hung up on you

It's hard to love somebody
Oh, when they don't belong to you
'Cause they're loving someone else,
Strung out and hung up on you
Strung out and hung up on you
Yeah, strung out
The parts in red apply to our boys!

Ooh, Lee.  I used to love that "Strung Out" song.  I'd forgotten all about it, in fact.  Your posting it brings back some very nice memories.

Hi everyone!
We had a thread like this on IMDB... and I got a bit compulsive about it I'm afraid... it's addictive, and suddenly every song was reminding me of Jack and Ennis.. But I just heard this one tonight for the first time, and I googled the lyrics because I liked it so much, and it makes me think of tent scene two..

"Come Here" by Kath Bloom

There's wind that blows in from the north.
And it says that loving takes this course.
Come here. Come here.
No I'm not impossible to touch I have never wanted you so much.
Come here. Come here.
Have I never laid down by your side.
Baby, let's forget about this pride.
Come here. Come here.
Well I'm in no hurry. Don't have to run away this time.
I know you're timid.
But it's gonna be all right this time.

Wow, Malina.  Is that dead on, or what?  ("C'mere.  S'allright...")

And it's great to see you here!  I remember having many lovely conversations with you over at IMDb.  Sorry to hear, again, that the trolls are still so ugly over there.  I guess in a way it's a good thing that even they can't just let this movie go, right?

Hope you'll enjoy our little haven here.  God knows I do.  :)

Hi Barb!

You know, I didn't even notice the 'all right' in the last line until I'd read it a few times, and it already 'felt like' J and E to me... and then when I noticed that, it just confirmed it!

It's good to see you! I started slow, but I'm loving it here now, too. I remember you fondly from IMDB. It's good to see familiar... I was going to say faces, but... well, names! Actually, I see that I could show my face here, if I ever figured out how to and found a photo I didn't hate.... kind of a scary thought! But I like your picture :)

Now I can't take the credit for this one .... Daphne posted these song lyrics over on IMDb.  Me and Malina cried like a couple of babies when we read them.  they are so perfect for Ennis and Jack.

Rascall Flatts...  "What Hurts the Most".

OMG. I LOVE this song. For me, it's one of the most fitting. I heard it first on Brokeback Radio (where else?).

Quote
In fact I posted a youtube BBM montage to this song somewhere on one of the forums ... not sure where!!

Oh my. The song alone is enough to make me cry. But as a BBM vid I'm sure I'd be a puddle on the floor.

I can see Jack singing this to Ennis!

"Making Memories Of Us"

I'm gonna be here for you baby
I'll be a man of my word
Speak the language in a voice that you have never heard
I wanna sleep with you forever
And I wanna die in your arms
In a cabin by a meadow where the wild bees swarm

And I'm gonna love you like nobody loves you
And I'll earn your trust making memories of us

I wanna honor your mother
I wanna learn from your pa
I wanna steal your attention like a bad outlaw
I wanna stand out in a crowd for you
A man among men
I wanna make your world better than it's ever been

And I'm gonna love you like nobody loves you
And I'll earn your trust making memories of us

We'll follow the rainbow
Wherever the four winds blow
And there'll be a new day
Comin' your way

I'm gonna be here for you from now on
This you know somehow
You've been stretched to the limits but it's alright now
And I'm gonna make you this promise
If there's life after this
I'm gonna be there to meet you with a warm, wet kiss

And I'm gonna love you like nobody loves you
And I'll earn your trust making memories of us
I'm gonna love you like nobody loves you
And I'll win your trust making memories of us

This is a song for Ennis and Jack that I listened to on my way in to work today...my son left this CD in my car when he borrowed it. I think I'm gonna adopt this as my theme song for 2008!!

We got some thing we both know it,
We dont talk too much about it
Aint no real big secret, all the same,
Somehow we get around it

Listen, it dont really matter to me
Baby, you believe what you wanna believe
You see, you dont have to live like a refugee

Somewhere, somehow, somebody must have
Kicked you around some
Tell me why you wanna lay there,
Revel in your abandon

Honey, it dont make no difference to me
Baby, everybodys had to fight to be free
You see, you dont have to live like a refugee
No baby, you dont have to live like a refugee

Baby, we aint the first
Im sure a lot of other lovers been burned
Right now this aint real to you
Its one of those things you got to feel to be true

Somewhere, somehow, somebody must have
Kicked you around some
Who knows, maybe you were kidnapped,
Tied-up, taken away, and held for ransom

Honey, it dont really matter to me
Baby, everybodys ha d to fight to be free
You see, you dont have to live like a refugee
No, you dont have to live like a refugee
Baby, you dont have to live like a refugee

- sung by Tom Petty

I posted the song "Hallelujah" on the Brokeback Radio forum.  Written by Leonard Cohen, and I prefer the k.d. lang version.  One of our buds pointed out that the song refers to females so I just pasted the last verse for you.

It always makes me think of Ennis.

Maybe there's a God above,
But all i've ever learnt from love,
Is how to shoot somebody who outdrew ya,
It's not a cry that u hear at night,
It's not someone whos seen the light,
It's a cold and broken hallelujah

This has always been the only song that reminded (of Ennis at least).  I have no doubt it's been posted before.  I know, it's Linda Ronstadt, but hell she can sing.

