Jane, it didn't feel like cheating at the time, but I had part of the puzzle figured out, and used search to look in the short story which was open on my screen.  I found the quote right fast that way.  

But I hope people don't do it that way.   Or rather, I hope people don't count doing it that way as actually figuring out the puzzle themselves when playing against the rest of us.  

So if I do it, I won't post the answer as figuring it out first, and hope others don't either.
