Deportation Day today
« on: April 30, 2006, 06:51:41 am »
I just heard this in the news and wanted to share it with you.
Today, last Sunday in April, is the day of the commemoration of all those who were deported to Nazi concentration camps during WW2 (at least in France - other Europeans tell me if you have this). ALL those who were deported? Well, almost...

For the first time this year, representatives of the homosexual community were present at the ceremony. I say present only, because they were not invited. But at least this year their 'presence' was tolerated. The last time they tried to attend 3 years ago, they were taken away by the police and spent the ceremony shackled at the police station. So as one of them said today: "We are making slow progress", but they were not handed the microphone to make any speech/declaration, and could leave the flowers only after everyone else had gone.

That made my blood curl, and my quick temper flare.

It's still amazing to consider ourselves part of enlightened era and be jolted back into reality by stories such as this.

Yep, that's liberal Europe/France for ya!
But then again, I am living in a country where over a third of the population claim that the National Front is close to their daily preoccupations.

For those who haven't heard of that party and its infamous leader, Jean-Marie Le Pen (a Breton like me, I am ashamed to add), it is an extreme right wing party that thrives on the hatred of foreigners, is nostalgic of the Vichy era - that's the time of French collaboration with nazi Germany - and holds the view that the killing of 6 million Jews was "a detail of History", and that gas chambers never existed anyway.
I let you guess what they think of gays.

Err... That still leaves 2/3 of us or almost, who are NOT like that (i.e, lobotomized), so everyone, you're still welcome to come and visit!

I wonder now if I should always speak the truth...

Sometimes I wonder if we are not heading back into the Dark Ages again.