Desperado

Desperado, why don't you come to your senses
You've been out ridin' fences,
for so long - now.
Ohh you're a hard one.
I know that you've got your reasons.
These things that are pleasin'you
Can hurt you somehow.

Don't you draw the queen of diamonds boy
She'll beat you if she's able.
You know the queen of hearts is always your best bet.
Now it seems to me, some fine things
Have been laid upon your table.
But you only want the ones
That you can't get.

Desperado,
Ohhhh you aint getting no younger.
Your pain and your hunger,
They're driving you home.
And freedom, ohh freedom.
Well that's just some people talking.
Your prison is walking through this world all alone.

Don't your feet get cold in the winter time?
The sky won't snow and the sun won't shine.
It's hard to tell the night time from the day.
And you're losing all your highs and lows
aint it funny how the feeling goes
away...

Desperado,
Why don't you come to your senses?
come down from your fences, open the gate.
It may be rainin', but there's a rainbow above you.
You better let somebody love you.
(let sombody love you)
You better let somebody love you...ohhh..hooo
before it's too..oooo.. late.

Hi Scott,

I can't play the video, long story about speakers, I won't bore you with it!  But reading the lyrics in my head, I hear the Eagles version and I must say that this song is absolutely perfect.  It fits perfectly.

Jack:

Lay your head where my heart used to be
Hold the earth above me
Lay down in the green grass
Remember when you loved me

Come closer don't be shy
Stand beneath a rainy sky
The moon is over the rise
Think of me as a train goes by

Clear the thistles and brambles
Whistle 'Didn't He Ramble'
Now there's a bubble of me
And it's floating in thee

Stand in the shade of me
Things are now made of me
The weather vane will say...
It smells like rain today

God took the stars and he tossed 'em
Can't tell the birds from the blossoms
You'll never be free of me
He'll make a tree from me

Don't say good bye to me
Describe the sky to me
And if the sky falls, mark my words
We'll catch mocking birds

Lay your head where my heart used to be
Hold the earth above me
Lay down in the green grass
Remember when you loved me

---Green Grass
    by Tom Waits

[maybe not the line "now theres a bubble of me..etc]

Ennis:

There's a hundred bluebirds
Up above the clouds
Putting all the color in the sky
And twice as many tear drops
there to wash it down
Every one's another lullaby
But there's only one and only
Who could go and leave me lonely
There's a world of trouble
Trying to take its turn
I can hear it shaking underground
And half a dozen lessons
I might never learn
Not until them troubles come around
But there's only one and only
Who could go and leave me lonely
There's a mile of blacktop
Where the road begins
It takes a time or two to recognize
Growing at the roadside
Scattered by the wind
Are everybody's unsaid sad goodbyes

But there's only one and only
Who could go and leave me lonely
You're the only one and only
Why'd you go and leave me alone

---Only One and Only

Imagine this is Ennis singing:

Strong Enough by Sheryl Crow

God, I feel like hell tonight
Tears of rage I cannot fight
I'd be the last to help you understand
Are you strong enough to be my man?
Nothing's true and nothing's right
So let me be alone tonight
Cause you can't change the way I am
Are you strong enough to be my man?

Lie to me
I promise I'll believe
Lie to me
But please don't leave

I have a face I cannot show
I make the rules up as I go
It's try and love me if you can
Are you strong enough to be my man?

When I've shown you that I just don't care
When I'm throwing punches in the air
When I'm broken down and I can't stand
Will you be man enough to be my man?

Lie to me
I promise I'll believe
Lie to me
But please don't leave

"To be alone with you" by Sufjan Stevens. I think of Ennis alone in his trailer at the end, remembering Jack.

Sorry, I don't know how to paste the actual video into the message as people seem to be doing!

I'd swim across lake Michigan
I'd sell my shoes
I'd give my body to be back again
In the rest of the room

To be alone with you
To be alone with you
To be alone with you
To be alone with you

You gave your body to the lonely
They took your clothes
You gave up a wife and a family
You gave your goals

To be alone with me
To be alone with me
To be alone with me
You went up on a tree

To be alone with me you went up on the tree

I'll never know the man who loved me

"Time Passes Slowly"

Time passes slowly up here in the mountain
We sit beside the bridges and walk beside the fountains
Catch the wild fishes that float though the stream
Time passes slowly when you're lost in a dream.

Once I had a sweetheart, she was fine and good-looking
She sat in the kitchen while her mama was cooking
Stared on out the window to the stars high above
Time passes slowly when you're searching for love.

Ain't no reason to go in a wagon to town
Ain't no reason to go to the fair
Ain't no reason to go up, ain't no reason to go down
Ain't no reason to go anywhere.

Time passes slowly up here in the daylight
We stare straight ahead and try so hard to stay right
Like the red rose of summer that blooms in the day
Time passes slowly and fades away.

Heya,

I've posted this before in a thread here somewhere about songs that remind us of Ennis.  But, I think it works for both Ennis and Jack just as well.  I heard this song again today on the radio... and it never fails to make me think of BBM.

