Hiya

!

Summer is just around the corner and with it vacation time for many BetterMostians. Since we are a pretty close knit community, I thought it'd be a good idea to have thread where those who want can announce their absence and let their friends and fellow Brokeis know that they have not suddenly fallen from the face of the earth

.

And because we are also a talkative bunch, I'd suggest to put announcements of absence in bold and red letters, so it won't get lost in all the good wishes, good-byes and other posts.

I'll be on vacations too, but it is still a little while to go till then.

Hello. I just got back--Thursday--from my vacation to Florida. And I probably won't go anywhere else this summer--not for a week anyway. (Homebody here) I might go on a couple of short jaunts. Florida was fun--the water was clear as glass on Panama City Beach. The kids who went parasailed--I just rode the boat this time. We shopped, ate, snorkeled, and relaxed. But it's good to be home. Have a fun summer, Brokies!

I'm leaving tomorrow for a week. I'll probably check in at least a few times early in the week, but in the latter half I doubt I'll have any computer access and will have to go --

-- several days without being here.

Inspired by Jeff Wrangler's amazing advance packing planning, I uncharacteristically have started setting aside some clothes to take, even though I'm not actually leaving for at least 12 hours ! Usually I'm still deciding between different T-shirts as the airport taxi pulls up in front of the house.

I'll wait until tomorrow to do the laundry, though. No sense getting all carried away with habit change.

Oh, and sadly, I'll miss the Blue Moon chat! Have a great time, everyone! $:-\$

6-9 July for T in the Park music festival

16-22 July in Holland

13-28 September in Crete.

They have a frequent rider program, and I earned enough points (30k) for the trip from Atlanta to San Jose in a DELUXE BEDROOM! I'LL BE GOIN' IN STYLE AND COMFORT BABY! My friend Steve from Portland, Or is going with me!

I was away last weekend...headed up into the mountains for a little hiking/camping/hot springs soaking. Spent the full moon (TS1) in a tent!! Now I'm back with a lot of pictures, posting them on Anything Goes under Summer Has Come to the Rocky Mountains. I should be around until the 20th when I'm headed out to Alberta!!

I'm about to embark on my summer travels myself.

I'll be making my pilgrimage to the hallowed ground of Provincetown, Mass., from July 18 through July 23, inclusive.

Then, on Friday, August 3, I'll be leaving for my annual week at the Pennsic Medieval War recreation/reenactment event, returning home Sunday, August 12.

God, it's good to get out of the city in the summer!

Bags are packed and I'm ready to roll. Train for Boston leaves at 6:52 a.m. Wednesday, the boat to Provincetown leaves Boston at 2 p.m.

Once I shut the computer down tonight, I'm off line till I return home Monday evening--though I might not be back on the Bettermost spread till Tuesday.

Seems like everyone is off to somewhere this week. We are leaving tomorrow to go to LA. Jeff to Provincetown and all the Alberta folks to go to Canada. Yeehaw. Well, I made it back home all right. Back to the grindstone in the morning. $:-\$

Amtrak will be hearing from me.

The train that was supposed to get me into Boston an hour and a half before the boat sailed for Provincetown last Wednesday was two hours late because of bum equipment--bad traction motor on the locomotive (I heard two crew members talking about it).

So Amtrak screwed me and I missed the boat. Headed over to the bus station to see about getting a bus to P'town. Screwed again. That late train also made me miss the bus that connected at Hyannis for P'town. Would have had to sit in Hyannis till 8:30 that evening to get a bus (it was only 3:00 in the afternoon).

So I had to head out to the airport and fly over to P'town via Cape Air.

So I got to P'town only two hours later than expected--thanks, Cape Air--but Amtrak is going to hear from me.

It's nice to have you back online Bud. But, jeez, sorry to hear about your travel woes. I've had a number of bad experiences on Amtrak myself in the past. So, I feel your pain.

I love Provincetown! I've only been there once, but it was great. I hope you had a nice time despite Amtrak.

I love Provincetown! I've only been there once, but it was great. I hope you had a nice time despite Amtrak.

Oh, I did, thanks. I was at a new-to-me guest house, a wonderful, rustic place, conveniently located. I had a private bath--at a decent price for P'town. I slept well and had an appetite like a horse!

I got to go sailing on a two-masted schooner. It was a good vacation!

I've already received a couple of pm's from members wondering what happened to Susie (Susiebell). There's no need to worry. Susie is just fine and she HAS NOT decided to leave BetterMost. She's on vacation with her family in the south of England for two weeks. She left on July 28, and I think she will be back with us again around August 10.

She told me she will probably be suffering from BetterMost withdrawls while she's there, but she hopes the fish and chips, and lots of cream tea will help soothe those symptoms until she returns home.

So don't nobody worry about Susie okay? I just hope the weather is cooperating with her down there!

I'm about to be away again for a while myself.

This Friday, Aug. 3, I leave for my annual week in the pretend Middle Ages at the Pennsic War medieval reenactment/re-creation event in western Pennsylvania. Though I think there is a cyber cafe set up on site (go figure--medieval reenactors can't function without cell phones and the Internet

), I will be out of cyber contact until some time after I return home on Sunday, Aug. 12.

Hey, thanks everyone. It's good to be home.

On the other hand, I'm away for a week, all hell breaks loose at work, I'm surrounded at home by the detritus of the trip, and I'm spinning like a dervish trying to figure out where to start/what to do next.

I don't do any of the fighting. I don't know how anyone survives 90+F temperatures and Pennsylvania humidity in armor. When it wasn't hot and sunny it was hot and rainy. I mostly stayed in camp, relaxed, and read. Saw some good theatrical productions while I was there.

The squires interest me more than the knights. ...

Spectators stay on the edge of the battlefield so they don't get hurt. They can take photos, but since I didn't go to watch any of the fighting. It's amazing how loud it is when a couple of hundred guys with rattan swords beat on wooden or steel shields all at once. You can hear it back in camp.

Best way to learn about it is at the society web site: http://www.sca.org. It hasn't got anything to do with "Dungeons and Dragons."

Now, I gotta focus, focus, focus. ...

Sometimes it pays to complain (see below).

I just spoke by telephone with Amtrak's Customer Relations department.

Because of what happened when I took the train from Philadelphia to Boston on my way to Provincetown, Amtrak is sending me a travel voucher equal to the cost of the ticket from Philadelphia to Boston.

So Amtrak screwed me and I missed the boat. Headed over to the bus station to see about getting a bus to P'town. Screwed again. That late train also made me miss the bus that connected at Hyannis for P'town. Would have had to sit in Hyannis till 8:30 that evening to get a bus (it was only 3:00 in the afternoon).

So I had to head out to the airport and fly over to P'town via Cape Air.

So I got to P'town only two hours later than expected--thanks, Cape Air--but Amtrak is going to hear from me.