Fleetwood Mac- "Landslide"

I took my love, I took it down
Climbed a mountain and I turned around
I saw my reflection in the snow covered hills
till the landslide brought me down

Oh, mirror in the sky
What is love
Can the child within my heart rise above
Can I sail thru the changing ocean tides
Can I handle the seasons of my life

Well, Ive been afraid of changing
cause Ive built my life around you
But time makes you bolder
Children get older
Im getting older too

Oh, take my love, take it down
Climb a mountain and turn around
If you see my reflection in the snow covered hills
Well the landslide will bring it down

If you see my reflection in the snow covered hills
Well maybe the landslide will bring it down

Isn't it the best?  :-*  I remember posting this a long time ago, too, but I can't remember where. I especially love the Dixie Chicks version...

I have always loved this song, best saxophone solo in the world ever. But the words are just so apt for the 1st tent scene, the reunion scene, and also how Ennis says so much, yet never says a word.

It is called WILL YOU by HAZEL OCONNOR.

Its getting kind of late,
I wonder if you'll stay now
or will you just politely say goodnight.

I move a little closer to you,
not knowing quite what to do,
and I'm feeling all fingers and thumbs.

And then we touch, much to much
this moment has been waiting for a long long time.
It makes me shiver, makes me quiver,
this moment I am so unsure,
this moment I have waited for.
is it something you've been waiting for.
waiting for too?

Take of your eyes, bare your soul,
gather me to you and make me whole,
tell me your secrets, sing me the song,
sing it to me in the silent tongue.

So many of the words seem so apt.

This moment has been waiting for a long time.

Then we touch much to much.

This moment I am so unsure.

Is it something you've been waiting for too.

Gather me to you make me whole.

Sing it to me in the silent tongue.

The melody in itself is stunning,I.M.O, the sax solo is breathtaking ,and it seems to me to sum up so much of the sexual and emotional relationship between Jack and Ennis. Both the tent scene and the reunion scene.

Well I hope you love the song as much as I do.Not only do I love the sentiment, and think it a musical description of Jack  and Ennis,I just love the fact that the melody is so haunting. It always moves me to the core. There is an underlying feeling of sadness to the whole thing.

Girl, You know I love Miss Eva!

Here is another song I can see Ennis in. The song reminds me of Jack but it captures how Ennis must have felt.

This one makes me cry.

Autum Leaves
Eva Cassidy

The falling leaves
Drift by my window.
The falling leaves of red and gold.

I see your lips,
the summer kisses,
the sunburned hands i used to hold.

Since you went away
the days grow long
And soon i'll hear old winter song
But i miss you most of all my darling
When autumn leaves start to fall

Since you went away
the days grow long
And soon i'll hear old winter song
But i miss you most of all my darling
When autumn leaves start to fall

I miss you most of all my darling
When autumn leaves start to fall

This song was written by my fellow Geargia boy Johnny Mercer

I absolutely luv this one

Appologies if I've posted this already, but this is a song that reminds me of Ennis and Jack remembering their time on the mountain.

Brothers in Arms

These mist covered mountains
Are a home now for me
But my home is the lowlands
And always will be
Some day youll return to
Your valleys and your farms
And youll no longer burn
To be brothers in arms

Through these fields of destruction
Baptisms of fire
Ive watched all your suffering
As the battles raged higher
And though they did hurt me so bad
In the fear and alarm
You did not desert me
My brothers in arms

Theres so many different worlds
So many differents suns
And we have just one world
But we live in different ones

Now the suns gone to hell
And the moons riding high
Let me bid you farewell
Every man has to die
But its written in the starlight
And every line on your palm
Were fools to make war
On our brothers in arms

Sounds of Lonliness
Patty Loveless

Hear the sounds of loneliness
Hear the sounds all around
Since you've gone and left me alone
I just hear these sounds from now on
And they grow louder..
And louder...
And louder...
And louder...

Hear the sounds of my tears
Fallen down, fallen down
Like the rain comin' down
Oh the sound, that lonely sound

Hear the sound of my heartbeat
It beats so loud
Oh I can't stand it
Oh that sound
That lonely sound
That lonely sound..
That lonely sound..
And it grows louder
And louder..
And louder..
And louder..

Hear the sound of my mind
Thoughts of you all the time
Since you've gone
Left me alone
I'll just hear these sounds
From now on

Hear the sounds of loneliness
Hear the sounds all around
Since you've gone
And left me alone
I'll just hear these sounds
From now on

Hear the sounds of loneliness
Hear the sounds all around
Since you've gone
And left me alone...
I'll just hear the sounds
From now on...

This is a John Lennon song, that I have heard a thousand times.......but today when I listened to it, I thought of Ennis and Jack.......

Starting Over

Our life together is so precious together
We have grown, we have grown
Although our love is still special
Let's take a chance and fly away somewhere alone

It's been too long since we took the time
No-one's to blame, I know time flies so quickly
But when I see you darling
It's like we both are falling in love again
It'll be just like starting over, starting over

Everyday we used to make it love
Why can't we be making love nice and easy
It's time to spread our wings and fly
Don't let another day go by my love
It'll be just like starting over, starting over

Why don't we take off alone
Take a trip somewhere far, far away
We'll be together all alone again
Like we used to in the early days
Well, well, well darling

It's been too long since we took the time
No-one's to blame, I know time flies so quickly
But when I see you darling
It's like we both are falling in love again
It'll be just like starting over, starting over

Our life together is so precious together
We have grown, we have grown
Although our love is still special
Let's take a chance and fly away somewhere
Being happy doesn't mean everything is perfect.

It means you've decided to see beyond the imperfection

This is another oldie by Linda Ronstadt....

DIFFERENT DRUM

You and I travel to the beat of a different drum
Oh can't you tell by the way I run
Every time you make eyes at me
Wo-oh

You cry and moan and say it will work out
But honey child I've got my doubts
You can't see the forest for the trees

Oh don't get me wrong
It's not that I knock it
It's just that I am not in the market
For a boy who wants to love only me

Yes, and I ain't saying you ain't pretty
All I'm saying is I'm not ready
For any person place or thing
To try and pull the reins in on me

So good-bye I'll be leaving
I see no sense in this crying and grieving
We'll both live a lot longer
If you live without me

Oh don't get me wrong
It's not that I knock it
It's just that I am not in the market
For a boy who wants to love only me

Yes, and I ain't saying you ain't pretty
All I'm saying is I'm not ready
For any person place or thing
To try and pull the reins in on me

So good-bye I'll be leaving
I see no sense in this crying and grieving
We'll both live a lot longer
If you live without me

Richard Hawley. This song reminds me of Jack and Ennis in the Motel. Richard Hawley's baritone puts me in mind of Ennis. If Ennis could sing.

Hi Malina!! I'm so glad to see you here! I've missed you. I think I'm finally done with IMDB. Sad.

Hotel Room

Ten thirty in this hotel room,
You and I locked in the gloom,
Lost out of love once again
But I've got you here with me friend

(Chorus)
Cos you're here in my arms
Here in my arms
Here in my arms
Here in my arms

Last time I looked it was nine
You know that all things then were fine,
Now I've gone and lost it again
But I've got you here with me friend.

(Chorus)

(Solo)

You know that it's like leading a mild life
The clothes in my younger days were so wild
And it's time I met someone like you
And I hope to make certain that it's true

Last time I looked it was late
That's when I started to break
It's a long long way till the end
But I've got you here with me friend

Cos you're here in my arms
Here in my arms
Here in my arms
Here in my arms
Here in my arms
Here in my arms
Here in my arms
Put you here in my arms
Here in my arms.

Run, by Snow Patrol (but the version I preferred is covered by Leona Lewis) is a song I think fitting for Jack and Ennis.....

I'll sing it one last time for you
Then we really have to go
You've been the only thing that's right
In all I've done

And I can barely look at you
But every single time I do
I know we'll make it anywhere
Away from here

Light up, light up
As if you have a choice
Even if you cannot hear my voice
I'll be right beside you dear

Louder louder
And we'll run for our lives
I can hardly speak I understand
Why you can't raise your voice to say

To think I might not see those eyes
Makes it so hard not to cry
And as we say our long goodbye
I nearly do

Light up...

Slower slower
We don't have time for that
All I want is to find an easier way
To get out of our little heads

Have heart my dear
We're bound to be afraid
Even if it's just for a few days
Making up for all this mess

Here is the link in case you want to listen....

I have just read and listen to the lyric once more, and it really is appropriate....what does everyone else think?

Guys, not sure if this one has been posted before, but I recently downloaded a few tracks from Boyce Aveune and one of them was a song called Say, which I had never heard before and is a cover of John Mayer track. The whole song, both the verse and corus reminded me of Jack & Ennis, namely, what Ennis had felt at the end, wishing he had taken a chance and said what he really wanted.......Jack.

Take all of your wasted honor
Every little past frustration
Take all of your so-called problems
Better put them in quotations

Say what you need to say
Say what you need to say
Say what you need to say
Say what you need to say
Say what you need to say
Say what you need to say
Say what you need to say
Say what you need to say

Walking like a one man army
Fighting with the shadows in your head
Living out the same old moment
Knowing you'd be better off instead
If you could only

Say what you need to say
Say what you need to say
Say what you need to say
Say what you need to say
Say what you need to say
Say what you need to say
Say what you need to say
Say what you need to say

Have no fear for giving in
Have no fear for giving over
You better know that in the end
It's better to say too much
Than never to say what you need to say again

Even if your hands are shaking
And your faith is broken
Even as the eyes are closing
Do it with a heart wide open

Say what you need to say
Say what you need to say
Say what you need to say
Say what you need to say

Say what you need to say
Say what you need to say
Say what you need to say
Say what you need to
Say what you need to

Say what you need to say
Say what you need to say
Say what you need to say
Say what you need to say

Say what you need to say
Say what you need to say
Say what you need to say
Say what you need to say........
The hammer may strike, be dead on the ground
A nail to my hand,
A cross on his crown

I heard this song again last night and I immediately thought of Ennis.
Out on the plains with the cattle thinking about Jack.
As I often do when I think about our boys I cried a bit.
I made some changes to James aylors Beautiful song for the purposes of our forum.

Rockabye Sweet Baby James (Jack)

There is a young cowboy he lives on the range
His horse and his cattle are his only companions
He works in the saddle and he sleeps in the canyons
Waiting for summer, his pastures to change

And as the moon rises he sits by his fire
Thinking about Jack and glasses of beer
And closing his eyes as the doggies retire
He sings out a song which is soft but its clear
As if maybe someone could hear

(chorus)
Goodnight you moonlight ladies
Rockabye sweet baby jack
Deep greens and blues are the colors I choose
Wont you let me go down in my dreams
And rockabye sweet baby jack

Theres a song that they sing when they take to the highway
A song that they sing when they take to the sea
A song that they sing of their home in the sky
Maybe you can believe it if it helps you to sleep
But singing works just fine for me

"The biggest obstacle to most of us achieving our dreams isn't reality, it's our own fear"

"Saint Paul had his Epiphany on the road to Damascus, Mine was on Brokeback Mountain"

I know a song that makes me think of Ennis and Jack, and a few other ill-fated couples. This song is called "Signal Fire" by Snow Patrol. It's from the "Spider-Man 3" soundtrack and it's a very beautiful yet sad song.
When the final part said "No, I don't wanna wait forever" really got to me. That seem like such a sad definition for Ennis and Jack's ultimate wish on being happy together when it never happens. :(

"Signal Fire"-Snow Patrol

The perfect words never crossed my mind
'Cause there was nothing there but you
I felt every ounce of me, screaming out
But the sound was trapped deep in me

All I wanted, just sped right past me
But I was rooted fast to the earth
I could be stuck here for a thousand years
Without your arms to drag me out

There you are, standing right in front of me
There you are, standing right in front of me
All this fear falls away, you leave me naked
Hold me close, cause I need you to guide me to safety

No, I don't wanna wait forever
No, I don't wanna wait forever

In the confusion, and the aftermath
You are my signal fire
The only resolution, and the only joy
Is the faint spark of forgiveness in your eyes

There you are, standing right in front of me
There you are, standing right in front of me
All this fear falls away, you leave me naked
Hold me close, cause I need you to guide me to safety

There you are, standing right in front of me
There you are, standing right in front of me
All this fear falls away, you leave me naked
Hold me close, cause I need you to guide me to safety

No, I don't wanna wait forever
No, I don't wanna wait forever
No, I don't wanna wait forever

Bienvenue, that's welcome Gabreya !

Somehow, I also think that Ennis feared being killed, like murdered in a similar situation as he had seen being brought by his father. And I feel that way more so, now, having heard about that young man who was murdered in that bus yesterday ! If I may add, and so a song for Ennis would be sad ! And I hope for hopeful songs too for him as well as for Jack !

What do you think ?

Yeah. That sounds good, Artiste.
I know Ennis was afraid of meeting the same horrible fate that he'd seen as a boy. But, all that fear within him made him miss out on love. I think the kind of songs that defines Ennis and Jack are the ones that are the hopeful but has a heartaching feeling about them. The song's lines like,"You are my signal fire" "No I don't wanna wait forever" has such a deep, moving pain to it. Ennis and Jack both wanted to be loved and be happy with eachother but couldn't. So, it's like in that line, they didn't want to wait forever on being together for good and not being afraid to love which seems unfortunated for them. :(

Oh! I see.  ;D

Yeah, I like cowboy songs. I used to listen to a few of them when I was little, trying to pretend to be a cowgirl. I've always loved cowboys, you know.

I just obtained "Narrow Stairs" by Death Cab for Cutie and already I have two songs memorized. This one I can imagine Jack singing to Ennis:

How I wish you could see the potential, the potential of you and me
It's like a book elegantly bound, but in a language that you can't read - just yet
You gotta spend some time--love, you gotta spend some time with me
And I know that you'll find--love, I will possess your heart

There are days when outside your window, I see my reflection as I slowly pass
And I long for this mirrored perspective, when we'll be lovers, lovers at last
You gotta spend some time--love, you gotta spend some time with me
And I know that you'll find--love, I will possess your heart

You reject my advances and desperate pleas
I won't let you, let me down so easily, so easily

You gotta spend some time--love, you gotta spend some time with me
And I know that you'll find--love, I will possess your heart

Here is the other song on "Narrow Stairs" that reminds me of BBM. It never fails to make me cry, even when I listen to it in the middle of the day (a sick desire for self-abuse, I'm sure!) I imagine Alma Jr. singing this to her father, or maybe Annie Proulx herself singing it to her Ennis.

Your New Twin Sized Bed

You look so defeated lying there in your new twin size bed.
With a single pillow underneath your single head.
I guess you decided that that old queen has more space than you would need.
Now it's in the alley behind your apartment with a sign that says it's free.

And I hope you have more luck with this than me.

You used to think that someone would come along.
And lay beside you in the space they belong.
But the other side of the mattress and box springs stayed like new.
What's the point of holding onto what never gets used?

Other than a sick desire for self abuse.

And I try not to worry, but you've got me terrified.
It's like you're in some kind of hurry to say goodbye

Heya,
I was just in Starbucks and became inspired to dig out this old thread and post, perhaps a somewhat unexpected source/ song.

They were playing Cole Porter's song "Every Time We Say Good-bye" and it struck me how appropriate the lyrics are to Jack and Ennis.  I suppose it's unlikely that Jack and Ennis would have listened to old standards like this, but Cole Porter was gay so it's sort of interesting to think about it that way too.

"Every time we say goodbye
I die a little
Every time we say goodbye
I wonder why a little
Why the gods above me
Who must be in the know
Think so little to me
They allow you to go

When you're near
there's such an air
of Spring about it
I can hear a lark somewhere
begin to sing about it
Theres no love song finer
But how strange the change
From major to minor
Every time we say goodbye"

the world was asleep to our latent fuss - bowie

What a lovely song!! Isn't it wonderful when a Brokie moment hits you, friend? Sometimes I'm listening to a lovely old song and I suddenly realize that it is entirely applicable to Jack and Ennis. Then the universality of love comes home to me, and I'm suddenly eyeing the barrista in a different way!  8)

Persuasion

Music by Tim Finn, lyrics by Richard Thompson

I'm surprised it hasn't been brought up before since I see Teddy Thompson mentioned other places in the forum.  I always see it as song coming from Jacks view:

You and I, tempted by the promise of a different life
Time has fled, there's a constant battle running through my head
I don't know what to do...'cos I still believe
After all the foolish things you put me through
I could always make a start on something new
And I've alway been a man who's open to
Persuasion

Blind romance, there'll be no half measures given half a chance
But we never learn, trusting in the fire while the cruel flame burns
And we need to rebuild what was never there
What got left behind
After all the foolish things that we've been through
I could always make a start on something new
And I'll always be a man who's open to
Persuasion

And it's written in my heart so that everybody can see it
And it's written in my soul, after all I still believe it
I still believe it
I still believe it
I still believe it
I still believe it

And here's the excellent version by Richard Thompson and his son Teddy.

Here is Rodeo Clown, by Jack Johnson

"Rodeo Clowns"

Sweepin the floors, open up the doors
Yeah turn on the lights, getting ready for the night
Nobody's romancing, 'cause its too early for dancing
But here comes the music ...
Bright lights flashing
They cover up your lack of so many people
So many problems
So many reason to buy another round
Drink it down
Just another night on the town
With the big man, money man, better then the other man
He got the plan, with the million dollar give a damn
What nobody understands
Become a smaller man, the bright lights keep flashin,
Women keep on dancing with the clowns,
Yeah, yeah, yeah,
They pick me up when I'm down,
Yeah, yeah,
The rodeo clowns
Yeah, yeah, yeah, they pick me up when I'm down
The disco ball's spinnin', all the music and the women
And the shots of tequila,
Man they say that they need ya
What they really need, is just a little room to breath
Teeny bopping disco queen
She barely understands her dreams of belly button rings
And other kinds of things
Symbolic of change, but the thing that is strange
Is that the changes occur
And now she's just a part of the herd, yeah, yeah, yeah
Man i thought that you heard
Yeah, yeah
The changes occurred
Yeah, yeah, yeah, just a part of the herd
Lights out, shut down, late night, wet ground
You walk by look at him, but he can't look at you
Yeah, you might feel pity, but he only feels the ground
You understand moves, but he only knows let down
By the corner, there's another one
Reaching out a hand, coming from a broken man
Well he tried to live, but he's done trying
Not dead, but definitely dying
With the rest of the clowns
Yeah, yeah
mmm mmm mmmm mmmm
With the rest of the clowns
Sweepin the floors, open up the doors,
Yeah turn on the lights, getting ready for the night
Nobody's romancing, 'cause its too early for dancing
But here comes the music

Breakbackdown, by Jack Johnson

"Breakdown"

I hope this old train breaks down
Then I could take a walk around
And, see what there is to see
And time is just a melody
All the people in the street
Walk as fast as their feet can take them
I just roll through town
And though my windows got a view
The frame I'm looking through
Seems to have no concern for now
So for now

I need this
Old train to breakdown
Oh please just
Let me please breakdown

This engine screams out loud
Centipede gonna crawl westbound
So I don't even make a sound
Cause it's gonna sting me when I leave this town
All the people in the street
That I'll never get to meet
If these tracks don't bend somehow
And I got no time
That I got to get to
Where I don't need to be
So I

I need this
Old train to breakdown
Oh please just
Let me please breakdown
I need this
Old train to breakdown
Oh please just
Let me please breakdown
I wanna break on down
But I cant stop now
Let me break on down

But you cant stop nothing
If you got no control
Of the thoughts in your mind
That you kept in, you know
You don't know nothing
But you don't need to know
The wisdoms in the trees
Not the glass windows
You cant stop wishing
If you don't let go
But things that you find
And you lose, and you know
You keep on rolling
Put the moment on hold
The frames too bright
So put the blinds down low

I need this
Old train to breakdown
Oh please just
Let me please breakdown
I need this
Old train to breakdown
Oh please just
Let me please breakdown
I wanna break on down
But I cant stop now

One more Jack Johnson song?

This one's called "Go On". Coincidentally, I just wrote a song called "Go On" meeself recently.

"Go On"

In my rearview
I watch you watching the twilight
Behind the telephone lines
Nothing to prove, or to assume
Just thinking that your thoughts are different than mine
In my rearview
I watch you
I give you your life, would you give me mine?

I see you slowly swim away
Cause the light is leaving town
To a place that I can't be
There's no apologies

Just go on
Just go on
There're still so many things
I wanna to say to you
But go on
Just go on
We're bound by blood that's moving
The moment that we start
The moment that we start

I see perfect little eyes
Watch the shadows of the clouds
And the surface of the ocean out the window of a plane
I get nervous when I fly
I'm used to walking with my feet
Turbulence is like a sigh that I can't help but over think

What is the purpose of my life
If it doesn't ever do
With learning to let it go
Live vicariously through you
You can do the same
It's the least you can do
Cause it's a lonely little chain
If you don't add to it

So go on
Just go on
There's still so many things
I wanna say to you
Go on
Just go on
We're bound by blood and love
The moment that we start
Just go on
Just go on
There're still so many things
I wanna say to you
Just go on
Just go on
We're bound by blood that's moving
The moment that we start
The moment that we start

On the long road home from Rodney's memorial service Chuck and I enjoyed listening to John Denver and also Savage Garden. Here's one of their songs, Hold Me:

If we can't find a way out of these problems
Then maybe we don't need this
Standing face to face
Enemies at war we build defences
And secret hiding places

I might need you to hold me tonight
I might need you to say it's alright
I might need you to make the first stand
Because tonight I'm finding it hard to be your man

Hey
More than angry words I hate this silence
It's getting so loud
Well I want to scream
But bitterness has silenced these emotions
It's getting hard to breathe
So tell me isn't happiness
Worth more than a gold diamond ring?
I'm willing to do anything
To calm the storm in my heart
I've never been the praying kind
But lately I've been down upon my knees
Not looking for a miracle
Just a reason to believe
[ From: http://www.elyrics.net/read/s/savage-garden-lyrics/hold-me-lyrics.html ]

I might need you to hold me tonight
I might need you to say it's alright
I might need you to make the first stand
Because tonight I'm finding it hard to be your man

Do you remember not long ago?
When we used to live for the nighttime
Cherish each moment
Now we don't live we exist
We just run through our lives
So alone
That's why you've got to hold me

Hey
If we can't find a way out of these problems
Then maybe we don't need this
Standing face to face
Enemies at war we build defences
And secret hiding places

I might need you to hold me tonight
I might need you to say it's alright
I might need you to make the first stand
Because tonight I'm finding it hard to be your man

Doesn't it make you think of Jack during the lake scene?

Jack Johnson's Better Together:

There's no combination of words
I could put on the back of a postcard,
No song that I could sing
But I can try for your heart,
Our dreams, and they are made out of real things,
Like a shoebox of photographs,
With sepiatone loving,
Love is the answer
At least for most of the questions in my heart ,
Like why are we here? And where do we go?
And how come it's so hard?
It's not always easy,
And sometimes life can be deceiving,
I'll tell you one thing, its always better when we're together

[Chorus:]
MMM, it's always better when we're together
Yeah, we'll look at the stars when we're together
Well, it's always better when we're together
Yeah, it's always better when we're together

[Verse 2:]
And all of these moments
Just might find their way into my dreams tonight
But I know that they'll be gone,
When the morning light sings
And brings new things,
But tomorrow night you see
That they'll be gone too,
Too many things I have to do,
But if all of these dreams might find their way
Into my day to day scene
I'll be under the impression,
I was somewhere in-between
With only two,
Just me and you
Not so many things we got to do,
Or places we got to be
We'll sit beneath the mango tree now

Yeah, it's always better when we're together
MMM, We're somewhere in-between together
Well, it's always better when we're together
Yeah, it's always better when we're together

MmMMmm MmMMm MmMMm
I believe in memories
They look so, so pretty when I sleep
Hey now, and when, and when I wake up,
You look so pretty sleeping next to me
But there is not enough time,
And there is no, no song I could sing
And there is no combination of words I could say
But I will still tell you one thing,
We're better together

"Soul Meets Body"

I want to live where soul meets body
And let the sun wrap its arms around me
And bathe my skin in water cool and cleansing
And feel, feel what its like to be new

Cause in my head there’s a greyhound station
Where I send my thoughts to far off destinations
So they may have a chance of finding a place
where they’re far more suited than here

And I cannot guess what we'll discover
When we turn the dirt with our palms cupped like shovels
But I know our filthy hands can wash one another’s
And not one speck will remain

And I do believe it’s true
That there are roads left in both of our shoes
But if the silence takes you
Then I hope it takes me too
So brown eyes I hold you near
Cause you’re the only song I want to hear
A melody softly soaring through my atmosphere

Where soul meets body
Where soul meets body
Where soul meets body

And I do believe it’s true
That there are roads left in both of our shoes
But if the silence takes you
Then I hope it takes me too
So brown eyes I hold you near
Cause you’re the only song I want to hear
A melody softly soaring through my atmosphere
A melody softly soaring through my atmosphere
A melody softly soaring through my atmosphere
A melody softly soaring through my atmosphere

Zombie thread alert.  ;D

Finally! A thread for non-Brokeback music that reminds us of our boys.....as someone who relates music to just about everything else in my life, I find myself thinking about how this song or that would fit into some aspect of their separate and difficult lives. (And *HOW* I wish the Allman Brothers' 'Melissa' had made it onto the BBM soundtrack. That song was written for Ennis Del Mar.)

Anyway, this is not a terribly existential song, but can't you just imagine Jack having it playing at the Siesta Motel as Ennis walks in the door after they've gone in separately to keep people from suspecting? (Me either, but I have to imagine things that make me smile every now and then...not to mention it was recorded a few years after they jounced the bed there....details, details.)

On a slightly sadder note, I always think Jack personifies air/wind. Though I can't see either of them being into Jimi, this is my favorite song of his and think it represents well the melancholia each carried with him for every moment they were apart.  :'(

All along it was a fever
A cold sweat hot-headed believer
I threw my hands in the air, said, "Show me something,"
He said, "If you dare, come a little closer."

Round and around and around and around we go
Oh now, tell me now, tell me now, tell me now you know.

Not really sure how to feel about it.
Something in the way you move
Makes me feel like I can't live without you.
It takes me all the way.
I want you to stay

It's not much of a life you're living
It's not just something you take–it's given

Round and around and around and around we go
Oh now, tell me now, tell me now, tell me now you know.

Not really sure how to feel about it.
Something in the way you move
Makes me feel like I can't live without you.
It takes me all the way.
I want you to stay.

Ooh, ooh, ooh, the reason I hold on
Ooh, ooh, ooh, 'cause I need this hole gone
Funny you're the broken one but I'm the only one who needed saving
'Cause when you never see the light it's hard to know which one of us is caving.

Not really sure how to feel about it.
Something in the way you move
Makes me feel like I can't live without you.
It takes me all the way.
I want you to stay, stay.
I want you to stay, oh.

Oceansize- Long forgotten

I think it was a soundtrack to one of the fanfics I've read some time ago. It's quite beautifully fitting and so very sad. I can just picture Ennis's grief, longing and a lifetime of regret when I listen to it... and it's not just the lyrics, the melody chills me to the bone.
...

These are the secrets you will share
These are the words you can not bare
This is the sight you’ll never see
And that you have forgotten me
The voice that tempted you away
The deepest hole in which I stay
I miss you most my darkest hour
I’m wondering where the hell you are

Too late to tell you you were wrong
Another word to dwell upon
You could have waited for me
Like I was waiting just for you

The fuse is flicker in his eye
Her touch to blow me open wide
I could have run a million times
But I was waiting for you

And did you ever stop to think
About how low that you could sink
And down the low, our deepest sigh
Within yourself you can not hide

Do photographs and faces lie?
Why did I never wonder why?
Why I was waiting for you?
Why I was waiting for you?
Waiting for you..

I know the lyrics to Fields of Gold have already been posted here by a different artist, but I heard this song (Sting singing, not Eva Cassidy) at the grocery store today and almost cried thinking of our boys.

Also, I came across this Brokeback Medley sung by the Gay Men's Chorus of LA. It's SO SO SO beautiful I had to share.
"He Was a Friend of Mine", "A Love That Will Never Grow Old", and "Wings"

Sting sings of fields of barley in that song, and in the movie, the final shot is of a field of barley.

In the story I've finished in my mind they are together forever walking in those fields of gold.  :'(

First time I've seen this thread, great songs, and the lyrics fit so well.

This is so perfect I think it could well have been on the soundtrack.

Norah Jones

Come away with me in the night

Come away with me on a bus
Come away where they can't tempt us
 With their lies

I want to walk with you
 On a cloudy day
In fields where the yellow grass grows knee-high
So won't you try to come

Come away with me and we'll kiss
 On a mountaintop
 Come away with me
And I'll never stop loving you

And I want to wake up with the rain
 Falling on a tin roof
While I'm safe there in your arms
So all I ask is for you
To come away with me in the night
 Come away with me

I'm a fan of U2's older stuff.

You say you want
Diamonds on a ring of gold
You say you want
Your story to remain untold

But all the promises we make
From the cradle to the grave
When all I want is you

You say you'll give me
A highway with no one on it
Treasure just to look upon it
All the riches in the night

You say you'll give me
Eyes in a moon of blindness
A river in a time of dryness
A harbor in the tempest

But all the promises we make
From the cradle to the grave
When all I want is you

You say you want
Your love to work out right
To last with me through the night
You say you want
Diamonds on a ring of gold
Your story to remain untold
Your love not to grow cold

All the promises we break
From the cradle to the grave
When all I want is you
You... all I want is...
You... all I want is...
"You got a better idea?"   "I did once."

Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd
So, so you think you can tell Heaven from Hell, blue skies from pain.
Can you tell a green field from a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?

Did they get you to trade your heroes for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change?
Did you exchange a walk on part in the war for a lead role in a cage?

How I wish, how I wish you were here.
We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl, year after year,
Running over the same old ground.
What have we found?
The same old fears.
Wish you were here.
"You got a better idea?"   "I did once."
